24. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
By early summer, Nozomi was walking, though rather unsteadily. Although she had only mastered a few words, it was clear that she understood much of what was said to her. She had begun to share her meals with the rest of the family, having grown a pair of small but very sharp fangs. Her mother, assured that her development was perfectly normal for a part youkai child, relaxed a little and stopped worrying about every single deviation from the timetables in the books they had brought from her world.
As things turned out, they had all been wrong in assuming that all of the fragments of the Shikon no Tama had been found by either Naraku or themselves. Two more had been recovered from a large snake youkai that attacked the settlement in early June, only to be easily dispatched by Sango’s Hiraikotsu. Once the jewel shards were retrieved from the remains, the monk unsealed the kazaana in his hand, disposing of the corpse.
The hanyou had come to realize that his state of mind was the only factor that could control his transformations, and had become adept at switching forms at will. Of course, no amount of solitary practice could guarantee that he would be able to do so in an emergency situation. Still, they would each continue to practice their various fighting techniques as long as necessary.
It had been a day much like any other. Since the village men had hunted the previous day, their hunt leader wasn’t needed, so the hanyou had gone hunting for his family. On this occasion, though, he had a companion. Even though not related by blood, he had assumed responsibility for the kit’s welfare when he had mated his adopted mother and, as he put it, no pup of his would be unable to hunt for his food.
They spent much of the afternoon stalking small animals through the forest, using their sensitive ears and noses to locate prey that couldn’t be seen. After the fourth time that Shippou scared off a rabbit by being a little too eager, the hanyou took over the hunt, bringing down a small deer in record time. The little kitsune helped him to gut and skin the animal, clearly disappointed by his earlier failures.
The hanyou understood clearly what the kit was going through. He had, after all, been orphaned himself at an age only slightly older than Shippou himself. “It’s not that bad, kid.” At the little youkai’s wide-eyed expression of surprise, he continued, “You’ve got it a little easier than I did. Sure I was a little older than you when I lost my mother, but I didn’t have anybody to help me learn to hunt--I had to teach myself, and it got pretty hungry before I got the hang of it.”
“Really?”
The hanyou grinned broadly. “You bet, kid. Tell you what--you take a couple of hours every day to practice your stalking. When you make your first kill, we’ll have a celebration. After all, you won’t be a kid any more--you’ll be part of what keeps this family alive.”
He picked up the cleaned carcass of the deer, carrying it effortlessly back to their home in the cave. The kitsune watched in silence for a few seconds, then picked up the rolled skin and followed. Maybe he would be allowed to help in processing the hide. Of course, once he began to bring down prey of his own, he would keep any skins for his own use, so he would want to know how to prepare them.
The first hint that everything was not quite all right came when the hanyou returned home with the deer carcass. In addition to his mate harvesting vegetables for dinner, Sango’s youkai companion paced back and forth across the clearing in her large form, pausing now and then to sniff the air, rumbling a little deep in her chest at something that even the hanyou’s inhumanly acute senses could not detect.
Inuyasha was growing more and more uneasy with the feline youkai’s relentless pacing. Sniffing delicately, he could detect no reason for Kirara’s odd behavior: there seemed to be no hint of danger in the area, and there was no indication that the youkai would be looking for a mate in the immediate future. Of course, even if she did, it was possible that they might never know unless that union resulted in offspring: these particular firecat youkai tended to be solitary, coming together briefly to mate before once again going their separate ways.
Still, he made a point of keeping eyes, ears, and nose all on full alert while he finished butchering the deer. Even so, there was still no reason to think that anything was wrong.
The family sat around the table, enjoying the venison stir fry Kagome had put together as an experiment. Since the result seemed to have been a resounding success, she decided that she would have to remember the details so that she could recreate it some other time.
Rising from her place at the table, she reached for Nozomi, only to stop short at the sight of her daughter staring intently at the cave entrance, a rough growl erupting from her throat. The hanyou leaped to his feet, glaring at the curtain of vines that concealed the entrance from the outside. “Naraku,” he said.
