Chapter Twenty-Five
Engaged“Torn?” That’s why Ookami-sama hates me so much. I’m always happy, always lucky, and I can
almost always see the good side of things.”“Oh,” Kagome said, popping one of the marshmallows she’d
brought into her mouth, “and why does she hate you for it?”“Because that’s not how she was raised, Kagome-san,” Kaede
began, “Kaji-san was raised to take over her father’s estate, which meant
learning the art of war and other such necessities.”“While at the same time trying to learn how to be a lady, let
alone be the future Lady of the South.”
Tora smirked.“What’s so funny?”
Shippo asked.“Nothing, Chan-chan, it’s nothing.”
At the wolf den...
“Please?”
“No way.”

“Kouga-kun!” Kaji
protested.“I said no.”
“Why?”
For the past hour, Kaji had been trying to convince Kouga she
was healthy enough to go outside. To
prove her point, she’d tried singeing a few of his bangs, but only managed to
darken a small spot on the wall.“I told you before that I’m not going to let you out of my
sight. Healthy or not, it doesn’t
matter. I don’t ever want to lose you
again.”Baring her teeth, Kaji tried swiping at him, but missed him...
for the third time that day.“I’m a big girl, Kouga.
I can handle myself.”“I said...”
“For goodness sakes, Kouga, I’m not dead yet!” Kaji exclaimed, taking a defensive stance.
This statement maduga uga back against the wall and sink to
the floor, sighing as he did so, “I know you’re not dead yet, and for
that I’m glad, but...”“But what, Kouga?
Huh? But what?”Kouga didn’t know what he could say that wouldn’t get him
into trouble.“I-I-I... I just want to be near you all the time. I know that if I let you go outside, you’ll
want to go out by yourself, and I just can’t allow that. I need to be with you, Kaji-chan, because
you still haven’t figured out how to link yourself to me, and I just wanted to
be near you in case you all of a sudden remember.”Calming down enough to kneel before him, Kaji took his chin
in her right hand, “Kouga-kun, if you allow me to go outside, I will remember and
find the one plant that is needed to link us.
I swear it on my brother’s grave.”Knowing better than to question her when she swore upon her
brother’s grave, Kouga nodded, “All right, but I want to be with you at all
times.”“Oh you will be, I promise.
Come now, Kouga-kun, let us run as wolves should run.”Those who would take you merely for the power you could give
them. I want all the world to know that
you are mine.”Kaji nodded, looking down at the two little scars that showed
where Kouga had bitten. Looking up into
his eyes, Kaji ran the index finger of her right hand from the base of his neck
and along his collarbone. She traced
the bone near his shoulder, her eyes glittering with mischief and a smirk
tugging at her lips.While Kouga was trying to figure out why she was smirking,
Kaji sunk her fingernail just under his skin and made a small of of her own:
a crescent moon about an inch in length.It was only when she began licking it that he realized she’d
done anything.Still wearing the smirk, Kaji asked, “What’s with the blank
look? Did you think that you were the
only one allowed to claim me as yours?”“No! No, I
