InuYasha watched as his beautiful Kagome left the bed and went to the bathroom. The last two weeks since getting her back had been like a dream that he never wanted to wake from. Just being with her and their son and daughter, being a family was so unfamiliar to him, but in the best way. He looked over at his pups who were sleeping in their cradle and felt a sense of contentment like no other he had ever known. Unfortunately it was disrupted but a pulse of unfamiliar power coming from the bathroom. He jumped up and raced towards the open door, only to be repelled.
He could see Kagome inside awash in a pink light that seemed to emanate from something she held in her hand. “Kagome! Shit, Kagome are you okay?”
She didn’t move, didn’t so much as blink and he growled. He stretched out his hand and found himself still unable to reach her. Behind him he heard his son start to fuss, most likely having been disturbed by both the force of whatever power it was that had ahold of Kagome and his growling. He had never been more torn in his life as his son began to wail and he forced himself to act as Kagome would want.
He turned to go towards the cradle when the light around her died. She swayed on her feet and he dove forward catching her just before she hit the floor. He carried back over to the bed and laid her down gently, assuring himself that she seemed and smelled okay even if she wasn’t unconscious. He looked to the cradle to find his daughter and son snuggled up together and once again sleeping.
He climbed into bed beside Kagome and pressed his nose to her throat. Her scent gave him no indication that she was doing anything other than sleeping. He looked her over and realized she held something tightly in her hand. He could feel the power of it, dark and dangerous, and it tried to entice his youkai with whispers of blood and of power, but he ignored it. The only thing he cared about was whether or not Kagome was going to be okay.
“InuYasha,” she breathed as she started to stir.
“I’m here, Kagome,” he said as he looked down at her brushing the hair back from her face. “What is it? What happened? I couldn’t get to you.”
She circled her arms around him and hugged him fiercely. He lifted her against him sitting up and holding her back just as tightly. She was trembling and clearly needed him to comfort her. He knew she would tell him what had happened once she had calmed. He ran his fingers through her hair and made soothing sounds until she was finally able to get herself back under control.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “It was just too much.”
“Shhh, it’s okay,” he told her. “Everyone loses it sometimes and after what you’ve been through… No one can be strong all the time and that’s why I’m here. Can you tell me now what happened?”
She nodded and moved to sit beside him. She lifted her hand and showed him what she was holding, and again is called to him, whispering to his youkai, but as Kagome’s reiki expanded the voice died. The orb in her hand lightened until it was nearly a pure white.
“This is the Shikon no Tama,” she said quietly. “Kazuki had it in his hand when he was born. I didn’t have time to worry about what it was then, but when I picked it up today I had a vision. Kikyou, or the part of her that is in me spoke to me because I am her reincarnation and you, you are his.”
He blinked. “You’re sure?”
Kagome nodded. “Kikyou shared with me much of her memories and I could never mistake the warmth of your youki or the feeling of your soul. You are him and I am her, reborn, given a second chance. Both of us have lived other lives, learning growing so that we would be ready and now we are. The jewel that was burned with her body, held in the afterlife has now returned born again inside me, lying dormant all this time.”
“Shit, so did it happen, like the scroll from Kaede said?” he questioned.
“Yes, oh InuYasha it was so heartbreaking,” Kagome told him fighting back more tears. “She really did love him.”
He took her hand in his. “Was that all? Did she say anything about that bastard Naraku and what we are supposed to do?”
“I have to find a way to purify the jewel completely so that it ceases to exist,” she replied. “I am certain I read something in some of the older scrolls about making the right wish. I’ll have to start looking. Until then I have to keep it safe and as pure as possible, and above all else I can’t let Naraku get his hands on it.”
She moved into his lap and rubbed her nose against the underside of his chin and then kissed him along his jaw. He growled quietly and tangled his hand in her hair, pulling her head back so that he could take his turn bestowing loving affection on the column of her throat.
“InuYasha, there’s something else,” she said.
He drew back and looked at her. “Whatever it is, you can tell me.”
“I know,” she assured him. “I just wish I didn’t have to. Kikyou she begged me not to make the same mistakes as she did, and Shiori she told me that to defeat Naraku we have to be united not just in mind and in body but in spirit.” She paused and looked up at him, cradling his face in her hand. “I love you with all that I am and I have dreamed often of the day when we would decide to tie ourselves together, never to be parted. It isn’t right or how I wanted it to be, but I have to ask you to make me your mate soon, before I am forced to appear before my people.”
Of all the things she could have said that she would ask him to make her his mate had not even entered his mind. It wasn’t as if he was opposed to the idea though her recent birth meant that they would both have to endure what would be the ever increasing desire to be intimate for a good long while. His only hesitation would come from the same thing that bothered her so, that they felt as though they were being pushed towards something that should be their choice entirely.
“I know it isn’t fair,” Kagome said gently. “If I wasn’t so certain that it was the only way, our only chance, I never would have asked this of you. Please, believe that.”
“Shit, I do believe you,” he told her. “And I’ll do. I’ll do it right this fucking minute if you ask me to, but I hate that fate or whatever is pushing us towards this. If you say this is what we need to do so that our pups one miko and one hanyou never have to know they are supposed to be on opposite sides of a war that never should have happened then I believe you and will do whatever it takes to make that happen.”
She smiled softly at him. “There is so much good in you. I feel sorry for anyone who can’t see it and however it happens I’ll consider myself the luckiest woman in the world to be your mate.”
“Keh, I’m the lucky one,” he said. “So how long do we have?”
“A couple weeks at most,” she replied. “No one will have a hard time believing that it is taking me a while to recover from the birth considering the circumstances, but it will be expected that I present them by the time they are a month old.”
“Kagome, I mean what I said, I will make you mate whenever you want, and I don’t want you to take this wrong, but would you mind if we had Shiori come over and see what she thinks?” he asked. “I just don’t want to risk doing the wrong thing, not when it could be dangerous for you and Kazu-chan and Emi-chan. I trust you, but-”
She put a finger over his lips. “You want to protect us. I can’t fault you for that. I really feel like this is the right path, but I would feel better too if she agrees.”
Kagome felt her entire body warm as he held her tenderly and kissed her deeply. They hadn’t been together in so long and she felt such a yearning for his touch that she almost couldn't bear it. If not for the fact that she was still recovering she would have gladly locked herself in a room with him for a solid week and been happy to do nothing spend it in bed with him making love.
“I miss you,” she breathed.
InuYasha growled. “Damn it, woman, that’s not fair. The second you tell me you’re ready I’m going to show you just how much I’ve missed you too.”
“Is that a promise?” she asked.
“Hell yes, it is,” he assured her. He kissed her again and then regretfully lifted his head. “Sounds like it’s almost lunch time. I’ll go make us something while you feed the pups.” He left the bed and leaned down to give her one last kiss.

“Oh! They’ve only gotten more adorable since I saw them last,” Shiori said admiring the two as they slept before turning her attention to InuYasha and Kagome. “Now, since I doubt you two called me over just so I could see them, talk to me.”
“Shiori, can your visions be guided?” Kagome asked.
Shiori turned the chair from the vanity so that she could sit down and face them. “How do you mean?”
“Like if we decided to do something, then you read us, is there a chance you would only see futures that would happen as a result of that decision even if we haven’t actually done it yet and could still change our minds,” InuYasha explained.
Shiori considered it. “Honestly I don’t know. What are we talking about here?”
“I had a vision and everything in me is telling me that InuYasha and I need to share the mate bond before I present our children to my people,” Kagome told her slipping her hand into InuYasha’s. “We plan to do it, but I was hoping you would be able confirm what I’m feeling.”
“Well, there really is only one way to find out, and mating is a huge decision so it will definitely have an impact,” Shiori said. “Also in the best possible future you two are definitely mated, but I don’t know exactly when it happens, at least not from anything I’ve seen so far.”
“Then will you see?” Kagome asked. “I know it is hard on you and I wouldn’t ask it if it wasn’t important.”
Shiori smiled. “I’d do it for you miko-sama even if you weren’t the chosen of my Inu-onii-chan and the mother of the two most beautiful babies in the world.”
“Keh, you’re a good kid, you know that?” InuYasha told her with affection. “So then, Higurashi Kagome, Great Miko, mother of my pups and love of my life, you are mine. My one, my only, chosen of of youkai and it is my intention to make you my mate as soon as fucking possible. Do you accept my intentions?”
Kagome smiled at him and blinked back her tears. She could feel his youki and knew this was a formal declaration, part of his magic. “Yes.”
“That should do it,” Shiori said. “A formal declaration of intention should definitely set at least a few futures and eliminate others. I think you two should hold hands and I’ll try to read you together as a mated pair, one heart, one mind, one spirit.”
“Oh wait, InuYasha, before she does it why don’t you get a bottle of water and a wet rag for after,” Kagome said.
“Good idea,” he replied.
He disappeared and returned less than a minute later, setting the water and the small towel on the bedside table before rejoining Kagome on the bed. He sat beside her and took her hand in his. Shiori took a slow breath and then slipped one hand under theirs. She rested the other on top and then closed her eyes. They both watched with concern as her hands began to shake, her eyes moving rapidly behind their lids and a sweat broke out on her brow.
Then suddenly Shiroi released their hands, her whole body shaking as she sobbed. “Do it. Oh gods nii-chan do it now. Do it yesterday. Oh gods, I’m gonna be sick, nii-chan.”
InuYasha swept her up into his arms and rushed over to the bathroom. As soon as she was on her knees she threw up into the toilet over and over. Kagome hurried over to them and laid the rag on the back of her neck while InuYasha held her hair. Their eyes met across Shiori’s back and she had never felt the desire to touch him so strongly before. She slipped around behind him as he knelt and pressed herself into his back, curling her arms around his middle. His free hand gripped one her her wrists.
After what felt like an eternity, Shiroi lifted her head and closed the toilet seat, before reaching up to flush. She turned her head to face them, lying her cheek on the cold plastic, tremors still wracking her body. InuYasha let go of her hair and took hold of her hand instead.
“Shit, imouto, you okay?” he asked quietly.
Shiroi swallowed hard and nodded. “Think I could get that water now?”
InuYasha grabbed the bottle off the counter where Kagome had set it and opened it. The bat hanyou took several small drinks. “Thanks, nii-chan. Phew that was rough. Take your mate back to bed nii-chan and then come back for me.”
Kagome released InuYasha. “He can take you first. I’m okay.”
“Mates come first, miko-sama,” Shiori said. “Even before little sisters, no matter how much they are loved. Only pups can squeeze in between that bond.”
“She’s right, woman,” he told her as he lifted her with ease.
InuYasha set Kagome back in bed and leaned over to kiss her tenderly. “Whatever she saw, no matter how terrible, it’s me and you to hell and back if need be, but nothing gets between us, not now, not ever.”
Kagome nodded. “I love you.”
He smirked. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
“Jerk,” she called after him as he went to go get Shiori and she heard him chuckle.
Kagome watched as he set Shiori carefully in the chair beside the bed. He smoothed her hair and cupped her cheek before hugging her and placing a quick kiss on her forehead. He really was full of so many wonderful contradictions: rough and tender, rude and kind, human and youkai. He sat down beside her and she leaned into him rubbing her nose along his jaw and then placing a kiss there.
“So, I’m guess not good would be an understatement for some of what you saw,” he offered.
“That’s why I love you nii-chan,” Shiori said with a small smile. “You always know just what to say.”
Kagome laughed a little. “He does doesn’t he, even if it’s the last thing you’d expect or think you would want to hear, when he says it, it’s just right.”
“You’ve always been there, you know,” Shiori told her quietly. “I didn’t understand it before but now I’m sure it was you. You remember nii-chan, I told you when I read you that there was always this light, warm and bright waiting for you and I could never see past it. You thought it meant you were going to die young, but I never did. It was her. You’ve been headed towards her probably since the day you were born. I bet if I had met her before she met you I would have seen the same thing. Both of you waiting for your future to begin. I just wish what was coming wasn’t going to be so hard. It’s going to get really, really bad.”
“Then are you sure we should go ahead and mate?” Kagome asked. “What if that’s what makes everything worse?”
Shiori shook her head. “No, I saw what’s worse.” Her lower lips trembled. “The whole world is leaning over the edge of a cliff right now and there is no end to the darkness that follows the path where it falls.” She glanced at the sleeping twins. “You can’t take them off the grounds, not ever, not until it’s over. Promise me. This is the only place they will be safe from him.” She shuddered and looked back at them. “You don’t want to know what happens if he gets either one of them.”
“We promise,” Kagome said. “Or course we do.”
“Shit, how are you going to present them?” InuYasha asked. “Fuck, how I am?”
“Everyone will have to come here,” Kagome said simply. “If Shiori-chan says they have to be here to be safe then they can all just come to us, because I am not risking our pups, not for anything. Anyone who doesn’t like can just get over themselves or will have to deal with me.”
The youkai in him rumbled his pleasure. His mate was as fierce as she was beautiful and strong as she was loving. No man ever had a more worthy mate than his Kagome. “Glorious bitch,” he murmured as he nuzzled her throat.
Kagome blushed at his expression of affection in front of Shiori, but didn’t resist as his bumped her head aside so that he could have more access to her throat. She could feel his youki wrapping itself around her, entwining with her reiki. He loved her, how he loved her and she could feel it down to her very soul. How could she ever reject that in any way?
“It’s okay, miko-sama,” Shiori told her. “It’s the declaration of intent. He can’t help it and while a human might not understand, I do.”
“Oi, quit talking about me like I’m not here,” he said, but it did help him to get his youkai back under control a little and he forced himself away from her with a last nip. “So, what else can you tell us?”
“First neither one of you should leave either until you’ve completed as much of the mating bond as you can,” Shiori told them. “I know the final marking might have to wait because she just gave birth but even then having the rest should help her heal a little faster.”
Kagome’s brow furrowed. “How does that work? I can’t heal a woman after childbirth. It’s something that has to happen naturally. I mean if there is an injury of some sort I can fix that but the actual process of the body returning to normal I can’t do anything about. Some things can’t be healed.”
“Keh, you know youkai have accelerated healing,” InuYasha explained. “It’s the same thing. Youkai females usually only need a week after birth to recover. It’s not healing you like you think of it, more like the natural process will just move a little faster because of my youki.”
“I’m sorry to say this but she’s going to need your ability to heal before it’s done,” Shiori told them. “Even in the best future there are going to be some really close calls. In some one or both of you don’t make it. None of those end well for anyone. The most important thing I can tell you is to trust each other, to have faith in each other.”
“I don’t know about the rest of it but that part is going to be easy,” InuYasha said. “And I’m sure as hell not dying. I only just found her and met my pups and if I have to claw my way out of hell to be with them then I will.”
“If anyone could do that, then it would be you nii-chan,” Shiori said as she stood up. “I’ll go now and let you two figure out the rest on your own.”
“I’ll see you home,” InuYasha told her.
“That’s okay. Shippou is actually waiting for me at the cafe across the street from the stairs,” Shiori said. “With everything going on he’s not really letting me go anywhere alone these days. It’s a little annoying, but sweet too, so I put up with it.”
“Just means he’s doing what he’s supposed to, and looking out for you,” InuYasha said. “I know you’re smart and tough, but I’d rather see you over protected than not enough.”
“I know, Inu-onii-chan,” she replied. “And I know how dangerous this Naraku is, probably better than anyone. I’ll be careful.”
