Breathing a deep sigh of relief, Kagome released her death-grip on the cell phone and smiled at the demon lord waiting for her outside the elevator.
"She didn't need the car after all," the young woman laughed breathlessly. "Yutaka is taking mom and his little sister to the tent they rented there, so we can go pick Tsuyako up and head out right away. Knowing mom, Souta'll be there to help set up, too."
"Resourceful woman," Sesshoumaru commented, taking his place at her side and guiding her to the room Shippou's message had specified.
"So Shippou'll meet us there too, right?" Kagome inquired. "It won't be the same without him. I wonder if Tsuyako knows where he went off to?"
His thoughts had gone in a similar direction. The kitsune had developed an uncanny ability to leave little detail on his whereabouts when some issue or another came up. Sesshoumaru felt no real urge to question the man. Others' business was of little concern to him. He was less interested in where that demon had gone, and more interested in the sudden appearance of the aura of a lesser demon somewhere in his hotel.
His first inclination was that Inuyasha had been brought back from where ever the cat demon had stowed him. There were subtle differences in this creature's presence, however. It was much milder than Inuyasha's. Much softer, and less able to trace.
"Pay attention, will you!" a voice piped up beside him suddenly.
Caught up in his mind's wanderings, he hadn't been aware that they'd made their way to the miko's room. Had been even less aware, he realized with a start, that they'd been standing there for the better part of ten minutes while his mate had greeted the older woman and delved into what looked to be a lively discussion.
"Hm?" he queried distractedly, interest peaking at the color brightening Kagome's cheeks.
"I was wondering," Tsuyako continued slyly, pulling the door closed as she stepped into the hall, "since Kagome's being such a prude again... Was the sex better as a human, or as youkai? I'm dying to know!"
"Tsuyako!" Kagome howled, pushing the woman in the general direction of the elevator and away from Sesshoumaru's amused expression. "Shippou was right. You really don't know when to quit!"
Sesshoumaru watched the two women scuffle good-naturedly in their wait for the box to return to their floor. He followed shortly after, the earlier feeling of unrest leaving him without notice. All the better for him if it were Inuyasha. If the boy was here, then he wouldn't be around to interfere at the fairground. Not that there was much the hanyou could do now that the bond had been initiated with his mate. He simply preferred to enjoy Kagome's company without the strained silences that ensued whenever Inuyasha showed his annoying face.
A short glance toward the young woman in question set off a fresh wave of arousal deep in his gut. She must have felt his advance, because she lifted expectant eyes to greet him as he reached her side.
"Ooh, I know that look!" Tsuyako squealed, pushing between the two and hooking an arm through Kagome's. "Now, now. Just because I brought it up doesn't mean you get to act out your elevator fantasies while I'm here."
A startled choke was the girl's reply, and Sesshoumaru ushered her into the waiting car and out of the miko's grasp.
"If you find it offensive, I'd advise using the stairs," he growled over one shoulder.
Pinning a very flustered Kagome in one corner of the little square room, he slid a possessive hand beneath her blouse, allowing the warmth of his fingertips to spread over her skin before turning his eyes to shoot daggers at the brunette currently staring in open curiosity at his display. He should have known she wouldn't take a hint. With a defeated sigh, he pressed the lobby button and retreated to his place at Kagome's side, ignoring the disappointed expression on Tsyuako's face.
As much as he enjoyed the attention, this particular set of prying eyes was just too much even for the demon lord to take. He'd find no amusement with the nymphet wife of his business partner and friend. Chancing a gentle nuzzle against his mate's blushing skin, he smiled. At least he had this simple pleasure to keep him entertained amidst the miko's bouts of reckless spontaneity.

Angie glared at the pencil in her hand in frustration before slamming it down on the desk next to three others. She bit back a vulgar retort, opting instead to close her eyes and take a deep breath before opening the drawer to her left to search for another one.
"If you break on me," she threatened the little yellow writing device she found there, "I swear I'll build a fire just for you and your four friends here."
"There you go arguing with pieces of wood, again," a voice chided from her left.
Looking up, she met the laughing eyes of her right-hand man, Juuro, as he strode toward the front desk. Rolling her eyes at him, the older woman gestured at the papers before her with a sigh.
"I'll never get these things done if the lead keeps breaking!"
A gentle hand patted her arm, and she released a second, deeper sigh.
"I'm worried about them too," the man murmured, eyes lowered as he reached and picked up the pencils she'd discarded. "It's all moving too fast. I would have been happier knowing that the Touran woman was here, but she's nowhere to be found, either. Now the kid's taken the sword... How much longer do we have to sit by and pretend to not know anything?"
"As long as it takes," Angie replied as she watched his features twist into a frown. "You know just as well as I do that things have to play out the way they were meant to. Yes, I'm scared. I'm scared for that girl... for what she'll have to endure. I'm terrified that Amaru... No. I'm terrified that Lord Sesshoumaru won't have the power to protect them both."
Shaking himself from his reverie, Juuro gave the woman's hand a squeeze, throwing up a brave front and a confident smirk as the set the pencils down in a neat pile to his right.
"Looky here, stupid girl," he pronounced with authority, "your weak human brain may be too feeble to understand, but the great Lord Sesshoumaru would never succumb to the likes of some stupid guardian!"
Smiling at his words, she shooed him away jokingly. "Like I didn't already know that! Stupid old toad..."
"Ha! You would dare to speak to I, the grand general of Lord Sesshoumaru's kingdom, in such a way? The nerve! I won't stand for this, missy."
Laughing now, Angie watched the man storm off in a playful huff, casting him a grateful smile when he paused to glance back at her from the lobby doorway. He nodded to her, bowing slightly and slipping outside to strike up a conversation with the doorman on duty. Sighing to herself, she picked up her pencil and turned to the spreadsheet in front of her.
"Sesshoumaru-sama.. doko ni iru?" she whispered to herself quietly as she made marks down the paper.
*~~~
Sesshoumaru sighed and grimaced.
It was slowly beginning to dawn on him that this night would be woefully lacking in those simple little pleasures he's been looking forward to. At the moment, his freshly human senses were reeling at the flashing lights and varying aromas that surrounded the trio as they meandered through row after row of concession stands and game kiosks.
"Oh! The milk bottle game! Let's try it, Sesshoumaru!" Kagome's girlish giggle drew him back to their present state.
She'd navigated the milling crowds as though there were none here but the three of them, slipping past couples and between giddy children or teens. He'd been given little warning of the pace they would take upon arrival to this once barren land. The fact that he still remained standing after the hours spent traipsing after the two hyperactive women was more than commendable in his mind. The excitement shared between the two had built and continued to amplify through some bazaar trade-off he could only assume would qualify as female bonding. After a quick stop-in with her mother, reassurance that the elder Higurashi matriarch had gotten everything under control, and happy wishing of birthday joy to the young girl dressed as a western style princess, they'd set off on their own grand escapades.
The feeling of foreboding still hadn't fully passed, however, despite the efforts to remain distracted from his ominous thoughts. Humanity alone could not keep his baser instincts from warning him that something was amiss.
Inuyasha...
Somehow, he had still felt the boy's presence. It escaped his understanding. He had nothing to support the suspicion aside from the familiarity he had with his brother's comings and goings. As far as he knew, on a whole, humans lacked the innate ability to blindly distinguish a friendly acquaintance and a blood relative without prior knowledge of such. They had no receptors attuned to each others' genetic codes. In short, they had no preternatural sense of kinship. He shouldn't have been able to feel that tingling in the back of his mind that told him his brother was there in his hotel; perhaps in that very hallway, or that very room...
Despite knowing that his feeling was accurate, there remained the question: was it Inuyasha he felt? The trace of youki had been so faint...
"Here," Kagome laughed, smiling up at him and handing him 3 round objects. "You should try this one out. All you have to do is knock down the milk bottles stacked up there. See?"
He eyed the bottles dubiously. "There's a greater likelihood that this game is rigged for failure than it is for success."
She stared at him incredulously before pointing at the array of stuffed creatures hanging behind the head of a bored-looking kiosk attendant. "How could you resist taking one of those cute little ferrets home with you? Or that big yellow chocobo? Can't you see they're just begging to be won?"
"Highly doubtful," Sesshoumaru grunted quietly.
He couldn't help but smirk, regardless of his earlier protest. He'd played games such as these as a young pup. They were meant to be tests of precision and control. He recalled many warm afternoons of target practice with his father when they'd taken time off from hand to hand combat. It had contributed to his idle habit of chucking things at his own vassal later on in life. He weighed the rotund little projectile in one hand. It was a far cry from the fifty pound stone orbs he'd tossed about as a child, but it would do. Taking aim, he let fly at what he perceived to be the dead center of the stack of bottles.
Kagome cringed inwardly as the ball ricocheted off the edge of the little platform and nailed the kiosk attendant square in the back of the head. The man jolted forward as though he were under attack, hitting the ground with an loud 'OOMPH!' and glaring up at them before slowly coming to his feet again.
"Sorry!" Kagome spouted, waving the man back and bowing in apology. "It was an accident! Right, Sesshoumaru?"
Turning to her mate, she was forced to duck quickly as a second shot sent a ball zooming past her face to lodge itself in the chain link fence at the back of the kiosk directly facing theirs. The other attendant glared at them sternly, and she jumped to take the last ball from Sesshoumaru's hand before he could cause any serious damage.
"I'm really, really sorry," she repeated, stifling a snicker at the very pissed-off expression on her mate's face. "I'll take the last turn, if that's ok? Yeah... ok..."
Ever aware of the numerous pairs of eyes now watching her, she made a half-hearted attempt to hit the stack, balking and nearly falling over in disbelief when the little ball bounced off the backboard and hit the bottle on the lower left side, sending the entire pile into a heap.
"Go, Kagome!" Tsuyako cheered from her hiding place just below the edge of the kiosk counter. "Now grab your prize and let's get the heck out of here!"
"Uh... that one!" she pointed up at random, color flooding her cheeks at the frigid glare she was now at the center of. "Thanks! Bye!"
Grabbing the disgruntled demon's hand, and ignoring the miko's burst of laughter, she took the prize without a word and hurried away from the angry little man and his crazy balls.
"How cute!" the other woman commented between fits of laughter. "Now you have two puppies to call your own!"
Kagome looked down at the stuffed animal in her hand and her blush grew even hotter. She'd meant to get the fuzzy little ferret, but instead the attendant had handed her the big, brown dog with the floppy ears that had been hanging next to it. She didn't dare to look up at the dog demon currently moping at her side.
"Look at the bright side," she offered quietly. "At least he's not white... with a moon on his forehead... and a great big red tongue..."
The miko beside her burst into a fresh fit of laughter, and she tried to hide her own snickers at the affronted snort that came in reply.
"Alright," Tsuyako gasped playfully, tugging the demon lord back in step with them as he made to walk away. "Enough of that. How about we find something else to do? See the sign up there? They have a mirror maze. I absolutely love going through these funhouses."
Trotting a little ahead, the older woman pointed toward a blue flag off the side of the road. This path was lined with tall lamps heading up a slight incline.
"That sounds fun!" Kagome agreed, getting back into the spirit. "Afterwards, we'll get something to eat, though. I'm just about starving!"
Without waiting for a reply she slid her hand into Sesshoumaru's palm, clasping her fingers through his and following in the wake of the Tsuyako's childlike enthusiasm. A slight tug on her wrist brought her back, however, and she froze as she felt his breath agains the curve of her neck.
"Once that insufferable woman has lost herself in the hall of mirrors," his words puffed warmly against her skin, "I will find a suitable place to exact punishment for your current misdeed."
Shivering at the promise in his tone, she had little time to collect herself before they continued up the dirt path toward the tall wooden towers that stood just outside the funhouse doors. A slow smile spread across her lips and she tightened her hold on his hand.
She couldn't wait.
*~~~
There were children somewhere below. Fangs clenched, claws flexed, it was sure that it could taste the innocence wafting from their delicate flesh.
It stared distractedly at the flickering lights between the surrounding trees as they went round and round. Pretty things. Pretty little shiny things. How it wanted to devour them one by one, plummeting this wretched place filled with noise and small human beings into utter darkness. How it wished to slither through the frantic masses and bathe in the glorious waves of unbridled terror. A shiver ran down its spine; cold and seductive.
This had been a wise choice, indeed. The tall wooden tower on which it now perched overlooked the entirety of the field. Humans milled about below, unaware of the ravenous black eyes feeding on the sight of them from above. This tower, and its twin a few feet away, made up the anchors to the gate the humans had built for their 'funhouse'. It chuckled to itself at the name of such a place. What fun could be had in a room filled with mirrors? Did these creatures not know the joy that lay in the disembowelment of one's adversary? The glee in the beheading of one's opponent and the proceeding absorption of said rival's entrails in the aftermath of conquest?
"Pity..." it rattled to itself, throat laden with viscous scum.
It bowed its back and slunk forward, drawn into attention once again as light tendrils of purifying magic skittered across its skin. Head cocked, it blinked down into the crowd and scuttled back in excitement to hide from view of the three humans that now approached. The timing could not have been better. That horrid little priestess had come as well, but from the look of her, the purity that coursed within her veins was nearly depleted. It had only to swoop down and snap the bitch's neck and then it could complete the mission it had set out to do. Sniggering jovially, it gnawed at its claws, barely able to contain its excited convulsions.
A handful of steps would bring them near. A handful more would bring them doom. Dashing away its earlier trepidation, it drew itself up into a crouch. A little more... just a little more...
"It's really not as bad as it looks, honest!" the priestess' voice wafted up to its ears as they drew even closer.
It could feel the muscles along its back tighten, ready to pounce; ready for the kill.
"Right, Kagome?"
Light burst before its eyes at the questioning voice, and it pulled back abruptly, as though burned by the sound of that name. Snarling against the uncomfortable tugging feeling that echoed in its mind, it dug vicious claws into its scalp and glared down at the three now standing just below its perch.
Kagome... Kagome...?
"Enough!" it growled, ripping at the hair on its scalp until its claws were moist with blood.
Enraged eyes fell to the girl standing only scant yards away and another growl rattled in its lungs. Yes... It should remember the mission; remember its goals. The girl was to die this night. No lingering regrets would follow. The coppery taste of the bitch's blood would soothe this irate spirit it held within.
Grinning broadly, it rose to its full height. There was no longer any need to remain in the shadows. It lowered its hands slowly, bringing the fingers to its lips and licking away the blood that clung there. Pitch black venom seeped from its fangs to coat the glistening claws as it readied itself.
Kagome... the name echoed in its mind.
Eyes rolling back in their sockets at the sweet misery that single word brought, it breathed the name into the night.
"Kagome... Kagome..."
How this mantra stung at its every senses! It raked the poisoned claws across its chest in ecstasy, drawing blood from the wounds and tasting the power that her name had driven through its own veins.
"Kagome..." the whisper quickly grew into a fevered battle cry as it swooped down upon the girl. "KAGOME!!"
*~~~
If not for the foul burst of jyaki, and the feral screech that followed it from somewhere above, Tsuyako was certain she wouldn't have had enough time to push both Sesshoumaru and Kagome out of the way before the demon came crashing down on them. Rolling herself up and out of the dirt, she didn't bother to give the creature the opportunity to land its second blow. The earth rumbled beneath her feet, shattered planks of wood zipping past her ear as she ducked down and grabbed the arm closest to her and pulled.
"Get back down!" she ordered Sesshoumaru as the bewildered demon struggled to rise from his position on the ground. "Get down and stay down, you hear me?!"
Ignoring the stubborn look on his face, she spun immediately to the girl half buried by her side.
"Kagome? You ok?"
A second flare of jyaki spiked to her left and she didn't wait for an answer before she caught the girl about the waist and rolled the two of them toward the raised wall of the funhouse. She shoved a knee between them and kicked, sending Kagome rolling with a terrified squeak underneath the structure just in time for a second shower of wooden planks to come crashing down where they'd just been. Craning her neck and sputtering as even more dust rose up to lodge in her throat, the miko's gaze flicked around the little clearing in hopes of catching sight of whatever it was that had attacked them.
Flecks of dust rose up from the ground to dance frantically in the light shining down from the funhouse doorway. The two towers flanking the door they'd been heading into lay in broken piles to the left and right of her. Whatever had struck at them had clearly missed and taken out the funhouse entryway instead. Anxiety rose in the pit of her stomach as she struggled to her feet, moving to Sesshoumaru's side as the demon lord blinked into the darkness as well. Despite missing its mark, however, this thing had rend eight beams as thick as her own waist into shreds with only two swings.
"We have to move," Tsuyako whispered urgently, body still poised to spring at any moment. "Whatever it is, it's still here, and this area's too small to fight in. There are too many people here."
As though by some gruesome twist of fate, childish squeals of joy rose over the sound of the calliope music, accompanied by hastily running feet and the flutter of garments as the demon pounced suddenly from the roof of the building behind them, set on its new quarry.
"No!!"
She could just make out the cherubim faces of the two little girls running up the path toward them before. She watched the eyes widen, their paces slowing at the sound of her cry; expressions twisted in horror at the shadow that descended around them. The ghastly snapping of tiny bones carried across the narrow clearing as loudly as the shriek of pain that followed the terrible sound.
"Oh kami, no..." the breath left her body as one tiny form fell limp on the ground.
Before her feet could propel her forward, a heavy weight pushed her to the side, and she nearly fell to the ground before Sesshoumaru caught her. She barely caught sight of the girl's horrified expression before Kagome barreled toward the menacing shadow that now held the the second child aloft, hands reaching out and tangling into a clump of red-streaked hair and dragging the demon backward and away from the little girl.
Kagome didn't know what had come over her, but as she dug her nails into the what she hoped was the tender scalp of this damnable demon, her only thought was to get it away from the little girl before it could do anymore harm. It snarled loudly at her, and she clenched her hands tighter, leaning her weight backward and pulling at its bloody mass of hair until it let out a roar, dropping the child and whirling on her instead.
"You monster!!" she screamed as its clawed hand came around, seeking to take ahold of her. "You-"
Golden eyes stained with sinister black rivets glared out at her from a viciously grinning face. Dark streaks of purple tore rifts along ashen pale cheeks. Hair, once vivid white and now matted with blood, flew about them in wild abandon, catching and reflecting the carnival lights in a morbid show of color.
"Inu..."
"Kagome..." the unfamiliar voice ground out as the face drew near to hers.
The vile black tongue slid from between viciously sharp fangs to slide across her cheek, and she could feel him tremble as he slowly withdrew, hand rising to clasp the back of her neck and draw her body close to his.
"Kagome..." it whispered her name, gently and sweetly.
Kindly and calmly he crooned in her ear, the only preamble given before he lifted his other hand and drove his claws into her midsection, twisting them with a giddy laugh until they burst through the fabric of the blouse at her back.
