Kouga had separated himself from the group shortly after the three spies relayed their reports. He had been glad that they had returned unharmed and unnoticed, but the news of the suffering of his pack had proven to be worse than he had originally thought. The most heinous being the eradication of their innocents. Even in his wildest imaginings, he would have never guessed the snakes capable of something so…monstrous. He ignored the presence behind him, electing to remain immersed in his remorse for ever leaving his pack behind, for allowing this to happen, for being so damn selfish.
“Now is not the time for musing, wolf.” Sesshomaru coolly reprimanded from behind him. “Musing? More like self-loathing.” Kouga mumbled dejectedly, his eyes focused on the forest floor. “This Sesshomaru is not here to alleviate your turmoil, merely here to remind you that the sun rises.” Sesshomaru responded. Kouga stood from his seat on the ground and brushed the debris from his pelt. As much as he hated to admit it, the Taiyoukai was right. His inner turmoil could wait until after they took back his lands. He followed the demon Lord back to their camp. Kagome was prepared beyond anything he’d ever seen. Her patchwork bag was filled with supplies to help the injured, her quiver was full and her bow freshly strung. She had a katana strapped to her side like he did and she had changed into her training clothes. It made him proud that his mate was willing to go into battle, but he refused to allow her anywhere near the fighting. He walked past Shippo who had his various toys laid out on the ground and was meticulously stuffing his pockets to bursting with his tools of illusion. “I don’t want you going into battle with us, love.” Kouga said as he wrapped his arms around his mate’s waist. Kagome’s head shot up and she pulled out of Kouga’s embrace to look him in the face. “That’s not going to happen, Kouga. You need the numbers and I can help.” She replied sternly. “Kagome, you’ve done enough. We’ve set things in motion already and we’ll have numbers. The rest of the pack will rise to the occasion, trust me. I just don’t think I can bear it if you got hurt.” He responded while closing the gap between them, but Kagome took a step back, avoiding him. “I understand that, but they’re my family, too. I won’t just stay behind. You can’t ask this of me.” She said with disbelief. “I’m not asking, Kagome. You are my mate, my woman, and I say you stay here out of danger.” Kouga said becoming slightly annoyed with her defiance. “Alpha or not I’m going and that’s final.” She said while brushing past him and kneeling to help Shippo collect his toys. Kouga spun on his heels ready to confront his woman about this, but a clawed hand stopped him short of his goal. “You’re never goin’ to convince her to see it your way, ya know. I tried to get her to stay away from the fighting during the hunt for Naraku and the jewel shards. You know how well that worked out.” InuYasha told him perceptively. “Yeah, mutt, I do. She was always in danger.” Kouga replied gruffly shrugging the hanyou’s hand from his shoulder. “Maybe, but she is more resilient than you think. Look, Sesshomaru has spent the last few years training her…” “She was captured, beaten by these fuckers. She almost died. You weren’t there for that. I was. I’ll be damned if that’s going to happen again.” Kouga said cutting InuYasha off. “It is not your decision. The Miko wants to fight and this Sesshomaru agrees. She’s more than capable of taking care of herself on the battlefield. She’s bested this One many times and that, as you are aware, is a feat not easily accomplished.” Sesshomaru interjected. “They’re both right, Papa. If you don’t let Mama fight, she’ll just charge into battle anyway.” Shippo piped up from Kagome’s shoulder as they neared the small group. “If you let Kagome-sama fight with us, then we will be able to plan accordingly to keep her protected during the battle.” Kohaku said while strapping his own blade to his waist. “Let her fight, Kouga. She’s pack.” Natsuki threw in. Kouga hung his head in defeat and Kagome rushed him throwing her arms around his neck in triumph. She kissed him soundly and he returned her affections briefly before pulling away and holding her at arm’s length. He stared intently into the chocolate brown eyes of his woman, wanting her to absorb every word he was about to say. “Fine, you can go, but you are to stay with one of us at all times. Do you understand? It’s not that I doubt your abilities to defeat them; it’s just that even the rest of us are in danger. The snakes’ numbers are great and it will be all too easy to be overwhelmed. Be careful and know that I love you.” “I love you too, Kouga, and I promise to be careful.” Kagome said sweetly as she accepted Kouga’s embrace once again. “The sun is above the horizon. It is time.” Sesshomaru’s voice announced breaking the moment between the two lovers.Saburo raised his head and turned his blind eye toward the south to the approaching aura. It was oppressive, angry even, and had the snake’s clamoring over themselves trying to discern who the owner of the powerful youki was. Of course, Saburo knew, but he was inclined to keep that little piece of information to himself. There was a howl from the north, rallying the warriors into action. Their Alpha had arrived and with him came the vengeance from the West. Saburo wished he could actually see the terror that was transfixed across the faces of his captors. He could smell their fear easy enough, but he knew it was just the tip of the iceberg. ‘Just they wait and see.’ Saburo began to laugh. It was a sound broken and hoarse to his ears, but one of pure heartfelt joy. His fallen brethren will be avenged this day.
Hakkaku saw his chance the moment Ayame turned her back to listen to Kouga’s declaration. He sprang forward and slammed the female into the stone wall and pulled her head back roughly, digging his claws into her neck. “Move, bitch, and I’ll slit your throat.” He growled menacingly. Hakkaku looked toward the back of the den at the small battle ensuing. His pack mates that were free were busy dispatching the lives of their guards, while the others busied themselves in freeing the rest. The females took the task of gathering the injured into one area, taking Ginta further into the cave. The males handed the snake demon’s weapons to the females and instructed them to stand guard around the wounded, a task in which they all readily agreed. “What about this fucking traitor, Hakkaku? Are we going to kill her now?” One of the males asked him as he approached the center of the den, dragging Ayame with him. “No, Kouga has sent word that her life belongs to him.” Hakkaku replied. “You see, even Kouga understands….” Ayame began, but was cut off by a slap that reverberated off the walls of the cave. “You will hold your tongue, whore, or we’ll cut it out!” One of the females screamed. “String her up by her hands and gag her. You, you, and you come with me. We need to find out what’s going on outside. You two see if Keiji is still in Kouga’s den.” Hakkaku commanded. Hakkaku and his three comrades snuck through the falls and grabbed the four guards stationed outside the den, pulling them back behind the watery curtain. There was the sound of flesh tearing and bones popping as they ripped their throats out and snapped their necks silently killing them so as not to arouse any unwanted attention. The two he had sent to scout the snake leader’s position ran up to him, their eyes wide with worry. “He’s not in there, Hakkaku. He must have left through the other exit.” One of the young males announced. “Fair enough. Kouga hasn’t shown himself yet, so we must wait. Grab their weapons and prepare yourselves. Today we spill blood in the name of the ones who have fallen.” Hakkaku ordered. There was a round of silent agreement as the others steeled their resolve and anxiously awaited their moment to exact their revenge.
Kaito sprang into action the moment his Alpha’s message rang through the quiet of the morning. He cut the binds of his two pack mates beside him and left the dagger with his brother, Isamu, to free the rest. He lunged for one of the guard’s swords and impaled the snake before he had time to react. The others in his group were on their feet and in action instantly, fending off their attackers. “Get them under control!” One of the snakes bellowed in the clearing. Others began to spring forth from their captivity and attack their own guards. There were growls and howls of pain as his brethren were injured in their attempts, but not one stood down or gave up the assault. Kaito caught a glimpse of Hiroshi backing up from the foray. There was no way he was going to allow the fucking coward to escape. Kaito forced his claws into the chest of the charging demon before him and crushed the bastard’s heart. “Isamu, grab him! Kouga wants him alive!” He yelled to his brother over the noise of the fighting. “Consider it done, brother!” Isamu yelled back before he slashed the throat of his opponent and made his way to Hiroshi, weaving expertly through the chaos. Kaito focused his attention back on the snakes that were charging their group and dropped to one knee, kicking one of them in the groin and lashing out his claws at the other, ripping a gash above his knee. He watched them both fall to the ground and dispatched their lives quickly, before moving on. He caught a glimpse of something red and billowing white racing toward them. It took him a moment to register what, or rather, who it was. “Fall back! Everyone cease and desist! Fall back!” He yelled to his pack mates as the figure bounded closer. The wolves pushed away from their enemies just in time to hear “Wind Scar” being yelled above the shouts of the irate snakes. The ground quaked and a bright light had them shielding their eyes. The screams of their adversaries were heard above the roar of the attack, leaving the field eerily silent once the light faded. “Oi, there’s no time to waste ya mangy wolves!” The hanyou shouted to the group, eliciting a round of yips and barks of agreement as they launched another attack on a group of snakes that had gotten clear from the blast. Isamu returned with an unconscious Hiroshi slung carelessly over his shoulder. He waited until he reached his brother before he dropped the traitor unceremoniously on the ground at his feet. “I’ll tie him up here and release the underlings.” Isamu said while joining Kaito in watching the dog eared hanyou assist their pack mates in taking down their enemies. “Sounds fair. Tell the underlings to guard him, and then meet us on the field.” Kaito replied as he clapped his brother on the back and raced off to join the battle.
“Oh, Kami, Saburo! Help me get him down!” Kagome yelled to the recently released Elders. Elder Tsunenaga was the first to bolt into action, followed by Elder Kamatari. They placed their arms around Saburo, causing him to hiss in pain, but unfortunately, due to his injuries, it couldn’t be helped. “Alright, Shippo baby, cut him loose.” Kagome said. “’Kay, Mama.” Shippo answered from the tree limb as he sliced through the ropes binding the wolf Beta’s hands. Saburo’s arms fell limply around the necks of his Elders and he yelped in pain as they supported his weight between themselves. “Where should we take him, Miko?” Tsunenaga asked as he lifted one of the injured wolf’s legs. “Take him to the common den and lay him flat.” She answered as she placed a kiss on Saburo’s forehead. They both nodded their affirmation and made their way through the waterfall. Kagome felt the ground shake under her feet and watched as the remaining Elders dropped into a defensive crouch. She watched as clawed hands and scaled heads began to emerge from the ground below the elevated rocks she was standing on. She notched an arrow and infused it with her purification power, letting it fly. Her target sizzled into nonexistence as she notched another, letting it loose with the same result. She kept her eyes trained on the ground below as more demons clawed their way to the surface and cursed her humanity. She was shooting reiki infused arrows as fast as she could, hitting her mark every time, but still she wasn’t fast enough. Shippo yelled “Spinning Top” as he launched the toy at the group of snakes pulling themselves from the earth. The top expanded on their heads spinning on a tight circle flattening them under the weight, buying Kagome a little more time to shoot off her remaining arrows. “Shippo, I’m out!” She yelled as she unsheathed her katana. She looked to her left where the Elders remained and nodded to them as she leapt from the low cliff to the field below. She rolled on her knees and found her footing in time to push her blade through the chest of an oncoming snake. She pushed him off with her foot and used the momentum to bring her blade down on the arm of a demon attempting to extract himself from his hole. He screamed in pain and she impaled his head to silence him and end his suffering. There were two blurs that surrounded her as she fought. Auburn, white, and black merged into azure as Matsusuke and Yorozohu assisted her in the fight. She continued to swing her blade and used her size to avoid the attacks of the reflexively superior youkai, weaving in and out of the numerous snake demons, landing blows wherever she could. She focused her power to one hand as a snake broke through the Elders’ defense and lunged for her. She felt pain explode in her side when she wasn’t able to dodge the attack in time and laid her hand on the chest of the serpent. He erupted in pink flames, his eyes bulged and his mouth twisted in a silent scream as he was burned from the inside out. She fell to her knees and grabbed her side with her free hand. She felt the warmth of her blood seeping through her fingers and mentally kicked herself for getting injured so quickly. “Staff of Two Heads!” Jaken yelled as an approaching snake was ignited in flames beside her. The demon flailed its arms in an attempt to extinguish the flames, but only succeeded in causing them to grow with each erratic movement he made. There was a crack and sizzle as a green whip effectively silenced the panicked snake. Kagome supported her weight on her katana and pushed to stand, but fell into a sea of billowing white. “You are injured, Miko.” Sesshomaru commented as he held her aloft by her shoulders. “I’m fine. I can still fight.” Kagome replied stubbornly. “Hn. What do you need me to do?” Sesshomaru asked causing Kagome to look at him in bafflement. “I need a tourniquet for my wound. That should be enough for the moment.” She finally answered when the demon Lord quirked an eyebrow at her. Sesshomaru made short work of one of his sleeves and knelt before the young priestess, summoning his venom into his claws. “This will hurt, but should seal the cuts.” He said as he dripped a small amount of poison onto her wounds cauterizing them. Kagome bit her lip against a cry that threatened to break forth and grasped onto Sesshomaru’s shoulders as he began to tie the silk around her waist. “Thank you.” She said as he stood to his regal height before her. “Stay with me, Miko. Kit, take your mother’s pack into the den and assist the injured. Jaken protect the Miko’s son.” He ordered. “Yes, Milord.” Jaken squawked bowing to the ground. “But Mama’s injured. She needs me!” Shippo cried as tears welled in his eyes. “I’m fine now, baby. Saburo needs you more. I love you, Shippo. Now go.” Kagome said softly as she hugged her son to her chest. She watched as he bounded off with the green kappa to the den, dragging her backpack behind them. The Elders made short work of the serpents, ripping their claws through their scaled opponents like knives through butter. Kagome took the moment to silently appreciate the elegance in which they fought. They worked in tandem, many centuries of familiarity working to their upmost advantage. A sudden howl from the common den drew her attention as she watched a rabble of wolves spring through the falls with Hakkaku in the lead and Natsuki with Kohaku clamped to her back running at his side. She watched them race to join their brothers on the battlefield several yards away. Kohaku jumped from Natsuki’s back and threw his sling blade, embedding it into the neck of one of the snakes and yanked him onto his back as his neck gushed crimson from the wound. The others clashed with the outer rim of the hoard, gnashing their teeth and using their claws on any vulnerable body part they could find. There were roars of pain erupting from their opponents, but the small pack held their ground, closing the gap when one of their own fell. The assault was one born of desperation, emotions running high and vengeance embedded into the forefront of their minds, the memories of their dead fresh in their thoughts. Kagome could not stay stationary any longer. There was still much work to be done. She turned her attention back to Sesshomaru who raised his arm, an offering for her to bring herself close. She held tight to his armor as he lifted them into the sky on his cloud. She caught a glimpse of Kouga in the thick of the crowd, his hair had fallen from its tie and whipped around him in onyx wisps as he pivoted and spun, landing strike after strike, his fangs bared and a dangerous glint reflecting from his eyes. He fought like a wolf possessed and it stole her breath. He was a blood spattered god, deadly and untouchable. How could she have gotten so lucky to be the mate of one so beautiful? InuYasha was not far from him, swinging Tetsusaiga in wide arches gutting any snake in his path. Kagome was glad that InuYasha had been able to put his animosity toward Kouga behind him. They always had worked well together and it stilled some of the worry in her heart to know her beloved was being protected by her most trusted friend. Sesshomaru set them down moments later. She was rushed from the right and crouched low, pushing her blade through the knee of her first assailant. He screeched in pain and as she extracted her blade, she raised it in one smooth movement, slashing across his stomach, spilling his guts. He was dead before he hit the ground. She looked back at Sesshomaru who gave her a nod of approval before he drew Bakusaiga. There were too many wolves mixed in with the snakes surrounding them for Sesshomaru to do more than just use his sword’s cutting edge. His special attacks would have to wait. Kagome stayed close to the Taiyoukai, using her training and kept a sharp eye on the snakes closing in on her position. They thought her weak being the ningen she was, well, she would just have to show them. She was the Alpha female of this pack after all and the guardian of the Shikon No Tama. She raced forward, using her blade to deflect the claws of the offending reptile, keeping him busy while she waited for another to close in on her from the opposite side. They drew their claws back poised to strike. She saw them descend upon her and somersaulted backwards letting them kill each other with their own momentum. She found her footing with a self-satisfied smirk on her face and continued her attack. She pushed her blade through countless enemies, feeling their dark souls leave their bodies. Her legs ached from the amount of dodging she had to do and the muscles in her arms burned, but she persevered. She landed a solid kick to the jaw of another and watched the snake’s eyes cloud in anger, but he never got his chance to react because her sword had found its mark, slicing the meaty girth under his chin. She heard the clatter of chains and saw Kohaku’s sling blade whiz past her head. She turned around wide eyed at the demon behind her with the weapon buried in his skull, his arms hanging limply by his side before he fell to his knees and then onto his face. She turned back to her friend and mouthed a silent ‘thank you.’ The boy nodded his head in reply and ran off searching for new foes just as she did.
Kouga caught the scent of Kagome’s blood the second she flew into the fray with Sesshomaru. She looked to be fine and well-guarded so he continued on his warpath. The bodies fell before him like sheaves of wheat before the scythe, but still there was no trace of the snake clan’s leader. He spotted a group of serpents not far from his position and launched himself in the air. He descended upon them with a snarl and used the force of the impact to sever the heads of two of them with his claws. He round housed the next, hearing his vertebrae snap upon impact and sunk his gore covered claws into the chest of another, eliciting a roar from the injured snake. The demon’s roar turned into gurgles as InuYasha pushed his fang into his chest from behind. Kouga pulled his claws back watching the snake fall to his knees. “Quit feelin’ them up, fleabag and just kill ‘em already.” InuYasha stated with a smirk. “Fuck you, mutt.” Kouga responded with a chuckle. “Not my type. On your left.” InuYasha responded. Kouga twisted and took a punch to the face before retaliating by kicking the legs out from under his opponent and stomping on the snake’s neck, killing him instantly. He turned to see InuYasha flying through the air several yards away descending upon another group and noticed the scent of his own brethren’s newly spilt blood coursing through the air in the opposite direction. There were howls of rage that were cut short followed by more of the coppery scent. Kouga pushed forward, but was interrupted by a conglomerate of youkai crowding his path. He ripped through the scaled hides of the snakes as he made his way slowly forward to the aid of his comrades. He could no longer see his brethren or the flamboyant red of mutt face’s clothing. He was alone in this battle and he lashed out, completely determined to send them all to the afterlife. He would not be kept from his kin. They would all pay for this outrage. He snarled viciously as he sunk his claws into the neck of a serpent to his left and pushed off the ground to wrap his legs around the neck of another, pulling the snake forward as Kouga’s hands made purchase with the ground, using his abundant leg strength to sling the reptile into the group after snapping his neck. His scaly brothers lifted their arms to catch his corpse, and were knocked back by the force of the impact. Kouga took advantage of their momentary distraction and summoned Goriashi. It took no less than three strikes from his ancestral claw to dispatch all their lives, leaving them huddled together in a mass of guts and gore. Kouga failed to notice the shadow approaching him. He was blindsided by the burning pain of poisoned claws ripping down his back. He heard his armor splinter and felt it fall away from his torso, clattering to the ground at his feet. He fell forward, bracing his body’s weight onto his hands and waited for the youkai to get closer, ignoring the pain in his flesh. It approached him with arrogant strides giving away the identity of this new antagonist. ‘So, Keiji has finally decided to show himself.’ Kouga sneered and kicked his legs up behind him connecting with the snake leader’s face. He used the momentum of the strike to flip backwards and land in a crouch facing the bulky youkai. Keiji rubbed his jaw idly with a wicked smirk. “There issss no need to be sssso crossss, wolf Princccce. I only did to your kin what you’ve done to mine. Blood for blood, assss it were.” The snake clan leader hissed above him. “You deem this fair, you bastard?! You had no right to be on my land! You bellydraggin’ fuckheads butchered my pack, our young! There will be no mercy, may the Kami spit upon your shriveled heart after I rip it from your soulless body!” Kouga bellowed. He rose to his feet quickly, claws digging into the earth bellow him, giving him traction to push forward at a speed he’d never felt on his own without the assistance from the jewel shards. Keiji snarled at his approach and shot his bloodied claws out trying to ensnare the rushing wolf. Kouga spun to his left and landed a swift kick to the back of the snake’s knee, making it buckle. He skidded to a halt, carving a ditch in the grass beneath his feet and lunged at the massive youkai from behind. Keiji was faster than he looked and rolled to the right, bringing a fist up to connect with Kouga’s ribs. The air rushed from his lungs as the Prince landed harshly in the dirt. Kouga pushed up on his hands but before he could get his feet under him, the snake leader grabbed a fist full of his hair and yanked him up, clamping another meaty hand down on his shoulder, his claws biting into his flesh. Kouga fought the urge to whimper and remained strong, the skin on his back burned and ripped under the strain, but he stared the snake down regardless of his vulnerable position, as his feet dangled uselessly, hovering above the ground. Kouga kicked his legs out, but they connected with nothing but empty air. Keiji sneered and pulled Kouga forward, sinking his jagged teeth into the flesh of his bare shoulder, piercing to the bone. The pain from the bite alone was excruciating, but the venom being pumped into his body had him howling in pain, his earlier resolve shattering into a million pieces. He was barely aware of his surroundings when he was dropped to his knees, but he still fought the haze as others came into his blurred vision.
Kagome took a moment to survey her surroundings after she felled the last snake in her proximity. She smiled at what she saw. The wolves were now the majority, taking the lives of the snake youkai easily. There were cheers erupting around her as they gained victory and she sheathed her katana. She was ready to add her voice to the whoops and cries of joy when an anguished howl ripped through the celebratory cries made by the pack. She swiveled her head in the direction of the heartbreaking sound and found Kouga on his knees before a huge snake demon, blood dripping from large gashes in his back, his armor nowhere to be seen, and his shoulder covered in a ghastly purple and crimson. Her heart dropped into her stomach and bile rose into her throat as she ran to her beloved’s aid. She was running as fast as her legs would carry her, but a small inner voice told her she wouldn’t reach him in time. He was clear across the field and he was being surrounded by a growing crowd oflesser snake demons, blocking her view of him. She heard InuYasha yell ‘Blades of Blood’ before she saw his red clad figure crash into the group of youkai, toppling them. Still she ran, closing the distance between them as InuYasha fought for his life, outnumbered, raining down blow after blow and taking as much damage as he was giving. She saw Kouga lunge forward, only to be thrown back by a well-placed punch from one of the larger demons that emerged from behind the snake clan leader. She felt the scream of rage rising from her aching lungs before she actually heard it with her own ears. There was a rush of wind from behind her that blew her long hair out in front of her face even as she ran full steam ahead. She felt an arm encircle her waist and heave her off her feet. She fought her captor the best she could with all her human strength. She felt two hands grasp her arms from her other side and hold her in place. “Please, Lady Kagome, be calm.” A kind voice pleaded. “The Lord of the West is assisting your mate and friend. Please, we can’t allow you to come to any harm. His orders.” Another said softly. She felt the arm and hands recede from her person when she stilled and saw that what the two wolves had said to be the truth. Sesshomaru had a frothy mix of green poison and sizzling blood dripping from his claws as he hacked away at his brother’s enemies. InuYasha had righted himself and was assisting Kouga in fighting the three overly large guards keeping them from the snake clan leader. They had InuYasha and Kouga surrounded in close quarters, not allowing them much room to maneuver or for the use of Tetsusaiga. The Leader took cheap shots at the pair whenever he was presented an opportunity. Kagome’s lungs began to burn with the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. A crowd of survivors had assembled behind her to watch the final battle. There were gasps and cheers depending on the turn of events. InuYasha and Kouga were holding their own as Sesshomaru ridded the land of the remaining lower serpents. Kouga landed a particularly impressive hit on one of the guards and Kagome watched as her mate brought the large snake to his knees while the reptile clawed futily at his gushing throat. She almost jumped for joy until the leader launched himself at Kouga, who had his back turned, and tackled him to the ground. Her legs were moving again and she ignored the garbled pleas of the two who had stopped her before. She had no choice but to watch as Keiji pounded Kouga into the grass with his clawed mitts. She heard the sickening sound of every impact upon her Prince and she couldn’t stop the tears that blurred her vision. Their forms were reduced to a looming mass over a smaller figure being beat into an unnatural indention in the sea of green below them. She heard a crack of a whip and saw the blurred line of Lord Sesshomaru’s poison whip lash out and rip through the side of the snake leader. The pained roar was deafening, but did nothing to stop her pace. If anything it gave her a reason to push harder. She saw Keiji lift his clawed hand above his head and suddenly she became aware of the pair of demons running beside her. “Throw me!” She screamed frantically. “What?!” They both yelled back in unison. “He’s going to kill him! Throw me!” She screamed louder.
Sesshomaru heard Kagome’s shrieking orders and looked up in time to see the tiny human woman flying through the air heading directly for Keiji. Streaks of pink reiki began to fly from her airborne form and Sesshomaru leapt into action. He grabbed his stubborn half-brother by his fire rat haori, ignoring his weak struggles and ran at lightning speed to the ookami Prince. He was able to get a fist full of hair in his grasp as Kagome descended upon them. Her purification powers danced across his skin causing it to burn with an intensity he never thought possible. He pushed off the ground with all his might, launching himself and his two comrades into the sky. He formed his ball of light at the very moment Kagome made contact with the snake leader. He felt the explosion of power licking at his heels as he sped away to safety. The Miko had destroyed the last of the enemies on the field of battle and Sesshomaru felt an exuberant amount of pride at her actions, but his chest was clenching in a way he had only felt in the underworld when he was unable to revive Rin. The emotion of, dare he say, fear gripped him as he touched down beside the group of survivors. Fear for the life of his daughter. Kouga’s unconscious form was taken from him by two ookami males and InuYasha shrugged his way out of his haori, escaping his grasp. “Kagome! Kagome!” He screamed frantically, bounding forward in search of his friend, not waiting for the purification powers to recede. Sesshomaru followed his brother into the pink field and forced his youki out around them both, protecting them from the reiki that threatened their very lives. They closed the distance quickly, finding the young woman barely conscious, her leg and both arms were bent at awkward angles, blood dribbled from her parted lips, and her chest heaved erratically. Sesshomaru could hear the fluid rattling in her lungs, her sluggish heartbeat and knew that she was in a bad way. InuYasha reached her first, kneeling beside her and placing a shaking clawed hand on her blood matted hair. “Kagome, hey, it’s over. They’re gone. You can rest now.” InuYasha said softly as his voice cracked under the strain of his emotions. “’Y-Yasha…K-Koug…” Kagome asked brokenly, her words cut off by weak coughing as more blood spilled from her mouth. Sesshomaru smelled the bitterness of his brother’s tears and fell to his knees beside him, smoothing a cool palm across the young woman’s face, wiping the blood from her chin with his thumb. “Hush now, Miko. He will live. You’ve done well, child.” He said allowing a small, sad smile to break through his usual mask of indifference. Kagome’s face split into one of her soul shattering smiles as her eyes closed and her face relaxed into serenity.
A/N: I know what you're thinking. 'Kagome's nuts!', right? or maybe something along the lines of 'Why?!' Don't worry the stories not over yet. You'll just have to wait and see!
