Chapter 25: Battle Between Poisons
(A/N: It took me so long to come up with a workable solution for this segment, but I think this works, and from here on, I can summarize much of the Band of Seven encounters, only focusing on a few specific scenes. Your patience will pay off soon.)
'Stupid, arrogant dog, pompous demon, conceited lord,' Kagome ranted to herself on her trek back to her companions. 'Who does he think he is telling me he'll kill me once my usefulness is gone? Like I'd ever let that happen. Its not like I've harmed him in any way, and he was the one who tried to kill me simply for pulling Tessaiga when he couldn't. He has issues.'
"Kagome, you're back," Miroku commented with confusion in his voice. He thought she would have been gone for much longer. Sesshomaru did not seem the type to be a "minute man," err demon.
"Of course, I'm back," she answered, just as confused at his tone as he was over her too brief absence. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Oh, no reason," he rubbed the back of his head with a goofy grin. She just rolled her eyes at him and her attention was abruptly diverted to Inuyasha giving her the third degree.
"What the hell was that all about, why would you ever walk off with that Bastard, and what the fuck did he want from you?" his plethora of curse words and hostile insinuations caused a muscular tick in her temple.
"Sit! He just wanted to exchange info on Naraku," she answered truthfully after punishing Inuyasha for the foul word.
"Why couldn't you have just spoken with him here instead?" Sango asked, not understanding the need for privacy either.
"Maybe he was tired of conversing with someone who screams at him," Kagome looked pointedly at Inuyasha. "He did say he wasn't feeling magnanimous today, not that you can really tell when he is, but it was probably the most peaceable solution." Inuyasha just crossed his arms and Miroku supplied to himself that the demon lord must find the priestess far more "tolerable."
Sesshomaru had noticed his ward moving around the area and sought her out. He found that Rin had managed to collect the antidote for Jaken on her own. Flying back to the imp side by side, she explained how she rode Ah-Un up the cliff's side and retrieved the berries and had to get them back to Master Jaken quickly. Her feats showed a phenomenal amount of self-reliance, essentially completing his next task for him and without needing to be told. He was impressed.
(AN: I've always thought this would have been much smarter on her part, but understood the episode's needed the emotional aspect of desperation and Sesshomaru saving her.)
Staring into the crackling fire, Kagome was left alone in camp long enough to let her mind wander. Sesshomaru's words echoed in her mind, "You protect his location, and thus protect him. I think you care about him, maybe even love him." 'But, I'd protect any of my friends, right? That doesn't mean I love him,' she rationalized. 'I know I've been lying to my friends about him, but for what reason. Is it to shelter myself from their judgments and keep this twisted "relationship" going longer out of some selfish desire, or to protect him from their wrath?' she sighed aloud, she knew that answer, as much as she didn't want to admit it of herself, it was for both reasons, meaning she did have some selfishness in her. 'I don't want him hurt, but I also don't want to be found out, lying meets both ends. I'm too much of a coward to face them about this.' Her head hung over her knees, arms wrapped around them tightly. 'I don't want to think about the bad things this might bring, but as much as I want to just bring peace, I might lose one or the other.' She let her mind bring forth two images, one of her friends turning away from her harshly, thinking she betrayed them, and it hurt, but when she brought forth the second image, of Naraku hurt, or even… killed… 'Would I mourn, would I cry for him?' She didn't need to answer this with words, for tears spilled over unbidden at the mere false image. Her chest clenched painfully and she quickly rid her mind of such horrors before she could full on bawl her eyes out. Breathing heavily and shaking her head, she regained herself. 'Does this really mean that I love Naraku? I must, Sesshomaru was right. How could such a heartless demon know so much about love?'
Her heart sank at her next realization, 'The chances that Naraku cares about me in the same way are nearly impossible. He only expressed a desire for my body. Love, completely out of the question.' It had to be only one sided. But, so had her feelings been towards Inuyasha, and it was enough to keep her by his side, even after much more heartache than Naraku had ever caused her. 'It's a very specific pain, heartache. Naraku may have killed thousands, but he never tormented my heart. I just hope this is not a perverse scheme to do so.'
"I brought more firewood," Shippo chimed as he pranced into camp. "Is Inuyasha still off sulking?" Kagome nodded and Shippo sighed at the childish behavior of their supposed leader. Ever since Kagome came back from talking to Sesshomaru, he'd been in a bad mood and eventually just took off.
'Miroku and Sango must still be gathering wood and berries,' Kagome assumed. She needed to go for a walk to clear her head; all this internal turmoil was getting to her.

If he was human, this room would be near intolerable, but being reborn, the scalding, dry heat was barely even noticeable. "How is it coming, Renkotsu?" Bankotsu asked the man as he melted a pot of liquid metals. All this forging stuff went over his head; he had no need for such advance technology.
"It will take a few more days, Big Brother," the older man responded with a forced respect.
"That should work; they are getting close. I dispatched Jakotsu and Mukotsu to slow them down and keep an eye out for Suikotsu and Kyokotsu," Bankotsu informed.
"Still no sign of them?" he asked only slightly concerned. Other's well-being, even that of comrades, only registered to him as far as their usefulness went.
"None. But I have received word of where Banryu might be. I'm going to go verify the rumors," he turned and waved. "When you are done with Ginkotsu, your orders are to meet up with Jakotsu and Mukotsu. I'll leave a few of these bugs with you if you need to send a message," Bankotsu spoke over his shoulder on his way out.
"Yes, Big Brother," Renkotsu again answered as was expected of him, all the while thinking, 'So arrogant; little punk.'
Bankotsu walked out of the cave with a heavy cloud over his head. Renkotsu thought he was so smart, and he was, but that can't replace instinct. Bankotsu could feel the falsity in the man.
Waiting for him on a branch was an insect, it buzzed at him so he went over to it to see it held a jewel shard. It was Kyokotsu's jewel shard, meaning the giant man had perished. Giving a rare, sad sigh, Bankotsu said, "Too bad. He should have waited."
Kagome was stumbling around, only watching where she was going enough to not fall over, as she tried to get her mind off of her budding feelings for Naraku and dread at her friends finding out, when she heard talking. Curiosity got the better of her and she moved closer.
"I just can't believe it, Miroku," Sango's voiced sounded, "Kagome and-"
"Yes, I know, Sango, it does seem rather impossible," the monk agreed.
'Oh no, they don't know, do they?' Kagome hid behind a tree to listen, trembling at the fear she was just trying to run from, catching up so quickly.
"Why wouldn't she tell me, I thought we were close enough that we told each other everything?" Sango seemed to be upset, but then, can you blame her. She just found out about Kagome and Naraku, her best friend and her worst enemy. Kagome covered her mouth with a hand to keep from making any noise, namely a pained whimper.
"She must have her reasons. Perhaps she was worried about our reactions if her relations got out," Miroku explained, surprising their unknown eavesdropper with his understanding. Kagome expected him to be just as upset, since Naraku had cursed his family and caused his predecessor's deaths.
"Maybe, I can certainly see your point there," Sango reluctantly agreed.
'What do I do? Do I come out and tell them, admit my actions? Or do I run away? If I'm quiet they won't hear me,' Kagome ran through her options.
"It is not all that bad of a choice either," Miroku pointed out, derailing Kagome's thoughts of fleeing.
"I guess, better than Kouga, at least," Sango agreed.
'What! They actually think Naraku is better than Kouga?' Kagome was completely dumbfounded as they lightly laughed together.
"That is certainly true," Miroku chuckled. "I wonder how she managed to catch the interest of one such as he though."
"No clue," Sango shared in his cluelessness at how this unlikely relationship came about, "the human-hating demon lord, Sesshomaru, and the human miko, Kagome, what a pair that is." Miroku nodded in agreement.
'Sesshomaru! They think I'm with Sesshomaru? How did that come about? I was only talking to him for a few minutes,' Kagome replayed all their encounters and found no reason for this assumption.
"We shouldn't tell Inuyasha, yet," Miroku added as Kagome was walking away quietly, having her fears put to rest, and a new topic to think on.
"Agreed," Sango held no objections, "he'd completely berserk on her."
(A/N: Prior to episode 103: The Band of Seven, Resurrected)
"So, we are to simply keep these people occupied?" Mukotsu asked Jakotsu, since the feminine, but deadly, man was the one given their instructions.
"Yes, that's what Big Brother said," Jakotsu mumbled, bored of talking to the ugly little midget. He had his mind on better things. "I am to keep Inuyasha busy. Ahh, I can't wait to see what he looks like."
"And what of the others? You said Big Brother mentioned something about the young maiden?" Mukotsu was slipping into his own deranged desires.
Jakotsu tried to remember exactly what their orders were but could barely get passed the thought of his opponent.
Flashback
"Jakotsu, you are not to kill them, and not a hand should be laid on the priestess," Bankotsu explained the orders he had just received.
"But why?" he asked, never having had to hold back in the past.
"I'm not sure, that's what the demon wants or something," Bankotsu shrugged it off. He had his suspicions, but wasn't exactly sure what Naraku's interest in the priestess was.
End flashback
The memory not coming in clear, Jakotsu just went with his own opinions, "Eh, who cares about women. They are yours to deal with."
A sick chuckle bubbled out of Mukotsu, "Perfect."
Jakotsu continued walking down the road, his eyes closed and his mind in fantasyland, as Mukotsu cut off into the forest, preferring a stealthy approach.
(A/N: Spoiler Alert! Episode 104: The Stealthy Poison Master. This scene has always made me a little sick to my stomach, and I'm making it even more graphic, so, be warned. No explicit content, but read at own discretion.)
With Inuyasha off hunting down Jakotsu, Kagome cycled into a nearby town to get some water. The area had been saturated with poison, but she hadn't noticed with her purity keeping her protected, until she came upon a dead woman leaning against the well. Suddenly her senses went into overdrive, screaming danger, but she was not fast enough and was paralyzed by a poisonous gas.
"Don't be afraid, I don't intend to kill you. No, my pretty," the sick sounding assailant cooed, "this is my special toxin that will paralyze your body, but your mind will remain quite alert. Good thing too, for I want you completely aware as I enjoy you."
Shippo, Sango, and Miroku's attempts to save her had no effect. And she had soon been dragged into an empty hut, not even able to express her despair at the possibility that her friends had just been disintegrated by the poison.
"Now then, Kagome, the intruders are gone. It's just you and me now." His revolting laugh made her want to purge her stomach; it was grotesque. She lay on the floor trying to get her limbs to move, her head, anything. She had to get out of here. "We are surrounded by a barrier of poisonous gas. No on, can disturb us. My, what a rare beauty," he continued his one-sided conversation with the muted girl, "I'm so fortunate to have gotten my hands on such a pretty girl."
His grimy fingers on her chin made her want to retch, but her body couldn't even do that. It could feel everything, but move nothing! 'What is he going to do to me, I don't even want to think about it! Someone help me, Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Naraku, Kouga, Anyone!' her mind panicked.
"You see, believe it or not, there are some who find me unattractive," he loosened his mouth cover to show a grotesque site of infection riddled blisters, cracked and bleeding skin, and decay and rot. (A/N: I'm rationalizing that the poison he samples to gain immunity to it would have the same effect as hard drugs.) "First, I think I'll see what that pretty little mouth can do to hard flesh; those lips look so tantalizingly soft. Then, I'll see what you are hiding under that tiny kimono. I bet you are pure, untouched, and I shall be your first." He described his fantasy, his desires, unaware of the falsity. Chuckling again, he reached for her, tugging at her clothes and trying to figure out how to remove the strange garments. "I have my faults, but I'll make sure you enjoy what I do to you. Try to keep up." He finally got her blouse to pop open, the buttons slipping out of their holes, and he pulled it up exposing her belly. His dirty, calloused hand rubbed at the smooth skin there as the other kept trying to get the shirt off her. He didn't seem to be strong enough to rip it.
'If only I could get ahold of that sacred jewel shard,' Kagome was thinking on how to get out of this situation, but her body still would not move. She felt him get the shirt up past her breasts and started tugging on her bra beneath. 'Let go of me! Stop touching me you creep!' Her panic became more insistent, but there was nothing she could do but distress herself out further.
"Such a fine girl; such a fine girl, indeed," he commented on her abundant cleavage before being interrupted when Sango and Miroku crashed in through the ceiling on Kirara. He let go of her and stood, angry and ready to fight. The poison he used dropped them all to the floor, at first glance they would appear dead.
Naraku opened his eyes slowly, detecting a gaze upon his form. Standing before him as he lay in pieces, Kanna glowed with a soft luminescence. She held her mirror and waited to be addressed. "What is it, Kanna?" his voice was strained from his difficult reconstruction. She said nothing but turned the mirror to show him the scene of Kagome and the other two humans lying motionless. Were they dead?
He was briefly overcome with a trembling, horrible sensation until Kanna spoke, "They will live, if you save them." Pushing the emotions that threaten to emerge on days like this aside, his mind began spinning furiously to decide on a solution. Those mercenaries were proving to be far too defiant. They were only to keep those who hunted him from getting too close to the mountain, not kill them. Yet here he was, looking through Kanna's mirror, confined in the saturated depths of the mountain's core, at the nearly dead bodies of his adversaries and his… paramour. This would not do, he needed them alive, or all of his hard work would be erased. They held too much anguish, too much turmoil in their hearts to let them die. They were of much better use alive, so they could taint the jewel further. Taint it with their pain and hatred. And Kagome, she would be not be taken from him so easily! He didn't take the time to discern his reasons for wanting her, there was no time and he simply acted. Using his various methods of influence scattered about, he made inventory of all their locations in proximity to this deathly scene and sent out orders to repair this hindrance.
Sesshomaru had been following these various scents, that of Naraku's servants, the Siamyosho and Kohaku, on his trek towards Mt. Hakurei. He was not absolutely sure if that be were Naraku lay hidden, only that that was where the girl believed him to be. Naraku could have easily lied to her about his location and so the perceptive demon lord was keeping his senses open to the entirety of the surrounding area. Lately, the scent of the boy, Kohaku, had been getting nearer, and in the last few minutes, it seemed to constantly be just beyond the next tree. He followed, fully aware it may be a trap, seeing as he felt like he was being lured in this direction. Before long, the bitter scent of poison tickled his senses, and leaving Rin behind under the protection of Ah-Uh, he proceeded towards the individuals engulfed within. Inuyasha's wench, or rather, Naraku's wench, may have more information on his whereabouts.
Naraku continued to watch with trepidation as the pieces of this puzzle played out, Kagome overcame the poison, if only for a second, and tried to slay the undead Mukotsu. Naraku kept him weakened, using the jewel in his neck, but his strike was still enough to knock the girl to the ground when she missed her target. He cared not for the fool's blubbering, but when his hands began constricting and shaking Kagome by the throat, his anger exploded. If he had not been restricted here, he would have rushed to her side and tortured the fool for even daring to look upon her. He would make him die one agonizing death after the other.
His puppet could not make it in time to save her, but as rare as his luck was, it struck, and Sesshomaru proved to be her savior this time.
Kagome only saw the glimpse of silver hair and called out, "Inuyasha," relieved that he had made it in time, but it was not the one she thought. 'Sesshomaru? He saved me? Is it only because he still thinks I'm useful?'
'What's going on? I thought our only opponents would be Kouga of the demon wolf tribe, or Inuyasha and his group,' Mukotsu questioned frantically. Naraku had not told them about Sesshomaru, figuring if the phantoms proved too difficult for Inuyasha, he could always rely on Sesshomaru to finish them off.
"Tell me, is Inuyasha here?" Sesshomaru asked casually. He could tell the girl could not speak and would not waste breath on questioning her. The foolish midget refused to answer, and only continued to try and fight, running outside and using his weak poisons on a very poisonous demon.
Sesshomaru had been the closest; Inuyasha was off hunting down Jakotsu, and each of his servants would have been too late either. It was the best bet, so he lured him to the area, drifting scents on the wind far from their owner's location. Simultaneously, his puppet, the one smelling of flowers and foreign to all who hunted him, finally closed in on the location as Sesshomaru was preoccupied with the poison nuisance. Leaping down from the hole in the ceiling, he acted quickly and let three tendrils of miasma seep into each of their gaped mouths. It would do his will; it would seek out the lesser poison and neutralize it, as well as send them into a deep, healing sleep. Stronger than her companions, Kagome stirred as she was given the dosage and looked up to see Naraku! Her eyes grew wide, and she went to gasp out his name until he gestured to keep quiet. The time it took her to blink her weighted eyes, he was gone, and an explosion sounded outside as her eyes closed again, fighting against the exhaustion.
Naraku had never expected her state to affect him so, and although emotions did not show on his puppets, deep within the mountain's cave, where Naraku controlled the puppet from his hidden lair, he was trembling with rage. Sesshomaru had dispatched the cretin; otherwise Naraku would have taken and tortured the mercenary. He couldn't keep these feelings of apprehension and anger locked away. The Band of Seven was only to keep his enemies busy, but now, Kagome had been placed in harm's way due to their disobedience. He was far more concerned for her safety than he had been in the past. He would need to keep a much closer eye on her or find some way to ensure her safety. The sight of her displaced clothing, the slime that had tried to violate her, they drew a violent roar from his throat. His rage tumbled out, an earthquake rumbled the mountain that was slowly becoming one with Naraku's body, drawing the attention of the delicate senses of Sesshomaru. 'The mountain moved. Naraku may very well be hiding there after all.' Still staring off towards the movement, keeping his senses trained to detect if it was a natural, or unnatural quake, Inuyasha began accusing him of harming the humans.
"No," Kagome struggled, "Its not what it looks like. Sesshomaru saved us."
"No, I didn't save you," He countered, and proceeded to interrogate his brother. Inuyasha was too concerned for Kagome and the others to fight and answered with whatever he knew, explaining the Band of Seven and their role. By this point, Sango and Miroku were in a comatose sleep, and Kagome used her last ounce of strength to reassure Inuyasha before drifting off herself. She could feel Naraku's "touch" inside her, it was strange, but she knew, somehow, that she would be okay. They all would.
"I knew it, I should have stayed with her," Inuyasha growled out his frustration at himself. 'Its my fault that she got hurt.'
Still lingering in the nearby forest, Naraku heard it all through his puppet, 'Yes, you should have, Inuyasha.'
(A/N: I'm working on writing Chapter 32, and have decided to make that one chapter, or half of that chapter, a series of drabbles just for a change of pace and out of curiosity to try something else. I request any and all prompts, from normal to absurd, or ideas for scenes that can take place at Naraku's castle between him and Kagome. I want to challenge myself for this little exercise since I'm so far ahead in this story. The more prompts I get, the longer I can make this chapter. Hint, hint. Send multiple random words even, I'm not picky, lol.)
