"Unhand me, woman!"
Sesshoumaru stood up as quickly as his wobbly legs would allow, dodging Kagome's stealthy hands before they could take hold of him again.
“I just want to help!” she insisted, rushing around the side of the couch to block his movement. “Is that so wrong? I’m your mate! I’m supposed to help you when you can’t help yourself!”
Teeth clenched, he turned shakily in the opposite direction and made yet another attempt to escape the persistent little woman before him.
It was already mid-afternoon and he had yet to grow accustomed to walking on human legs. The ground seemed to shift and churn with each step, throwing him this way and that, and he was beginning to wonder just how much longer he would have to put up with it. He wondered, also, if his gracious mate would ever let him live down his fainting spell from earlier that morning. All grace and dignity gone, he sneered at his own lumbering gait. There was little need to carry one’s weight as a youkai. Finely honed muscles and a predisposition for great agility and strength made even the most complex motions seem effortless. If he’d known the extreme limits of human vigor, he would have opted for an alternative means to keep his mate by his side.
“I am perfectly capable of-“
Kagome cringed at the heavy thud that followed Sesshoumaru’s sudden, and decidedly rapid, descent to the apartment floor.
Stubborn man, she grouched to herself, as she knelt down slowly at his side. What will it take?!
“Sesshoumaru…”
Clenching his teeth against a curse, the demon lord pushed himself onto his back and looked up at the young woman currently pinning him with a frown.
“Pitiful,” he groaned. “What use is this pathetic shell without my power to control it? It can neither move nor stand on its own. These legs are worthless if they can’t be utilized; and what good are these hands that can do little to protect you?”
“Is that all you’re worried about?” Kagome laughed lightly.
Hoisting her skirt up above her thighs, she leaned over him, bracing on one palm and crawling forward until she straddled his hips. She could feel his immediate response to her movement and a broad smile spread across her lips.
“Are you sure I’m the one that needs protecting?”
Her breasts pressed firmly against his chest, nipples standing erect with just a subtle rub. The impatient groan that resulted from her teasing was enough to make her smile break into a lecherous grin. His hands rose up to caress her, but she shied away, taking his wrists and pinning them on either side of his head.
“This change seems to be working in your favor,” Sesshoumaru murmured, lids lowered dangerously as he struggled halfheartedly in her stronger grasp. “Do you enjoy having such power over this Sesshoumaru?”
She inclined her head, dipping lower to brush her lips lightly against his as she spoke. “I could stay like this forever.”
“Don’t think that you’ll distract me so easily.”
Rocking his hips up to meet hers, Sesshoumaru chuckled. The color had found its way back to her cheeks in an instant. His Kagome was cunning, but not quite as experienced in the art of persuasion as he. Sliding one foot upward, he pressed his thigh against her rear, bringing her lips back to his and loosening her hold in one swift motion. Arms now free, he gathered her to him, rolling until his was above her, his hips planted squarely between her legs.
“No,” Kagome gasped with a sharp jolt. “I’m supposed to win…”
“Next time,” the reply was breathless and urgent.
"But..." she groaned as his hand slip between them and up beneath her skirt, "the fair..."
"Shh... We have all the time in the world..."
*~~~
It stared, with growing fury, at the two forms lying entwined on the floor of the apartment's living room. Its fingers twitched in giddy excitement. So close... so very, very close... It could almost taste the coppery tinge of their blood already; could almost feel the slide of their flesh against its claws as it rends them into tiny bits. It shivered in anticipation, taking an involuntary step away from the shadows lining the wall. Catching itself at the last moment, it withdrew once again.
Ours... the thought pounded violently in the back of its mind, soon to be ours... Ours to kill... Ours alone...
Spittle dribbled from between its grinning fangs as it panted raggedly.
They will be ours... soon...
Sniggering at the couple so utterly unaware, so deeply lost in their lust for each other that they heard not a single sound, it nodded as it shambled back into the darkness.
So soon… We will wait until then...

"Mmm, that feels nice," Tsuyako sighed contentedly as she lowered her aching limbs to the cool sheets of the bed.
Shippou's eyes followed his wife's movements, concern wrinkling his brow ever so slightly.
"You're taking this awfully lightly," he commented as he slid out of his bath robe and into a pair of light pants. "You had me worried, almost fainting in the shower like that. Are you sure you're alright?"
The woman smiled broadly. "You're too uptight. I'll be just fine, silly. Didn't I say so already? I only need to get some sleep, and then I'll be all ready for our trip to the fair."
He groaned at her flippant words, but ceased his pestering. It was no use, anyway.
The ritual had taken a lot out of him, but it had definitely taken more out of Tsuyako. A great deal of power was required to sever the ties between a lesser demon and its soul. He could only imagine the pain she had gone through to get someone like Sesshoumaru through the ritual as quickly as she had done. She'd nearly fallen asleep on the ride back to the hotel, not having the energy to make the trip all the way back to their home. Looking her over now, he could see the tiny veins at her temple standing out beneath her pale skin. Her eyes had slid shut, her chest rising slowly with a deep intake of breath.
He took a step toward her, panic rising within him as her features clenched in a pained expression. He paused, though, as a light buzzing drew his attention toward the bedside table. His phone was ringing.
Picking it up, his frown deepened as he recognized Inuyasha's home number.
"Misa-"
"She's gone!!" the woman's voice howled the moment the cell phone reached his ear. "Oh dear gods, Shippou, you have to find her! Please! I'm begging you, please!!"
His chest twisted as a wave of frightful desperation wafted through the telephone with each of the young mother's words.
"Slow down," he murmured urgently, lowering his voice and moving toward the bathroom as his wife raised questioning eyes to him. "Who's gone? What's going on, Misako?"
"Kimi!"
The single word was carried on the violently keening sob, and a cold shiver ran down his spine. "Tell me what happened."
"I put her to bed last night," the woman gasped unevenly. "She was going on and on about a blood oath. I didn't want her to worry, so I told her I would call today. I told her to go to sleep. Oh, Kami... I don't know where she could be!! Inuyasha's nowhere to be found, and Sesshoumaru hasn't returned my calls... What if something's happened to her?! What if someone..."
"No," Shippou reassured her. "Even if she left last night, she couldn't have gone far. Kimi's a smart girl, too. She'd never get herself into trouble like that."
"But she's never left the house on her own!"
"What is this 'blood oath?'" he asked, grabbing his shirt from the peg on the bathroom door. "You said she told you about it. Where did she hear such a thing?"
"I... I don't know," Misako groaned dejectedly. "It happened last night. She was hearing a voice. A girl, she said. It was something about a guard wanting Inuyasha for a blood oath against Sesshoumaru... I don't know who or what would be planning something like this, but we have to stop them, Shippou!"
Hands frozen on his buttons, the kitsune nearly dropped the phone as the words suddenly came clear to him. "Guard...? Did she say 'guard,' or was it a 'guardian' who wanted to get to Sesshoumaru?"
"I don't remember... Does it matter?! My daughter is out there somewhere by herself! I can't worry over the details right now, damn it!"
"You're right, you're right," he shook himself from his stupor. "Stay where you are. We'll head out your way as soon as possible. Don't leave the house, Misako. You understand?"
"Yes," she breathed and her voice was much calmer now. "I'll wait for you. Thank you, Shippou. Please, hurry!"
He hung up the phone and slid it into his pocket. Finding his shoes just outside the door, he slipped his feet into them and walked back to the bedroom.
"It looks like I have to make a trip back west," he started as he strode to the side of the bed.
Coming to a halt, he looked down to find his wife fast asleep. He sighed deeply. There was no helping it. He would be happier knowing she was here, out of harm's way in the security of this hotel, than risking exhaustion on such a hectic trip. He unfolded the blanket lying at the foot of the bed and laid it across her form. Pressing a kiss to her brow, he rose and made for the door.
The last thing we need is for something to go wrong at a time like this, Shippou growled to himself, snatching the car keys from the hook near the door before reaching for the handle. My power is nothing on its own, and Tsuyako... She hasn't the strength to protect us all...
Turning the lock securely behind him, he rushed down the hall toward the elevator, pulling the phone from his pocket as he went.
We can't do this alone...
He punched the call button angrily, glaring at the red number announcing that the car was near the top floor. A hiss passed his lips and he paced the hall as he dialed the phone. The call went through immediately to voice mail, and he hung up and began to dial again. The answering service picked up for a second time, and he slammed the cell shut and dashed toward the stairwell.
"Touran..." Shippou snarled as he took the steps down three at a time. "Where the hell are you?!"

"Uuuugh... My tummy hurts..."
Dragging herself along the forest floor, Poteto winced again at the stabbing pain in her gut. Had she known that she would have to suffer such a tremendous discomfort so soon, she would have waited to swallow the cat demon when there was time to work off the feeling of fullness. Despite the fact that her belly was merely an entranceway into the void between realms, the feline bitch had tried to fight all the way down, leaving her with a foul taste in her mouth and a badly upset stomach.
"Does it hurt terribly?" a calm voice inquired from behind her.
Without turning, she knew that it was her eldest brother, Shenzu, who'd come to see her this time. She cringed inwardly, but hesitated to answer him for the moment, opting to find a comfortable place to collapse before facing what she knew would probably be a discussion on how very badly the plan was going.
"You've done so well, little Pi-chan," the guardian's words were unusually soft as he spoke. "I've only come to see that your health is fairing just as well."
Forcing down the heaviness in her midsection, she turned to find him walking toward her.
"Brother...?"
A smile curved his beautiful face, his head tilting to the side just a bit, and the endless stream of his crimson hair flowing over one shoulder like a river of blood against his white robe. He knelt and reached out to her, lifting her effortlessly and cradling her as he walked the rest of the way through the trees and back to the little shed she'd held the hanyou captive in. The door opened for them, and he stepped inside, a slight flick of his head sending the leaves swirling up into a vortex, coming to rest in a fresh pile in the opposite corner. It was here that he laid her down, giving her a soft pat on the head before reclining backward onto the wooden floor.
Poteto could feel herself blush. It had been decades since Shenzu had come to this place. She'd always been the one to make the trip to her brother's gate, knowing that the elder guardian had so very little time to visit any of his siblings, much less one so very far down the familial ladder. It was an honor, and a secret fantasy of hers. Shenzu was her idol; her beloved onii-san, and the strongest of their line. He'd been first to encounter some of the greatest and most powerful souls to pass into the afterlife. He alone had the freedom to walk among the living without the burden of carrying the weight of his physical body.
Now, he was here.
"I'm sorry to be such a burden to you, Shen," she murmured, cringing again as her stomach twisted violently. "I know that it's a long way to come for something as silly as this."
He smiled again. "It’s never a long way for you, Pi-chan."
He stretched a palm to her, rubbing her belly gently as he spoke.
"You've done so much already. It pains me to see you so uncomfortable."
Poteto blushed again. "I haven't done it all on my own. Ogami and Kagami and all the others... They're working just as hard. You are too, brother. You're working so terribly hard for all of us; for our freedom."
He paused a moment and looked upward, his hand coming to a halt as he listened carefully. Her ears began to tingle, and she looked upward as well, eyes wide as the sound of her sisters' and brothers' screams suddenly filled the air around them both.
"What is this?!" she howled, claws rising to cover her ears at the deafening roar. "What's happening?"
He was on his feet in an instant, and Poteto struggled to rise as well.
"He's here..."
Her eyes grew wide at the words, knowing immediately what they meant. Before she could answer, Shenzu was out the door and into the air in one fell swoop. Filled with renewed strength, she rose and made to rush after him.
Sesshoumaru! the voices were screaming all around her as she torn through the forest as quickly as her legs would carry her. Sesshoumaru!!
*~~~
Kagome slipped into her robe, pulling the belt tight around her waist and padding across the bedroom floor.
Sesshoumaru had wandered off again.
He'd carried her to the shower after their little romp in the living room, but then he'd simply bathed and deposited her in the bedroom before pulling on a pair of pants and leaving to find something to drink after pressing a kiss to her neck.
"Bored now," she muttered on her way out the bedroom door.
She followed the hallway toward the kitchen, peeking around the corner in hopes of catching him unaware. The big tiled room was empty, however. She frowned. Where could he have gone off to? A quick look into the living room told her he hadn't made his way back there.
"You didn't leave me alone in this place... did you?" she wondered out loud. "If you left me, I swear I'll-"
She paused and turned abruptly, a hand reaching to the back of her neck as the hairs there stood completely on end. It was almost as though someone had run a finger across her skin. The feeling was palpable, and unnerving in its insistency. Stepping back out into the hall, she turned first toward the entranceway and then, as though on impulse, swiveled toward the door in the opposite direction.
He hadn't said she couldn't explore while she was in the apartment, she reminded herself as a sudden bout of uncertainty hit her. Drawing in a deep breath, she reached for the doorknob. Either way, what could Sesshoumaru possibly have in here that he wouldn't want her to see? He just wasn't the kind of person to keep dangerous, demon-only type items lying about where just about anyone could find and kill themselves with them... was he?
The door led into what looked like an office. There were shelves and shelves of books against one wall, and a large wooden desk stood in front of a huge window. She walked to the side of the desk, gasping as she took in the view of the late-afternoon Tokyo skyline. She scooted forward just a bit, looking far below at the people wandering through the streets adjacent to the grand hotel. It was no wonder he had made this into his office. This was a spectacular sight to behold.
Placing a hand against the glass, she wondered idly if she could spot her workplace from here.
"They come for you..."
Kagome spun around at the maliciously whispered words only to find the room empty.
"Who's there?" she demanded, fingers clenched in the fabric of her robe.
"They come for you, miko..." the whisper came again.
She gasped and whirled toward the sound. It was coming from the display case to her left. Something was there, she was sure of it. Stepping slowly toward the case, she nearly jumped from her skin as a light came on above her, and a shadow fell in her path. She held a hand to her chest as a figure stepped through the doorway.
"Don't scare me like that!" Kagome blustered while pinning Sesshoumaru with a very pissed off glare. "You can't just go around whispering crazy stuff in the dark! You almost scared me half to death!"
"Whisper?" he asked softly.
"That's a rotten trick, Sesshoumaru..." she muttered.
"Perhaps the heat of the shower has gotten to you."
Crossing her arms, she watched him step fully into the room and walk nonchalantly to one of the book cases.
"I'm not the crazy one here," Kagome insisted in a huff. "It's not funny. I heard you just now."
"I’ve said nothing," he countered, his voice growing stiff. "What was it that you heard?"
She frowned. "You didn't say anything? I could have sworn I heard it. Someone said ‘they're coming for you,' just now. Don't look at me like that! I'm not losing my mind!"
Stomping over to the display case, she pointed a finger at the space between it and the wall.
"Right there," Kagome stated. "I was over by the window and I heard the sound coming from right there. I know I heard it. I couldn't be imagining things."
He came to stand at her side, looking from the space near the wall to the expression on her face. Breathing deeply, he took her hand and stroked it gently before he spoke.
"You feel their strength now because of your bond to me," he murmured, reaching his free hand past her to the large glass case, "but it's without question that they should never have awakened at this time... It's of a great concern, even to myself."
"Awakened?"
Her eyes shifted to the case as a shelf lined with gemstones lifted and rolled back to reveal a compartment underneath. Nestled in a bed of velvet, sealed beneath the weight of three sutras, was Tokijin, the demon sword crafted by the evil Kaijinbo so many decades ago. Before she could ask about the blade, the mechanism hissed and slid from view, revealing a metal box beneath it. It was from inside this box that Kagome could hear the voice repeat its earlier warning.
"They come for you, miko... They come, and you can do nothing to stop them..."
"Who's coming?" she whispered back, eyes wide at the threatening words. "Who's coming for me?"
"Kagome?"
Sesshoumaru watched the fear grow in the girl's features and his brow furrowed. Is it Sou'unga that speaks to her?
His gaze fell to the steel case where Kagome had already begun to unlock the bolt. Her fingers trembled as they moved. Placing a hand over hers, his eyes widened when she brushed him aside without a word and shoved the lid back to stare down at the blade glowing madly at Tenseiga's side.
"That's a lie!" she yelled suddenly, fists balled as she glared down into the box. "You're lying! He wouldn't do that!"
"What is it, Kagome?"
She turned to him then, looking as though she was surprised to find him standing by her side. Here eyes searched his and then looked away.
"I... It's nothing," she said, and the lie was as obvious to him now as it would have been were he a full-blooded demon. "I'm sorry. I guess I overreacted. We'd better start getting ready to leave."
Nodding without a word, he slid the case closed and pressed the device back into place. He wouldn't question it just yet. Whatever it was that Sou'unga had proclaimed had been terrible enough to nearly bring his mate to tears, and yet he hadn't heard a sound from the demon sword. He knew, without question, that she now hid something from him. Pulling her up into his arms, he drew her away from the case and the demonic aura residing there. He would wait for her to tell him, but he would not wait for long.
*~~~
Gasping for breath, her feet sore from running on the uneven ground, Kimi slouched against the coarse bark of a grandly sweeping maple, her injured arm held tightly against her chest. She squeezed her eyes shut and bit her lip, forcing back the tears that threatened to fall. Golden eyes rose up to the clouds peeking through the tree branches far above. It was already evening time. The sun would set soon, and then it would get dark. She had to move faster.
Rubbing at her watery eyes, she grunted lightly and pushed herself away from the tree, only to fall back against its sturdy trunk with a sob. It was just too hard!
She didn't even know why she was here in the first place. Something kept telling her to go back home; home, where mommy was probably very worried about her right now. Home: where daddy would be waiting once he got back. Something told her to go home, but something else was telling her to keep running: and this something was much louder than the other little voice. It was just so very hard to listen when she didn't know what it was!
It said that daddy was in trouble. It said that Uncle Amaru would be in danger, too, if she didn't keep running, so she had to go. She just didn't know why.
Looking down at the cut on her forearm, she could feel that pulling feeling start to grow in her chest again. It pulled and pulled until she knew she had to move. Where ever she was going, it had to be very important.
Daddy...
Taking a deep breath, she pushed away from the tree again, keeping her balance this time. Yes. It was all to help daddy. She knew that, even if she didn't know how she could help. The strange girl hadn't sounded very mean at all, but she knew that a 'blood oath' couldn't be a good thing. Mommy was trying so hard to be brave. Kimi would be brave too!
Ignoring the pain in her foot bottoms, she stumbled off in the direction that the feeling in her chest was pulling her to.
"I'm brave too, mommy!" she gasped breathlessly as she struggled to climb over an uprooted tree. "I'm brave too! You'll see!"
