Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha, nor make money from this story. |
This is the very first piece of fanfic I ever wrote. I was eighteen at the time, and I hadn't written for fun in nearly ten years. This part no longer exists as it appears here; the first meeting between Son Goku and the InuYasha crew will take place during a battle with Mouryoumaru. The characterizations and kind of weak, but it was a start.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Battlefield 1542
Chapter II: First Blood
Sango ran through the Western Forest as fast as her legs could possibly carry her. Her hunt had gone horrifcally awry. She had been pursuing a small snake demon and had it cornered, but had unwittingly entered its den, and its parents were extremely large, extremely strong, and extremely displeased. Despite the weight of Hiraikotsu on her back, she managed to run faster than any of her assailants, and now possessed a significant lead on them. However, her legs were becoming weaker and weaker by the moment, and the need for a hiding place had revealed itself."Kami, help me" she rasped.
Sango soon received an answer to her prayer. Hurtling over branches and decaying tree stumps, she spotted a fox hole, one large enough to conceal her and her weapon entirely. She leapt in and stilled her breathing, hearing her heartbeat in her ears and the familiar slither of her prey and its family moving precariously close. The demons were mere yards away, and Sango was nearly certain she had been discovered. She closed her eyes and contained her fear, for it would betray her position if left unchecked. A seeming eternity passed, but the snake demons moved on, seemingly unwary of Sango's nearby presence. When she could no longer hear the sounds of her enemies, Sango crawled out of her foxhole and rubbed her eyes, for she had squeezed them shut with the force of an anti-Miroku slap. This action was a mistake, for she could not see the single snake demon that had remained.
In one swift assault, the demon bolted across the forest floor, wrapped itself around Sango's waist, and positioned its fangs at her throat, ready to saturate it with caustic poison. Sango pulled on Hiraikotsu so hard she broke its carrying sling, but she didn't care. Her self defense was far more important than that. With superhuman strength, the demon slayer raised the wing-shaped blade above her head, preparing to bring it down on her reptilian opponent, only to have it knocked away by a far larger one. The entire lot of them had returned! Sango attempted to comprehend her situation; the snakes had gone, but they were back so soon? Suddenly, the explanation dawned on her. The snake she was trying to kill a few moments ago was merely a reconnaisance unit, they main force had be lying in wait, observing the front line for a signal of her movement. In a frenzy, the taijya tried to reach for her katana, but the cold-blooded muscle that clung to her restrained her arms. Sango's spirits drooped; she had betrayed her demon slayer heritage with her impatience. She had committed tactical suicide, and now she was going to die for real. She had left her trusty fire-cat Kirara with Inuyasha and the others, and they were ten miles off, still at Kaede's village. Nothing was coming to help. Nothing would save her.
"Kohaku, Father, wait for me......." Sango cried.
The snake clamped its mouth down on Sango's throat. She shrieked loud as the fangs pierced her skin. Beginning to black out from the strength of the snake's jaw, the female warrior's body fell limp and she fully expected to feel the venom shoot into her right then and there. Critical seconds passed, but nothing happened. Although her mind was swimming in pain, the taijya succeeded in forming one rational thought.
"Why am I alive?" she pondered.
Looking into the starry night sky, Sango saw the answer. Something was flying toward her at enormous velocity, and the snake demons were scurrying to avoid it. The snake wrapped around the huntress's waist loosened its oral grip on her throat, and her vision cleared. That thing in the sky had arms and legs; it was a human being, or so she thought. This "human" impacted the ground foot-first with tremendous force, leaving boot-shaped craters and shaking the very earth. It then dug its heels into the ground and took flight again, this time flying parallel to the forest floor on a collision course with the snake demons.
Sango felt time slow down as this man began to spin heel over head, outstretched his right leg, and caught her would-be killer in the jaw with his boot. The demon careened into the treeline, hissing madly all the way. A sickening crunch resounded throughout Japan, and that particular reptile never breathed again.
The male warrior slowed to a drift, taking inventory of the remaining demons and assessing any threat. Sango could see, but the color had not yet returned to her vision. Regardless, she looked her savior over as he took off after the other demons. He couldn't be Sesshoumaru, this warrior fought with a vengeance and an emotion that Sesshoumaru had yet to even learn. He wasn't Inuyasha, either, as Tetsuseiga was nowhere in sight. This man wielded his body with military precision and he fought to win. Sango was amazed at his speed and strength; Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru combined could not even begin to approach what she was seeing now. The color returned and she observed in better detail. He wore an battered, orange battle gi and a blue one below that. Sango resolved that she had never seen him before and drew up a different question: was he a human or a demon?
The snake demons were being routed by this warrior. They became enraged as every tail-whip and bite attempt was deflected or absorbed by their opponent's martial skill. Still, there was only one martial artist and ten demon-snakes, which prevented the warrior from finishing his task quickly. The demons soon realized that the slayer was the object of their opponent's defense, and set off to divide his attention. Nine demons surrounded the soldier. One snake broke off from the main group and made its way toward Sango. As he punched one demon and kicked another, the fighter noticed his retreating enemy. He set off after it, but his youkai nemeses took advantage of his distraction by coiling around his body and pulling tight, trying to crush him.
"D-damn!" the warrior snarled, "I can't move!"
He looked on in horror as the solitary reptile silently made its way along the leaves and branches of the forest floor and slithered up the demon-slayer's body. She made not a sound as this happened; she was still recovering from the first time. The snake pressed its fangs into the holes made in the woman's neck by his dead brother, and stilled.
Goku found himself completely suppressed by the reptilian bodies around him. He cursed himself for being stupid enough to fall for their trap and now the demon slayer's death became more probability than possibility. He struggled against his oppressors and wished he could summon his power, but his journey to this time had taken that out of him. He could definitely win if he got angry enough, but Goku realized that the woman would likely be dead by then.
"Please, warrior, help me!" Sango cried.
"No problem, miss" he called.
Straining against three-thousand pounds of reptilian muscle, Goku took a step forward.
"I have won every battle I have fought in, I will not lose now!" he grunted.
The snake demons discovered they did not and could not cover his feet. They remedied this problem by toppling Goku onto his back.
The snake around Sango's waist whispered into her ear.
"You shall not survive this night, slayer wench" it said.
With that, the demon shot its corrosive venom into Sango's neck, tainting her blood. All of her unspent energy formed into a terrified scream that ripped loose from her throat and shook the trees.
Goku couldn't see Sango, but he knew what had happened. Dark thoughts clouded his mind. She was dying, and here he was, lying on his back? He was screwing up again, just like he did on Earth when he fought Buu. Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo - they all died because he decided he was carrying too much. He didn't even try to go after them. Worse, this troubled woman probably had friends. They all cared about her and they would never let it go. Goku's mind wandered to them. He saw a silver-haired dog demon, a priest, a young woman, and most terribly, a little fox-demon child. The saiyan couldn't stand the thought of having to get down on his knees and tell the little boy that he had messed up and been stupid, that his friend wasn't coming home because he was lying on his back, taking a nap on a warm bed of reptilian flesh. He could deal with Vegeta, but children, Kami help him.
This was a war. This was a war he was losing. Goku made up his mind. He would take possession of this war and make it his own. He would defend this woman until he was a bloody pulp. He owed it to her. He owed it to that little fox boy. He could feel his mind slipping from his grasp. Something was taking over. Goku knew what it was.
White flame erupted around Goku's body. He welcomed the feeling of that Saiyan firepower enveloping him, burning him into a newer and better soldier. He strained against the reptile flesh, and felt it rip apart under the pressure. He knelt low and pressed his hands into the earth. He began to scream.
KAI!
O!
KEN!
The white flame seared red and the leftover demon flesh incinerated in the near-nuclear heat.
Sango's pestilence disengaged from her and she stumbled backward in a venom-induced delirium, tripping over Hiraikotsu.
"Bastard!!!" Goku snarled, "My memories are NOT YOUR PLAYTHING!!!"
The snake-demon cowered before Goku. Fear soaked its mind and succumbed to bone-cracking pain as Goku seized its throat. All emotion left Goku's face and soul.
"I have killed before. You will be no different" he stated coldly.
The pressure on the snake's trachea increased precariously. Goku closed his eyes and clenched his hand with all the strength he could muster. The snake's neck snapped, and blood soaked his hand. Goku tossed the corpse aside and contemplated his own existence. He had wanted to travel time and find a quiet spot to settle down. He wanted a place with no wars that required him to fight. Feudal Japan looked ideal, but he had not counted on the existence of demons. He wanted to stop killing but here he was again, starting another war. Goku knew that for every evil life he took, there were three more ready to go. This was not going to stop here. He remembered his demon-slayer protectorate, and turned to ask her forgiveness.
"Miss, I - " He was cut short by her angry cry.
"Demon! I s-shall end y-your miserable e-existence this night!" she stammered.
Goku was shocked. He was no demon. He had done nothing to her. Goku realized the truth of the situation and berated himself for failing to defend her. The snake venom was affecting her mind, driving her insane. His inflamed aura was making him a tempting target, too. He dropped out of his state of power and attempted to bring her mind about.
"Please, put down your weapon! The snake venom is tricking your senses! I am not a demon!" he
pleaded.
Sango pulled Hiraikotsu back and prepared to throw it. The venom burned in her veins and ate at her rationality. She was hearing the martial artist that saved her life but was seeing the sadistic grin of Naraku.
"B-back! Back damn it! I'll kill you!" she screamed.
It was futile. Goku could not dissuade her. He felt a small tinge of fear in his mind as he stared into her lunacy filled dark brown eyes. Hiraikotsu had to weigh at least 300 pounds, and she could lift it like it was a tree branch. His defeat of the snake demons had come at a heavy price; the Kai-o-ken had been forced by the angry memories of his past, not his free will. It weighed down on his health and he wasn't even sure he could hold on to consciousness for the forseeable future. If the demon-slayer threw her weapon, there was no chance he could catch it, a slim chance he could deflect it, and only a slightly better chance of evading it entirely. Sango didn't give him time to think.
HIRAIKOTSU!
Goku's eyes widened as the great iron wing took to the air. It moved gracefully, with perfect aerodynamicism. He admired it as it edged closer to him; it was like a beautifully-engineered Kienzan. He pulled his body with all his might and it missed him by mere inches. He thought he was safe, but he was wrong. Sango stumbled at him, her katana drawn and in hand, trying to cut him open. He leapt to his side to avoid her, and then she shot him a delirious smile of victory.
"D-die, Naraku!" she hissed.
It dawned on Goku that Sango had been herding him to a specific part of the forest. He turned around just in time to see Hiraikotsu come back for him. He couldn't move. The great wing blade caught him in the head. It lifted him up and dug into his cheek and forehead, directly over his left eye. Goku reeled in a state of shock, disbelieving the enormous pain that now emanated from his face. He was lucky; his hard head had absorbed the blow and Hiraikotsu fell to the ground, bent into useless scrap metal.
Goku could barely see, much less think. All he could do was scream. His pain-laced howl jarred Sango from her venom-induced madness. She saw him stumble blindly and latch onto a nearby tree with his right hand for support, while covering his new wound with his left in an attempt to stop the blood that was staining the ground in copious amounts. She saw what had once been Hiraikotsu, and she felt the truth in her heart. She had used her weapon against a fellow human being! Her trembling hand dropped the sword and though the venom in her body was quickly eroding her strength, she tried to run to his side. She let her guard down, unfortunately, and the disoriented taijya met the backside of Goku's right fist. It had been a defensive reaction. If it were offensive, Sango would be dead. Instead, she was merely dying.
Sango's limp body sailed twenty feet, her flight stopped by a pine tree. She collapsed bloodily to the ground. Goku's senses alerted him to the eerie silence that shrouded the clearing. He looked at his right hand and felt it throb, and knew what he had done.
"Miss?" he asked, with growing anguish.
There was no answer.
"Answer me, please!" he cried, as the gravity of his actions hit him.
Goku looked behind him, and in right eye he saw her, completely lifeless at the base of a tree. He fell to his knees and tears began to stream from his eyes, especially his wounded one. He crawled to her, his soul disintegrating from the pain of hurting an innocent. He pressed his right ear to her chest and listened. She was still alive, barely. Her breathing was becoming more and more shallow, and Goku was becoming more and more afraid. He then remembered the fox boy, and willed that he would be the last person responsible for this woman's death. He took her small hands in his own and pressed them all to her chest, seeking her heart. He stilled his mind and concentrated only on the demon-slayers life. He wasn't sure if this was going to work given their conditions, but he had to try. At long last, he felt that familiar pull as his energy seeped into her body. He gave her his energy, his life-force, his all. He made sure it worked its way to her soul, warming it, bringing it back. He was getting dizzy; he wasn't sure how much power he could give her, but he would give as much as she needed. His life was no longer important. Goku's ki washed away the venom from Sango's blood and mind, and she awoke groggily to see him knelt in front of her. She also noticed his hands on her chest.
"Hentai perv-" she halted her beration when she saw his face.
Goku was a wreck. Sango felt something wrench at her heart as she peered upon his wound, still gushing blood. She felt it break in two when she saw his tears. In his eyes, Sango saw pain, one born of frantic regret and sickening fear. She felt somehow responsible for it, and she couldn't stand the thought. Goku spoke.
"M-my name....... is Goku.....ungh...and I-I am s-sorry. None.......agh...of this is your f-fault. I failed ....to defend you. All I c-can do now is give you m-my energy" he struggled, his emotions and injuries interfering with his speech.
Sango became conscious of the warmth surrounding and permeating her. Was he doing this?
"W-what are you?" she asked.
Goku felt the Saiyan pride and Saiyan shame return to him.
"I'm....not important. All that matters......is your survival" he replied.
Suddenly, he jerked his head to the side, and his eyes darted around the forest. Something was coming. Its strength was considerable, and with his injured eye, Goku was in no condition to fight it.
Inuyasha glided effortlessly above the trees, with Kagome slung around his back. He had felt a tremendous burst of power coming from somewhere in the forest. He also knew that Sango was in the same area, and that hastened his advance. He landed abruptly and lifted his nose into the air.
"What is it, Inuyasha? What do you smell?" Kagome asked.
"Blood. I smell Sango's blood" he grunted.
He also smelled rivers of snake blood, and the blood of something with great power. If there had been a battle, it was sure to have been a chaotic one.
Goku gave Sango one final burst of power, then stood weakly.
"Your friends are here. I will leave you now" he whispered.
Inuyasha and Kagome arrived soon enough to see an orange figure limp off then disappear into the sky. Kagome cried out when she saw Sango slumped back against a tree. Kagome hopped off Inuyasha and the two ran to Sango's side.
"Gods, Sango, are you alive?" Kagome gasped.
"Y-yes" Sango choked.
Inuyasha looked at the murky death that littered the forest. He saw a the body of a snake swinging lifeless from a tree branch and the charred remains of nine more in a crater a few steps away. Sango couldn't possibly have done this. The body in the tree, perhaps, but snake fillets? He then spied what had once been Hiraikotsu, now bent into a pathetic zigzag.
"Sango, what the hell happened here?" he demanded.
"I was hunting a snake demon, but I discovered its den, and its family overwhelmed me" she replied.
"Did you kill ALL of the demons yourself?" Inuyasha asked, in total surprise.
"No, I didn't. A man named Goku did. I have never seen strength like that in my life." Sango answered.
Kagome felt Sango's heart sink.
"Sango, why are you so sad?" she requested.
"H-hiraikotsu, I threw it at him. The snake venom drove me mad. It made me think he was Naraku" she whimpered.
"Did it hit him?" Kagome prodded.
"Y-yes" Sango began to cry.
"Is he still alive?" Inuyasha demanded once more.
"I-I don't know. The blade bounced right off his head. I tried to help him, but he hit me back" Sango sobbed.
Inuyasha's face hardened. No one gets away with hurting any member of his pack.
"Don't worry, Sango, I'll get the bastard for you" he snarled.
"NO! Please don't!" she begged, "I felt great sadness in him. He crawled to me and kept me alive."
"How?" Kagome inquired.
"He gave me his energy" she said, steeling her self, "I have never felt this strong before."
Sango raised her hand and clenched it, feeling the new force resounding through her body.
"Can you walk?" Inuyasha asked, trying to mask his concern.
"Yes, I'm okay" she said.
"Then let's get going. Shippo is probably worrying his ass off right now." said Inuyasha.
Inuyasha slung Hiraikotsu over his back and helped the demon-slayer to her feet. Kagome pulled Sango's arm over her shoulder and together, the three of them headed for Kaede's village. Sango looked back at the slaughter behind her, and resolved to find her new friend and repay him in any way she could.
