Chapter 25: Dangerous, Deadly, Sesshoumaru, part 1
Again Sesshoumaru was speechless when he saw his father, grandfather, uncle, and the elemental twins, Kyoura and Ryuura.
He was prepared to retrieve his mate alone. It was his duty as Inuyasha’s protector, since he was not yet an adult to be traveling by himself and also, Sesshoumaru wanted to spill some blood—his beast was restless and needed to be sedated.
His attention was called away from them for a minute when he felt a slight tugging on his hamaka.
Glancing down he saw, “Rin.”
Kneeling to her level (pretty much the same way Inuyasha had done not so long ago when they first met) and wrapping small arms around his neck, Sesshoumaru stiffened from the unexpected contact; but was nearly brought to tears in the moment—for the first time since rescuing Rin, he heard her voice.
“Please bring Kassan home.”
She released him; running back to Izayoi’s opened embrace and the other inu females.
The group of warriors wasted no time to get to their destination.
oOoOoOo
Music filled the grand hall of the palace as the concubines swayed to the hypnotic melody.
Sitting upon the throne was Ryu in all his dragon glory. Long grey hair, eyes as red as blood with vertical purple markings on each side of his face and dark purple lips moist from sipping on the goblet of blood-wine, which he now swirled, bored with tonight’s entertainment, but that didn’t prevent him from molesting the female that sat upon his lap, using his free hand to fondle her breasts or to delve in her inner folds between her legs—stimulating the little nub of flesh—he was ready to leave and continue his fun in his bedchambers.
Standing beside the ornate chair was the dragon’s adviser, Midorikawa; an imposing dragon with ankle length stark white hair and silver eyes—considered beautiful by all who set sights upon him, wanting his favor and body even if it was for one night.
“Master, please. I don’t think that your father would appreciate that you have turned his throne room into a brothel.”
Scoffing at his mentor, Ryu replied, “What my father doesn’t know won’t hurt him, Midori, and you shall not mention it to him. At any rate, he’s away and I’m here to do as I please, which reminds me, has my ship from the West arrived yet? I’m expecting precious cargo.”
“No, master. I have not received word, and what pray tell did you purchase this time. Should I be concerned?” Midorikawa asked nervously. He knew his young lord had a knack for buying things that he shouldn’t and his father was getting fed-up with his son’s antics.
Waving his hand dismissively, Ryu said, “I made a legal transaction this time, and if the vixen is as beautiful as Lady Kaori described, I might be inclined to keep her for my own personal use and breed with her. However, she is carrying a hatchling, so that might pose a problem.”
“Master, you know your father strongly forbids the sale and trade of females or males for that matter. Plus, he wants you to mate—someone of noble birth and not some harlot. He has expressed the need of legitimate grand-heirs,” Midorikawa warned.
Ryu disregarded his mentor and prepared to retire for the night with his bed-partner when a page rushed up to Midorikawa, looking quite nervous and unsettled. There weren’t many things that could shake-up a dragon –even a young one, but whatever it was now had Midori on edge. The page left—running out of the hall, almost tripping in his haste.
“Everyone clear out now!” Midorikawa announced, beads of sweat dotting across his brow.
When no one made a move to leave, he sent a fireball in the throng of party goers—that got everyone scrambling for safety.
“Midori! What’s gotten-” Ryu started but was cut-off.
“Lord Taisho is here.”
“For what?” Ryu asked worried as one of the servants poured water over his hands to clean them. Another handing him a cloth to dry them off before straighten the pillows and opening some of the skylights to circulate a bit of fresh air to get rid of the stench of sex.
“Good question,” Midorikawa replied, satisfied that all was as it should be before nodding to the guards to open the doors to allow in their visitors once the throne room was cleared and presentable.
The precession of Inu youkai was impressive to say the least and two elementals was simply unheard of (as most if not all were no longer in existence. Humans were a little aggressive in hunting them for the glowing jewel spheres in the middle of their foreheads, catching them off guard or worse, employing unscrupulous priests or priestesses powerful enough to remove the coveted gem) and those that were left kept to themselves.
Another Inu brought up the rear—Midorikawa couldn’t place his name but knew he was related to Lord Taisho in some way as they strongly resemble each other. In addition to that the unknown Inu, Midorikawa was sure that the young male was Lord Taisho’s heir—Lord Sesshoumaru—a daiyoukai already having a fierce reputation of an efficient assassin; hence his name, Killing Perfection.
All his musings aside, Midorikawa focused as to why the Great Dog Demon would come here. He had a sinking suspicion it had something to do with his charge’s dealing with Lady Kaori. Oh, he prayed to kami that it wasn’t.
“Welcome, Lord Taisho. Had we known in advance of your visit, we would have prepared a decent welcoming feast for you and your company,” Midorikawa greeted.
“I did not come here to bandy words or make niceties in the Valley of Dragons,” Toga growled already making his hostility known.
“No? Then why are you here, my lord?” Midorikawa asked finally broaching the reason for their visit.
“I wish to speak to Ryukotsusei,” Toga requested none too politely.
“I’m Ryukotsusei.”
Not being one for patience at this point, Toga snarled his displeasure, eyes seeping red. “Do not attempt to placate me with false words and trickery! You are not the Fire Dragon Lord!”
“My lord, this is Master Ryu—Lord Ryukotsusei’s son,” Midorikawa interjected to prevent a fight.
Toga blinked, so surprised that he blurted out, “When did that dragon hatch an heir?”
Playfulness was lit in crimson orbs from the comment. “My, my… you have been out of the loop for some time, Lord Taisho. My father did send you an announcement. However at the time you’ve been a little busy yourself with the birth of your own son—Sesshoumaru—if I’m not mistaken,” Ryu said smirking at the stunned look on the Inu lord’s face.
“My father is away… tending to a delicate family matter. May I be of some assistance to you, my lord?”
Finally, closing his mouth from the shock, Toga spoke, “It’s about my niece, Kaori.”
“Oh? Was she not happy with the gold she’d received as payment?”
Toga closed his eyes in dread as his stomach dropped like a rock from what he just heard. Kaori basically sold her cousin as a concubine.
“How much did you pay her?”
“A large chest full of dragon gold,” Ryu answered.
The situation just went from bad to worse. Dragon’s gold couldn’t be returned, not without severe consequences. Something else had to be offered in its place of equal or greater value. Toga wasn’t sure what he had could be exchanged for that amount of monetary currency.
At any rate, Toga was going to do what he do best.
“You do realize that while the exchange of concubines is not prohibited… However, the sale of royalty is something else entirely different.” Toga replied.
“What do you mean?” Ryu asked concerned.
“Since you didn’t bother to send your request directly to me—this transaction of yours might be seen as an act to incite a war with the West and adjoining allies. I’m quite sure your father has no desire to start a war with me. While I must admit, he is a formidable opponent, Ryukotsusei is not invincible.
“Kaori is merely a visitor herself to my home and has no authority whatsoever to authorize such a sale. Simply put, Kaori sold Inuyasha to you—my second son and heir.”
Both dragons blanched.
oOoOoOo
Ryu felt sick to his stomach. His brash actions might have started a war with the Inu clan. Oh, his father was not going to be pleased about this, not one darn bit.
Damage control had to be done post-haste.
“She lied to you,” Toga continued, taking secret delight at the turn of events.
“She told me that the female in question had been attempting to claim her chosen mate, Lord Sesshoumaru, and I can see why,” Ryu admitted, smiling appreciatively at said demon (who sneered in disdain at being ogled).
“I’m sure without a doubt Kaori didn’t tell you is that she despises Inuyasha,” Toga said.
“Why?” Midorikawa asked curious as to why someone would go through all the trouble to be rid of a rival.
“Because Inuyasha is mated to Sesshoumaru,” Takehiko replied for the first time since arriving. “And she used this opportunity while he and my son were away assisting my other son, Gorai, to orchestrate this mess.”
Sensing the power radiating from the other Inu, Midorikawa couldn’t help but ask, “And who are you, my lord?”
“I am, Takehiko—head of the Shiro Inu Clan.”
Midorikawa paled. “The Kin-Slayer,” he whispered afraid that Takehiko would go on a killing rampage right there in the throne room.
Ryu dropped his goblet—wine spilling all over the marbled tile flooring from Midori’s declaration. He heard the tales of the great and terrible Inu. Takehiko was a demon not to be trifled with. He was the very reason why they didn’t have any dealing with the Inus.
Oh, this is bad—very, very bad, Midorikawa bemoaned to himself.
Languidly walking to the forefront, the broadsword strapped to his back, Apocalypse, moved with his motion; Takehiko took immense pleasure in their frightful countenance.
“I see that you have heard of me,” Takehiko commented as if he was merely discussing the weather.
“Forgive me, my lord, but rumor had it that you haven’t left your halls in nearly half a century. What made you decide to do so now?” Midorikawa added trying to make sure that his voice remained even and steady.
“That is true. I visited only once and that was when Inuyasha was born, fifty years ago and before that, two hundred fifty years when Sesshoumaru was born. I have a half dozen grand-heirs and out of all of them Inuyasha is my favorite, my most precious child; and I would not hesitate whatsoever to wrought death and destruction to those who would cause him harm or otherwise. Are you understanding my point, Midorikawa?” Takehiko explained making his threat simple and concise.
“I understand very well, my lord, and I’m sure, Master Ryu has no objections to the terms and conditions that would be offered as recompense for this faux pas.”
“Ryu, do you have any idea what you have done with this little transaction of yours,” Toga inquired.
“Oh, I’m sure that he does have some idea, my lord,” Midorikawa exclaimed.
“Midori, that’s quite enough,” Ryu chastised, rubbing his temples to ward off his on-coming headache.
“Your father will be home soon with this catastrophe at this doorstep! You do not think of the consequences of what your actions might bring—now, this situation needs to be corrected before his return home,” Midorikawa ranted nearly in hysterics—ready to start pulling out his hair—clearly distraught.
“I got a better idea,” Toga cut in.
Midorikawa and Ryu eyed the Inu lord with fear as there was a steel malicious glint brewing within the amber-golden depths.
Sesshoumaru interjected fed-up with the exchange between his father and the dragon, “Where is Inuyasha?”
Stopping short from the question and a slight respite from the situation at hand, Ryu had to think about it. “I haven’t seen him. Truthfully, the ship that was coming from the West has not come into port.”
Turning sharply on his heel Sesshoumaru was leaving.
“Sesshoumaru, you will not-”
“I’m going to search for my mate, Father, and you will not stop me. I will not lose him again.”
The young daiyoukai left with the twins following directly behind him.
oOoOoOo
Staggering through the dense forest, Inuyasha came upon an abandoned village. He sighed in relief at the thought of not running into anyone—demon or human—he didn’t want to risk the safety of his pup. Venturing further into the village, it seemed as if everyone left in a hurry.
Clothes were still hanging on lines to dry in the sun, were now tattered and faded. Tables were set for meal time—the food long since rotted and turned to dust. Once where lush crops flourished, they had withered and died, weeds and grass growing in the patch of earth.
The pond at one time must have been filled with water teaming with fish—now it no longer supplied food or nourishment. Bones of fish lay at the bottom of dry, cracked mud. Vultures circled overhead high in the sky searching for any scrap of carrion that would ease the persistent growling in their bellies.
Inuyasha cautiously made his way to the other end of the village without any mishaps, but that’s not to say that nothing would happen. He just hoped that whatever decided to crop up happened after he had left the area.
Again, Inuyasha knew for sure that the gods were mocking him as thunder clapped in the far off distance. It would rain soon and he needed to find shelter as well as food (he couldn’t remember the last time he ate a proper meal); but he wasn’t about to stay here, no matter how tempting.
Something was following him and he wanted to stay mobile. Inuyasha didn’t want to give whatever it was a chance to catch-up to him.
Ears twitching at movement from his right, Inuyasha barely had time react.
Quickly using one of defenses without hand-to-hand combat; Inuyasha cut into the palms of each hand.
“BLADES OF BLOOD!”
The scythe blades cut through the air, slicing everything in their path.
Getting ready to release another barrage of his signature attack he called out, “Come out now or I won’t hesitate to cut you down,” Inuyasha threatened, as blood pooled on the ground at his feet as he refused to allow his self-inflected wounds to heal.
“Whoa!”
Golden eyes widened in shock and Inuyasha stopped short, blinking in mute surprise.
Standing no higher than his thigh was a demon fox child.
oOoOoOo
The motley crew of demons scoured the countryside searching for any sign of Inuyasha’s whereabouts.
They finally ended up at the seaside ports. Ryuura was talking to the harbor master, questioning him about any ships that had recently docked from the West.
Kyoura in the meantime was going from merchant to merchant asking them if they had seen anyone matching Inuyasha’s description.
And Sesshoumaru stood by the ocean’s edge looking out at the horizon as the wind blew his silver mane and fluffy tail. He watched the distant sky change from blue to a reddish-orange as the sun began to sink. He took in all the sounds and scents around him in a bid to discover his pupped mate. Sesshoumaru refuse to believe that Inuyasha was to lost to the sea in a watery grave.
The wind kicked-up again, stirring the air around the young Inu lord and with it a very familiar scent.
oOoOoOo
Nearing knocking over his throne, Ryu stared at the Inu lord as if he’d lost what little marbles he had left of his facilities.
“You cannot be serious!” Ryu shouted.
Midorikawa covered his laugh with a cough by turning around to hide it.
“Bu-but, my lord, I-I don’t see how that will rectify the situation at hand,” Ryu stammered. His worst nightmare being voiced out loud by someone else.
“Oh, I’m sure that your father would agree to such an arrangement. Besides, this little clandestine will be kept between those involved. No one else needs to know about it,” Toga replied like the sly old dog that he was—manipulating his chess pieces into position for checkmate.
Please beyond words, Takehiko smiled inwardly at his son’s cunning. The young fire dragon really didn’t stand at chance at trying to out-wit Toga. Now the only thing that was left to do was get everything into motion.
However, before anyone could make a move the whole palace trembled with the force of the shockwave that hit it. At the same time, Tetsusaiga and Tensaiga rattled in their sheathes at Toga’s side while a plum of purple smoke rose up from Sounga—the danger was clear and present.
“Otousan, we must hurry,” Toga started.
“What’s happening? We don’t have earthquakes here,” Ryu asked grabbing his sword and securing it at his waist.
Coming up short, Toga said, “That was no earthquake, Ryu, that was Sesshoumaru. Apparently, he’s found Inuyasha.”
oOoOoOo
A light misting of rain pelted Sesshoumaru as he walked to the edge of the harbor that led into the near-by forest. Not waiting for the twins, he made his way in the direction that carried Inuyasha’s scent.
Sesshoumaru thought about what his father said regarding Kaori…
“I mean it, Sesshoumaru! You will not harm a hair on your cousin’s head,” Toga demanded of his son.
“She has brought shame to this family and dishonor to me by selling my mate as if he’s a common whore, Otousan. This is something that cannot be ignored or swept under a rug to be forgotten,” Sesshoumaru replied. He was mad beyond repair, which was evident by the crimson tint to his normally amber eyes.
“I know, Sesshoumaru, and Kaori will be punished, but she will not be put to death,” Toga said stopping in his tracks to look at the misery on Sesshomaru's face of being separated from Inuyasha. Bowing his head, in embarrassment, Sesshoumaru admitted something for the first time since acknowledging it himself.
“I love Inuyasha, father, and if anything happens to him…”
“Do not despair, my son. We will find him and you will be able to tell him how you feel. It’s been there all the time, you had to realize that emotion for yourself, Sesshoumaru,” Toga answered smiling at how much his son has matured. “Remember, Sesshoumaru, having someone to protect is not a weakness but a strength.”
The rain was coming down heavily as the young demon lord took in the dilapidated dwellings of what was probably a thriving village at one time. Sesshoumaru also noted the scorching burn marks on the saturated wood and surrounding area.
Still not moving from his spot at the entrance in the village—there in the loosene mud—Sesshoumaru saw a footprint and not just a human or youkai footprint. It was Inuyasha’s.
Inuyasha detested wearing any kind of footwear, regardless of weather conditions. Inuyasha went barefoot year-round—making him a child of nature.
Taking in a deep breath of air, Sesshoumaru differentiated all the scents of the village. He noted Inuyasha’s faint earthen scent along with the scent of a young fox; and two demon males—blood and death following in their wake as well as lust.
Not bothering to wait for Ryuura and Kyoura, they would eventually catch-up to him, Sesshoumaru was on the move again at a much faster pace—a pair of demons was hunting Inuyasha and his small companion…
