“I’m going!” Kagome yelled up into Kouga’s face, her fists clenched at her side and her jaw tense in stubborn determination.
“I will not allow you to risk your life or my cub’s. You are not going.” Kouga replied testily. “I’m going.” She said barely above a whisper then turned on her heels and stormed back inside the fortress, her dark hair flittering after her. Kouga dropped his head back to look at the sky with a weary sigh, his shoulders drooping slightly. Saburo limped up beside his friend with a lopsided grin on his face adjusting his eye patch idly. “Problems, Kouga?” He asked innocently, fangs beginning to peak over his bottom lip as his grin spread slowly. Kouga lolled his head to the side and opened his mouth to reply, but was cut off by his troublesome woman who was being followed by Sesshomaru. She stopped beside Saburo with a pleased look on her face and crossed her arms over her belly. “Jaken is preparing Ah-Un for the Miko. This Sesshomaru expects you to ride with her.” The Taiyoukai declared boredly then proceeded down the steps to the awaiting guards who had the offending Ookami Elders chained and ready for transport. Kouga’s chin hit his chest and he sighed again pinching the bridge of his nose feeling the acute sensation of a massive headache coming on. He had expected this, but he’d thought… It didn’t matter what he thought, this was Kagome. It seemed she would be a part of this regardless of what he said or did. “At the very least, love, please put on an extra layer since we will be flying.” He requested dejectedly. “I love you.” She said sweetly, walking up to him and rising to her toes to place a chaste kiss to the corner of his frowning mouth. She turned and trotted back inside to comply with her mate’s wishes while Saburo snickered behind his hand. Kouga shot him a withering look and headed to the stables to make sure the little annoying toad was outfitting the double headed dragon properly. That woman was going to definitely be the death of him. Once Kouga had a very smug and hardheaded Kagome bundled in an extra blanket and secured on Ah-Un’s saddle with him wrapped protectively around her, the entire party headed east. Jaken remained behind to see to his Lord’s affairs and wished the Miko a safe journey in his awkward way earning a kiss to the top of his bald, green head. He squawked indignantly and returned to the stone fortress complaining about humans and muttering under his breath the whole way. Sesshomaru took the prisoners and the remaining Elders ahead to prepare the proceedings and to alert the pack of their Alpha’s return while InuYasha and Saburo hung back traveling on foot while Kouga and Kagome flew on Ah-Un’s back. They had to stop often because of Kagome’s condition and for Kouga to switch out with Saburo so he could rest his game leg, but they eventually made to the dens. Kouga’s attitude had improved slightly toward Kagome involvement. He loved her and couldn’t stay upset with the little onna, but his trepidation of the up and coming events weighed heavily on his shoulders. He only wished that the tribe would listen to their evidence and rule in his favor. If they didn’t, well, he’d just settle down with his mate in Edo and have as many cubs as her supple body could handle. He really loved the way she looked pregnant and it bolstered a deep seeded pride in him to know it was he who she chose to create a precious life with. He had made a promise to never leave her again and he would keep it, with or without the support of his pack. They were greeted by the full contingency of the remaining Eastern Ookami tribe. Not one wolf was absent save the four prisoners that were to be arraigned. Natsuki rushed Kagome when the dragon landed and literally pulled her off the beast while cooing over her swollen belly and hugging her repetitively. Ginta and Hakkaku’s greetings were much the same, but slightly tamer obviously afraid that they would break their human sister. However, they lifted Kouga completely off his feet in grand bear hugs smiling widely from ear to ear, congratulating him and slapping him on the back. It was good to be home.Kouga stood in the center of the dais between Elder Tsunenaga and Elder Kamatari with his woman by his side, a protective arm wrapped around her waist. The Council chambers were deathly silent and almost barren without the massive numbers that had packed themselves into the observation area during Ayame’s original hearing. It hurt Kouga’s heart to see the stark contrast so blatantly displayed before him and it spurred the raging flames of anger ever higher. Saburo stepped forth below them and bowed respectfully, winking at Kagome to calm her nervousness, before turning to address the crowd. “Brothers and sisters of the Eastern Ookami tribe, you all have been informed of the allegations against Elder Yorozohu and Elder Matsusuke. You all know of their inexplicable plots to harness ultimate power by whatever means necessary, means that I sorrowfully say, cost us dearly. They were in league with the vile snakes and the blood of our loved ones, our cubs, drips from their very claws as well as Ayame’s and Hiroshi’s. We have no tangible proof of their involvement in this hideous conspiracy, but we are leaving it up to all of you to decide. Each of your voices will be heard and if found guilty their punishments will be ordered by the collective command of the tribe.” Saburo said resonantly ensuring his words were heard by all in the chamber. There was a round of deafening cheers and demands to ‘be on with it’ and to ‘bring out the filthy bastards.’ Elder Kamatari held his hands up, silencing the room. “There is more that must be decided this day. Kagome, if you please.” Kamatari said first addressing the room then softly to the anxious Miko beside him, offering her his hand and a reassuring smile. She took it after Kouga nodded his consent and allowed herself to be drawn up beside the Elder wolf. It took her all the willpower she had not to fidget like a scarred child and remain standing tall, at least tall for her. All eyes were on her and she felt a lump form in her throat when she tried to swallow, the memory of their original animosity still emblazoned in the forefront of her mind. “You all know of what the Miko Kagome has done for us, sacrificing her very life for each of us. It is also common knowledge that Prince Kouga defied the original edict handed down by this very Council and mated the Miko. She is now, obviously, very heavy with cub and her status among us must be laid to rest before these proceedings can continue.” Kamatari continued giving her hand a light squeeze in assurance. “It goes without saying that her strength and generosity would be a most refreshing asset to our people.” Tsunenaga interjected placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “What say you?” Saburo demanded and was met with silence. Kagome began to sweat as she glanced into the faces of every wolf in attendance. They never wavered, keeping their eyes solely on her. She caught Natsuki out of the corner of her eye and focused on her friend to ease her nerves. The white haired female smiled broadly just as the room erupted in cheers and whistles, everyone in attendance expressing their adamant wish that she be made pack. Kagome couldn’t help the joyous tears that sprung forth or the beaming smile that spilt her face. Kouga walked up beside her and wrapped his arms around his mate pulling her in close, indulging himself in a very thorough kiss that left his woman flushed and breathless. The volume of the crowd rose and was joined by various catcalls and well wishes for the couple. Elder Tsunenaga stepped up when they broke apart for air and held up a hand once again silencing everyone present. They both turned to look at him as he approached. “Welcome, Princess Kagome to the folds of the Eastern Ookami tribe. It is a sincere honor to have one as great as you to be considered amongst our ranks.” Tsunenaga said officially causing the flush on her cheeks to darken at the compliment as the room boomed again with the thundering conglomerate of voices. “Told you there was nothing my woman needed to worry about.” Kouga whispered into her ear before kissing her cheek and pulling her to stand behind the Elders as the pack calmed themselves. “Bring out the accused.” Elder Kamatari exclaimed invoking a silence that almost vibrated with unarticulated rage and hate. Kagome could almost taste the blood lust rolling off the wolves in waves. It caused the pup to begin doing somersaults in her womb as if demanding the same. Kouga was stiff beside her, his lip curled in a terrifying sneer as his keen eyes watched the betrayers file out into the open, clapped in irons and shackled to each other. Her hands flew to her vulnerable belly, trying desperately to offer her child some comfort and protection against the entire ordeal. Sesshomaru’s guards had their weapons trained on the prisoners in a semi-circle that gave the crowd a clear view of the ones they would be judging this day. Sesshomaru walked up behind Kagome, ever the silent one and laid a hand on her shoulder causing the young woman to jump. She had to clamp a hand over her mouth to stifle the surprised scream that she almost let loose. There was a light increase in the pressure on her shoulder before his elegant clawed hand fell away. He remained behind her lending her his strength and the reassurance of his implied protection. “Is there anything any of you wish to say before you are sentenced?” Saburo asked the disgust clear in his tone. He punctuated the remark by spitting on the ground. The two Elders stood tall and stoic much as they had while being held captive by the snakes during each of Saburo’s vicious beatings and it caused something to flare in Kagome, chasing away any amount of nervousness she once had. Ayame quivered in fear and kept her head bowed, her shackled hand gripping Hiroshi’s firmly while the male stared menacingly at Kouga. The Prince let out a low, rumbling snarl and cracked his knuckles on the hand in which Goraishi lay dormant. His message clear. “Very well. Brothers and Sisters what say you?” Saburo said tersely raising his voice until it carried. Instead of a collective voice that would be loud enough to drown out mere thought like Kagome was expecting, each pack member stood forward and voiced their votes personally. Each wolf kept their eyes focused on the accused and their voices held the weight of all they had lost. It was unanimous. The vile usurpers would all die. The question was how and by whose hand? The solution wasn’t openly discussed and it left Kagome curious. Everyone filed out of the Council chambers in a silent procession, the guards and traducers emerging into the sun last. Kagome followed the pack as everyone picked flowers from the field that once had been flattened by use and alight with the musical giggles of the cubs while they played under the watchful eyes of their parents. The multicolored blooms were placed upon the desolate mounds of the deceased as their loved ones offered prayers to the Kami for their souls and promises of retribution to follow in quick secession. As everyone returned to the clearing in front of the Elders’ den, Kagome remained behind under the ever watchful eye of Saburo. Kouga had kissed her temple and followed his kin to ensure order at the gathering. The bouquet of flowers in her hands was simply not enough. It wasn’t because of the numerous graves; it was the manner in which they died that made the minute offering of flowers insufficient somehow. They all deserved to live, to have their voices added to their brethren in the Council chambers, to have their little ones bounding through the grasses and splashing in the water of the river. Kagome felt the sting of hot, remorseful tears burn molten streaks down her face and placed a single offering upon each of the graves belonging to a tiny life snuffed out entirely too soon. Normally, this would be the part where she would bend knee and offer solemn prayers to the Gods asking for peace to be with the ones that mourned, but she’d just have to come back and do it all over again. Now was the time for vengeance and blood. She wiped away her tears and squared her shoulders, trying to walk with as much dignity and poise as one could when they were so far along. Saburo, bless him, offered his arm in support and led her back to the group where they both took their places beside Kouga. The four doomed wolves were being tied to a tall post while a line formed from the clearing to the river as several decent sized riverbed stones were passed along from hand to hand. They were piled into several heaps, giving the pack easy access to their current weapons of choice. Kagome counted each rock that was harvested coming to a total of six hundred and forty three. The last one was handed to Kouga with a reverent bow. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what was about to happen, but the extra rock did puzzle her. No matter, she had a score to settle as the new Alpha female of the pack. Her deliberations could wait until later. She clasped her hands together concentrating intently on every projectile as it was thrown at the murderers, imbuing each one with a bit of reiki to give the impact a little more kick. All that could be heard was the dull thuds of multiple rocks striking flesh and the occasional crunching sound. The disgraced Elders kept silent and unwavering as the mountains, while Hiroshi whimpered and Ayame cried, both writhing in pain. Kouga kept his stone tightly in his grasp, watching the entire scene play out with a deadly glint in his ocean blues making them seem as cold as ice. Hakkaku was the one who threw number six hundred and forty two into Ayame’s gut signaling Kouga’s turn. The Prince turned to his beloved and stroked her cheek with a clawed finger lovingly. He gave her a ghost of a smile before stepping away and hurling the final reiki infused stone directly at Elder Yorozohu’s face where it met its mark soundly leaving a smattering of blood and scorched flesh behind. Kagome’s head began spinning from her exertions, but she remained on her feet. Now was not the time to show weakness. There was still more to be done. She saw Kouga nod to Sesshomaru and the Taiyoukai stepped forward summoning his acid whip allowing the shimmering venomous youki to pool on the dirt at his feet. Kouga summoned Goriashi and Saburo cracked his knuckles. The end was near for the broken bastards before them and Kagome could find no sorrow in her heart. It was justly deserved after what they had done. A sizzling crack left a pigtailed head rolling in the dirt while the tethered body spurted crimson from its neck. Hiroshi spit in Sesshomaru’s direction earing a deep gash from the flick of the demon Lord’s wrist along his ribs. The northern wolf gritted his teeth against the pain of the festering wound while Kouga and Saburo stalked closer to their intended targets. Every move that was made screamed the certainty of death. Another crack and Hiroshi’s upper chest slid from his torso, arms falling to the ground, severed nerves causing the limbs to continue twitching. His eyes were abnormally wide and his mouth was open in a silent scream, but the dead don’t speak. Silence fell into place once again as Saburo eyed his target, jaw set in steely determination, but Kagome could see the storm pass through his remaining eye. He was so far beyond angry and betrayed that Kagome wasn’t sure she could find the proper word to describe it in any language. A lethal clawed hand entered the gut of the disgraced Elder Matsusuke. The dark haired wolf gurgled disgustingly in his throat as blood poured from his mouth, his eyes fixated on the appendage disappearing into his insides. There was a fleshy tearing sound, wet and sickly, then silence once more as Saburo ripped out the beating heart of the deceiver tossing the organ away like refuse. It landed in the dirt with a meaty plop. Kouga’s scowl deepened as he moved forward, but Kagome stopped him before he could coil his arm back to strike. She wrapped her slender arms around her beloved’s armor clad waist and took a fleeting glance around them meeting the eyes of her new pack brothers and sisters. Her gaze fixated on the smallest mound in the distance and felt her holy powers stir to the surface. Kouga stiffened instinctively, but when her reiki fused with Goraishi, he relaxed into her embrace. She felt a soft kiss on her forehead and then he pulled away. It was all she could do to keep her eyes trained on Kouga, her spiritual reserves near empty exhausting her beyond imagination, but she would see this through. His ancestral claw flickered with youki gold and reiki pink, a union that was a blatant defiance of the Gods themselves, as he stalked closer to his prey. A chill racked her spine when she caught sight of his eyes. Gone were the soft recesses of love and adoration, no longer did they hold that smug laughter. They were murderous and cold, a predator’s eyes. Kouga cocked his head to the side and scented the air. “You reek of fear, old one, as you should.” Kouga snarled. Kouga’s hand shot out and clamped around Yorozohu’s neck, Goraishi sinking deeply into the tender flesh. The Elder’s blood joined that of his conspirators’ on the ground below his bound feet and his raiment darkened leaving the dark silk a ruddy black. His eyes never left Kouga’s while the young Prince tightened his grip with painstaking measure, dragging out the punishment and forcing the betrayer to feel every fraction of pain and pressure being applied. It seemed like an eternity before Yorozohu’s head was quite literally squeezed off his shoulders. Kouga stepped away, covered in blood and breathing heavily trying to recede from his blood lust. His shoulders shook under the intensity of his turbulent emotions and Kagome wanted to run to him, help him bare the weight of it all, but Sesshomaru stopped her with a barely imperceptible shake of his head. Saburo walked forward and stood before Kouga locking eyes with his pack brother. He fell to one knee before the ookami Prince, head bowed low in reverence, relinquishing his position. Kagome gasped as the rest of the pack followed suit until Kouga was the only one who remained standing. It was a vision she would never forget. He stood strong and proud in a field that reeked of poison, death, and justice; his jaw firmly set and eyes holding the pride that one would expect from a great leader. The breeze whipped his blood soiled locks around his muscular frame and his armor contrasted beautifully against his copper skin. Goraishi was displayed proudly, her reiki and his youki swirling in perfect harmony. Regal was not the word for what she was witnessing. It was something deeper, something primal, a silent acknowledgement that proceeded words and time. It was hard for her to believe he was even corporeal. Koga threw his head back and let out the most intimidatingly assertive howl she had ever heard. Tears prickled her eyes as the rest of the pack joined his voice with their own creating a symphony that carried on the wind. She couldn’t tear her eyes away and remained rooted to the spot when her mate’s declaration faded and his claw dissipated into dormancy. He pinned her with his carnivorous eyes and she felt her heart skip a beat. He took a purposeful step in her direction and she lost her breath. His gate was powerful and yet somehow speaking louder than words ever could, bringing him ever closer to a suddenly flustered Miko. He towered over her and flashed his crooked, toothy smirk, the one she hadn’t seen in ages, his eyes softening several degrees. He grabbed her hands in his just like he used to and she fidgeted, blushing heavily, just like she used to. His lips came crashing down on hers, bruising them with the possessive force, a message to all who bore witness that she belonged to him, Prince Kouga of the Eastern Ookami tribe. Their hands mingled together, caressing her belly as she unabashedly matched his ministrations with the same force, wanting the world to know that there was no other place she’d rather be. Kouga pulled back when she began to sway, their hands lingering on the life growing within her. Her eyes said it all. It was over. They were finally free to start again, for life to resume as it once had, for love and laughter to begin anew. They would prosper and rebuild stronger than before. They would remain vigilant and forever fair. Betrayal of this magnitude would never happen again. So let it be written. There was nothing he couldn’t do with her by his side. Miko Kagome, savior and protector, mate and mother, Alpha female and Princess, pack sister and his woman. Yes, his woman. He pulled her close, enveloping her in his arms and kissed her until they were both left dizzy and lightheaded, souls entwining and hearts soaring to the heavens while his, no, their pack celebrated the new beginning all around them.
