--------------------
The early evening sky above was a calming blue with puffy white wisps of
clouds slowly moving by, blocking the sunlight every now
and then. Crickets nearby were just beginning their quiet chirps.
Off in the distance crows cawed among the treetops as a wind chime tinkled
close by. The sweet scent of many flowers hovered, giving a honeyed hint to
the light breeze.
Inuyasha, happy, lay next to his mate on a blanket under the
shade of a very large oak. He sighed to himself and turned his head to
see her smiling profile. She was gazing up at the summer sky, eyes sparkling
with an emotion that outshone the sun. For a long moment, he just stared,
not caring who or what would come upon them. She was just so beautiful.
He wanted to say it. It hung on the tip of his tongue, but he just couldn't....
"Inuyasha." Kagome grinned while still looking at the sky. "You're staring
at me." Then she turned to him, brown eyes softening in the dusky shade.
"I love you."
Every time she said it he couldn't speak; struck dumb by the incredible
joy of what he felt. So instead, he kissed her, falling again into that
feeling that was beyond happiness. It was so overwhelming he wondered if it
was all a dream.
Kagome sat up and stretched. He watched her intently.
Another training day had come and gone. After coming
home from the temple, she changed into jeans and a pretty blue blouse,
grabbed her snuggle blanket, then playfully pulled him out to the backyard
garden. "Are you tired?" He asked.
She shrugged her shoulders. "Not too bad. We did some archery
today. I'm getting better with my bow. The instructor gave me all high
marks. She says I'm at the top of her class."
Even though she was training to be a miko, Inuyasha was still proud of her
and happy that she was doing well. What made her happy: made him happy.
She reached to her side then held up a yellow frisbee.
"Want to play?"
Inuyasha grinned. He liked playing frisbee with her. It would be their
second time. She knew he liked it. As if catching the flying disc in his
mouth more than once hadn't tipped her off.
Kagome stood and backed up close to the oak near the fence line. "Ready?"
Standing, he gave a nod then began running toward the house. The moment she sent it
spinning his way he jumped, catching it in midair with his hands.
Kagome giggled. He threw it back. "Come on, can't you do better than that?"
She caught it then spun it his way again.
Ready, Inuyasha leapt, this time catching the plastic disc
in his teeth before falling to land on the green grass again.
He threw the frisbee back to her, this time harder than before.
After it left his hands, he realized he might have thrown it too hard.
Kagome, laughing, backed up then began running to catch it only to stop
at the fence to watch it sail over far above. She pouted. "Inuyasha! You
threw it too hard. Now I have to climb over the fence!"
He began to walk toward her with a small grin. "Sorry bout that."
His mate raised a brow. "When we get inside you are going to owe
me big time." She grabbed the top wooden slat then hiked a foot hold
on the bottom one.
When he neared the fence she had already climbed over and was
walking to the yellow frisbee which had landed near the base of a huge oak
tree.
The second she bent down to grab it, he smelled danger. "Kagome!"
She stood and turned, holding the frisbee, clearly puzzled. "What is it?"
"Run back! Quick!" He yelled, afraid.
Just as she took a step in his direction, something fast flashed out
from behind the oak tree. The blur of black and brown cleared to reveal
a youkai restraining his mate in a tight hold. It was a wolf demon
with long black hair and angry blue eyes. His fur embellished garment
blended in with his slashing brown tail. The youkai smelled of blood and
pain along with anger and fear. Wild and hurt, the demon might kill Kagome and take her
away to be eaten.
Kagome, at first addled, squirmed in his hold. "What? Hey!"
Inuyasha, feeling helpless because of the barrier, growled.
"Let go of her, wolf, or I'll rip your heart out!"
Blue eyes, dark and furious, glanced back and forth from him to the
house. "I want my mate! Now! Where is she? I know she's here! I can smell
her! Ayame!"
"Let her go!" Inuyasha barked.
The wolf demon backed up a step, squeezing Kagome tighter, making her yelp
in pain. "I'll let go of her when you give me my mate back! Ayame!!!"
Inuyasha, still pissed, knew he couldn't go past the fence.
"Fine! I'll go get her. Just don't hurt Kagome!"
He started to the house only to see Ayame running toward them.
"Kouga?! Kouga?!"
Ayame stopped at the fence-line. "Kouga! You're here!" Tears welled up
in her emerald eyes. "I can't leave. The barrier..."
The male wolf holding Kagome moved closer. "Ayame. I came. I finally
found you." He shook Kagome, blood splattering
from his wounds. "Free her, miko witch! Free her now!"
Kagome shook her head, fear in her watery brown eyes. "I can't.
I didn't make the barrier. I can't free her or...."
"Liar!" He shook Kagome again and Inuyasha thought he was going to lose
it.
"Stop! Stupid Wolf! She's my mate! If she can't free me, she can't free
Ayame!" Inuyasha yelled.
The male wolf paused, breathing hard, eyes darting from Ayame to him to
Kagome. "She's your mate?" For the first time, he calmed some and sniffed
at Kagome's hair and neck before giving a nod. "The human girl is your
mate. I can smell it now. But it doesn't matter. She's a miko. She can
free Ayame."
"I can't. I'm not the one who made
the barrier. Kikyo did. Only she can move youkai in and out of it. Please,
let me go." Kagome pleaded with him.
Kouga did not release her. "No. I won't accept that."
Ayame sniffled. "It's true. Miss Kikyo made the barrier. This
is her home. She is the powerful miko. Miss Kagome can't set me free. Only
Miss Kikyo can."
Kouga stood there, blood dripping to the ground from his
body.
"Kouga! your hurt!" Ayame exclaimed.
Inuyasha knew that Kouga was a full blooded youkai, but the wounds weren't
healing like they should. That was a miko's mark, maybe even fatal.
"You heard your mate, wolf. Now let my mate go. She can't help you!"
He shook his head. "No. But the Miko who made this barrier can. She'll
help me or I'll kill this girl if she doesn't! Where is she? Get her here
now!"
"She's not here. She's at the temple. We don't know when she'll be back."
Inuyasha growled low.
Ayame shook her head. "No! Kouga! Please go! If Miss Kikyo comes back she'll
kill you! You don't have a chance against her! Please. I don't want you to die.
Go back to our pack and tell them I'm dead. Because I am. I'm so glad you
came. Just to know you're all right is all I need. I thought...I thought
you were dead. I'm so glad you're okay. Please. Please go back and stay
safe and live. For me. Please."
The male wolf blinked back the shine from his eyes. "Ayame..."

Kagome, listening, didn't try to struggle for the demon wolf had her in
a crushing hold. Instead, she sniffed back the tears and tried to think.
He wasn't going to let her go. No. She was his insurance. He wasn't going
to leave without Ayame and probably rather die trying to set her free.
She didn't know when Kikyo was going to be back. And if Kikyo did come back
now, Kouga was a dead youkai.
"Kagome! Remember in the basement? When you walked me through the barrier
there?" Inuyasha said hurriedly.
Of course! She led Inuyasha out of Kikyo's barrier in the basement.
And she had also broken the barrier around Inuyasha in the backyard.
It might be a little tougher but maybe...if she gave it her best...she could
do it.
"Kouga." Kagome spoke calmly.
"What?" He growled close to her ear.
"I want to try to get Ayame out. Will you let me?"
Kouga didn't speak for a long moment, just held her, his breathing labored.
"Okay. But. If you try to trick me, I'll kill you."
He moved them closer to the fence. "I will keep hold on your arm as you
sit on the fence. When Ayame is safe on this side. I'll let you go."
Kagome, watching Inuyasha who was intently watching her, nodded.
"I'll try my best."
Kagome climbed the fence as best she could with Kouga
holding her left arm in a solid grip. She sat on the top wooden slat, balanced
by Kouga's hold and by hooking her feet to the middle wooden slat.
She took a deep breath then held out her hand to Ayame. At first, the female
wolf hesitated. Taking one long look at Kouga, she reached out and grasped
her hand. Kagome closed her eyes and breathed deeply, delving inside herself
with determination. She didn't know how long she sat there, seeking within
for the power that was needed. The world went silent.
----------------------------------------
Inuyasha moved as close to Kagome as possible, ready to intervene. If
it didn't work, he would chance the barrier to break Kouga's hold. Even if
it killed him, he would make sure Kagome was safe.
Hours seemed to pass as Kagome, eyes closed, balanced on the fence.
The sun moved, stretching shadows. Soon, he could see a glowing light
surrounding her body. She pulled on Ayame's hand. Ayame, fearful, hesitated.
"Trust her." Inuyasha urged.
Kouga pleaded. "It's our only chance, Ayame. Come on."
Ayame allowed Kagome to pull her up. She climbed
the fence slowly keeping her eyes on Kouga.
When Ayame began to pass through the barrier, Kagome's glow became
brighter. Her expression cringed as if she were in pain.
Inuyasha tensed, worried.
Kagome let out an agonizing cry as she began to topple backward.
Instantly, Inuyasha reached for Kagome, grabbing her right arm.
An intense power exploded, piercing his body, stealing his
strength. "Kagome!" A bright light blinded him as he was thrown through
the air. Pain racked him as he crashed into the ground, seeing stars
right before everything went black.
----------------------------------
Inuyasha opened his eyes to fuzzy evening light. As his sight cleared,
he sat up. Before him sat Kouga with Ayame in his arms. They both looked
badly hurt. Kouga was whispering something to an unmoving Ayame, his long
black hair hiding both their faces.
"Kagome." Aching, he slowly stood and realized he had been thrown
about forty feet from the fence on the other side.
He limped toward the fence, fear growing, to see Kagome lying on the grass
on the other side. He stopped at the fence and let out a whimper. "Kagome?"
His mate didn't move. Too much in pain to care, he reached out only to
get a powerful shock from the barrier which knocked his hand back, scorching
the skin. It sizzled as he stared helplessly at his fallen mate. "Kagome?
Kagome? Can you hear me?"
Scared she was dead, his knees buckled then hit solid ground. "Kagome?
Please..."
In the midst of his grief, Inuyasha heard Kouga's
excitement behind him. "Ayame! Ayame! You're okay!" Directly, he heard the
female wolf's soft, cracked voice. "Kouga? Kouga...Oh Kouga..."
A moment later, he heard shuffling. Kouga appeared beside him with
Ayame in his arms. "We're leaving now. Thank your mate for me if she
ever wakes."
Inuyasha blankly stared at him before slowly fixing his gaze back on Kagome.
------------------------
The evening wore on as he sat there, helpless, unable to touch
his mate to make sure she was okay. The hole in his stomach began
to grow. "Kagome..."
What could he do? Everything inside kept him from moving away from her.
If he went for help, he would be purified by some Miko and never be able
to see her again.
The sound of a car pulling up caught his attention. It was Kikyo's.
As quick as his wounds would allow, he bounded away, far away, into the
trees. He dove into a thicket of leafy bushes and stopped, listening,
hoping that Kikyo would find Kagome and help her.
When Kikyo did find Kagome, he let out a breath of relief. Yet, standing there,
he allowed the full brunt of his grief to overtake him. If she never woke,
Kagome may forever be lost to him. He wiped his eyes
with his sleeve. "Kagome."
