Chapter 24
Everyone was still shaken up after Kagome’s little test. So they all decided to take the rest of the
day to relax. Kagome, Sesshomaru and Inu no Taisho
spent the rest of the day with the children.
As evening drew closer they were all feeling the stress of the upcoming
war. It didn’t help that Kagome’s
anxiety was rolling off her in waves.
They could all feel it and it only added to their own anxiety.
After dinner Kagome put the children to bed, trying to calm herself as she did so.
She still felt sad though, this may be the last time she saw her
children. She told them a story before
tucking them in. Once both of the
children were settled and everyone gave them a hug goodnight Sesshomaru and Kagome retired to their chambers. They needed to at least rest a few hours
before they left for the war.
They both went to bed happy just to hold each other. They didn’t know exactly what tomorrow would
bring, but they were going to make sure they did everything within their power
to turn it to their favor. Sesshomaru nuzzled Kagome’s neck, taking a deep breath of
her scent. They both drifted off to
sleep quickly, exhausted from the day.

Kagome put a barrier up around the group as they all traveled
to the clearing they had selected for the war.
The sun would be up in less than an hour and they knew they needed to
hurry. Once they arrived Kagome dropped
the barrier making their presence known and hiding most of her aura. She didn’t want Naraku
to know of her full abilities too soon, that was her trump card.
As the others prepared Kagome sat down to meditate. She focused her mind on Naraku
and could see him, Kagura, Kanna,
and his army leaving the castle to head in their direction. Kagome smiled and refocused her energy. She put both hands in the air and called
forth the items she needed.
“They are on their way,” Kagome said to the others as she
felt the items drawing near.
Everyone turned and watched as Kagome continued to call the
items to her. She focused so that Naraku would not notice what she was doing. With him out of the castle she hoped he would
not notice what was going on. They all
watched in shock as a ruby jewel and a diamond appeared out of nowhere to land
in her hands that were still raised to the sky.
She caught them and opened her eyes to look at them.
“What are those?” Inuyasha asked
stepping up behind her to look at the jewels.
“The ruby is Kagura’s heart which Naraku uses to control her and make her do his
bidding. The diamond is Kanna’s soul which he holds to control her.”
“I thought Kanna was just a
mindless puppet,” Sesshomaru said walking up to her.
“No, Naraku does not let anyone
know, not even Kagura or Kanna
herself, but he holds her soul so he can control her and she will obey without
even thinking about it. That is why Kanna is the way she is, by taking her soul he took away
anything that could pose a problem. She
now has no free will, no emotions to get in the way, nothing. Without her soul she is an empty shell, a
puppet, the perfect weapon.”
“So he took her soul to control her without problem? Why did he not do the same to Kagura?” Sesshomaru asked still
looking at the jewels and feeling oddly sad for the two women.
“Kagura was made first and he took
her heart. Later he realized that she
still held her own will and opinions, but she was already alive so he could not
take her soul. After that he made her
older sister Kanna and this time he took her soul to control
her. Since he made Kanna
without it and never had to threaten her with it she doesn’t know about it, and
he made sure Kagura didn’t know.”
They all felt sad for the two women who were merely pawns
given no chance to get away. They had
fought them many times not knowing what Naraku had
done and now they felt bad about the whole situation. Kagura and Kanna were just more pawns for Naraku
to use. They didn’t have a choice in
what they did.
“Get ready, they are almost here,” Kagome said standing, her
clothes changing into her black fighting clothes.
Oddly enough the shirt still went to just below the ribs, it
never repaired itself. Sesshomaru wasn’t happy that her midriff was exposed, but
he kept his mouth shut and focused on the forest in the direction he could feel
the enemy coming from. Kirara transformed into her larger form and everyone drew
their weapon. Kagome simply stood by Sesshomaru’s side holding the jewels.
“Aren’t you going to draw your weapons?” Sesshomaru
asked a concerned look on his face.
“I have to take care of Kagura and Kanna first,” she replied closing her hands so Naraku would not see the jewels.
The ground shook and hundreds of demons came out into the
clearing. The clearing was big enough
that they could see all of the army they were facing, Naraku
stayed back at the edge of the clearing, hiding behind the demons. Kagura emerged from
the forest on her feather, Kanna at her side. Kagome took a step forward and waved off the
others as they started to move with her.
“Miko, do you still plan to keep
your word?” Kagura asked looking down at Kagome.
“Of course.”
Kagome raised her hands above her head, opening her hands to
reveal the jewels. Everyone watched as
the jewels suddenly shot from her hands to strike Kagura
and Kanna in their chests. A bright light erupted and just as quickly as
it appeared, it was gone. Naraku stood behind his demons looking at Kagome in
shock. Kagura’s
eyes were wide as she felt the steady beat in her chest.
She almost started crying, she never thought that she would
feel her heart beating in her chest again.
She put her hand to her chest and smiled, happy for the first time in
her life. She was free,
Naraku could no longer control her. Then she looked over at Kanna
and her mouth dropped. Kanna stood beside her with a smile on her face, her skin
was no longer as pale as it had been.
Kanna smiled and threw her arms around her
sister. She had never felt anything like
this, there were so many emotions running through her. Then it clicked, all this time she had been
incomplete and she didn’t know it. Now
she felt, whole and it felt amazing. Kagura continued to watch her sister for a minute before
turning her attention to Kagome.
“Thank you, miko. You have freed us, but what did you do to Kanna?” she asked not realizing the barrier that Kagome had
put around them as Naraku tried to attack them.
“Naraku stole your heart. With Kanna he stole
her soul so he could control her. I
simply gave her soul back so she would be freed as well. Now I suggest you take Kanna
and flee, Naraku has been trying to kill you for the
last few minutes.”
Kagura froze then snapped around to see
that Naraku was indeed trying to kill them. However, the tentacles evaporated as they hit
an invisible force. How had she not
noticed that he had been attacking them?
She turned back to the group.
“Thank you again, Kagome.
You have freed us and we cannot thank you enough. Should you ever need our help in the future
just call. Good
luck to all of you,” she said kneeling back down and pulling Kanna to her as they flew away as fast as they could.
Naraku was furious as he watched Kagura and Kanna disappear. He turned his angry gaze to the group in the
clearing. The miko
would pay for this. He felt his anger
build as he realized that he could have attacked while they were busy talking
to Kagura and Kanna.
“Kill them!” he yelled to the demons before him.
All of the demons charged toward the group. Naraku stayed back
and watched still trying to figure out how the miko
had managed to free his two minions. Her
aura was still the same and yet she had somehow managed to get by him and get
the heart of Kagura and the soul of Kanna. He watched
furiously as the battle began. He would
figure it out later, but right now he had a war to fight.
“Don’t kill the miko. Incapacitate her, she’s mine!” he yelled
still hiding behind the demons.
He studied the group the miko had
gathered and was shocked when he noticed a third inuyoukai. He had never seen this demon before, but he
could feel the power coming off him. Who
was this mystery demon? He studied him
as he watched him fight his demons, dispatching of them with hardly any
effort. This demon was as strong as, if
not stronger than, Sesshomaru.
Kagome drew her sword and joined the others in battle. Sesshomaru stayed
by her side making sure she was guarded.
Most of the demons were low level demons and easily dispatched, but
there were so many that it made up for the lack of strength in numbers. Kagome looked around as she fought noticing
that everyone was already injured, but not seriously.
She took Sesshomaru’s hand and
without a word he grabbed her hand and spun with her causing her blade to arch
out and disintegrate the demons around them.
Sesshomaru then tossed her up into the air and
she used her swords attack to take down another group. Sesshomaru reached
out and caught her before she hit the ground, then spun her horizontally
letting go as she spun and attacked the demon in front of him.
She landed easily on her feet and continued to fight. Sesshomaru stood
back to back with her as they continued to fight. Inu no Taisho
watched his son and Kagome surprised at how well they fought together. They didn’t even need to talk to know what
the other was thinking. Sesshomaru suddenly ducked and Kagome swung her sword
around in a complete circle barely missing the top of his head.
He sprang back up and locked an arm through hers and flipped
her over his head just as a demon swung at the area she had been standing
in. Kagome split her sword in two and
jabbed them through the small space between Sesshomaru’s
arms and body, impaling and disintegrating two demons behind him. At the same time Sesshomaru
swung his sword in an arc behind her and decapitating a demon behind her.
Inuyasha yelled as he felt a claw swipe his
side. Kouga
sliced the demon in half then grabbed Inuyasha
pulling him closer. They stood back to
back attacking the seemingly never ending hordes of demons. Kouga screamed as a
demon bit into his thigh, he quickly reached down and ripped its head apart
with his claws. He didn’t have any time
to do anything about the wound though as the demons continued to attack.
Bankotsu and his group stood in a small
circle fighting with all their might.
The demons were slowly gaining ground.
All of them were injured in many places from bites and claws. Bankotsu did what
he could to keep his men safe, but they were slowly losing. Blood soaked the battlefield, most of it from
the demons, but a good portion from their group as well. Kouga’s wolf
buddies weren’t faring nearly as well as the rest.
Ginta had already fallen and Hakaku and Ayame were quickly
losing. Ayame
had pulled out all of her attacks and tricks, but her energy was fading
fast. Hakaku
was losing blood quickly and they knew it was only a matter of time before they
fell as well. Inu
no Taisho fought alone surprised that these pathetic demons had even managed to
get in one good swipe. He jumped back a
little and made sure nobody was in the way.
“Dragon Twister!” he yelled unleashing the attack.
The demons didn’t have time to move before the twister
engulfed them, leaving a trail blood and destruction in it’s wake. The
others started using their attack as well, there were
just too many demons. They continued to
strike while trying to conserve their energy.
Naraku watched the battle play out trying to
get an idea of what he was dealing with.
Today was the day that he would be rid of all of the annoying pests for
good.
Kagome heard the shouted attacks and began to look around as
she continued to fight. She noticed that
the wolves were almost dead, Inuyasha and Kouga were injured in many places and even Inu no Taisho was injured, but it was only a scrape. A single tear trailed down her cheek as she
looked at all her friends and family. At
this rate they would all die. There was
no way that she was going to let Naraku win.
She felt anger course through her as she watched Ayame fall. This had
to stop. Her family was in danger. Naraku was
responsible for the deaths of so many people including her friends. He had to be stopped,
she would not let him continue to kill innocent people. Her blood pounded in her ears drowning out
the sound of the battle, and she felt like it was boiling. She started to feel power coursing through
her stronger than she had ever felt.
“Enough!” she yelled so loud the ground seemed to shake.
A barrier surrounded her then shot out to cover the
battlefield, killing all of the demons except her friends. Everyone watched in shock as all the demons
disintegrated and Kagome floated up above them all. They could feel the power coming off her and
felt a chill run down their spines. This
power was stronger than it had ever been.
Kagome felt herself lift off the ground and
closed her eyes, listening to Midoriko.
After she understood
what was happening she opened her eyes which now glowed blue. Naraku still stood
at the edge of the forest, Kagome pulled the barrier back so that it only
surrounded her friends and family. She
could tell that Naraku was thinking about running and
put her hand out calling the Shikon jewel to
her. She knew Naraku
would not leave unless he had it.
Naraku felt a stinging pain in his chest
and cried out as the jewel shot out of his chest and flew to the miko. He grasped his
chest feeling the pain and anger flooding him.
He had worked hard, that jewel was his.
How had the miko become so powerful? Now he realized that she had been hiding her
full aura from him. But
for how long?
“That’s mine!” he yelled glaring at her.
“No it is mine. I am
the Shikon Miko and the
jewel is rightfully mine.”
Naraku’s glare quickly became surprise when
white wing appeared on her and her clothes changed from black battle attire to
white battle attire.
“Give it back to me now, or I will make your slave life with
me hell,” he yelled trying to sound confidant but failing miserably.
He heard the demons of her group growl at his words, but
stayed focused on Kagome.
“You want it? Come and
get it.”
Naraku was furious now,
he summoned the rest of his demons to attack and became even more enraged when
they disintegrated as they hit the barrier around the group. He didn’t like fighting his own battles, but
now he could either run and leave the jewel, or fight them. He smirked at the thought of finally killing
his enemies. All of his demons were useless, he was still much stronger than them even without
the jewel. This could be interesting.
“Very well miko, I will not
run. I will fight all of you, you don’t
stand a chance,” he said smirking.
He was still curious about why she had wings and the power
she possessed, but he pushed the thoughts aside to focus on the battle. There would be plenty of time to think about
that later when she was his slave.
“Now I think the battle is even because you are no longer
able to regenerate from everything,” Kagome said looking down upon the cowardly
hanyou.
“Why don’t we make a wager?” Naraku
asked smirking even more.
“What wager?” they all asked at the same time.
“If you win then I will end up dead or have to do anything
you command like a slave, but if you lose then you must become my slave for all
purposes, sex included and you will give me back the jewel.”
The whole group began to argue with the terms. They didn’t want to risk Kagome for any
matter. She had been through enough, she didn’t deserve to become a slave. No matter how unlikely it was that Naraku would win, they still didn’t want to take a
chance. Kagome knew they weren’t going
to be happy with the wager, but she had faith.
Trust me, I
have faith in all of you.
They all looked up when they heard her talk. Her lips didn’t move though as she continued
to talk to them.
He no longer has the jewel. He cannot regenerate the way he used to. We all need to attack together, just like you
practiced, that was the reason we tried it. Trust me we won’t lose, have faith in my
judgment.
They all looked at each other for a moment contemplating what
Kagome was asking.
You better be right koi, I don’t want to lose you.
I love you to Sesshomaru,
everything will be fine. Everyone attack
when I give the signal.
They all nodded still upset by the event that was about to
begin.
“So miko, do we have a deal?” Naraku asked looking back up to her.
