Cats and Dogs
Déjà Vu
Morning
rays seeped through every corner at the Higurashi shrine. Mama and Grandpa were
already up and about; Souta had spent the night at a friends
and wouldn’t be returning till later on. Grandpa went up to Kagome's room,
sliding through to door and trying not to disturb her. He checked her bloody
bandages and found that wounds had already healed most of the way. He began
removing her bandages and cleaning off the dried blood
when Kagome woke.
“Gr…grandpa?” she muttered, her eyes bleary with sleep.
“Shh…my child. You are home and
safe. Rest now and Mama will wake you when breakfast is ready,” Grandpa
disposed of some of the soiled bandages and continued cleaning the blood.
Kagome nodded and drifted off to sleep again without complaint. Grandpa had
finished cleaning her when he heard someone be him him.
“Is she okay?” Sango asked coming through the door quietly.
Grandpa nodded, “Her demon blood has definitely come forward.
She has healed most of the way but is still exhausted from yesterday’s events.
She should be ready to go soon,” Grandpa stroked his granddaughter’s forehead,
“where are Mama and Riquo?”
“Mama went to go wake up Riquo, she slept in the God Tree last
night.”
Grandpa nodded, “I can see why. Usually if Inuyasha spent
the night here, he’d always wind up sleeping in that tree. Riquo must smell his
scent all over it.”
Outside, Mama stood beneath the God Tree, looking out at the
newly awakened Tokyo.
“Good Morning Mama,” Riquo said from her perch.
Mama smiled, knowing Riquo had awakened the moment she had
stepped out the door, “Good morning Riquo. Would you like some breakfast?”
“No thank you, Mama. I’m going to go and get Kagome's
supplies from school and get that over with. Does she have anything that she
needs to turn in?” Riquo leapt off the branch and landed neatly next to Mama.
Mama nodded, “As a matter of fact, she has a lot of homework
on her desk that has to be turned in if you don’t mind. Come on inside with me,
I think Kagome's awake and I know she would want to see you first before you
leave.”
Riquo followed Mama inside up to Kagome's room where Grandpa
and Sango were still talking with Kagome.
“How’re your wounds, Sango?” Riquo asked.
“Yea, Kilala missed you though,” she giggled as the little
fire cat bounced onto Riquo’s shoulder.
Are you still hurt?
Riquo meowed.
No, much better. I
miss Miroku. Kilala meowed sadly.
”What’s wrong with her?” Sango asked.
Riquo laughed, “She misses Miroku, not me.”
Oh I missed you too!
Thanks. Riquo
replied.
Sango blushed and took Kilala from Riquo, “Well, she is fond
of him.”
So is she, Kilala
meowed. They heard someone laughing and turned to realize it was Kagome. Riquo
sat next to her on her bed.

“Hey kiddo, how are ya?”
Kagome shrugged, “I’ve definitely seen better days. You?”
“I’m fine. I’m about to drop off some of your homework at
your school and get your assignments. Think you’ll be ready when I get back?”
Kagome nodded, “Are you going to conceal yourself?”
Riquo stood and closed her eyes. Soon after, they could see
Riquo’s demon features changing. Her ears weren’t pointy anymore; her fangs had
shrunk, looking like normal teeth. Her tearstains and spots vanished as well as
her tail and her claws on her hands and feet were gone too. The only thing that
remained was the cat slit in her eyes.
“Wow, you have got to teach me that,” Kagome said gaping.
Riquo laughed, “I didn’t know you were so eager to be human
again.”
Kagome shrugged, “Can’t always have someone running my
errands in this time.”
Riquo laughed with everyone. It felt good to be safe and
sound again. She just couldn’t wait to get home.
“Kagome, do you have any clothes I can borrow? I don’t think
my wrappings would be very appropriate out in public anyway.”
Mama placed a hand on Kagome's shoulder, “I’ll get them. You
rest for now.”
Riquo followed Mama to Kagome's closet while Sango, Kilala
and Grandpa went downstairs for breakfast. Scrounging through her clothes,
Riquo picked out some black boy’s sport shorts that went past her knees, a red
tank top and some flip flops. She heard Kagome laughing behind her.
“Sure, your wrappings would be inappropriate but you still
wana stick out, eh?”
Riquo turned around and stuck her tongue out at her, “You
got it. Besides I don’t want to dress up for a school that I despised anyway,”
she looked down at the outfit she had chosen, “do you think anybody will
recognize me?”
“Well, Kagome's friends might know you, but I doubt anybody
else will, unless a teacher was extra fond of you,” Mama said standing in the
doorway, “I’ll be downstairs Kagome, come down when you’re ready.”
Kagome nodded as she turned to leave. Once gone Riquo spun
herself around in a blurry twister and quickly got dressed. Kagome laughed and
slowly tried to get her achy body out of bed and towards the bathroom. She
didn’t even see Riquo finish getting dressed because she was at her side in a
second, helping her towards the bathroom.
“Hey Kagome, it might be a good idea if you told your mom
and grandpa more about you and Kouga and me and Inuyasha. So that next time we
come back with them, they won’t be too surprised.”
Kagome nodded, “Gotcha. O yea, my assignments are on my desk
and my backpack is there too. Believe me you might wana take that. They always
give me a lot. Are you going to use your speed?”
Riquo snorted, “Of course.”
“Good, we’ll leave when you get back.”
Kagome shut the bathroom door and Riquo gathered all of the
things she needed. She hoisted up Kagome's backpack and sped out of her house
towards her school.
Riquo stood in front of Kagome's high school and sighed. It’s been a while. Shit, I don’t even know
her classes. Riquo walked through the massive doors that led to the rest of
the high school and walked towards the front desk. An old woman with pointy
pink glasses and…Riquo sniffed and scowled, a black wig sat at the front desk
sipping at her coffee. Riquo smirked, Ms.
Mukisho…this oughta be interesting.
She looked up at Riquo, looked her up and down and formed a
line with her lips, “If you’re a new student, schedules are in that door to the
left.”
Riquo cleared her throat, “Actually I’m here to pick up
assignments for a friend and I don’t know what classes she has. Can you pull up
her schedule?”
Mukisho narrowed her eyes at Riquo, “For security reasons I
am not allowed to do that unless you have a note from the parent. The door is
behind you, have a good day,” she lowered her eyes to her book and didn’t see
Riquo’s eyes flash red.
Riquo stormed up to the counter and picked up the phone
receiver and handed it to her, “Her name is Kagome Higurashi, you can call her
mother and ask her yourself, but I cannot leave until I turn in her assignments
and get any work she needs.”
“Young lady who do you think you are!” Mukisho was flustered
and Riquo smirked.
“My name is Riquo, I use to attend this school,” Riquo
reached down and dialed Kagome's home number, “and I do not have time for
this.” She handed Mukisho the phone and stood back.
Mukisho glared at her but reluctantly held the phone to her
ear. Riquo heard Mama pick up the phone and Mukisho started to explain the
‘situation.’ Riquo bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing at Mama’s
annoyed voice on the other line and Mukisho’s embarrassed expression. She hung
up with Mama and glared at her again, and Riquo smiled sweetly at her. She
pulled up Kagome's schedule, printed it out and handed it to her.
“Here’s a visitor’s pass. Don’t be long, teachers don’t like
to have their classes interrupted.”
Riquo sneered, “I know the rules, Mukisho, I did go here
before.” Mukisho watched Riquo’s retreating form as she walked down the hallway
towards Kagome's first class.
Riquo had no trouble getting all of Kagome's assignments,
although the teachers did stare at her ‘unusual’ outfit as one of the students
put it. If anyone asked, she told them she was a graduate and just here for her
friend. None of Kagome's friends recognized her, which was a good thing, since
Riquo heard their little group gossiping about everybody else’s business.
Riquo walked towards the front desk again, having all of
Kagome's new assignments in her backpack and her completed assignments in the
hands of the teachers. Mushiko wasn’t paying attention to her so Riquo just
slapped the visitor’s pass onto the desk, smiled at Mushiko’s distressed face
and waltzed out of the school, leaving it behind once again as she sped away
towards the shrine.
“I’M HOME HONEY!” Riquo shouted as she walked into the
kitchen where everyone was talking. They all laughed at her extravagant
entrance and Grandpa stood, relieving Riquo of Kagome's backpack.
“I’ll put this in your room, Kagome, while you prepare to
leave.”
Riquo took her seat next to Sango and Mama, “I’m so sorry
about Ms. Mushiko, Riquo. She can be a pain sometimes and she’s always giving
Kagome a hard time as well,” Mama said.
Riquo waved her hand, “Don’t worry about it, I didn’t have
any problems there.”
They all got up and got ready to leave for the Feudal Era.
Riquo undid the concealment spell and went up into Kagome's room where her and o’s o’s clothes were folded neatly. They said their
goodbyes, Mama promising to tell Souta goodbye from all of them. Riquo was the
last to say goodbye to Grandpa and Mama.
Riquo hugged Mama, “Thank you for being so kind to me Mama,
you have no idea how much I appreciate it.”
“Your mother would have wished that I take care of you,
Riquo, think nothing of it. Just make sure you come back and see me,” Mama said
hugging her back.
Riquo pulled away, wiping away tears that welled up in her
eyes, “I promise you I will. And I will put my life on the line for Kagome as
well.”
“I know you will.”
“Take care all of you!”
“Bye Mama!!”
Grandpa came running out of the house, “Kagome wait!”
She stopped as Grandpa ran up to holding a small picture
frame and gave it to her, “This is for you, I made a copy of it the other day.”
“Grandpa…it’s…it’s Hatchu.”
“That’s right. Riquo can probably take you to his clan so
you can learn more about him and your heritage.”
“Thank you Grandpa.”
Kagome, Riquo, Sango and Kilala jumped down the well,
memories of their ‘girl’s night out’ lingering behind them.
~*~*~
The sun was setting when they reached the other side of the
well. The three girls sat on the edge of the well, admiring the beauty the sun
cast over the forest as it dipped low into the earth.
“Inuyasha and the others probably sensed us coming out of
the well. They’re waiting for us,” Riquo said as the sun made a final stand in
the sky before it disappeared below the forest trees. Kilala jumped off Sango’s
shoulder and transformed, a sign for them to get on
her back.
Kagome stretched and yawned, “I am pretty tired, how about
you guys?”
“I’m beat from yesterday. I just want to curl up and go to
sleep,” Sango said.
“Well it wasn’t that long ago when we woke up,” Riquo said,
hopping onto Kilala.
Kagome laughed, “I guess the sunset just has that kind of
affect on people.”
Kilala took off into the air while Kagome and Sango talked
happily, but Riquo was behind them clinging to Kilala's fur, her face pale. She
shook her head, what’s wrong with me? I
feel like I’m going to be sick!
They landed outside of Kaede’s hut where Inuyasha, Kouga,
Miroku, Shippo and Kaede were waiting for them. The moment Kilala touched the
ground, Shippo bounded into Kagome's arms, nuzzling her and shouting at how
delighted he was to see her. Kouga helped her down, while Miroku helped Sango
down, keeping his lecherous hands to himself, which pleased Sango. Inuyasha
walked timidly up to where Riquo sat on Kilala’s back.
“Hey you,” he said gently.
Riquo opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
Inuyasha frowned and reached out to grab her arm.
“Are you ok?” Before Inuyasha touched her, Kilala jumped
back and snarled at him.
“KILALA! What is wrong with you!?”
Sango shouted coming towards the enraged fire cat. Riquo collapsed onto
Kilala's back and Kilala took flight into the air towards the forest at speed
none of them knew she possessed.
“HEY! GET BACK HERE DAMNIT!” Inuyasha shouted, running after
them, the rest following close behind. Shippo bounced off of Kagome and stood
next to Kaede, watching them disappear into the forest.
Inuyasha stopped in the forest and signaled for the rest to
stop so he could listen. Suddenly Kouga’s head snapped to his left and Inuyasha
gasped, hearing it as well. It was the sound of someone heaving.
They ran until they came into a clearing where Riquo and
Kilala were. Riquo was on all fours, heaving and vomiting while Kilala held her
hair back in her jaws, nuzzling her back in comfort. Inuyasha slowly crept up
to Riquo’s side, regarding the fire cat with distance. Riquo stopped throwing
up, and spit, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
“Inuyasha…” she rasped. Inuyasha knelt at her side, leaning
her against his chest. Kilala let go of her hair and encircled the two, facing
Kagome and the others.
“Inuyasha, what’s wrong with her?” Kouga asked, holding
Kagome's hand and stepping forward, Sango and Miroku close behind.
“I don’t know. What the hell happened while you three were
gone?” Inuyasha demanded.
“We were attacked by coral snake demons. Riquo did most of
the fighting, but her wounds healed,” Sango said patting Kilala on the head in
gratitude.
Inuyasha turned Riquo to face him on the ground and sniffed
her all over. When he got to her skirt, he reeled back, holding his noise.
Riquo started lifting her skirt, “B…bite…” she whispered.
“Kilala, come here,” Inuyasha laid Riquo against Kilala and
lifted up her skirt. On her right thigh, very
close to her womanhood, were two holes that were badly infected and reeked of poison. Oh
shit… Inuyasha pulled her skirt back down and quickly lifted her into his
arms.
“We have to get her back to Kaede’s! She was bitten on her
thigh,” Inuyasha ran as fast as he could through the forest towards Kaede’s.
Sango and Miroku hopped on Kilala and Kouga ran with Kagome along side
Inuyasha. Please be ok my love, please.
Kagome held back the tears that threatened to fall. I’m getting déjà vu. This really has got to
stop happening.
