Chapter 24: Case "Solved"
(A/N: Warning! Citrus! I figured we were due for a lustful reminder.
I'm jumping around to snatch up important scenes only and assuming that my readers know the series enough to not need a word for word repetition.)
Tossing and turning in her sleeping bag, Kagome just couldn't get her simmering body to hold still. Her hormones had been raging today, and nothing was working to cool down the impure thoughts that plagued her mind. Even a dip in the crisp stream only lasted a few minutes before she started thinking about Naraku's heated embrace, falling right back into the same cycle. She imagined him appearing around every tree and boulder, whisking her away and doing who knows what, but oh how badly she wanted to know what. Now laying on the uneven ground, she kept envisioning a root that prodded into her lower back to be decidedly more living, and throbbing. Hugging her arms around her writhing body, she wished he was holding her, giving promises of what was to come, but that would not happen, not tonight. As badly as she craved him, he was miles away, holed up recovering, and there was nothing she could do about it. Her lustful desires dulled her common sense, wishing for something both illogical and greedy.
Recognizing this condition was not going away on its own, Kagome flopped futilely in her cocoon, throwing a mini-tantrum. She stared up at the stars above, still many times clearer than in her time, even with the sparse clouds obscuring her view, and could swear she saw his face outlined in the illuminations, like a constellation. Everywhere she looked, he was there. She hadn't gotten very good at this, but it would seem she would have to take care of this "ailment" herself if she was to get any sleep tonight. Sliding her hands down her body and easily under her pajamas, she explored, searching for areas Naraku had discovered. Her mind was already going frantic; it took no effort to bring forth a fantasy of her lover doing these things to her, teasing her body into eagerness. One hand explored low, trying to duplicate the skills she had been shown that glorious night, while another molested and fondled around the rest of her body roughly, mimicking the tendencies of the one she wanted so desperately. She remembered how feral he was, a fierce hunger showing in his eyes as he thoroughly ravaged her, taking whatever he wanted and making her scream for him in the process. But the most enticing image was the expression he wore when he would release as waves of pleasure wracked his powerful body. The roar that had echoed in her ears was a sound that would never be forgotten, and the quenched look in his eyes was her drug. He made her feel as if she was the only one who could satisfy him, like no other even had a chance.
Kagome's hands sped up at the visuals, desperately working to meet her end along with her fantasy. Refusing to slow, even though fatigue was beginning to plague muscles not used to the strenuous activity, she crested with a gaped mouth, no sound escaping with the massive inhale, back arched up off the ground. The curvature she formed sunk back down to the ground as she panted heavily, stars other than the ones in the sky dancing around her head. It was only when she relaxed did she notice the cramps in her hands, but it was so minor compared to her body's frenzied need before. She was contented, it was not as good as he could do, but it was sufficient enough to lapse into a dream-filled sleep, where 'Naraku' continued his assault on her willing body.
'Inuyasha, I'm going to kill you for this,' Kagome fumed silently, not really wishing his death, but perhaps a couple dozen 'sits' once they got out of here. It was all his fault and Kagome had tried to convince him to go around this horrendous place, but his insistence would not be wavered. He rationalized that Naraku belonged in a rotten swamp such as this and commenced with trudging along straight through the middle of it. Kagome knew that he wasn't here; he was holed up in the mountain on the horizon that was finally beginning to come into view through the clouds, not here. That knowledge was not something she could share, however, so her dog continued to sniff out every northern direction lead, which landed them in this current predicament. With Naraku's disappearance, demons from all around found the confidence to reemerge from hiding and they had already been caught off guard several times on their mushy trip. One of those attacks was enough to knock Kagome into the putrid water, soaking her clothes and hair straight through. The smell was so rancid it made her sick to her stomach. The worse part, she had no way of cleaning off the sickening stench, it made her gut churn and nearly expel its contents. Sango had held up a blanket so she could change out of the wet clothes and into her spare uniform, but the smell would not leave her hair that was now laced with green slime. She thanked her rare indulgence in buying that perfume now, for it was enough to cover the swamp water smell, at least to her senses, and lessened the gross factor.
Wading through the unsteady vegetation, and trying to keep her nose pinched, the worst happened. The ground was deceiving, soft but appeared solid, overgrown by marshy plants that concealed hidden patches of muck and grime beneath the boggy ground. It was just Kagome's luck to fall straight into one such sinkhole only to be swiftly yanked out of the putrid water by her worried friends. Kagome was thoroughly disgusted now, having fallen not once, but twice. The gods must hate her, there was no other explanation, because it surely couldn't be that she was clumsy. No, never. Again, she changed, but this time into her pajamas, having no other dry clothes and not wanting to catch a cold. She reapplied the perfume to cover up the scent enough that she wouldn't hurl and tucked the precious bottle away in her bag, which had miraculously not gotten soaked through, not having realized it was that water resistant. At this point, Inuyasha seemed to suddenly grow a brain and decide to carry her, ensuring she wouldn't fall again.
In about another hour, they finally made it out of the bog and as swiftly as the landscape transitioned into the monotonous and expansive wasteland, it switched back into lush and lively forest, complete with fresh water flowing through a creek. Kagome wasted no time in gathering up her soaked clothes and soaps and heading straight for clean water. Out of sight from her friends, but certainly not out of scent range, she hurriedly trudged along with wet shoes. The squishing sludge was noisy, but the voice that was yelling back at camp was louder.
Kouga arrived in his typical style just as Kagome walked off to get clean, and immediately started barking in a less than friendly style, "Hey mutt, where's Kagome?"
"Keh, like I'd tell you," Inuyasha scoffed unconcernedly.
"You'd better tell me why I can't pick up her scent anywhere now!" he growled, getting even more angry by the second at not knowing if she was safe of not.
"What are you getting at?" Inuyasha challenged back, trying to figure out what the stupid wolf's deal was this time. Its not like Kagome got captured or anything, she was only a few minutes away. Couldn't he smell the horrid "perfume" she doused herself in? As much as he hated that smell, he had to admit it was better than the swamp water she was covered in.
"You'd better not have lost her again," Kouga threatened.
"Use your nose already and figure it out for yourself," Inuyasha brushed him off, just irritating Kouga more when he couldn't detect her clean, sweet scent in the vicinity.
"You idiot," Kouga accused, pointing at the mutt, "she got kidnapped didn't she!"
Kagome listened in on the commotion, easily identifying what sounded like Kouga and Inuyasha arguing. 'Hmm, I could continue on to my much needed bath, but what if Kouga comes looking for me, and finds me naked,' she sighed heavily and turned around to go say "hi" and see what he wanted. The two canines looked to be just about to start scrapping when her voice rang out, "Hi, Kouga."
He snapped out of it and looked up confused, "Kagome?" She wasn't in the same short green outfit, instead wearing strange blue pants and a pink sleeveless shirt. Dismissing Inuyasha, he rushed over to her, scenting her furiously. "You smell different," he finally stated confused.
'No, duh,' she thought remembering her less than sanitary dip earlier today. "I fell in the swamp, I'm not surprised if I stink."
"You did?" he openly smelled her again. "That's not what I smell." He kept sniffing, getting a little close for comfort. "It's more like, something sweet, and carnal." (A/N: Remember the name of the perfume was Sweet Passion.)
"Maybe you are referring to the perfume I'm wearing, it's the only other thing I can think of," she said walking over to her bag and fishing out the pink bottle. "Is this what you smell?" She held it out in her palm for him to smell. It reminded her of the cartoon scenes where they have a hound dog scent an item and then hunt down the owner and she couldn't help but giggle.
"Hmm, yeah, that's it," Kouga clarified as she put it back. "I can't even detect your natural scent or the swamp underneath this new smell." He made a mental note to remember this scent as well, so he would not lose track of her like this again.
Kagome's eyes widened, "You can't?" He shook his head. He had no idea the information he had just given her and its implications. The perfume was strong enough to mask scents after all.
Sango and Miroku had been left alone at the campsite. Kagome and Shippo bathed and cleaned her sullied clothes and Inuyasha went off to hunt. He took this opportunity to readdress a previous conversation. "Sango, do you recall our earlier conversation about Kagome?" Sango immediately blushed, but nodded. "I spoke with Inuyasha, and he convincingly denies having done anything with her."
"Well, maybe he was just embarrassed and lying," Sango proposed.
"It did not seem so," he shook his head. "I know you do not wish to revisit the memory, but please, tell me exactly what you saw."
"Well, I don't know," Sango blushed deeply and looked away, "its not like I sat there and watched them. I only saw a glimpse before I ran away." Miroku nodded, understanding her unease. "I remember silver hair, but maybe they weren't doing what I thought. Maybe they just fell, naked… or something, and I misunderstood the scene."
"Perhaps," Miroku acknowledged, letting Sango speculate on her self doubts over what she saw, but he was still quite certain Kagome had developed feelings for someone. 'Kouga did not seem to be the one, since she was quite obviously uncomfortable with his proximity earlier today. There is one other suspect, but it seems far too impossible. There is only one other demon I know of that has silver hair. Could it be possible that Kagome has lost her heart to the human-hating demon lord?'
(A/N: Spoiler alert! Episode 96: Jaken Falls Ill, where Sesshomaru confronts Inuyasha and gets directions to Naraku.)
Metal clashed as the two dog brothers engaged in yet another seemingly random fight. The shard hunters were following a pair of Siamyosho when the insects strangely fell from the sky, dead. Sesshomaru angrily accused Inuyasha of killing them and Inuyasha's mouth only secured this outcome. Last time Sesshomaru appeared, he let it be known, at least to Kagome, that he was aware of her interactions with Naraku and thus his presence was unsettling to the girl. Kagome watched nervously from the sidelines as Sesshomaru succeeded in knocking Tessaiga out of Inuyasha's grasp and pointed Tokijin to his throat menacingly. She let go of her own worries and rushed to his side intent on placating the volatile demon.
Miroku was going over the mass of evidence placed before him. It seemed so obvious now, especially when he heard Kagome yell at not only Inuyasha, but also at Sesshomaru to "knock it off." Sesshomaru did not allow anyone to order him around, and if she was still alive afterwards, it could only mean that he valued her existence, right? She still looked worried, not love-struck or anything, but then again, they had been fighting rather viciously. Her running after them with intent to intervene made him even more certain that there was something between them.
"Wait," Kagome panted, slightly out of breath. "Do you want to know where to find Naraku?"
Sesshomaru listened intently, even though his eyes never left his opponent, 'She would sell out her "lover?"'
"Then head for the ox-tiger, someone sensed Naraku's presence heading that way," Kagome continued, relaying the information.
'None of her companions seem surprised, therefore, that knowledge must be known by all of them,' Sesshomaru surmised.
"Kagome, shut-up," Inuyasha didn't want her getting involved and drawing Sesshomaru's wrath.
"In the direction of the ox-tiger?" Sesshomaru asked, scrutinizing her telling eyes. Her words were true, he could tell by her scent, but he could also detect nervousness and reluctance in her aura; she knew more than she was telling him. It was likely, she had not told the others in her group whatever knowledge she held either. "Perhaps an exchange in information, Wench."
His threat was clear to Kagome, 'Tell me what you know, or I will tell your companions what I know.' Kagome was slightly taken aback that he would use such tactics. "I'm not a Wench," she spat back.
"Need I prove why you are?" he challenged back easily.
She crossed her arms and huffed, "Alright already." She motioned to go somewhere else, and muttered under her breath, "Let's get this over with." Sesshomaru turned and sheathed his sword with a flourish, expecting her to follow.
"Kagome! What the hell?" Inuyasha had leapt up and was following her as well. "Where are you going with him?"
"Stay here, Inuyasha," Kagome advised. "I'll be right back."
"Yeah right," he growled, "like I would trust him alone with you?"
Sesshomaru did not like that insinuation one bit. He would never stoop so low as to use blackmail to bed a mere human female, one who was frequenting his enemy, none-the-less. The glare tossed over his shoulder said as much and Kagome collared her friend, "Inuyasha! I would really rather not have to say it. Now stay here and I'll be right back."
"Keh, fine," he relented angrily, "but don't go screaming for help if he decides to take advanta- decides to kill you." He changed his sentence halfway through at the formidable warning Sesshomaru's aura was giving him.
Miroku and Sango nearly had their jaws dropped as Kagome walked away with Sesshomaru so openly. 'Well, mystery solved,' the monk noted to himself. If only he had any idea how drastically he had misconstrued the information before him, he would not have been so calm.
Once they were far enough away, Sesshomaru began his investigation, not only for information on Naraku, but also to satisfy his curiosity, "Where is Naraku?"
"Why should I tell you anyways?" she stalled. Even though Naraku's letter told her she could use the information, she was still a bit worried for his safety with the "Killing Perfection" hunting him down.
Sesshomaru decided to go for curiosity first, and changed directions, "Traitor, if you are Inuyasha's wench, why have you bedded with Naraku?" She would be easier to handle if he caught her off-guard.
Kagome nearly growled at the titles he had given her, "I'm not a wench, traitor, nor do I belong to Inuyasha." At Sesshomaru's intense stare she clarified. "Inuyasha has chosen Kikyo and goes off to… do stuff, with her far more often than I have seen Naraku."
Sesshomaru could understand her bitterness over Inuyasha choosing a dead woman over her, but was still disgusted, "So you fall into the arms of your enemy to spite him?" His words were laced with a deep disdain for her lack of loyalty.
"No," she denied, "I hold no anger towards Inuyasha. Its just that Naraku, uh, happens to be skilled in certain... activities." She struggled to rationalize her reasons to the judgmental demon. "It's just a physical attraction and he makes me feel good, nothing more." 'What a lie, I know its more than that. He makes me happy, but I doubt this dog would understand that.'
"I do not believe you. You protect his location, and thus protect him," he gave a sly grin that unnerved Kagome even more than his angry glare earlier, "I think, you care about him, maybe even love him. Otherwise, you would not have hesitated to reveal your knowledge to me, seeing as I already know of your transgressions." There was only silence from the little human. Her species as a whole were notoriously slow, so he gave her feeble mind a chance to catch up.
Kagome was in denial of what she just heard, 'I... love Naraku? Is that why I've been so worried about him? I know I care about him, but love?' Shaking the thoughts away for now, she looked back to Sesshomaru, "That's none of your business anyways."
"Which brings me back to my original question, where is he? Your life is dependent on your answer," he added, tired of her hesitating.
Kagome gasped at the threat and glared, "Mt. Hakurei." She was practically grinding her teeth together at not being given a choice. Hopefully, Naraku knew what he was doing in allowing this information to leak freely. As far as Kagome knew, only the Red Tessaiga had been able to break his barrier anyways. And then there was that hair demon that said no one could reach Naraku. "It doesn't matter though," Kagome decided to let Sesshomaru in on this little tidbit, "we also encountered intelligence that he's hiding somewhere that no one can touch him. You probably won't even be able to lay a finger on him."
"I can tell that you do not completely believe what you are saying," Sesshomaru pointed out as he started to leave. Tossing over his shoulder, he added, "The only reason I am allowing you to live is because you are a source of information. When your usefulness has ended, I will no longer tolerate your disrespect."
(A/N: This last scene is the one I had a bit of trouble refining. How does Sesshomaru sound in this, in character enough?
I'm going to have fun torturing Sesshomaru with this newfound assumption Miroku and Sango have come to, hehehe.)
