Chapter 26: What Comes Around, Goes Around, part 2
A servant came over to where Toga and Takehiko were talking off to the side in the banquet hall watching the proceedings of the party goers. She handed a note to Toga, bowed and left. Their presents were required in the grand study. The father and son shared a look. It seemed that it was time seal the deal.
Upon walking into the brightly lit chamber, they were greeted by the lord and master of the castle himself.
“Well, I must say, Toga, when Midori informed me that Ryu was finally settling down; I rushed back home as soon as possible.”
“Ryu-”
Toga couldn’t finish his sentence as the large dragon youkai practically squeezed the breath out of him with his titanic form. Standing an inch taller than Toga in human form, Ryukotsusei was still a force to be reckoned with. Knee long grey hair swayed with the movement as crimson eyes twinkled and glittered like rare jewels.
“RYUKOTSUSEI! I must admit that I’m at a loss,” Toga sputtered. “But I must object to you man-handling me in such a way and ask that you put me-”
Letting Toga go (almost dropping him) but all the while smirking, Ryukotsusei could barely contain his excitement. “You, my friend, have made my century! Do you know how long I’ve been trying, in vain mind you; to get that brat of mine mated?”
“Er… no, not really, Sei,” Toga muttered with his visage coloring a lovely blush.
Takehiko quietly coughed at how easily embarrassed his son became at public displays of affection from others who were not his mates.
Sobering up somewhat, Ryukotsusei offered them goblets of blood-wine; it was a potent blend from the Valley’s grape vineyard and of course from young drake blood that what instantly heated by a breath of fire then cooled and stored to age for later consumption. The dragon lord had an impressive collection; however, neither inu put the cup to their lips. The wine was an acquired taste and it tasted like crap as far as Toga was concerned and his father shared his sentiment.
“I give you my condolences on the passing of your son, Lord Takehiko and your brother, Lord Toga,” Ryukotsusei sincerely said after sitting down behind his desk. Papers were spread about it, some were in a neat pile and others looked as if they were waiting to be burned. Ink pots of assorted colors were meticulously grouped together along the top edge of the massive Cherrywood desk. Blots of reds, blues, and yellows could be seen under the crystals phials as the liquids probably oozed down the sides from Ryukotsusei getting rid of the excess from the quills writing tip.
“Now, my lords, let’s get down to business. As Midori’s guardian and caregiver—it’s my duty to negotiate a proper dowry.”
Both Toga and Takehiko nearly choked. Weren’t they here to discuss the terms and conditions of Ryu and Kaori mating contract?
“Um… forgive me of my ignorance, Ryukotsusei, but what about your son?” Toga asked unsure of what the dragon was talking about—clearly he already drank his fair share of the wine.
Waving away Toga’s inquiry, Ryukotsusei answered smugly, “I’ll sign whatever peace treaty you draw-up as long as it stipulates that he remains mated with at least one hatchling to avoid war and being disowned.”
He gulped down the rest of his wine and refilling his own goblet while Toga and Takehiko have yet to take a sip.
“What does any of this have to do with Midori? And why are you talking to me about a dowry?” Toga inquired still trying to wrap his head around the unexpected turn of events.
“My sister left him to my care. When Midori was young, his clan was attacked by Hanshou—a vile and ruthless ice drake from the far North. It was mating season and he wanted the alluring and enchanting dragon emperoress, Moriko. She already accepted another as her intended, which greatly angered Hanshou.
“When he discovered her den, Moriko was heavy with child. She knew that he would not accept no as an answer nor would he accept another’s seed, and ordered all the young hatchlings and under aged adults be evacuated. Moriko sent word for aid and I left as swiftly as possible but when I arrived, I was too late. I found Moriko barely alive.
“That monster had violated her in the worse way possible. She was bleeding out—the hatchling had already been expelled from her damaged womb. There was nothing I could do. I gathered her weak body into my arms and held her and with the last of her breath, she asked me to watch over Midori as I would my own son,” Ryukotsusei explained with glassy eyes.
“Matte? You mean to say that, that Midori-” Toga cut-in gobsmacked.
“Midorikawa is the last of his kind—heir to the ice drake southern clan and my only nephew. Moriko was my sister.”
Toga and his father stared flabbergasted at Ryukotsusei.
oOoOoOo
The doors of the grand banquet hall opened revealing a very upset Midori and a smug looking Kaori, who was attached to his arm as he led her to where his young charge was mingling with some of the guests waiting to receive his mate-to-be.
Oh, he knew this would not end well—at least not for Kaori. Midori almost felt sorry for her, but he couldn’t as he did warn her of the consequences should she not adhere to Ryu’s wishes.
Ryu turned around when the talking stop and the vibrant smile immediately dropped from his face. Midori steeled his nerves for the on-coming tantrum.
“My Lord, my I present to you, your future bride, daughter and heir of Gorai, Lord of the Southern Lands, Kaori.”
All around cheered and raised glasses to toast and offered words of congratulations but Ryu didn’t hear any of it. The only thing he saw was Kaori standing there in a kimono and not the dress he wanted her to wear. His face was twisting in silent rage.
“What happened to the gift I gave you, Kaori?” he asked as he tightly closed his fist as a small flame already ignited at his knuckles.
Kaori’s smile faltered but she remained steadfast, unconcerned to Ryu’s rising temper.
Letting go of Midori’s arm, she stood directly across from Ryu. “I chose to wear one of my evening formal kimonos. The dress was not to my liking or to my taste,” she replied with a devil my care attitude.
Ryu was livid and before anyone could say or do anything, he released a fire ball at Kaori. She screamed throwing-up her arms in alarm as the flames engulfed her but the only thing that burned was the beautiful kimono that was now a pile of ash at her feet.
No one said a word.
They could only stare.
Kaori was standing in the middle of the hall completely bare to all those in attendance.
Ryu walked-up to her, fire burning in his eyes.
“You will wear what I give to you or you’ll wear nothing at all. You can go back to your chambers and put on that dress or walk around on my arm as you are—it makes no difference to me,” Ryu said daring Kaori to disagree otherwise.
Tears welled up in her amber orbs, spilling silently down her flushed cheeks.
To add insult to injury, Ryu said, “I care not for tears—they do not move me.”
As Kaori didn’t move, he held out his arm for her to take and began walking around introducing her to his clan and allies.
oOoOoOo
On the opposite side of the banquet hall…
Inuyasha did his best not to burst out laughing. He was really trying and he nearly lost it when he heard his mate snort in amusement.
“Well, serves the bitch right,” he commented snagging one of the many finger foods from a passing-by servant with a tray of assortments delights. He moaned quietly as the delectable meat wiggled down his throat.
“Hmm, I do believe you’re right, Inuyasha,” Sesshoumaru answered.
The youngest of the pair couldn’t be happier at his cousin’s misfortune. Inuyasha knew he shouldn’t feel that way but he did after all the crap she put him through and the strain she caused to his relationship with Sesshoumaru. No he didn’t feel bad at all.
“What comes around goes around and she’s been asking for that for quite some time,” Inuyasha said placing a loving hand on his small bump.
“I’m kind of glad that I did listen to father for once and not kill her. If I had, I would have missed the humiliation on her face,” Sesshoumaru gloated with a slight smile on his lips.
Yawning a bit, Inuyasha struggled to keep his eyes opened. He was getting full from the many different treats. “I’m tired, Sesshoumaru.”
“I think that it’s safe for us to depart.”
“We don’t have to stay for the dinner?” Inuyasha asked unsure if it was proper to leave before the celebratory meal began.
“No. Besides, I rather not have my dinner or appetite spoiled by having Kaori sitting naked at the table,” Sesshoumaru said leading his mate out to their set of rooms.
oOoOoOo
Midori place his hand over his face. He knew. He knew that Ryu would explode and parade Kaori around on his arm like to common whore. He was use to these childish bursts of anger. This would not be first the time Ryu has done something like this nor would it be the last.
Turning from the despicable scene, Midori made his way over to the liquor table. He grabbed a crystal goblet of blood-wine and downed it in one go.
“Attempting to get drunk?”
Being caught off-guard was something that infrequently happened to Midori, but the dragon almost shot out a fireball of ice that would have blanketed the room and killed everyone inside.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you, Chief Advisor.”
“Please call me, Midori.”
“I am Kyoura.”
Midori was beside himself with pleasure at having the fire elemental approach him.
“May I ask you a question?” Kyoura prompted.
“Only under the condition that you take a walk with me.”
“Fair enough,” Kyoura answered.
The dragon lead Kyoura out the open double doors that revealed a stunning orchard of cherry blossoms. Lanterns lit the narrow path through the tall trees down to a dark shimmering lake. The sliver of the moon reflexed off the water’s surface giving the area an unnatural glow but tranquil nonetheless. Kyoura loved it.
They walked in silence until they came upon a spot near the water’s edge. Kyoura was absolutely sure that the large sakura shaded the small span of space during day.
“So, you wanted to ask me a question?” Midori said breaking the peaceful calm of the ebbing evening.
Clearing his throat, Kyoura was positive that his face matched the hue of his hair.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I noticed that a fair share of the guests tonight followed you with longing in their eyes—admirers and previous lovers?”
Midori blinked stupidly by the boldness of the posed question but laughed all the same. The melodic tinkling was like a soothing balm to Kryoua’s weary senses
“Neither.”
Now it was Kyoura’s turn to look confused.
“They are a long list of admirers who try to gain my favor. I’m not interested in swallow romance or one night of pleasure,” Midori admitted.
He was not ashamed to say that he wanted a mate to love. He remembered how opened and loving his parents were before his father died. His mother always smiled whenever his father walked into a room or how his father would blush at something his mother would whisper in his ear.
“They are in love with the idea of bedding the so-called black sheep,” Midori continued in a bitter tone.
“What do you mean?” Kyoura asked curiously.
“Haven’t you noticed?” Midori asked astounded. Most people when they met him fall over themselves because of his exotic looks. Obviously, Kyoura was different. Maybe it had to do with him being a fire elemental, Midori didn’t know.
“Noticed what?” Kyoura wasn’t sure what he was supposed to notice.
“I’m the only dragon in this entire valley that’s not a fire breather.”
Kyoura stared blankly, clearly not understanding what Midori meant by not breathing fire. He was a dragon. Didn’t all dragons have an internal source to emit fiery flames as Ryu did tonight?
“What I mean to say is that-”
“I don’t need to know,” Kyoura said interrupting Midori.
“I use to think that I was cursed. I was in one serious relationship and that ended with me being exiled and taking my brother with me. I told him to stay home but Ryuura refused to listen to reason. I guess that’s nature of being twins.” Kyoura smiled sadly at the memory.
Kyoura wanted the other know a little bit about him for some reason. He found Midori enthralling. He wasn’t attracted to his exquisite beauty (Kyoura noticed that when they first arrived) but he was drawn in by Midori’s playful and mysterious personality.
Silver and crimson orbs stared into each other’s depths. The air became charged as the lake surface violently bubbled to near boiling as steam vapors rose. Frost was gathering at the beach’s edge and on the surrounding trees. Mist descended heavily like fog—it was close to raining but Midori and Kyoura paid it no mind at they were fixated on one other.
In the next moment, neither would recall who moved first as lips met in a passionate kiss.
oOoOoOo
From the balcony of his bedroom having left the betrothal celebration, Ryuura saw his brother’s flaming phoenix birds flying high above the tree line outlined in an iridescent blue. The same blue he saw when Midori told him that he was an ice drake.
Eyes widen in incredulity. He gasped at the implication.
His brother found his true-opposite, his perfect match.

A/N: Well, how was that? Did any laugh at Kaori? I certainly did. Was anyone surprised to see Ryukotsusei? I knew he was going to show up at some point. Who would have thought it would be for his son’s engagement party. Did anyone guess that Midori was Ryukotsusei’s nephew? I didn’t see that coming, but there’s something else—remember, somebody trying to kill the ice drake. And what about Kyoura and Midori? Kyoura obviously is smitten with the advisor. Can any see what happens next? Don’t know? Well, stay tuned for the next chapter.
