--------------------------
She pulled out of the darkness, hearing echos of footfalls on bare floors.
Opening her eyes, Kagome found herself in a plain room with pale white walls.
On her right there was an entire wall of blue curtain covering up a huge
window. She sat up. "Inuyasha?"
Something patted her hand. It was a dark haired older woman
dressed in a hospital uniform.
She smiled. "There, there, dear. You're safe now. No evil youkai here to
hurt you. I'm so glad to see you awake. For a while there, we thought you
were never going to wake up. The doctors said you weren't in a coma but the
miko priestess said you were in a sleeping state, probably healing from
some sort of evil that took its toll on your spirit. I should go tell
the doctor now that you're awake. It's almost lunch so the attendant
should be bringing your meal soon. Be right back, Sweetie."
Kagome, trying to organize her thoughts, blinked a few times to get the
fuzzy sheen to clear.
She was in a hospital.
She had been asleep for a long time. How long?
And last, Inuyasha wasn't here.
What happened to him? The last she remembered was trying to get Ayame
beyond the barrier surrounding Kikyo's home.
"Inuyasha." A hollow pain churned inside her chest.
Was he okay? Was he gone? What happened to him? Everything that happened after
helping Ayame over the fence was fuzzy. What if...what if he was bad hurt?
What if he needed her?
Kagome carefully slid off the bed to the window. She opened the curtain
to see the rest of the hospital and its many windows. The sky was growing
dark.
The door opened and a very young doctor entered the room. "Ah, Miss Kagome,
glad to see that you are awake. It seems your recovery may be quicker than
anticipated."
Kagome sat back down on the bed. "How long was I asleep?"
Taking out his stethoscope, the doctor smiled. "Oh, about three days."
"What??? three days?" Kagome blurted while the doctor listened to her heartbeat.
"Oh, yes. Your cousin, Miss Kikyo, found you lying on the ground behind her
home. She called the ambulance and you've been here ever since." The doctor
informed while checking her chart then his clipboard.
"Can I leave now?"
He smiled. "I want to keep you one more night for observation first:
take some blood tests and monitor your vitals. If everything looks good,
I will release you tomorrow at noon. Right now, you need to eat something
then have a good night's rest." He paused, his brown eyes reading her for
a moment. "Miss Kagome."
"Yes?"
His manner turned a little more serious. "I would like to ask you
about the bite mark near your collar bone."
Kagome blinked, startled at the question. "Bite mark?"
"Yes. It seems you have been bitten by someone or something. Do you
remember being bitten?"
Kagome didn't like to lie but if she told the truth, Inuyasha would
be in danger. "I can't remember what happened to me in the back yard at
Kikyo's house." Hopefully, he would take that as an answer.
He nodded, a skeptical light in his eyes. "I see. Well. It seems you
might have been bitten by some sort of youkai. I can have a priestess
come and take a look if you would like...."
"No. That's all right." Kagome was quick to say. "I'm sure that if it
was a youkai they are long gone by now. The demon probably tried to eat
me and got a nasty shock from me in the process. I don't believe I'm
in any sort of danger. I am a miko in training of course. I can take care
of myself."
The doctor seemed satisfied with her answer. "I can see that you are
a very strong young woman, Miss Kagome. You were also very lucky. I will
be back in the morning. Good night."
After the doctor left, Kagome frowned at the window to stare sadly out
at the darkening sky.
---------------------------------------
Inuyasha gazed sadly at the hospital from his hiding spot in the park
nearby. The thick bushes completely hid him. He knew being there was dangerous
but he couldn't help it. After the ambulance had taken his mate away, he had
followed it the best he could without being seen. Now, as he stood there,
staring at the five story tall building, he sighed heavily. It had been
three days and still he had no idea how his mate was doing. He wanted to
go there and find out but didn't know how safe it was. Were there mikos
around guarding the hospital like the security guards? He couldn't smell
any but that didn't mean anything. Most mature mikos could conceal themselves
from youkai with powerful spells. He could walk right up to one and not even
know it...but...they would know he was a hanyou.
Something fast whizzed by his left ear. He jumped out of
the bushes to see a white haired miko who looked younger than Kagome. Fearful,
he dashed away, avoiding another arrow by the skin of his teeth. An alarm
went off nearby. He ran faster over the treetops till he came
to the edge of the park and the city. He jumped up then down into the forest
just before another arrow nearly clipped his shoulder.
He landed on the earthen floor then sped off as fast as he could.
Tree trunks, branches, and bushes rushed by. When he had covered at least
two miles, he stopped. Silent, he stood there, listening. Then, he froze,
hearing at least six arrows being notched at the same time. Staying still,
he scanned the dense foliage for any sign. Not seeing anything but knowing
he was about to die, Inuyasha fell to his knees and raised his hands.
If there was just one ounce of mercy in any of them, they wouldn't kill him.
A very sharp pain pierced the center of his back. Then everything went
black.

Kagome, sitting at the dining room table next to Kikyo, frowned at her
plate. After the doctor had released her at noon, Kikyo had driven her
back to the house. During the drive, Kikyo had informed her that she
had hired a new cook/housekeeper and her name was Rin: a fourteen year
old orphan who needed a place to stay where she could work to pay for the
rent of the room that used to be Ayame's. Kikyo
didn't ask about what happened outside by the fence but she had told
Kagome that she had tried to track the wolf youkai with no results and
that the trail of the hanyou was long cold by the time she went looking for him.
"Would you like some more to drink, Miss Kagome?" The young girl asked.
Kagome blankly stared up at the girl and gave a slow nod. "Sure."
"You must rest well for a couple of days, Kagome." Kikyo said while
holding up her glass to Rin. "Then continue your training at the temple.
You have survived a near death experience and it has made you stronger.
The fact that you faced off the two youkai and hanyou alone and lived tells
me you have much strength of spirit. Though I am still confused as to how
they passed through my barrier. Perhaps, when your memory returns, you can
tell me about the entire experience. I have a feeling they threatened
to kill you unless you helped them. In very rare circumstances, a training
miko can go to extraordinary lengths when threatened. Your spirit may
have saved you from death by helping them pass through. All I know is that
they could not have passed through unless helped by me, the one who created
the barrier, or by a miko who felt her life was in danger."
Kagome just nodded.
"Oh, and I found these." Kikyo said while placing something on the
table between them.
Kagome froze, her jaw nearly dropping. It was subjugation beads and teeth.
"It seems the subjugation beads were broken in the process of passing
through the barrier." Kikyo sniffed.
Kagome so wanted to touch them but didn't. Instead, she stood, excused
herself from the table, then exited through the kitchen and out the back
door.
Out in the back yard garden, Kagome walked to the place near the
fence line where she had last seen Inuyasha alive. At the fence, she paused,
staring out at the forest of trees just beyond the empty field of
waving blades of grass. Delicately, she touched the wood, feeling very
lonely. "Inuyasha, where are you?"
Had he abandoned her? Or was he dead? Or was he hurt somewhere and
couldn't get to her? Or...was he out there now, watching her, afraid
to come out because Kikyo might see him and kill him?
She gazed up at the sky. There were a few hours till dark. She had to
try. Making up her mind, she climbed over the fence.

Kagome, drying her head with a towel, sat on her bed with a heavy sigh.
She had looked until dark, calling his name over and over, hoping with
a hurting heart that she would find him only to come up with nothing, not
even a clue. Tomorrow, she would look again. She would not give up hope.

The classroom buzzed with students carrying on about their lives and loves
while Kagome, again, stared out the window in a daze. It had been several
days and still no sign of Inuyasha. Somewhere deep inside, a fear began to
bloom that he might be dead.
"We have a special treat for you students today." The teacher bellowed.
Kagome turned, barely caring to notice. The teacher, a young male monk
with long black hair, taught the class on youkai defense. He smiled while
opening a big leather book on his desk. "Open your textbooks to page
one hundred: how to spot the difference between full blooded youkai and
hanyous."
There was a shuffling of pages along with a confused murmur from the
students.
"Yes. I said hanyou. Hanyou's are the abomination that occurs when a human
breeds with a youkai. The offspring of such an unholy union may have very
distinct features that point to the origin of their parentage. Such a being
may look almost human accept for some defining feature of their parent such
as dog ears, or cat ears, or brightly colored hair, or fins or claws, or
so on, and so on. Today, we have the great opportunity to actually
observe a real life hanyou."
Kagome perked up. Did he say a real life hanyou?
The class murmured louder.
"Quiet down please." The teacher waved a hand. "Yes. I said a real life
hanyou. It was loaned to the temple school by the
miko enforcers of the city. They caught the half demon near the outskirts
of the city park. It is currently subdued in a cell on the basement floor.
After reading this chapter, we will take a quick trip downstairs to view
the hanyou. I will give you fifteen minutes to read."
Kagome, a horrible knot forming in her stomach, couldn't focus on
the book in front of her. Hanyou? Could it be?
----------------------------------
The students filed into the room. Kagome, walking on tip toes, tried to
see before she went through the door. The first thing she saw was a five
foot tall cloth covered box. The room had concrete floor, walls, and ceiling.
There was no window that she could see but it was brightly lit with fluorescent
lights from above.
The teaching monk led them to circle around the box.
"Now class, I want you to stay a distance of at least ten feet from the
cage. The hanyou has been subdued but it pays to always be safe."
Kagome felt a terrible pounding in her chest. When the monk
jerked the cloth away she covered her mouth with her hand. "No."
It was Inuyasha, on his knees, his hands tied to the back of the cage which
was made of teeth, bones, and dark metal. Ears drooping and head bowed,
his long silvery white hair hid his face and most of his bare chest.
The only clothes he had on were the red pants and they were burnt and
torn in several places. He wasn't moving.
"You see class...." The monk droned on. "...that this particular
hanyou has what appears to be dog ears. That means he must have been sired
by an inu youkai or dog demon." He pointed. "You can also see that he has
claws and if we could see his teeth you would find fangs." He smiled.
"Lets hope we don't ever get to see that up close."
There was a twitter of laughter among the students. The sound made the
ache in her gut worse. She raised a hand.
The monk pointed to her. "Yes?"
Kagome tried to speak without a tremble in her voice. "What will happen
to the hanyou?"
"Ah. Yes. When we finish using him in our studies he will be given back
to the miko's who trapped him."
Kagome wanted to ask what they would do to him but knew in her heart
that he was going to be killed. The monk said that hanyous were an abomination.
They were not allowed to live.
Just as the monk finished with his lecture, the bell rang. All the students
began leaving while the monk followed them, loudly telling them about
the homework assignment.
Kagome waited till they were all gone. The teaching monk hadn't seem
to notice that she stayed behind.
Quickly, she went to the bars. "Inuyasha? Please. It's me. Kagome. Are
you okay. Please speak to me. Inuyasha?"
His ear twitched.
"Inuyasha, Please tell me you're okay."
He slowly raised his head. Dull amber eyes opened to see her. Kagome
sucked in a breath. His mouth was covered by some awful muzzle made of
bones and teeth. It was so tight that it cut into the skin.
She reached through the bars but couldn't touch him.
" What did they do to you?"
When he gazed sadly at her hand she began to cry.
"I'll get you out of here. I promise."
He closed his eyes and bowed his head.
Kagome wiped her eyes and stood. "I'll be back."

After the last bell had rung for the day, Kagome hid in the bathroom
till she was sure everyone had left the building.
She made her way to the basement and found the room where
Inuyasha was, opened the door to a dark room then turned on the
lights. The cage was covered again. She hurried to it then pulled the
cover off. He was still there in the same position as when she left him.
"Inuyasha?" He didn't stir.
Kagome examined the cage. It was made of metal but had teeth and bones
fused to it, sealing it. She grabbed the bars and concentrated as hard
as she could till she heard a crack. The front wall of the cage came loose.
She laid it down then went to him. Placing a hand on each shackle, she
broke that seal too. His arms fell and then he began to fall forward.
Kagome caught him. "Inuyasha?"
He leaned heavily on her. "We've got to get you out of here. Can you
stand?" She didn't know if he even heard her or not. "I'm here now, Inuyasha."
___________________________________________________________
The world swam around him like a crushing ton of water. Far away, he
could have sworn he heard Kagome calling him. 'Kagome?'
Warm hands touched his face and hair. It was so familiar to him. He knew
that touch...and that smell. It was Kagome. He tried to focus and to
speak but something kept him from opening his mouth. He raised his head
with some effort then opened his eyes to see Kagome's beautiful face.
She was smiling but crying at the same time. He heard her say something
about getting up and walking. So he tried.
___________________________________________________________
She didn't know how she did it, but Kagome snuck them both out of
the temple training grounds, ducking behind bushes, walls, and trees till
they were safely hidden in a wooden area.
Kagome knelt on the ground. Inuyasha laid down, eyes closed, panting
under that terrible muzzle. After resting a few moments, Kagome helped
him up. They walked for a long time as the sun was setting. Finally, they
came to a place that was free of houses or people.
She took Inuyasha's face in her hands. "I love you. Inuyasha."
His eyes, now a bit clearer, gazed back. He reached out and touched
her cheek.
Kagome closed her eyes, put her hands on the muzzle, then
broke the seal with a grunt. It fell to clank on the
ground at their feet. "You need to leave. You're in danger around me.
I can't bear the thought of you dying. Go. Please. Never come back."
Hurt shined in his eyes.
"No." He cracked. "I can't leave you."
Kagome could feel tears running down her cheeks as the woods darkened
around them. "I can't bear seeing you hurt and I don't want you to die!
Why can't you leave me and stay safe?"
He hugged her close.
"You're my mate. I love you. I'll die without you."
Kagome let herself, for just one moment, give in to the feel of him and
his arms around her. What could she do now?
"Come with me, Kagome."
"Come with you where?"
"My mother's house. It's hidden deep in the wilderness. We can live there:
you and me. No one will ever find us. I haven't been at my old home in years but
I know it's still there."
Thought raced in her mind. If she left... She would never finish her
training at the temple. But...things had changed. Inuyasha was more important
to her now. She loved him. "Okay."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Inuyasha, watching the back of Kikyo's house, waited expectantly for
Kagome while sitting on one of the top branches of a very old tree. From
time to time, he could see her shadow pass by her bedroom window. He hoped
she would hurry.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Kagome packed the last of her clothes in her suitcase along with the
picture of her family. Quickly, she went down to the kitchen to find it
empty and the servant's door closed. After grabbing some food and stuffing
it into a small bag she had found in the pantry, she hurried out the
back door. The light of dawn peeked out over the tree line,
helping her to see the pathway leading to the wooded area behind Kikyo's
home.
_____________________________________
Inuyasha jumped down from the tree just as Kagome approached. He
took her suitcase then turned his back to her. "Get on my back. With me
running, it will still take most of the day to get there."
When he felt her light weight straddle his backside, he dashed away
and didn't look back.
