Chapter 26: Oh, Isn’t This Making You Lose Your Mind?
The glow of the laptop screen filled his otherwise dark and quiet room. Inuyasha knew he’d let his temper get the better of him. He shouldn’t have stormed out of dinner like that, not in public, not with Kikyo, again. This meant, of course, he would have to apologize and she would be completely indifferent and cold about it. He groaned and looked to see if there was any mention from Kagome. There was no video from her, but instead, it looked like she had scanned a few of her sketches for him. In a blue pen she had written notes in the negative space of the images too so he could tell what she was talking about. The first was a simple cherry blossom floating on the surface of water; a few rings surrounded the blossom, rippling on the water. She wrote: It’s peaceful right now. But it’s also very quiet. The second sketch was of a woman. Her back was bent in an arch, like she was a perfect crescent moon. Her hair was long and wavy. The sketch was very basic, with few lines and little shading. While she was bent, almost like she was falling, two large wings protruding from her back surrounded her. The feathers of the wings were just a tiny hint of pink. This one just said: She was in my dream last night. She fell from the sky with a thousand falling feathers. He frowned but scrolled on to the third picture. There was a little heart balloon and a small cartoonish-looking Kagome holding onto its string. Her hair was scraggly and she wore pants and a white t-shirt. She was smiling and in her other hand was a sign. Miss you. She ended the e-mail with a note, “Take make more pictures!” Inuyasha smiled and saved the pictures to a folder on his desktop. With one last glance at the pictures he closed his laptop and lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Kagome was always nervous about anything she dreamt; he hoped she wasn’t too worried without him. Honestly, what could she be worried about? She had the apartment to herself, her only job was to sketch, and she could do whatever she wanted. He chuckled, imagining her dancing about the house with a bowl of ramen. “Klutz.” ---- Miroku sat at his desk in his dorm as Sango was in the shower. Last night he’d received a call from Koga asking him to meet today. Koga said it was fine for him to bring Sango to the meeting if that was what he wanted. Miroku could only assume that Koga wanted a united front for when he essentially ambushed Kagome’s life. Miroku rubbed the back of his neck. There was another e-mail from Kagome. She never said too much but had been in constant contact with him since he left for America. There was skyping, but Kagome tried hard not to let too much show. “Kagome, are you there?” The screen he looked back at was black, then shook, until Kagome’s face appeared. She was covered in dust and coughed, “Hey. What’s up?” “Why are you covered in dust?” Kagome laughed and rubbed dust off her cheek, “I’m doing some research on the relic. You know? The one that is going to separate me from Tsuki, hopefully permanently?” “Right, Inuyasha and Sango have mentioned it.” She sighed, “I know no one is taking this as seriously as me. I think it is vital that Tsuki and I separate.” “It’s not that we don’t take it seriously, I’m just in America studying for business exams,” he laughed and shrugged his shoulders. He held up flashcards for her to see. “I have to pass here or they won’t let me back to Japan.” “I get it,” she laughed weakly. “Plus, Sango is on vacation. She’s so excited to see you.” Kagome peered around his shoulders. “Where is she, anyway?” Miroku hooked his thumb to the closed door behind him, “Shower. She went for a run earlier.” “Darn. You tell her I said hi?” “Of course, Kagome.” Kagome slumped to the floor and it was the first time Miroku could recognize where she was. It was a dim closet full of boxes. There was a single dangling bulb from the ceiling. “Where are you, again?” “Uh…” Kagome looked behind her and rubbed the back of her head. “I can’t…really tell you.” Miroku raised an eyebrow suggestively, “Oh? Are you doing something naughty, Kagome?” Kagome cringed, “Maybe? I don’t really think so, but I don’t want to make anyone mad.” “Kagome, unless you are doing something illegal I’m not sure any of us would get mad at you.” He leaned back and put his feet up beside the laptop. “Seriously, where are you?” There was a pause. She folded her legs in to her chest. There was a sad look on her face, almost guilty even. She cleared her throat and looked away, resting her arms on her knees. “I am at Lord Sesshomaru’s summer estate.” Miroku blinked. “Where?” Kagome rolled her eyes and looked back at him, “I am at Lord Sesshomaru’s summer house.” She cleared her throat again and sighed, “He has a family history as old as time, so the Taishou clan had the relic. He said it was here, so he brought me here to find it.” “Why? I mean, why would this guy help you? Inuyasha has never said anything good about him.” Miroku folded his arms over his chest. There was a sense of protection and defensive flare rising out of him. “Tsuki struck a deal with him.” She ruffled her hair and was avoiding eye contact with him. “She said that in exchange for saving Rin-chan’s life he should save our lives and set Tsukifree.” Miroku huffed, “I guess that is fair…does he have any other motivation you think?” “I think he likes Tsuki,” Kagome mumbled. “He what?” “Miroku? Who are you talking to?” Sango called from behind the shower door. Kagome could see her silhouette. Kagome yelped. “OH god. Do NOT tell her where I am! You cannot.” “Okay, gees, okay,” Miroku leaned over his shoulder back towards Sango. “Just listening to the news, dear.” “Miroku!” she hissed at the screen. “Do not tell Inuyasha where I am.” “Kagome. He asks about you all the time. You haven’t talked to him in a while,” Miroku grumbled. “What am I going to do if he asks?” “I can’t talk to him live, he’ll know where I am. He’ll recognize this place, for sure.” Kagome clasped her hands over her head. “I am only going to be here until tomorrow, I am begging you.” Miroku sighed, “Hai, hai, I promise. But Kagome, I need to tell you something ---“ “I got to go! Don’t say anything. Bye!” Kagome slammed her computer shut, her image blurred on his screen. Miroku studied the image and saw the panic in her eyes. “Kagome…I found Koga.” Inuyasha was walking through the park on the phone. While he tried to call Kikyo, he found that, once again, her phone went straight to voicemail. He had knocked on her hotel door since she hadn’t signed a lease yet on the apartment he had showed her pictures of the night before. “Hey. Call me, okay? It’s not like I have anywhere else to be without you. Okay?” He slid his phone into his pocket and looked around. On the other side of the park, Inuyasha was face to face with hundreds of people running around. To his surprise he saw a young girl running down the street with a giant easel under her arm. Inuyasha couldn’t believe the similarity. Feeling curious and mostly bored he decided to follow the little girl. Her summer dress was yellow. She had long brown hair like Kagome used to have. It took a few blocks, but Inuyasha followed her until she was at an open atrium in the middle of a city building. Inuyasha looked around, “What is this place?” The little girl hopped on a park bench and set up her easel, pulling out a plastic bag filled with different pieces of colored pencils. Inuyasha watched as with complete diligence she lined up the various pieces in order to the rainbow. Almost instantly she began to draw. It wasn’t like Kagome, who studied something with extremely detail, the little girl just went at it. Inuyasha sat down beside the girl and watched her. She glanced at him once or twice but continued to draw, swapping out colors left and right, all the while tapping her foot to music that existed only in her head. Within a half an hour the little girl had sketched out an entire scene, different people of shapes and sizes wandering across her easel. The little girl stopped and turned to him, “Do you want something?” * [English] Inuyasha blushed, realizing he’d kind of been caught staring, “Uh…My friend is an artist.” * “Oh, that’s cool!” The girl smiled and turned the page over on her easel to another blank page. “I want to be in the MOMA!” * Inuyasha tilted his head, “What is a MOMA?” * The girl giggled, “Museum of Modern Art. All kinds of art are there. Does your friend want to be in a museum?” * Inuyasha shrugged, “I don’t know.” * “She is from Japan, like you? Japanese?”* “Yeah. She’s there. I’m here.”* The girl, no older than thirteen, looked back at her work and started drawing. “So you miss her?”* “So what if I do?” * The girl glanced at him before starting again, “Go to the MOMA and buy her an art book. I bet that will make her happy.”* Inuyasha chuckled, “An art book.” He stood up and stretched, “You think a girl would want diamonds and pearls, but she really would just want a stupid art book.” ------ Kagome had made it to the final box and opened it with a sigh of relief. “Well, if it’s not here, it won’t be anywhere.” You’re going to kill someone if it’s not there. Kagome huffed and wiped the sweat from her brow, “I won’t kill someone, it’d just be nice if this trip wasn’t an entire waste of time.” I don’t think it was a waste of time. “Of course you don’t,” Kagome growled. She pulled out another vase. What the hell does that mean? You’re just being a grump. “No, I’m not.” Kagome found something in a cylinder shaped out of the box. It was wrapped in tissue paper and newspaper. “He likes you. I bet you like him too.” Jealousy is an ugly trait of a human “I’m not jealous,” Kagome growled louder. She ripped at the wrapping and threw them to the floor. “You’re ridiculous.” I don’t know why you won’t admit that you miss him. Kagome looked at the relic and didn’t reply. This was it. This was the relic. Kagome could just feel the power that rippled through her hand. The gems glowed with a low red almost like a pulse. You should inform Sesshomaru-sama. Kagome threw up her free hand, “Why do I have to tell him anything? Am I dog? Is he my dad? You’re obsessed with him.” You don’t know what that relic will do Kagome rolled her eyes and slid the relic on her wrist. The cuff sparked on her wrist. “What…” The relic’s outer silver-rusted frame twisted and suddenly sank its edges into Kagome’s arm like miniaturized fangs. She let out a shriek as it began to glow brighter. The room was filled with a large gust of wind that filled the room. Kagome screamed once more and with a gust all of the wind sucked down into the relic. Her body crumpled but was caught just before it hit the floor. --------- Miroku opened the door to a local café and found Koga sitting at a table with his laptop open. He was wearing a black suit with silver linings. A cup of coffee steamed beside him. His ears flicked when the door bells rang. He looked up and smiled. Miroku, wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt held the door open as Sango slid inside. She wore a red sundress. “I can’t believe you’re here,” Sango told him gently, holding her arms open to him. Koga got up and gave Sango a quick hug and then stuck his hand out to Miroku to shake. “Thanks for coming.” Sango nodded, “I’m glad you let me come.” Koga pulled out a chair for her and then resumed his seat. With a few more clicks he closed the laptop and looked to them. “Do you two want anything, it’s all on me.” Sango shook her head and put her yellow clutch on the table, “I’m fine.” Miroku cleared his throat and glanced between Sango and Koga. “How have things been, Koga?” “As fine as they can be. Mother loves to keep me on a tight leash,” Koga chuckled, pushing his laptop into it’s bag. “But things are moving smoothly.” “So you’ll be returning to Japan soon then, I take it?” Miroku nodded, trying to keep everyone in check, not revealing too much. “The last time we spoke you said four weeks.” “So you’d be coming back right after we did?” Sango tried to conclude. “That’s not too long from now. Oh, you must be so excited!” Koga grinned, “That’s right. I’m not sure what specific day, but I’ll let you guys know when I’m back in Japan.” “You can leave work just like that?” Miroku asked slowly. “You don’t anyone who’s going to follow you, right?” “Oh come on Miroku, you make it sound like poor Koga has an army after him.” Sango chuckled and patted Miroku’s arm. Miroku grit his teeth. Koga shrugged, “Hey, if a demon’s following me I’ll know. It’s not like coming to America made me any weaker.” “What do you plan on doing when you get there?” Sango grinned, “See Kagome of course! Right?” “That was kind of the plan,” Koga chuckled. Miroku exhaled slowly, “I mean how do you plan on seeing her. You’re not just going to get off the plane and run right to her, are you?” “Miroku, you’re being a worry-wart,” Sango chided, bumping his shoulder lightly, “No, I’m not ---“ “Dude, you alright? You seem so uptight. I’m going to find Kagome and things will be just like before.” “Things can’t be like before!” Miroku shouted, turning heads in the café. No one could understand the Japanese they spoke, but they knew a fight when they heard one. Sango glared, “What the hell is your problem, Miroku?” Miroku leaned forward and looked Koga square in the eyes, “The last time Kagome saw you she was about to die, she was dying. You looked at her with fear in your eyes and you left her.” “Miroku, you know that’s not what ---“ Miroku didn’t give Koga a chance to finish. “If you get off that plane and bombard Kagome you will shock her, and not in a good way. If you rush this you’re going to blow up in your face, I guarantee it.” Sango looked at Miroku as he leaned back into his chair. She’d never seen Miroku so serious or menacing about anything. Why had he become so protective over Kagome when he’d been helping Koga all this time? She watched his fist curl on the table. “…Miroku?” Miroku turned to Sango and saw the confusion on her face. Equal to hers, the pleading on his face was worse. He looked like he desperately wanted to tell Sango something. “A better plan is all I’ma sking for.” “What do you want me to do, then?” Koga growled, glaring at the passerbys who were slowly learning to let go of the commotion. “She doesn’t go to school right now because it’s summer. What am I supposed to do, camp out at that stupid little café and hope she shows?” “Just give it some more thought, okay?” “Why not have him come to her showing?” Sango suggested quietly. Miroku turned to her and tried to withhold a glare. “Not a good idea.” “Why not? I can show up as a potential buyer for all of the Ookami buildings here in the United States. It’s not like I have to sign in or anything, right?” “Exactly! You can just watch and when it’s all over say hello to her.” “I could leave a bid on one of her pieces and set up a second meeting with her after!” Miroku hit his fist on the table, “Does no one listen to me? I said this wasn’t a good idea.” Both Sango and Koga jumped. “You’re going to invade Kagome’s most important event? Her art is all about her. You’re going to take that away from her.” “It’s going to be an even better night,” Koga jested. Miroku stood up and threw his hands up. “You know, I’ve been away from Kagome longer than you have, Koga. I still talk to her. I still worry about her. I know that her art is the only thing that wasn’t taken away from her.” Miroku looked at Sango, who looked baffled. “You know I’m right. I know you want to see Kagome, Koga. I know you want her to be happy but do me this favor and don’t do this to Kagome. Koga, just wait, even if it’s twenty four hours after her show, just wait.” ----- Miroku pulled open the door to the café and left. He flipped open his phone and held it to his ear. “Inuyasha? I need to talk to you. I don’t care where you are. You’re where? Fine. Stay there. I’m coming.” ----- Tsuki tossed her head to the left and slowly opened her eyes. To her surprise she found Sesshomaru sitting in a chair reading a book. As her eyes searched the room and realized she was in the bedroom instead of the storage room. Her head hurt tremendously. Tsuki watched as Sesshomaru turned a page. As if he sensed her watching, he looked up. “You’re awake.” “I feel like I was hit with a truck,” Tsuki groaned, slowly sitting up against the pillows. She waved her hand in the air, “I need a mirror.” “I assure your hair looks tussled. No mirror would deny that.” Tsuki chuckled, “Reassuring.” She ran her hand through her hair and stuck out her tongue. “I need a mirror, I assure you it is not about my looks.” Tsuki looked away and around the room, “Kagome?” Sesshomaru looked around the room, as if he expected to hear the voice too. His golden eyes studied her but said nothing. He leaned back on his chair and pulled a hand mirror out of the armoire beside him. He tossed it onto her bed. When Tsuki picked up the mirror the sheets fell, revealing the cuff on her wrist. Tsuki looked at it and shook her wrist. “It doesn’t even budge.” Sesshomaru nodded slowly, “It appears to be embedded into your flesh.” Tsuki looked at the mirror and saw her own reflection, nothing else. “Kagome is gone.” Sesshomaru betrayed nothing. “Was she last in control?” Tsuki nodded slowly, “She had found the relic and put it on. None of our research ever indicated the cuff would react that way.” She left the mirror on the side table atop Kagome’s laptop, not noticing the green glowing dot that indicated a message. “Rin was the one who heard you scream. I was outside.” Sesshomaru put the book down and tilted his head. “When she called me I came, you were already unconscious by then.” Tsuki nodded slowly and stared at her wrist. There were eight tiny fangs now buried deep in her skin holding the relic in place. “This is supposed to separate us.” “And?” “Instead she just seems to be gone.” Tsuki closed her eyes and leaned back on the pillows and sighed. “She has disappeared before,” Sesshomaru pointed out. He stood up slowly and moved to the bed, hovering over her just slightly. Tsuki opened her eyes and looked at him, studying him, slowly, “You did not hear her screams. They were agonizing. It sounded like she was in so much pain.” “Are you?” Tsuki smiled, “Doesn’t seem so bad when you’re around.” Sesshomaru smirked, leaned down, and kissed her gently. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
