Kagome tasted blood as a particularly painful contraction hit her. They had to be less than five minutes apart now. She was running out of time. She pushed herself to her feet, but it didn’t last long and she slipped back down to the floor. She wrapped her arms around her middle and started to cry. She had never felt so helpless before. If only she had been able to touch her power she could have at least taken comfort in its warmth.
She stifled her tears as she heard a commotion just outside the door. She shook her head, it was too soon. They couldn’t be coming to check on her now. The door exploded inward and she curled up to protect her belly from the flying debris. She could hear shouts in the hall and suddenly a familiar face appeared.
She almost couldn’t believe it. “Shiori-chan?”
The bat hanyou smiled. “I got her!” She hurried over to Kagome. “Come on miko-sama, we have to get you out of here. Can you stand?”
Kagome squeezed her eyes shut and tried to breathe through the contraction. Once it was over she nodded. If it meant getting her baby out of here she would crawl if she had to. Shiori helped her to her feet and it was a good thing she was hanyou because Kagome was forced to lean on her heavily.
Another contraction came and she put her hand on the wall and sobbed. “InuYasha.”
Shiori rubbed her back gently. “He’s here miko-sama. He’s clearing us a path. Naraku has many followers all knowing that your escape means their death. Help is on the way, but until it arrives Inu-onii-chan and the houshi-sama are all we have.”
Kagome nodded and let Shiori help her down the stairs. It was slow going, but they finally reached the ground floor. The female hanyou shielded her with her own body as a youkai came flying towards them though the wall. She looked around the other woman to see her InuYasha covered in blood, a trace of youkai markings appearing on his cheeks.
“Get her the hell out of here,” he snarled as he spun, catching a serpent youkai as it thought to attack him back. He tore its head from its body and flung it away.
“Come on miko-sama, a little further now,” Shiori said.
“Inu-onii-chan won’t fight as well if he is worried about your safety.”
They stepped outside and found that the world was in chaos. People fled screaming as lesser youkai swarmed the street. Shiori dragged her through the abandoned cars. She clutched at her stomach and cried out as water ran down her legs.
“I can’t, I can’t,” she cried. “The baby is coming now.”
“Just a little farther,” Shiori insisted. “We have to get you out of the open.”
Kagome knew she was right and nodded. She let Shiroi pull her along and up onto the sidewalk. The door to the small store was locked but Shirou pulled it open and helped her inside. Kagome sank down onto the floor. The hanyou pulled off her jacket and rolled it up so that she could use it as a pillow.
“All right, miko-sama, shall we see how close we are to meeting your children?” Shiori asked.
Kagome gasped. “More than one?”
“That’s right,” Shiori replied as she raised her skirt up past her knees
Kagome tried to help as best she could as the other woman slid off her underwear. She gripped the back of her thighs as she pulled her knees up. “What do you see?”
“Nothing yet, but I doubt it will be long now,” Shiori replied.
Both women screamed as the front window shattered. Kagome watched as Shiori went to her backpack. She pulled out a towel and spread it out on the ground between Kagome’s legs and then a large round orb. She put her hand on the top and the bottom of the dark red ball and a barrier sprang to life around them. She then set it carefully on the ground beside her making sure not to lose contact with it.
Kagome panted her contractions were almost constant now and the pressure between her legs was nearly unbearable as was the urge to push. “I can’t, I can’t,” she sobbed.
“Okay, miko-sama, I see the head,” Shiori told her. “You’re almost done. A few more big pushes, okay?”
“Okay,” Kagome managed through her tears. She screamed as she pushed hard.
“Good,” Shiori said with a smile. “It looks like your son is coming. His head is out and he has Inu-onii-chan’s ears. He’s so beautiful. Just one more big push and you can see him too.”
Kagome screamed again and pushed and then suddenly all the pressure and the pain was gone. Her legs were shaking and her heart ached as seconds of silence passed. Then she heard it a little cough followed by a soft cry. She lifted her head to see Shiori wiping his face and then to her great joy the bat hanyou placed the baby on her chest and draped a blanket over them both.
His eyes were unfocused as he looked at her and she smiled. He was perfect. Her brow furrowed as she noticed that he was clutching something in his tiny hand, but she didn’t have time worry about that as another contraction gripped her and Shiori swore.
“Shit,” Shiori said quietly.
“What is it?” Kagome asked.
“You’re bleeding miko-sama,” the other woman replied. “Life’s blood, not woman’s blood. We have to hurry and finish this so I can find help. I don’t know what to do. He must have torn something inside you on the way out. I didn’t see this I swear.”
Kagome cried out again and pushed as her body demanded. The pressure was building again and it was just as unbearable as before. She panted and then squeezed her eyes shut again.
“I see her head,” Shiroi announced. “Sorry, miko-sama, no puppy ears on this one.”
Kagome laughed a little though it turned into a sob. She was already starting to feel weak and cold and she could tell she was losing too much blood by the heat that was spreading beneath her. She didn’t want to die, not now. Her babies needed her and so did InuYasha. She couldn’t give up.
“One more big push,” Shiroi told her. “You can do it Miko-sama.”
Kagome blacked out for a second and when she returned to consciousness Shiori was there laying her daughter next to her son and her chest. She tried to lift her arm to touch her, but she was too weak to manage.
“Miroku,” Kagome said forcing herself not to panic. “He doesn’t have my talent but he should be able to help.”
“I can’t leave you,” she said.
“We’ll be okay as long as you hurry,” Kagome said.
Shiori looked conflicted but nodded and the barrier fell. If the street had been in chaos before now it was a war zone. Miroku and InuYasha were in the middle of it all, directing youkai and spiritual humans in the attack against all the lesser demons. She ducked as some sort of nasty insect youkai flew over her head.
“Houshi-sama, you must come quickly,” she called.
Miroku glanced towards her and InuYasha cut down a youkai that tried to exploit his distraction. He spared a quick thanks to InuYasha and then made a run for the bat hanyou. She pulled him into a small shop. His eyes found Kagome who was pale and drifting in and out of consciousness.
“She’s bleeding inside,” Shiori told him.
He hurried over to her and laid his hands on her abdomen. He prayed to anyone that might be listening that they might guide his gift so that he would be able to heal her. Relief filled him as he realized that it was a clean tear in the wall of her uterus. He pretended it was nothing more than mending a small cut, something he had done countless times and her bleeding slowed.”
“She really needs a hospital but we cannot risk that,” Miroku said. “We must get her back to the shrine where she will be untouchable and I can get a physician to come to her there to administer fluids and a transfusion if necessary.”
They both looked up as the door flew open and InuYasha appeared. He was beside Kagome in a blink. He cupped her face with one hand and she managed a weak smile. “Kagome.”
“Two of them,” she murmured. “Love you.”
“Inu-onii-chan, has the flow of life blood stopped?” Shiori asked. “I can’t tell.”
“Move that towel away from her,” he said, not taking his eyes off her face. Shiori gathered up the soaked towel and stuffed it in her bag. InuYasha sniffed a few times.
“Yeah, it’s just woman’s blood now.”
“InuYasha, we need to get her and the babies out of here,” Miroku said gently. “We have to get them to the shrine.”
After a long moment InuYasha nodded. “Sesshomaru is here now. I can get her back there on my own. Shiori make your way to the shrine as fast as you can, but I can’t wait for you, so be careful. I owe you, Bouzo, a debt I intend to repay so stay alive out there.”
“You can count on that,” Miroku said. “I will go out first and make sure it is clear for Shiori to make her escape. I will remain close to keep the path open for you before I return to the fray.”
The two headed for the door and InuYasha bit his wrist. He lifted her head with one hand behind her neck and put his wrist to her lips praying that it would work and that her powers wouldn’t reject the youki in his blood. He needed her to be able to hold onto their babies. She started to stir and lifted her into his arms. He smiled as the first thing she did was to curl one arm protectively around their children.
She blinked as tears filled her eyes at the sight of him. “InuYasha.”
“I’m going to take you home. Are you strong enough to hold onto them while I carry you?” he asked.
Kagome nodded and wrapped both arms around their children as he lifted her all the way into his arms and stood. He carried her to the door and opened it slowly. Miroku nodded to him that it was safe and he took off with a great leap. He ran as fast as he could, making sure to keep an eye on Kagome and their babies just in case she lost consciousness again. He didn’t slow down until they were safely within the protective area of the shrine. He carried Kagome up to her room.
“Bathroom, please,” she said quietly.
He set her carefully on the closed toilet and then knelt in front of her. “Just tell me what you need me to do.”
“I-I-I don’t know,” she said at last as she started to tremble. “I didn’t have a chance to get anything ready.”
InuYasha growled softly and wrapped his arms around her. “I’ve got you now. It’s going to be okay. Whatever you need I’ll make it happen. Shit, please don’t cry. I am trying really hard to keep my shit together but I need you to help me too by being strong for me, just a little longer, okay?”
Slowly her breathing returned to normal. “Okay.”
He sat back. “Now, you might not have had time to get anything for the baby, but I have. All I’ve had is fucking time since that bastard took you and I had to hold onto the hope that I was going to get both of you back. Buying stuff for him, helped with that. Of course I didn’t expect there to be two.”
She smiled a little. “Did you get something we could put them in, so that I could maybe take a quick shower?”
“Don’t move,” he told her.
He left and while he was gone she pried the small round stone out of his grasp. She placed it in the jewelry box on the bathroom counter. She would worry about that later. InuYasha returned with a wooden cradle. She ran her hands over a carving of the Goshinboku and smiled. She recognized the youki that had been invested into the wood. “You did this. It’s beautiful.”
She offered him first their son and he held him to his chest for a long moment before setting him gently in the cradle. He did the same with their daughter glad that there was plenty of room for both of them right now. He came over to her and helped her out of her dirty clothes and then over to the small shower stool. She turned on the water and he took care of the dirty clothes and wiped down the toilet seat. She watched as he grabbed a towel and disappeared back into the bedroom before returning with some pajamas and underwear for her. She gave him a grateful smile as he helped her dry off.
He reached up and touched the beads and bones around her neck. “What’s this?”
She grabbed them. “He cut me off from my power. I can’t take them off. I must have tried a hundred times. Can you, can you see if you can get it off me?” He took hold of the strand and pulled. It fell apart and scattered all over the bathroom floor. Kagome gave a joyful cry and the warmth and light of her power was once again within her reach. She threw her arms around him. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied. “I’ll step out so you can finish getting dressed.”
He gave her a moment of privacy to too see to the call of nature and other things and returned to carry her over to the bed. Once she was settled, he brought the cradle out to her bedside. She held out her arms and he gave her their pups. He moved around the bed to sit beside her as she unbuttoned her pajama top. He held the material out of the way for her and then helped her to get them latched on for the first time one on each side.
Their son didn’t have any trouble figuring out what do and Kagome laughed. “He has his father’s appetite, and his ears.” Her eyes fell on their daughter. “She doesn’t have any youki at all. She’s human, miko, I can feel her reiki now that I can touch my powers again. How is that possible?”
“My mother was human,” he said. “Maybe that’s what she got from me, while he got what came from my father.”
Their little girl opened her eyes and looked at them. Kagome gasped, at finding them a deep violet, nearly black. “She has your eyes, how they look when you’re human.”
“Keh, he has yours, or didn’t you notice that woman?” he asked with an affectionate smile as he ran his thumb across her cheek. “Shit, Kagome they’re both perfect.”
“They are, aren’t they?” she replied with a soft smile. “Thank you for coming for us.”
“I’ll always come for you, all of you,” he assured her.
They both looked up as someone knocked lightly on the door. “Knock, knock. I hope you don’t mind that I let myself in.”
“Come in,” Kagome called.
Shiori smiled at them as she came into the room. “I didn’t mean to barge in, but Inu-onii-chan told me to meet him here.”
Kagome just shook her head. “The woman who helped deliver my babies should consider herself welcomed as family into my home.”
Shiori approached the bed slowly knowing that InuYasha would be on edge and very protective of his mate and children especially after all that had happened. She was fully prepared to accept it if he warned her off.
“It’s okay,” he said seeing her caution. “I trusted you with them once today and you didn’t let me down.”
She smiled and sat at the foot of the bed. “So is there anything I can do to help out? I could make you some food, or whatever. Just name it.”
“I don’t know,” Kagome replied. “They could both do with a sponge bath and a diaper, I think, before we get them dressed.”
“Last door on the right,” InuYasha told her. “I put all the baby stuff in there. Good thing I went gender neutral I guess.” Shiori left them to get what they needed for the pups and InuYasha reached over to touch each tiny cheek with one of his knuckles. “Can I hold her for a minute?”
“Oh, of course you can,” she said passing their daughter into his arms. “I’m sorry.”
He shook his head. “Don’t be sorry. You’re their mother. Of course you want to keep them close, especially after what you went through.”
She put a hand over his. “You went through it too.”
Shiori returned with a small plastic tub of warm water balanced on one hand the other items Kagome had asked for in the other. InuYasha rocked their little girl while Kagome set their son on the towel spread out between her legs. Shiori pulled up a chair and held the water on her lap so that Kagome could dip the rag in it. As she wiped him down he squirmed and a tiny growl escaped him.
Shiori laughed. “Oh, he’s you all over, Inu-onii-chan.”
Kagome giggled and put on his diaper. She got him into a sleeper and then held him against her chest so that he could settle back into sleep. While she did that InuYasha cleaned their daughter carefully and then diapered and dressed her as well. She couldn’t keep from smiling as she watched him cradle their little girl tenderly against him.
“Is there any news?” InuYasha asked as he rocked her ever so slightly.
“Only that the situation has been contained,” she replied. “All of the lesser youkai have been taken care of and they are now focusing on helping the injured and finding out what happened. Some bitch miko tried to declare the truce invalid saying that she was the great miko now since you were probably dead, but the houshi-sama shut her right down. He told everyone that he had seen you alive with his own eyes and that you were already on your way back to the shrine.”
“That had to be Kikyou,” Kagome said. “She was one of my biggest detractors and one of the few with enough power to try and lay claim to the title.”
“Keh, speaking of Kikyou, we found it,” he told her. “I found proof that it wasn’t Kikyou or InuYasha who broke the treaty. The same bastard that took you is the one who started it all. He was human thief who gave his soul up to become part youkai.”
“You’re sure?” she asked.
He nodded. “Kikyou’s daughter wrote it all down. It was how I found you. Shiori used the scroll to get a vision. It was the connection she needed. The bouzo catalogued it and I already told Sesshomaru.”
“It just seems so unbelievable,” Kagome said quietly. “I guess it explains why he wanted our baby though. He probably saw it as some sort of twisted way to further punish the InuYasha of legend.” She kissed their son’s forehead. “He’ll never get you my sweet pup, I swear. You or your sister.”
“Damn right he won’t,” InuYasha said.
Shiori looked at them with a soft smile. “Well, if you don’t need anything else right now, I should probably call Shippou, who I am sure is worried and then head home. You could all use some rest I think, but don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything.” She stood up. “I’m so happy for you Inu-onii-chan.”
“Keh, thanks,” he replied. “There’s so much… Thank you, imouto. I can never repay you, never.”
Shiori wiped away a tear. “And what is my life worth? We’re family, so that means there is no debt here only love. I’ll see you all soon.”
Shiori left and InuYasha got up. He carefully laid their daughter in the cradle and then placed her brother beside her. He scooted it as close to the bed as he could so that Kagome could hang her hand over the side and touch them both and then laid down behind her, molding his body to hers and holding her close. He buried his face in her hair and tried not to fall apart on her. There weren’t words for what it felt like to have her back in his arms to be able to breath in the scent of her. It was like he was finally alive again.
Kagome put her hand on the arm that was draped over her as she lay spooned in front of him. “I was so scared. I prayed every day that you would find me before he could take our baby.”
“You aren’t the only one,” he admitted. “I was half out of my mind. If I hadn’t had the scrolls to work on or Shiori who kept telling me that you were still alive I don’t know what I would have done. Damn I fucking missed you.”
“I missed you too, so much,” she said. “Promise me you’ll stay with us at least for a few days. I know it might cause problems and that I’m being selfish, but I really need you with me.”
“There is no way in hell that I am leaving you and our pups any time soon,” he told her. “Besides I told Sesshomaru. He knew the baby was mine so he can make excuses if anyone wonders where I am. Just try and get some rest now. I’m not going anywhere.”
