Chapter 26 - Worries of Judgment
"What... What does that mean: the situation presented to you when you were trying to revive me?" Kagome asked.
Sesshoumaru glanced from her face to his brother's and back, seeing that Inuyasha was just as curious as the miko. That wasn't really a surprise. He had been wondering when one of them would ask him how this happened. Now, however, was not the time for him to explain. It wouldn't be a quick conversation and Kagome was already having trouble keeping her eyes open.
"Sleep now, my little miko. You are exhausted."
Though he was disappointed that his older brother didn't seem to want to answer her question, Inuyasha also knew that the taiyoukai was right. Kagome was beyond tired and fighting to stay awake. "Yeah, go to sleep. I'll carry you back."
"No," the miko whined. "Not yet. Let me sleep out here in the sun. I've been inside too long."
Inuyasha laughed, lovingly brushing his fingers through her bangs. "Fine, woman. You want to sleep in the sun, you can. I wouldn't mind being out here for a while longer, anyway."
Kagome turned her focus to Sesshoumaru, narrowing her eyes at him, though the effect wasn't what she intended as her lids drooped with the darkness of sleep calling to her. "You will explain what you meant, though, right?"
The taiyoukai smirked at her and leaned down to press his lips to hers. "Of course I will. Just not now. Sleep."
The miko yawned and curled onto her right side towards Inuyasha, a tired smile on her face, ignoring the slight discomfort of putting pressure on the claw wounds on her hip. "You guys just want me to stay naked," she said playfully.
"As if we need to encourage you to be naked, 'Gome," the hanyou teased. When she lifted her arm, wrapping her hand around his calf, he couldn't help but smile. She wanted to make sure he stayed close. She wanted to know he was there beside her and that knowledge warmed his heart. She loved him. She really and truly loved him, a hanyou, a creature that no one accepted, and no one would suffer the presence of. So many people had looked down on him with disgust, every one of them reinforcing the self-hatred he practically drowned in. He dared to hope when she came into his life, but he also knew better, had always known that what he wanted was impossible.
But it wasn't impossible, because the woman he loved accepted him just the way he was. This beautiful woman loved him back. She could have chosen only Sesshoumaru if she wanted, but she still wanted him, as well. With her last breath she declared that she loved them both, at a moment when nothing but the truth could have been floating through her mind. Inuyasha almost wished Kouga would turn up again so he could show that mangy wolf that Kagome chose him, and his so called claim was worthless. He wanted to rub it in the way the wolf always had when she protected him and kept them from fighting, or when he claimed that she would never want a hanyou.
Sure, he had to share her with his brother, but it was worth it to have her. Anything would be worth it to be able to hold his miko in his arms, to have her smile at him. The sex was just a plus. It was a wonderful plus that he never thought he would have the pleasure to experience, but he'd love her without it. He had, in fact, loved her without it. Just having her friendship had been a dream come true, a gift directly from the gods, and what he had with her now was miles beyond what he ever believed he could have.
His brother shifted, moving to sit behind Kagome, his thigh pressed to her back, the motion shaking him from his thoughts. He looked down, finding that the miko was already dead to the world, though her grip on his calf was still firm. Inuyasha turned his attention to his brother, a small smirk on his lips.
"You made her really happy." When Sesshoumaru merely lifted a brow at him, the hanyou shook his head. "She would never have complained if you didn't want pups with her, but she was born to be a mother. You've seen how she is with Shippo and your kid."
"I was unsure if she would desire pups with this Sesshoumaru," the taiyoukai confessed.
"Why would she not?" he asked incredulously.
"She takes something, some kind of medicine from her time that keeps her from becoming fertile. She was not taking it when I first began pursuing her, and she has never mentioned it to me."
"Then how do you even know about it?"
"Her scent is different. I have also overheard her speaking with the slayer about it."
"You were a creepy stalker dude when she couldn’t get away, weren't you?”
"I craved her presence, even if she was unaware that I was there. Can you say that you would not have done the same?"
Inuyasha shook his head. "No, but I still can't wrap my head around you pursuing her at all. I mean, she told me about it, how it all happened, but she also said she doesn't know why you wanted her."
The taiyoukai tilted his head back, staring at the bright blue sky, not even the faintest wisps of clouds daring to mar its perfection. "I do not like repeating myself. In fact, I find it slightly more offensive than having to explain my actions."
"But you're gonna do it anyway, right?" Sesshoumaru shot him a look, and Inuyasha had to fight down the desire to laugh.
"I will, but I will only do so once, so we will be waiting until Kagome is awake."
"Fine. Whatever. So, it sure as hell seems like she's gonna say yes, doesn't it?" The taiyoukai merely inclined his head, and Inuyasha snorted. "Not much for talking, eh? Well, then, you can listen. I've been thinking about this, and it's going to be really hard for her."
"Hard?" What did his little brother mean? She was going to be mated to two powerful males that would stop at nothing to make her happy. How could that be hard?
"I knew you wouldn't get it. When we go back, when the others find out... Well, Shippo will understand. Kitsune share mates, too. I bet he'll be surprised about who she chose, though. Miroku will just be a pervert about it, but Sango. Sango is..." The hanyou laughed. "When no one else was around, when we were in her time, Kagome told me that Sango's a prude."
"Prude?"
"I'm not gonna get more than one word at a time, am I? A prude... She's got very traditional views on sex, and the slightest mention of anything intimate turns her whole face bright red. Even if she knows about the whole demon sharing thing, which she should, being a slayer, there is no way she's going to just accept this. She's going to be shocked, and who the hell knows how Kaede will take it. I mean, the old woman wants Kagome to be happy, but this just isn't acceptable for humans. Only rich and powerful dudes get more than one woman. The idea of a woman having more than one man isn't even a thing. I'm afraid Sango will upset her. They're friends and all, and I like Sango, I do, but if she hurts her... I don't want Kagome losing her friends because of us, but it's a possibility.
"And then there's her family. In her era, girls her age are still in school. They have relationships, but nothing serious, and they sure as hell don't get married. Kagome said girls her age aren't even supposed to be having sex. Her grandfather isn't a fan of the idea of his granddaughter associating with demons. Her mother isn't like that. She likes me, but that doesn't mean she's just going to accept that her daughter is mated, let alone to two guys, and demons, at that.
"If she accepts this and mates us, Kagome risks losing just about everything that's important to her. I want you to know that. Yeah, she'll have us, but things are probably gonna be rough at first. We can't make that worse for her. We can't fight her battles for her. We can only be there when she needs us, and she will. And we can't fight each other, either. We're going to have to be a united front."
Sesshoumaru studied his brother slowly, appraisingly, before nodding. He hadn't expected Inuyasha to be so insightful. In truth, he didn't know the typically impulsive hanyou was capable of forethought, at all. He was right, though. He hadn't even considered how others might react to their mating, at least not on her end.
He spent a great deal of time planning just how things would go, how he would announce her as Lady of the West and Inuyasha as his brother and their father’s heir, as well as his second in command. He had decided how he would respond to the backlash that was sure to follow. Truly, it was to be expected. He was basically mating not only a human, but a hanyou, as well, and the other Lords would not be pleased. His people would likely question his choices, but he intended to allow no disrespect. Anyone who had a complaint would learn quickly that it was not his or her place to comment; that Sesshoumaru would do whatever he pleased. Who were they to question his judgment?
Kagome had expressed concern, early on, that she was worried how her friends would react, but explained that it was more the fact that she would have to admit her deceit than anything else. He wondered if she had given any thought to how she would explain their relationship to her family. The last thing he wanted was to be the cause of her sadness, and if they rejected them, it would taint their mating forever. This was going to require a great deal of thought and a discussion with their miko that would likely be rather uncomfortable.
"We will figure it out," Sesshoumaru said softly. "And we will be there for her. Kagome is not one to allow others to judge her. She is strong. No matter what comes, we will make it through, together."
Inuyasha nodded his agreement and both brothers fell silent, lost in thought. Time passed quickly and before either of them noticed, the sun was riding high in the sky. Midday had arrived, and Kagome stirred between them. A low moan caught both of their attention, and it wasn't long before her eyes opened.
"Have I mentioned how much I enjoy waking up between you two?" she asked softly. "I wish it could always be like this."
"Why can't it?" the hanyou inquired.
Kagome merely laughed. "Because when we're traveling, you never even close your eyes, let alone lie down. I just can't see you both sleeping with me at night. I figured you guys can take turns keeping watch, though, so that I'll always have someone to snuggle with."
"There's no reason we can't both lie down with you. Hell, now that I have the option, I want to take advantage of every opportunity to touch you. I can keep watch with you in my arms. So, I got a question, 'Gome."
"Hmm?"
"Why haven't you gotten pregnant already?" The hanyou smirked as he noticed Sesshoumaru's minute scowl at his inquiry. While his brother had already told him why, Inuyasha was more curious about the how, and he knew, from the taiyoukai's tone earlier, that Sesshoumaru wanted to understand it better, as well.
"I'm on birth control," she replied easily. "It's medicine, an injection, that I get every three months that keeps me from ovulating, so there's no egg for your sperm to fertilize." Though she knew that most of what she just said likely went over both of their heads, she didn't bother to try to explain further.
"You were not taking this medication when I first began approaching you," Sesshoumaru said, figuring that he might as well try to get answers to his questions now that the topic had been raised.
"No. I didn't get it until after things got... things got more than just friendly and... I didn't start it until after we started kissing, after I decided that I could see you if I wanted to. I wasn't sure what was going to happen between us. I had an idea of where it might lead, so I figured I'd be proactive. It takes a while to take effect, and if I hadn't done it early the way I did, we would have had to use some other kind of protection."
"Like what?" Inuyasha asked with interest.
"Condoms." Realizing they wouldn't have a clue, the miko tried to explain it in the simplest of terms. "A condom is something that you put over your penis that keeps your semen from getting inside me. No semen, no fertilization, no pregnancy."
"Were you that afraid of carrying my pups?" Sesshoumaru asked with his tone soft and almost hesitant.
Kagome fought down the desire to roll her eyes, and she tried to sit up, discovering, as she attempted to move, that she was quite sore. She let out a little whimper of discomfort, and the taiyoukai shifted, scooping her into his arms so that he could see her face. She gave away so much of her thoughts through her eyes, and he needed to know what was going on in her head.
"That had nothing to do with it," she replied, gazing into his golden orbs and seeing insecurity there that seemed so out of place. "I wasn't afraid. I wanted to be able to be with you without worrying about getting pregnant. Now is so not the time for babies. Once the jewel is whole and Naraku is dead, sure, but not before then." It took a moment, but eventually the concern in his eyes faded away, and he looked more like the confident youkai she loved.
Seeing Kagome and his brother cuddling, Inuyasha smiled and stared off into the distance, his mind running wild thinking about the future, how they would make things work, when something dawned on him. "Kagome? Didn't you say that your mom always goes to the doctor with you?"
"Yeah, why?" the miko asked while pressing her forehead against the side of Sesshoumaru's throat while his fingers delicately worked through the snarls in her hair.
"So, does that mean she knows about this birth control medicine?"
"Yeah," she replied quietly, enjoying the taiyoukai's gentle touch. "She does."
The hanyou's eyes narrowed in confusion. "But then, does that mean that she knows you're having sex?"
Kagome pulled back to look at Inuyasha as she answered, making sure not to disturb Sesshoumaru's task. She knew her hair had to be in a mess of knots from their rough handling, and she was glad she wouldn't have to try to brush it out, ripping out half her hair in the process. "Well, I wasn't having sex when I first got it, but yes, my mother knows I'm sexually active. Why are you so interested in this?"
"So, then, does she know about Sesshoumaru, or does she think you're with me?"
"She knows about Sesshoumaru. I couldn't lie to her. I was already feeling guilty enough, lying to everyone else about him. Besides, I needed her to know the truth so that she could cover for me if she needed to."
"Cover for you? You mean your mother knew you were sneaking around seeing my brother behind my back?" His tone didn't contain the anger Kagome might have expected to hear at such a revelation. It was more shock and confusion. "She never treated me any differently."
"No, I don't expect she would. She knew how torn I was, how hard it was. She knows I never stopped loving you. No matter what you said or did, I never stopped loving you for a second. It was all so confusing."
Guilt washed through the hanyou at Kagome's words, as he remembered the many times he hurt her without thinking and all the times he ran off to see Kikyo when he should have stayed with her and the rest of their pack. "I... I'm sorry," he said in a whisper.
"I know, and I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have lied to you, but I didn't know what else to do. It felt like I was being torn in half. I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that I can have you both, because I don't think I could have chosen. It would have ripped me apart."
"So, how is she going to react to this?" Inuyasha asked, gesturing between himself and his brother.
"I really don't know," the miko replied honestly. "It's definitely weird enough to shock her, but in the end, all she wants is for me to be happy. She'll probably accept it, though she might be a little disappointed."
"Disappointed?" Sesshoumaru repeated, his hold tightening around her at the thought that her family might disapprove of their mating.
"Yeah. I mean, I'm not getting married. She's going to miss out on seeing me walk down the aisle, but it's not like we could actually have a wedding. Sesshoumaru can't make it through the well, so I'd only be marrying one of you, which would just feel wrong, and we couldn't have any guests, not without freaking people out. I'm not even old enough to get married in my era without lots of questions and assumptions. I think she always expected me to stay here in this time, though, once we finish the jewel, so she might be fine."
"What about the old man?" Inuyasha was rather relieved to hear that Kagome expected her mother to be accepting, despite their atypical relationship, at least so far as humans were concerned. A dual mating was common among canine youkai, but considering that demons didn't even exist in the future, there was no way her family would know that.
"He'll be fine. I know he picks on you, but he does like you, Inuyasha, honestly. It's just... You've never been playfully teased that way before, so you don't understand that he's kidding, and it's not malicious. I don't think he even realizes that you think he doesn't like you. I tried explaining, but you know how pig headed he can be."
"You... You're not worried about this at all, are you? About how they'll react?"
Kagome shook her head. "Nope. I'm tired of worrying about what other people might think. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be happy and you two make me happy. If some people can't handle that, oh well. Let them judge. It won't change a thing. The most important people will be fine and that's all that matters."
"What the hell does that mean: the most important people?"
The miko grinned. "Mama, of course. And Shippo is cool with Sesshoumaru."
"The runt knows about this?" the hanyou asked in shock.
"Yeah, I couldn't lie to him. He's my kid. Besides, I couldn't have gotten away with it if I tried. I hold him. He sleeps with me. He noticed a change in my scent that I guess you couldn't pick up, but mostly, he figured out that something was going on because my mood changed. I seemed happier, because I was, and I guess I didn't react as badly as I had before when you went to Kikyo. He helped me a lot with the guilt, reminding me that I had the right to be happy when I really needed to hear it.
"Shippo actually approves of Sesshoumaru. He told me he's a great choice, though neither of us thought for a moment that you'd actually want to mate me," she said with a small smile, leaning in closer to the taiyoukai, resting her temple over his heart.
"I was unaware of just how strongly I felt for you until the moment Inuyasha challenged me for you. Before then, I hadn't spent much time thinking of the future, except for the many hours spent planning when and how you could sneak away to be with me," Sesshoumaru confessed, his tone low as his lips brushed her forehead with every word. "You kept my mind quite occupied."
Inuyasha couldn't help but laugh at his older brother's final comment. "Yeah, she's good at that. Damned distracting is what you are, woman," the hanyou teased. He focused once more on Sesshoumaru's face, a smirk on his lips. "You ever carry her while trying to run? Hmm," he hummed happily. "Running suddenly gets a lot more difficult when you're hard as hell. And then there's the chafing."
Both brothers smiled at the sound of Kagome's melodic laughter as she turned to see Inuyasha. "Is it now? And chafing? That sounds terribly painful." Her tone was playful, overflowing with happiness inspired by the brothers having a pleasant conversation and almost joking with each other. The hope building up inside her grew exponentially at their easy companionship.
"It ain't great. I can tell you that." A thought struck the hanyou and his smile turned wicked. "You know, I wasn't going to see Kikyo every time I left. Not even half the time, really."
She could see the amusement dancing in his eyes, and so she played along. "Oh?"
"Well, I couldn't beat off in the middle of camp, now, could I?"
Kagome laughed again, this time accompanied by the low, sexy sound of Sesshoumaru's chuckle.
"You have any idea how much you turn me on, 'Gome?"
The miko grinned. "I'm just glad you're comfortable talking about it." When he looked slightly confused, she continued. "Maybe now the next time I want to see it, you won't make such a big deal."
"What in the hell is it about jacking off that makes you want to watch?" Inuyasha asked incredulously.
"I just think it's sexy. And I kind of did know that, Inu."
"Know what?"
"That you weren't always going to Kikyo. Shippo would tell me if you stayed close to camp. I had my suspicions, though I never thought it was me you were thinking about."
"Always you, woman." The hanyou laughed softly. "So the runt tattled on me, eh? Guess I shouldn't be surprised."
Suddenly turning serious, Kagome locked eyes with Inuyasha. "You're going to have to be nice to Shippo. No more bullying him, no matter what he says. He's fine with Sesshoumaru, but he decided you were bad for me a long time ago. I guess he got tired of hearing me cry. He knows how I still feel about you. It gets me an eye roll every time I mention it. He thinks it's his job, as my son, to protect me. He'll accept it, of course. It's not like it can be changed once it's done, but he's probably not going to be very happy at first."
"Did you just agree to be our mate?" Sesshoumaru asked softly. Though indirectly, it sure as hell sounded like that was what she said.
The miko sighed softly. "No. I haven't made my decision yet." It wasn't really a lie, but it wasn't exactly the whole truth either. She wanted to. Oh, how she wanted to say yes, and the likelihood of her being able to do so seemed to be growing all the time. There were more and more reasons to believe they could make this confusing mess of a relationship work, and there hadn't been a single reason to think otherwise in days.
Though they were disappointed, neither brother voiced that emotion. It was obvious that she was still somewhat conflicted, and that was entirely their faults. They had never been friendly before she came between them. In truth, they had been enemies. She was right to be concerned about their ability to get along, but it was getting easier and easier for each brother to comfortably be in the presence of the other, both in sexual and non-sexual situations. Neither doubted for a moment that issues would arise, but they would find a way to get through any disagreements without bloodshed and, hopefully, without any yelling or name-calling, as well.
She could feel the heaviness that had descended upon both her men, and her heart ached at having upset them. Hoping to offer a distraction, Kagome sighed softly. "We should probably head back before I end up with a sunburn. I really need a bath. I'm covered in dried sweat and I've got to smell."
"You do," Sesshoumaru agreed in a thick, husky tone. "You smell wonderful."
