Despite her best efforts to push the dream for her mind, Lillian remained troubled by it for the rest of the day. On the outside she had looked no different. Perhaps it hadn’t worked? She had stared at her reflection for a very long time. Seeking out the minutest of changes. None had surfaced. She felt like a failure. She isolated herself in the library, staring into the warming demon fire that flickered in the hearth. Sesshoumaru and Youko sensed her inner turmoil and her need for space. They fought the instinct to barge in and demand that she relinquish all worry to them. Sesshoumaru had received word from Inuyasha. Things were looking bleak in the human realm. The mikos were doing their best to quell the rising tide of demonic power. But, it was much like holding back a tsunami with a paper umbrella. Delno and his rogue priestesses were wreaking havoc. Headlines sped across the globe. Higher crime, violence, strange deaths and disappearances. The first Mekharat was feeding off the energies of hatred, fear, and weakness. Humans were indulging in their most base desires because of the influencing factors. Completely unaware that a war for their survival was about to spill over into their fragile lives. The stoic demon pressed his clawed thumbs to his eyes and exhaled deeply. Youko eyed his companion. “It’s getting bad Sesshoumaru” he said quietly, “We are running out of time.” The lord eyed the thief across from him. Silver ears were pinned back. Of course Youko would feel it all too. “I used to think the time would come, that man would rise above the beast.” Sesshoumaru admitted softly, “How many eons must pass in childhood?” Youko chuffed “I gave up thinking that way a very long time ago.” Sesshoumaru stared at his fellow guardian, “What changed your mind?” The fox shrugged, “Conversations with a priest.” Those pale gold eyes rolled to meet the dog lord’s fully. “But we still have work to do. And that out there, isn’t going to wait.” And didn’t he know it? “The Mekharat is close.” Delno’s chief hunter said to the small party of elite fighters and priestesses. “I can smell her. She is not at full power yet. We must hurry. Cloak your spiritual pressures.” They moved swiftly, silently through the trees. Weapons readied. When the large demon lifted his hand they paused and stared at the fat bole of the tree less than 300 meters before them. His icy eyes narrowed in concentration. He let loose a small burst of power. One that would provoke a reaction from only one creature in all the realms. The Mekharat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Lillian?” She blinked at the soft feminine voice that broke her reverie. Turning her head she saw the last Mekharat sitting in the seat opposite her. Her kind face was drawn into a sad smile. “Mekharat.” Lillian greeted. “You feel it don’t you? The sensation that something is wrong? That you are in trouble or have done something wrong?” So much for pleasantries. Lillian nodded, “I don’t understand what it is.” “Delno” the other replied, her soft eyes moving to the fire, “He has infiltrated your dreams. A dangerous thing Lillian. He uses this to his advantage.” “Did he really…” Lillian’s voice fell away as through afraid to ask the question plaguing her. “Love her?” The golden spirit asked softly. “Yes. Very much so. Love is a strange thing. It can drive us to be better, it can drive us mad. It brings out the best and worst in all of us. Love is not what is there now Lillian, and you must never forget that. He will ensnare and enslave you, destroy you to breathe life into the first.” Lillian nodded, “They said I should harbor no sympathy for him. It would be my downfall. But the idea is just so tragic. I don’t know what I am supposed to do. I couldn’t help but feel something in the dream.” “And you will. That is part of the mark. It unlocks powers and memories. Let me ask you this Lillian. Do you love them?” Lavender eyes blinked, “Yes.” “And the long buried duty to your fellow man? Is it still there?” “Always.” “Would you die for the preservation of either one?” She swallowed hard, “I’m not afraid of death.” The lighter woman laughed, “Only dying. Death is the easy part. Be strong. If you wish to kill him Liliian, you must be brave enough to do what the rest of us were not.” “And what is that?” The woman was shimmering away, “Bring him in close. Lull his heart and then destroy it.” “What?” But Lillian was alone in the room. Suddenly there was a terrible pain in her head and in her chest. She clutched both and forced herself to her feet. She needed to get to the others. The demons found her in the hallway, her mental calls frantic and thready. “Lillian?” She raised her head and they saw glittering ruby hued eyes, “They have come.” The party surrounded the tree, before blasting it with demonic energies. The priestesses had taken position to the rear and had set up holy barrier to contain the two guardians. If they touched it, they would be purified into nothingness. Sesshoumaru and Youko burst through the surface, Lillian sheltered between them. Youko forced a smile for her, “If you want to fight, now’s the time little Mekharat.” She drew her weapon and they pressed close to one another’s backs. Sesshoumaru split from them. “Youko. Take her.” Lillian watched as green light radiated from his form and suddenly she found herself enormous white toes. Sesshoumaru barked and snarled in true form. His jaws dripping toxic saliva. Lillian blinked up at him. “Yo..Youko?” She whispered. The fox chuckled in her ear as he drew her closer to him, “Well you knew men were dogs… so what? They have a holy barrier up. I need you to blast through it.” “I don’t know how.” “Focus on a specific spot and force all of your energy through that spot.” Came that soft voice again. Lillian blinked, “That will work?” “Of course.” Lillian found Youko eyeing her strangely, “Sorry” she blurted out, “I see dead people.” He shook his head at her and then nodded to Sesshoumaru. “If he or I touch that it’s gonna hurt like hell. If we were lesser demons it would destroy us. It still might. You ready?” Lillian closed her eyes, took a deep breath and then opened them. Her gaze locked onto one area of the shimmering barrier and she started when she felt the hot tingling tendrils of power wrapping around her body, lacing through her fingers. Suddenly she lifted her hand and a burst of red light shot from her palm. It impacted the barrier with a thunderous crash and the ground shook. A spider web network of cracks ran along the barrier and then it shattered. There were shouts from the demons and priestesses but Sesshoumaru was already leaping upwards and Youko and Lillian bolted in the opposite direction. ‘We have to help Sessh!’ ‘We have to split the group!’ ‘But!’ ‘He’ll be fine.
