Chapter 24: Betrayed
Standing in the nearly ruined master bedchamber, Emi’s weeping was the only sound Sesshoumaru could hear. The dwindling battle outside simmered down to mere crackles of burning wood and smoke of charred flesh. The fighting had ended with Soun’ga’s ultimate attack, Dragon Twister. It wrought the totally annihilation of rebels who thought they could overthrow the Southern lord, but victory came at a very high price.
Toga finally entered what remained of his brother’s home. This was something that could be rebuilt, crops could be re-sown. A life; however, was something totally different and this was a responsible that the Great Dog Demon didn’t take lightly.
“Please… my lord… you can save him,” Emi pleaded with Toga.
No longer being able to bear the sight of his aunt, Sesshoumaru turned around and walked out of the room. There were still a few rebels about that was waiting to finish what they had started, but Sesshoumaru was not going to allow them to plan anything else ever again or allow his uncle’s sacrifice be for naught. He will crush what little hope and dreams that the vermin had, thinking that they were better than them, Shiro Inu Youkai. He left knowing that his father would handle Emi.
Kneeling in front of his sister-in-law, Toga saw how broken she was as she cradle her mate’s unmoving form.
“Why do you not revive him, Toga? He’s your brother!”
“I cannot, Emi. Once Tenseiga heals, it cannot do so a second time,” Toga explained.
“What do you mean ‘a second time’?”
“I already healed Gorai several centuries ago when we fought the dragon demon, Ryu. He took a hit meant for me… He knew… I told him that I could only revive him once with Tenseiga and that he must tread carefully and this is the reason why he never went into battle,” Toga continued in a more somber tone.
Weeping harder than before, Emi lowered her face to Gorai’s. He stood in between her and her assailants to prevent them from harming her and their unborn pup—his last heir.
With that thought passing through her mind, she worked up the courage to ask, “Did you know about Naraku?”
Casting his golden gaze to his brother, Toga steeled himself for the fall-out to come.
“Yes.”
Sniffling, Emi’s tears were renewed once more. “So, I was nothing more than his breeding bitch and a means to divert a scandal from the rest of the clan.”
“I cannot answer that for you, you must ask my father that question; but if it is any consolation to you, Emi, he did love you. If he did not, he would not have remained with you if his heart belonged to another,” Toga replied.
Gripping her by the arms, Toga eased her up to her feet. “Come, Daiki and Miso will take care of his body, you must get some rest.”
And with those words, Emi looked upon her mate one last time before succumbing to her grief and exhaustion.

The sun was already at its’ zenith by the time amber colored orbs blinked open. Inuyasha promptly threw-up what little food that was left in his stomach. The waves crashed along the shore where the water met the white sandy beach. And by the gathering of the wood debris and what little cargo that left a floating trail in the ocean, Inuyasha’s only logical conclusion what that he was on some ship.
Glancing about, Inuyasha was confused as to how he came to be this far from home. He remembered taking a bath the night before but he was so tired that he couldn’t think clearly; and he knew at some point his cousin was attempting something. Again his mind was coming up blank.
He should have done more to her than just cut her. Inuyasha should simply ripped out her throat and be done with the jealous bitch. There would be no way in hell that he was going to give up Sesshoumaru. His brother belonged to him and Inuyasha would be damn if he wasn’t going to fight for what was his. Just in that moment his stomach lurched again.
Quickly he felt his tummy, he felt around his small bulge making sure his pup was still intact. He couldn’t lose this one. Sighing in absolute relief, Inuyasha was able to detect the small life energy from within his womb.
Standing on wobbly legs, Inuyasha began his zigzag trek further inland. There had to be a village or something near-by, anything that could tell him where in all of where his bitch cousin managed to get him dumped. He knew she was somehow behind him being here.
Then one piece of the cargo caught his eye. The tattered flag of the doomed ship layed half buried in the moistened sand. A fire breathing dragon at one time or another was beautifully stitched into the thick white woven cloth, now it was faded and dingy from the harsh elements of the sea.
Moving swiftly, Inuyasha now knew where he was and it didn’t bode well for him. He needed get as far away from here as soon as possible. The high cliffs should have been a dead give-a-way but whatever he was drugged with was still coursing in his body making his brain a bit sluggish.
He was in the one place that his father told him to never venture to alone and never without a weapon (both of which he was sadly lacking), a place that brought dread and fear, a place where no one ever returned from—the Valley of the Dragon Bone Spirit—Ryukotsusei.

When the attack came, Kaori was not prepared for it. It caught her off-guard and she knew that she was in trouble. She could feel the slow agonizing burn of the cuts to her other arm and should where the shurikan-like blades sliced her delicate skin.
“He… he… I thought… I thought by getting rid of Inuyasha, I would finally have Lord Sesshoumaru as a more worthy mate than Naraku!”
Gritting his teeth in anger, Takehiko immediately turned away from his grand-heir. Tsukiko was so shocked by admission, she took a step back.
“Takehiko, what are we going to do?” she asked fearing for the worse, turning to her mate for guidance.
He wasn’t sure how he was going to answer that question as he’d been pondering it himself. The one demon the clan had no dealings or alliances with; Kaori has now placed them in a precarious situation with her foolish actions.
“How did you manage to sale your cousin into slavery? And how did you think that Sesshoumaru, his mate, is not going to find out about this!” Takehiko vented.
“I am Sesshoumaru’s mate! I should have been his mate, not that bastard!”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Takehiko raised his hand to knock some sense into Kaori, but Tsukiko beat him to it.
Tears welled up in her eyes and Kaori shrunk back in fear, cradling her face where her grandmother struck her.
“You stupid, stupid child! Do you have any idea what you have done?! Not only have you incurred the wrath of Sesshoumaru for selling his mate, his pupped mated, but you have also incited a war,” Tsukiko snarled out getting ready to lunge for Kaori again but she held herself back.
“We have not maintained peace within our clan for generations by bowing down and enslaving our own! And by doing this you have ensured that we will! You’ll be lucky if Taisho doesn’t skin you alive once he learns of this treachery or if you’re unlucky, Sesshoumaru will just beheads you, but knowing him he would make sure that you die of a slow, exusitating death. However, my son will bring you back in order to punish for doing harm to his sons,” Tsukiko said before turning her back to her grand-heir.
Having heard enough, Takehiko indicated to the guards, who silently watched the heated exchange, to take Kaori away.
Struggling against the grip of their tight hold to no avail, Kaori cried out for them to let her go.
Her whines could be heard throughout the palace until they were nothing more than a whisper as the guards dragged her further and deeper into the depths of the palace to the dungeons.
Finally making their way back to their son’s study, Tsukiko and Takehiko was greeted with messenger from the Southern lands.
Unrolling the scroll, Takehiko sat down behind the desk and read it out loud in order for his mate to hear after dismissing the young inu.
Dear Otousan,
By the time you receive this letter, Gaiki, Sesshoumaru, and I will be on our way back home. The conflict here has ended and much needs to be accomplished. Naraku and Kaori must hurry with all speed to get here. I will be expecting their departure soon after we return home. Miso has taken over putting things back in order until Naraku arrives.
The rebels have been taken care of; however, there were a few causalities during the conflict.
My next words I write, I write with a heavy heart. It is my deepest regret that Gorai, Lord of the Southern Land, your second son, has passed from this realm protecting his mate and unborn pup. Due to the delicate nature of Naraku’s birth, neither Gorai nor Miso has informed him of his blood-line and status as heir apparent to the Southern Lands.
Emi has chosen to remain at the palace. It has been advised by the healer for her not travel at this time owing to the fact of recent events, Emi will more than likely go into labor before the pup is ready to be born. I dare not risk her life or that of the pup’s, Gorai’s last heir.
Give my love to my mates, Inuyasha and Rin—I long to see them.
Inu no Taisho
oOoOoOo
The following morning started with a light rain shower that lasted past noon and came down in torrential buckets. Takehiko had summoned Naraku to inform him of the affairs of the Southern Lands—a task he was not particularly looking forward to.
“I’m sorry I’m late, my lord, I had been searching for Kaori to tend to our daughter but I have not been able to locate her. One of Kagura’s nurses is watching her until my return, how my I service you,” Naraku said giving a bow as he entered the study.
“Have seat, Naraku. I must inform you that your mate has been thrown in the dungeon for crimes against the House of Inu no Taisho,” Takehiko said noticing the confused looked on the other’s face. “I take it that you were not aware of the manipulations of what Kaori has woven?”
Shaking his head negatively, Naraku for once was happy that he was not part of whatever scheme Kaori had hatching. “No, I’ve been taking care of my youngling, sir. What foolish stunt has she pulled this time?”
Smiling sadly, Takehiko got up to pace the floor choosing his words carefully.
“I can only say that with the imminent arrival of my son and grand-heir, Kaori’s time here is short and that we might be preparing to go to war. But I digress…” Takehiko exhaled slowly; unsure how this bit of news would be received “…it is my duty as clan patriarch to inform you, son of General Miso and first born and heir of Gorai, Lord of the Southern Lands, you are now the reigning lord of those lands.”
Naraku stared dumbly at the tall demon lord. He was what? Surely this must be some kind of mistake!
“You’re lying. My father would have said something of this magnitude if it were true. Besides, wouldn’t Lord Gorai have to have died for me to inherit the title of Lord?”
The silence was un-nerving.
“I received word late last night that my son has died at the hands of the rebels protecting his mate. Since you are his first born, you are entitled to all that it entails as the Southern Lord, Naraku. Do not throw away this opportunity to become more than what you are now.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? I am a half-demon! I do not have the power or the respect of that of a full demon. Don’t try to insult my intelligence with your false admirations,” Naraku nearly shouted.
“And do insult mine by thinking that I do not know what it is that you seek—the Skikon no Tama.”
Naraku paused at having been caught unawares by Takehiko’s declaration.
Nearly smiling at Naraku’s shocked expression, Takehiko continued, “That is a jewel you cannot possess without killing both the host and the one who place it there.”
Crimson eyes widen a friction from the information—he did not know.
“Naraku, you have your own inner strength that you are yet to tap into just like Inuyasha—and with time you will gain the respect as the ruler of the Southern Lands. But make no mistake, if you should deviate from this path that has been set before you—an enemy should you make of me, of this clan—I will not hesitate to destroy you and your remaining blood-line,” Takehiko said allowing his words to sink in.
Taking a half step back, Naraku knew what the elder inu lord spoke of. He heard the rumors of Takehiko’s rampage, decimating entire villages during the course of a single night leaving naught a trace of any living soul; and apparently this was a trait that has been passed on to Toga and to Sesshoumaru.
Not wanting anything to happen to his youngling and he didn’t want Kagura turning out to be like Kaori—conniving and power hungry—he wanted Kagura to be great by her own merit, not by taking it from someone or something else.
Steeling his resolve, the newly appointed Lord of the South replied, “Alright, Lord Takehiko, I accept.”
Smiling for all he’s worth, Takehiko nodded his head. “A wise decision that you will not come to regret; and please call me grandfather or Takehiko, which ever you prefer.”
At that very moment, a servant entered the study, bowing respectfully to them.
“Sorry for disturbing you, my lord, but the sentries at the entry gates says that you son, Lord Toga has returned,” she stated then quickly left to assist with the welcoming home feast.
“Well, Naraku, you might as well joint me. This will be your first official duty to greet the lord of this house. Once everything has settled, I will help you all that I can and you may call upon me at any time should you have need of me.”
The two left together to meet Toga. Takehiko sighed; there was so much chaos in the aftermath of his son’s death. He hasn’t had the time to mourn the loss of his beloved Gorai, his third born pup. He wondered how Tsukiko was doing. She collapsed in the study once she realized that Gorai was dead. He summoned Moriyaku to tend to his darling mate.
The news was too much of a shock for Tsukiko to handle, on top of Inuyasha’s kidnapping—no thanks to Kaori.
How was he going to explain this debacle to Taisho? Worse still, how was he going to explain it to Sesshoumaru? Kaori without a doubt would be dead before the sun raises.
oOoOoOo
Tired, bone wary and in need of comfort from his mates, Toga along with Sesshoumaru, Daiki, Takemaru and the rest of his army, they literally dragged themselves through the front gates.
“Taisho, welcome home, my son,” Takehiko said before engulfing his in his massive arms.
“Otousan,” Toga answered, voice creaking, trembling with sadness. Raising his head, Toga searched the small gathering of his servants. “Where are Kaasan and Izumi and Izayoi?”
“Yes, grandfather, I would like to know that as well. It is only proper that the matriarch of this family be present as well as the lord’s mates; and where is Inuyasha? He should be here also welcoming his father and mate home.”
Having the look of defeat etched in his handsome features, Takehiko answered, “The news of Gorai has sent your mother into a healing sleep. Izumi and Izayoi are keeping watch over her. They are taking turns. While one is with Tsukiko the other is with your pup.
“And as for Inuyasha… there was an incident a few nights ago…” Takehiko couldn’t finish speaking.
Sesshoumaru noticed the shift in the air—fear, panic, there were other scents mingling in the air. Taking in a deep breath, Sesshoumaru was able to discern all of them. The most prominent was blood—a youthful male youkai… and Kaori’s—it was coming from his bedchamber. Without waiting to hear what else his grand-sire was going to say, Sesshoumaru instantly appeared in his mangles set of rooms.
He walked outside to where the scent of blood was the strongest. He smelt his mate’s blood. Sesshoumaru knew that Inuyasha wouldn’t permit such a lowly youkai draw his blood, which only means one thing. Inuyasha pierced his palms to attack with his signature move, Blades of Blood.
From there, Sesshoumaru followed to where the trail of blood ended—the dungeons.
Before Kaori had a chance to blink, Sesshoumaru seized her by the throat.
“I will make this as simply as possible for you, cousin, and no amount of begging will change my mind but either way I kill you. Where is Inuyasha?
Struggling to breathe, Kaori rasped, “Ryu… Ryu has him.”
Narrowing his golden orbs. “Why would that dragon have my mate?”
The rancid stench of poison wafted into Kaori’s sensitive nose.
“Please, Sesshoumaru… I—I did it for us… for our future… please… I know I can be a better mate than that half-breed whore.”
Squeezing harder, Sesshoumaru dug his claws deeper into Kaori’s delicate slim neck, pumping minuscule amounts of poison into her body.
When he finally spoke, Sesshoumaru’s voice was a calm glacial storm, slowly brewing before unleashing its’ fury.
“How dare you allow my mate to be handed over to the dragon—in thinking that I would want you as a replacement? I would rather fuck a human than be with you again. You are not worthy to be my mate. You are nothing more than a spoiled pup that holds the title of princess—even if my seed was able to fill your womb, you would be nothing more but a liability to me—you cannot defend yourself or any offspring.
“Inuyasha is a fighter and a survivor and for your sake, he better remain whole and untouched. If he is not… this pain that you’re feeling will be nothing to the agony that you will suffer and you will beg for death.”
At that point, Sesshoumaru released her. Kaori fell to the cell’s floor in a wreathing heap, gasping to get fresh air into her lungs. Was this what it felt like to be dying? Her vision blurred as she could no longer feel her arms and legs. Her head was pounding from the lack of oxygen. Kaori’s mouth was extremely dry; yet she knew she was drooling.
Satisfied that his poison was doing its’ job as it should, Sesshoumaru imparted words of the assassin that he truly was, “My venom will not kill you—right now you have lost all body control. You will be paralyzed for quite some time.”
Turning and walking out the cell, Sesshoumaru didn’t look back.
He returned to his battered empty chambers to bath and change and refitted himself with his armor and weapons. He would see how his grandmother was doing and to ensure that his mother and Izayoi were doing well also.
He couldn’t imagine how Inuyasha’s mother was fairing over his disappearance. Sesshoumaru knew for a fact that Izumi was feeling anything but grief at his mate’s unknown fate. It did however, surprise him when shy laid a comforting hand on Izayoi’s once he delivered that bit of news to his mate’s human mother.
But it didn’t matter; nothing did, not without his mate. Sesshoumaru can finally admit that what he had been feeling all this time for Inuyasha was love. He loved his half-brother; it took this act of hatred for him to realize this emotion.
He would not allow anyone to harm Inuyasha and will stop at nothing to bring his mate home.
As he made his way out of the healing wing, Sesshoumaru made that silent promise to Izayoi as she openly wept for her only son’s safe return.
oOo TBC oOo
A/N: How was that? Was any expecting Gorai to die? Or the reveal that Naraku is his son? Think Sesshoumaru got his point across to Kaori? Don’t know? Well, stay tuned for the next chapter.
