Chapter 26: Deceitful Workings
(A/N: Spoiler alert! Episodes 104-7: where the asleep/poisoned Sango, Miroku, and Kagome get caught in Renkotsu's fire.
I have nothing against homosexual people, any comments I give on such matters are the character's points of view, not my own. Personally, Jakotsu is one of my favorite characters.)
'That brat, Bankotsu,' Renkotsu fumed, 'his orders are making no sense. Why would he follow the commands of some demon, and refuse to tell us about any of it.' He was putting the finishing touches on Ginkotsu, trying to figure out how to get the information he needed. 'Very well, if he won't answer me, I'll get the information myself. Perhaps the enemies of this Naraku person who brought us back to life could tell me what I'm after. Bankotsu ordered Ginkotsu and myself to meet up with Jakotsu for further orders.' He growled to himself in frustration. 'Why does that kid trust such a freakish idiot and not I? I could be of so much more use than him in deriving strategies to deal with our enemies.' Drawing his attention to the project in front of him, "How is that, Ginkotsu? Everything working properly?"
"Gesh," the metal man affirmed as he tried out his mechanical limbs.
"Good, because we have a little side trip to make before meeting up with Jakotsu and the others," Renkotsu explained with mischievous intent. Ginkotsu always listened to him, since he was the one who tended his body.
It had been all too easy to impersonate a harmless monk and take over a temple that their group of enemies was bound to pass. The smell of dead men, courtesy of Renkotsu's fire, and graveyard soil was bound to draw them to the region. Everything went according to plan and he was given a chance to interrogate Inuyasha upon his arrival. He almost thought the dog would have sniffed him out and blown his cover, but the boy was apparently not the smartest of sorts.
"Why have the Band of Seven been resurrected?" he was finally able to inquire without suspicion.
"It was probably Naraku's doing," Inuyasha sat in the doorframe with the "monk."
"Tell me, who is this Naraku?" Renkotsu pried gently.
"Well, he's sort of like a demon," at Renkotsu's confusion he continued. "Naraku is not a complete demon. Right now, I would imagine he's hiding himself somewhere. He's undergoing another transformation and increasing his power, and he's using the Band of Seven as a decoy to buy time."
'Just as I thought, we are only being used as pawns,' Renkotsu let out a brief scowl at the thought. Bankotsu may not have minded being used by the various lords that hired them in his lifetime, but Renkotsu aspired for much more. The thought of being used again, sickened him, for it would only result in the same fate. Also, if this demon wanted power, who's to say he wouldn't retrieve the jewel shards at a later time? 'I will not let that happen. I will do what I must to ensure I survive.'
After his investigation, that Ginkotsu interrupted far too quickly, he had to get rid of the humans laying asleep in the house before they spoke and gave him away to Bankotsu. His hot-blooded leader would not tolerate disobedience. Retrieving the shards, he slipped out and lit the fragile building on fire before joining Ginkotsu in their battle against Inuyasha.
Renkotsu's actions had not gone without notice. Ever since dosing the three of them with his miasma and sending them to sleep, Naraku had kept his puppet nearby to keep watch. He sent an insect to inform Bankotsu of his comrade's treachery, and then erected a barrier around the form of the three humans. The fox continued to try and help them, by surrounding them by foxfire, but could not hear their small breaths through the barrier and panicked. Naraku only removed the barrier when Inuyasha arrived and put out the fire, knowing that Kagome was safe now. He was sorely tempted, after seeing Inuyasha's failure to protect her not once, but twice, to whisk her away and bring her to his side, but he could not allow her to see him in his current, disjointed form.
Laying in a clearing, Myoga removed the poisons from their bodies, Mukotsu's, as well as Naraku's, making them wake back up, ending the comatose state, but their strength had not yet returned.
"I'm sorry, Inuyasha, for making you worry," she only saw glimpses of what had occurred, but had that constant comfort of Naraku's substance inside of her. 'I knew we were safe when I saw Naraku, but I couldn't say anything.' Not understanding the full meaning behind her words, Inuyasha couldn't hold it in any longer and had tears well in the corners of his eyes. She worried he was mad, until she saw it was simply concern making him cry, and smiled warmly at her friend.
It took a few days for them to regain their strength, and when they did, Kagome was ever so eager to take a bath, "I feel filthy."
"What luck that we found a hot-spring," Sango pointed out.
Kagome agreed as they worked their way over to the steamy pool, "I know I could certainly use a nice relaxing dip to wash the stress away." They wasted no time climbing in and scrubbing away.
"Hey Kagome, is there anything you want to tell me?" Sango asked, giving Kagome an opening to admit she had a lover. They had already been informed how it was Sesshomaru that dispatched Mukotsu, which only heightened the assumptions that he was involved with Kagome.
Recognizing Sango's intentions, Kagome played innocent and managed to skirt around the subject until the slayer gave up, for now. She was now lounging on her own, wondering if maybe she should tell her, but squashed that idea quickly when the possibility of them hating her for it returned. "They would never understand," she spoke quietly to herself.
"They never do," a deep voice answered her, just as quietly. Whirling around quickly while covering herself, to see who had interrupted her bath, she was only met with dark laughter. "I have already seen all of you, for what purpose do you hide?"
"I, I wasn't expecting you," she looked up and saw the sky shimmer purple, a barrier, that meant she didn't need to whisper. She could tell right away that this wasn't really him, but rather, a puppet of Naraku. It didn't matter, she was just glad to see him; glad to get a chance to talk to him.
"You are recovering well," he pointed out, settling down at the edge of the water.
"Yes. I saw what you did to help us; I could feel it. Thank you," she smiled warmly, remembering how he had saved not only her, but Sango and Miroku as well. He couldn't be all-bad if he went out of his way to save them.
"The Band of Seven were not supposed to harm you," he explained to her, answering her next question of why the people he brought back to life poisoned them to begin with.
"We are almost to Mt. Hakurei," Kagome pointed out the progress they had made. "Oh, and Sesshomaru knows, about us. He, he threatened me for information." She got all worried, fretting he would be mad at her for telling his enemy anything. "I'm sorry, but I had no choice but to tell him."
"I would not have given that information if it being leaked would have hindered me. Sesshomaru cannot get to me," he watched through the eyes of his puppet as relief flooded her features.
"Sango and Miroku think he's the one I've been seeing," she giggled a bit at the ridiculous notion. "Not sure how they came to that conclusion, but they are getting curious and trying to get me to talk."
"So talk," he told her simply, gaining a confused expression from her. He wasn't seriously implying to tell them about her and Naraku together, was he? "Speak in vague truths. Don't specify names, but if asked about your 'demon lover,' speak of our experiences. They will assume you mean him, and it keeps you from needing to lie. The best untruth is no falsehood at all."
"Oh, I understand," she thought about what he said before about them always believing what they want to believe. 'I know there was something more I wanted to ask him too, but what was it?' she wracked her brain.
"You have company approaching," was said quickly as he vanished along with his barrier. She didn't get a chance to ask about him drugging her.
She began looking around wildly, trying to figure out who was coming and just why Naraku would leave her side. It must be one of her friends, probably Sango. Hearing the bushes rustle behind her, she stood to greet her friend and reassure her that she was just about to get out, but instead of Sango, she was faced with a very red-faced Miroku. That pervert, he was peeking at her! An uncontrollable scream burst from her lips and was sounded soon after by the dull thud of Hiraikotsu to the head. Apparently, he had snuck away to "make sure she was safe" while Sango kept Inuyasha from picking on Shippo. Yeah, sure, none of them believed that excuse for a second.
(A/N: Spoiler alert! Episode 110: Enter Bankotsu, Leader of the Band of Seven.)
Standing on the peak of a grassy cliff, Bankotsu glared at the castle below him, "This is definitely the place, it sickens me. And you're sure its still there?" The Siamyosho hovering nearby buzzed an affirmation. "Good. Okay, demon bug thing, go fetch the others."
When they arrived, Renkotsu began, "So, Big Brother, we are all back together at last." They had retrieved Suikotsu from wherever he had gotten off to, but there were still two members missing.
'He never was concerned about anyone other than himself,' Bankotsu reminisced, and then recalled the news he'd received not long ago about Renkotsu already disobeying orders. "Not all," he reminded. They tried to break the news to him gently about Kyukotsu and Mukotsu, but Bankotsu beat them to it. "They were killed; couldn't be helped." He knew that this life was only temporarily, and if they had done as instructed, they would likely still be alive. "Here, Renkotsu, you're the smart one, so you can write: The time has come to settle old scores, our vengeance will know no bounds, so prepare to die. Or something to that effect."
"Do we get to kill people?" Jakotsu delighted in the thought of actually being able to kill rather than just "occupy."
"Yeah, remember that castle?" he looked over the ravine to the large fortress.
"Why? Should we?" Jakotsu asked, not quite placing it.
"Yes, the inhabitants of that castle are the deceitful bastards that chopped our heads off," he explained with a sneer. They all remembered that incident far too vividly.
"I'm glad they haven't been wiped out by some other lord over the years," Jakotsu remarked, eager for revenge.
"Yes, otherwise my companion might not still be there," Bankotsu agreed, revealing another reason why they had come here.
"You mean they still have it?" Jakotsu asked.
"Yeah, and now I'll show them how it's used," he grinned as he thought about just how he would kill them.
"Big brother, will this do?" satisfied with Renkotsu's writing, Bankotsu sent it off with Kohaku. He was in no hurry, but the same could not be said for Renkotsu. It seemed he wanted this task, and all the other's associated with this demon Naraku, to finish quickly in order to gain freedom, unknowing that there would be no freedom. Bankotsu wanted to take his time, enjoying what he could, while he could. In this instant, that was letting those in that castle squirm with fear. He would attack in a few days, after they had plenty of time to stew.
His hand, it felt like it was burning up. The holy aura of Mt. Hakurei, it was supposed to purge any kind of evil influence, and the curse in his hand must fall under that category. It was nearly unbearable and sweat was starting to form on his brow. Kirara was forced out of her transformation and Shippo looked sick. Even Inuyasha was having difficulty, so they did the only thing they could: they turned around and headed back. He was eager to get away, especially after Sango and Kagome had so cruelly decided to drag him closer. "Hey, I just had an idea. What if Naraku is taking advantage of this barrier and hiding nearby, using it to prevent himself from being detected?" Miroku sought the other's opinions on the matter.
"No way, that's impossible," Inuyasha rebuked. "Naraku is pure evil; he takes one step on the mountain and he'd be purified immediately."
'But then, why did he send me here?' Kagome wondered. The two males agreed to hunt down the Band of Seven. Lagging behind as the other's walked off, Kagome couldn't help but continue to look at the mountain, now having no idea where to look for Naraku next, for there was no way he could be here, right? She was about to turn when a figure clad in white caught her eye and caused her to gasp, 'Kanna! If she's here, than that must mean Naraku is nearby!'
"Don't fall behind, Kagome, I'm not coming back for you if you get lost," Inuyasha hollered without turning around, drawing her gaze. She turned her attention back to the mountain, but Kanna was gone.
'He's here, I know he is,' she thought before hollering to her friends, "I'm coming, wait up!"
They decided to move far enough away for the demons in the group to regain their senses, but stayed nearby for the night. The holy aura would deter enemy demons and allow them to rest easy and relatively safe for the night. Inuyasha even allowed himself to fall asleep, feeling fairly confident with the location they had decided to bed down. He had not let himself rest for several long nights now, too worried over the safety of his pack.
It was the perfect opportunity for Kagome, and likely, the only one she would get.
(A/N: What is Kagome planning? I've been waiting for this next scene for a long time.
I am so excited to finish writing this story, so much so I can't even focus on my other story and am hoping to have everything written out before I run out of finished material for the other. So far, I just completed chapter 35 and am guessing 5-10 more, I hope to have a final count within the next few weeks. *Squeal!*)
