Forgive the lengthy delay between this update and the last, things got crazy in RL and I was unable to get enough free time to work on this. Well several things are set to happen in this chapter, including a lemon, not to mention it is EXTREMELY LONG, so we are going to jump right in and start the story. So without further adieu… On with the show! ########################### When Sesshoumaru reached Inuyasha’s door he pushed it open a crack to see what was going on. Kagome was humming a soothing melody as she tucked the children in securely. Both were already far into the land of dreams. Her face had a serene expression as she kissed both of their foreheads before rising to leave. Sesshoumaru stood back as she reached the door. Her smile was radiant as she looked up at him after taking his arm. He smiled back to her and led her down the hall to the next to last bedroom. “This is my set of rooms; you are welcome to make any changes you wish to make it more to your liking.” Sesshoumaru said as he led her into his rooms. Kagome gasped as she wandered around the room. The layout was the same as in Ikaru’s and Inuyasha’s chambers. Many of the decorations were similar to Ikaru’s even, leading Kagome to believe that someone else had provided the initial decoration. Sesshoumaru’s chambers lacked the feminine feel that Ikaru’s had, but she had expected that and already had a few ideas to make the somewhat cold room more inviting. “We should also see about getting you your own wardrobe, as lovely as my sisters clothes look on you, you can’t keep borrowing her clothing forever.” Sesshoumaru said before he heard Kagome gasp more loudly than before. “I don’t think we have to worry about that Sesshoumaru, Ikaru really does think of everything.” Kagome said. When Sesshoumaru entered his bedchambers he noticed the backside of his mate sticking out of a wardrobe that wasn’t there when he had last left his rooms. Upon closer inspection he noticed it was filled with an assortment of outfits and underthings, any comfort a female could want had been stocked into it. Kagome emerged with two rolls of what he assumed to be chest bindings and a note. “Dear Sister, I had this wardrobe commissioned for myself several weeks ago; however, you have greater need of it than I do. I have taken the liberty to stock it with anything I think you might need in the weeks to come. Should something be missing or not to your liking simply let me know and we can go get things more to your liking. The chest and hip bindings I have supplied for you are enchanted to wrap themselves. Simply tell them to ‘bind’ or ‘release’ and they shall do so. Enjoy your ‘first’ night with my brother and I will see you come morning. Ikaru” Kagome read aloud blushing as she read the last line. She replaced the bindings and reached for a sleeping kimono. Sesshoumaru’s hand covered hers and when their eyes met she saw the heat and desire shining in his amber eyes. “Would you care to join me for a relaxing bath mate?” Sesshoumaru said with a mischievous smirk. “I know what you are planning Sesshoumaru, and I am still injured. So while a bath would be lovely anything else is out of the question.” Kagome said smirking at the hurt look Sesshoumaru was giving her as she walked past him. She didn’t see the smirk spread across his face after she had passed him. “We shall see mate…we shall see…” he whispered. Through the first part of the bath Sesshoumaru behaved and let Kagome fully cleanse herself. When they were finished scrubbing and had rinsed the soap from their bodies they slipped into the hot swirling waters of the bath. Sesshoumaru grabbed Kagome around her waist as she was moving to get into the bath and settled her into his lap. She ‘eeped’ at her sudden change in direction, but quickly settled herself into Sesshoumaru’s lap, pointedly ignoring his arousal resting against her thigh. Sesshoumaru had been looking at the numerous injuries that still covered Kagome’s body as she carefully scrubbed herself. His guilt weighed heavy on his heart that she had had to go through all of what she did alone. Luckily it appeared only a few of the injuries still looked like they still needed the stitches to hold them together. Soon the soothing heat of the bath caused his mate to relax in his hold. Slowly he began to rub small circles on her lower stomach, occasionally letting a finger ‘accidentally’ slip past her dark curls and across the little nubbin he knew would bring her pleasure and make her want him. Soon her face became flushed with something other than the heat of the water and a small gasp would escape her every time his finger slipped ‘accidentally’. Soon enough he quit accidentally playing with her body and boldly kept teasing the nubbin. Soon Kagome was grinding into his hand thoroughly enjoying his ministrations. While he kept his one hand busy buried in her nest of curls, he occupied his other hand with fondling her breast and occasionally tweaking her nipple while he trailed nips and kisses up the side of her neck paying special attention to his mark. All too soon he felt her body tense before she climaxed gasping his name as her body shook through her release. He kept it going as long as he could by continuing to stimulate her. When he finally allowed her to calm down she gave him a dirty look. “You don’t play fair you know that?” She almost growled at him. “I never claimed to play fair mate, now hush and let me show you how sorry I am and how happy I am that you fought so hard for me.” He smirked as he started to play with her body again. His beast sat quietly in the back of his consciousness, letting his rational self gently take their mate. Slowly Sesshoumaru worshiped her body with touches and kisses until she was thoroughly flustered. He smirked when she grabbed his hair and told him exactly what she wanted, and he was more than happy to comply. He flipped their positions so she was under him and slowly entered her, taking his time and being as gentile as he was able to. As he slowly rocked into her he whispered words of endearment and nibbled on her ear. One hand steadied him above her while the other switched between teasing her nipples and the nubbin between her legs. He ignored her please for him to go faster, determined to make love to her long and slow. He licked and kissed the places where she still had stitches causing her to gasp at the mixture of pleasure and pain it elicited in her. Finally he felt her walls begin to clamp down on him as the first sign her peak was upon her. He teased her nubbin with renewed energy as he felt his own release coming near. Soon they both gasped and cried out each other’s names. Sesshoumaru sunk his fangs deep into Kagome’s shoulder, and almost winced when he felt her teeth sink into him. They seemed to have gotten sharper since the last time they had coupled. He licked his mark until it closed then nuzzled it till his Kagome had drunk her fill of him, willing his strength into her. Her body shook as another orgasm ripped through her body. Gasping she smiled tenderly at him and hugged him close. When he pulled out of her the hot water swirled cleaning away the evidence of their little love making session, deciding it was time to get out of the hot water before they both became too lightheaded Sesshoumaru hoisted himself and his mate out of the bath and walked over to where they had set out the towels to dry themselves off. Sesshoumaru helped Kagome tie her new bandages and slip into her sleeping kimono, only letting his hand slip twice to fondle her. Her glare made it abundantly clear she had had enough for one night. Shrugging his shoulders in defeat he swept his mate up into his strong embrace and carried her to what would now be their bed. He laid her down carefully and stood back to admire her. He loved the way her still damp skin and hair glistened in the firelight. Moving over to the other side of the bed he spooned Kagome to his chest and inhaled deeply. His smirk only grew when he noticed the subtle changes slowly being revealed in her scent. His sister had spoken the truth and soon all would know that the west had a new heir on the way. Kagome’s even breathing and steady heart beat were like a balm to his senses and he let them carry him off to sleep. - The next morning Ikaru rose before the dawn from another night of lousy sleep. She grumbled as she went through her morning routine, finally making it to her office where a lovely mound of paperwork awaited her. The way she figured it Hanaka would not be too upset with her for doing paperwork, even though she was itching to make her normal morning trip to the dojo. When she made it to the other side of her desk her eyes widened at the mound of papers that had fallen behind her desk. She had only been gone for four days! How could so much happen in such a short time? Resigning herself to her fate she growled as she grabbed the first scroll in the stack on the floor beside her and began reading. Several hours later she felt the presence of her sister lingering outside the door. With a sigh she called out for her to enter, unfortunately it came out a little more aggressively than she had intended. Wincing she apologized when Kagome entered the room. “I’m sorry sister; this mountain of paperwork has worn my nerves thin this morning.” Ikaru said rubbing her pulsing temple. The scent of food hit her and her stomach decided to let itself be known with a loud growl. Kagome laughed and set the heavily laden tray of food down when Ikaru had cleaned a space in the mess of her desk. “Morning? Ikaru it is well into the afternoon. It seems you have made good progress on this mountain as you call it, would you like some assistance?” Kagome asked as Ikaru looked at her in shock and looked out the window to confirm the time. Cursing under her breath she rubbed her eyes and started digging into the mound of food. “If you wish sister, but I must warn you most of it is nonsense that never should have made it to my desk.” Ikaru growled at the offending pile through a mouthful of food. Kagome laughed at her antics and reached for a scroll. After reading through a few she had to admit Ikaru was right, most of them were petty complaints that Ikaru shouldn’t have had to deal with. While she allowed Ikaru to finish her meal she began to sort the remaining pile into ones she deemed needed Ikaru’s attention and the ones that could be put off till later. Once Ikaru finished her meal she looked on in amazement at the dramatically smaller pile Kagome had placed in front of her. She only had a small pile left to sort through. At her puzzled look Kagome smiled at Ikaru. “I used to help my father with his paperwork when it became backed up like this.” Kagome explained with a sad smile. “I am certain he appreciated the help, as do I. You will forgive me if I check your work this first time to be certain?” Ikaru said with a cocky smirk as Kagome laughed at her. “Do as you like, I certainly won’t take offence to it.” Kagome laughed as she finished sorting the last of the pile. Ikaru went through the pile Kagome had given to her as important matters and was impressed by the fact that all were in fact matters that did need her attention. She quickly made her way through the small pile, sending off messages as needed and giving her signature to the documents that needed it. As she worked through the larger stack she was impressed with Kagome’s organizational skills. The large stack quickly disappeared. When the last document was signed and a firm warning sent to her retainers to not allow such a large amount of frivolous matters reach her again, Kagome and Ikaru leaned back and stretched. “Sister you have my permission to come and assist me with my paperwork whenever you want. Never again will I question your superb skills in this department.” Ikaru chuckled. “I may take you up on that offer when I am further along in my pregnancy. As for right now I am looking forward to getting a clean bill of health from Hanaka so I can start working out again. All of this sitting still is driving me crazy.” Kagome said with a huff. “I completely agree with you sister, I want nothing more than to be able to do my morning workout, but I do not want to consider the scolding Hanaka will give me should she find out I did it.” Ikaru said with a sigh. “How much longer do you think it will be before she releases us?” Kagome said cocking her head to the side. “Well I know of no better way to find out than to go to her and have her check on our progress.” Ikaru said as she rose slowly letting the feeling come back into her legs. The needles that ran down her legs had her gasping with each step until the blood flow finally returned to normal and the tingling feeling stopped. Kagome laughed between her gasps as she walked the tingles out of her leg as well. The trip to the infirmary was a quiet one. Ikaru learned that Sesshoumaru had left Kagome reluctantly that morning to attend to his own duties. Ikaru chuckled evilly in her mind at the mound of paperwork her brother would have faced that morning, knowing there was a backlog of paperwork she simply couldn’t do for him. Hanaka immediately saw the girls when they entered the infirmary and carefully inspected all of their wounds. Hanaka nearly left to beat a certain pup when she noticed Kagome’s mating mark had been bitten into recently and a few new scratches had appeared on her hips. It took all her will power not to run off and give the horny pup a piece of her mind. The scent of the pup the girl had been carrying was growing stronger. The signs from the pup were also strong and healthy. Hanaka decided that the stitches could be removed from both women and told them both they should be fine to resume their normal duties in another two days. “Tell me sister, are those new scratches on your hips? I don’t recall them being there during our last bath together?” Ikaru smirked as Kagome turned a brilliant shade of red. “Oh uh…um…well I told him not to try anything…but then he did certain things and well…” Kagome blushed even harder and Ikaru burst out laughing. Hanaka kept a serious expression. “Milady what he did was very foolish, he should have restrained himself until your injuries were further along in the healing process.” Hanaka gently scolded the young woman; she knew how hard it was to avoid the advances of an amorous male. “Hanaka you realize he must have taken special care with her if those shallow scratches are all she has to show from their rut. Plus it was a necessity for the spells I cast over the pup to be released.” Ikaru said eyeing Hanaka critically. “That is hardly the point milady and you know it.” Hanaka turned her disapproving gaze on Ikaru, but she didn’t even flinch. “Hanaka he was unbelievably gentile with me last night, he even let me take my fill from him to help me recover faster.” Kagome said with pleading eyes. Hanaka sighed and gave in, she couldn’t stay angry at her for very long it seemed. “What’s done is done, however should the prince lay another claw on you in an amorous way until I have given you a clean bill of health I will have many unpleasant words with him.” Hanaka said with evil intent in her eyes. Both women glanced nervously at the other before saying farewell to Hanaka and quickly walking out of the infirmary. “So speaking of sleeping sister, how was your rest last night?” Ikaru asked once they had put a safe distance between them and the infirmary. “Once I made it clear to your brother that I was not going to allow him another round it was quite pleasant.” Kagome said a blush staining her cheeks. “I thought as much, I truly expected more of a ruckus last night. I even plugged my ears with cotton in preparation for it.” Ikaru said with a sly grin. She laughed when Kagome’s blush changed to a tomato red and spread down into her kimono. “I see you found my gift to you, tell me sister was everything to your liking?” “Oh uh…yes everything was lovely. Those bindings you left for me were especially useful, but your note said you had it commissioned for you, are you certain you won’t be needing it?” Kagome said returning to a more natural color now that the subject had changed to a much less personal topic. “Sister in all honesty I had no need of a new wardrobe. I had it commissioned to appease Lady Izayoi, she felt my current wardrobe was getting far too old and I should have a bigger one made to accommodate my larger wardrobe.” Ikaru said with a shrug, making the turn to take them out into the gardens. They found a nice shade tree to sit under and enjoyed the cooling fall air. “What did you do since you gave me the wardrobe then?” Kagome asked after a while when her curiosity finally got the better of her. “Well some of the outfits I had never worn I gave to you to stock the wardrobe. They were garments I had had for years and never had the opportunity or desire to wear. So that cleaned out a good portion of my personal wardrobe. I am certain many of them will compliment you nicely. However, if you are not pleased with them we can go shopping for new garments more to your liking.” Ikaru said relaxing against the tree. “Oh no, I liked most of the outfits when I got a good look at them this morning. So there is really no need to waste money on more. You even gave me workout outfits, sometimes I wonder if you are able to see the future, you always seem to know just what to do and what I need.” Kagome said with a small laugh. “I am hardly a prophet sister; I just know how hard it is to settle into a new place, and the basic necessities that are required to make the transition easier. In all honesty I am mimicking the things Sesshoumaru’s mother did when I came to live here permanently.” Ikaru said with a shrug. “Oh I forgot; that must have been hard on you.” Kagome said sympathy ringing clear in her voice. “In more ways than you can imagine sister.” Ikaru sighed. “Tell me how did you find my brothers room?” “It was nice, definitely a males room though. He gave me permission to add some personal effects of my own to help me feel more at home there. The layout is exactly like your room, which was extremely helpful when I felt ill this morning. I couldn’t help but notice some of the designs and arrangements in his room are the same in yours?” Kagome said in a pondering way. “Well that is to be expected. Mama decorated both of our rooms and neither of us has the heart to change what she so carefully put together.” Ikaru said avoiding looking into Kagome’s eyes. “Then how can I in good conscience change anything?” Kagome said looking sad. “Kagome it is a huge step my brother is taking allowing you to change his room. I believe he has faith you will take his feelings into consideration and only add not subtract from the room.” Ikaru said patting her hand reassuringly. “Would you help me, I don’t think I can do it by myself.” Kagome said looking at Ikaru hopefully. “Very well sister, I will help keep you in check so you don’t change things too drastically.” Ikaru said with a laugh. “How did you know…” Kagome said with a cute pout. “Call it sisterly intuition. Now how about we go look around and make a list of the things you would like to do.” Ikaru said slowly rising and helping Kagome to her feet. The rest of the afternoon was spent with the two women bouncing ideas around and making a list of the desired changes. By the time for the evening meal came around both women were beginning to yawn as they made their way down to the dining hall. They were not the first to arrive, Inuyasha and Rin along with Izayoi and Inutaishio were sitting at the long table laughing and enjoying a cup of tea. “Ah there you two are! I was just about to leave to come fetch you. Come have a seat and enjoy a cup of tea while we wait for that son of mine!” Inutaishio said laughing heartily. Both women laughed as they took their seats at the table. “Oh before I forget, there will be a large gathering of local and foreign dignitaries later this week. We will be holding a party for them, and I thought while we were at it we could double it as your premiere party Kagome.” Inutaishio said with a smile which faded as he watched Kagome pale at the news. “What is the matter my dear?” “Oh nothing nothing….it is just that I have never been very good at parties. I usually tend to make a thorough fool of myself.” Kagome said hanging her head. “You have nothing to worry over sister. We will not let you face them alone; the only thing you need to worry over is which group of visitors arrives first. As it will depend on them as to what we are wearing to this gathering.” At Kagome’s confused look Ikaru elaborated. “Tradition dictates that the females of the group hosting these gatherings must wear the clothing of the first group of foreign dignitaries to arrive. It is seen as a gesture of peace that the females of the house honor the foreign visitors by wearing their traditional garb.” “For the moment it looks as though it will be either the Roman or Greek dignitaries to be the first to arrive.” Inutaishio said casually. “It could be worse; the outfits are nearly the same for either group.” Ikaru said with a shrug. “Wait where is Rome and Greece? I have never heard of these lands.” Kagome said confusion ringing clear in her voice. “They are far to the west, and they are not even coming the greatest distance of all the groups attending. I hear the Scottish clan is sending emissaries as well.” Inutaishio said chuckling at the wide eyed expression Kagome was giving him. She jumped at Ikaru’s growl. “Those Scottish dogs are a group to be watched carefully. They think themselves the greatest gift to women to ever grace this plain of existence.” Ikaru growled remembering the many unwanted advances pushed upon her over the years. “You will need to watch your backside while around them sister, or I can guarantee you will be the victim of many an unwanted grope regardless of who you are mated to.” “Surely they cannot be all bad.” Kagome said eyeing Ikaru wearily. “No you are correct, there are a few decent men in the bunch, but more often than not the majority are womanizers.” Ikaru said. “The women will be who you need to be aware of Kagome. Sesshoumaru has been a highly sought after male for many years now, and many of the women in attendance will not look kindly upon the one who finally won him.” Izayoi said. The note of seriousness had Kagome becoming pale again. “Will I be forced to fight again?” She said. “No, unless they attack first in which case you will not be fighting alone. However, it is more likely that they will attack you with words not claws. In which case feel free to put them in their place.” Sesshoumaru said finally walking into the room. Kagome and Rin smiled radiantly at him, he returned their smiles as he took his seat by Kagome. “He is right sister. You are now a daughter of the East and West. Stand proudly and if necessary we will all stand behind you and support your claim.” Ikaru said with a cocky smirk. “So dear when is this party supposed to take place?” Izayoi said giving her mate a small smile, the side of her lip twitching in aggravation. She really hated it when he sprung these parties on her. “Well I was thinking on the last day of the gathering dearest.” Inutaishio said chuckling nervously. “Well that doesn’t leave us much time to prepare does it?” Izayoi said, her kind smile hardly masking her rising ire. Inutaishio wisely excused himself and beat a hasty retreat. He almost made it to the door before he got clobbered with a plate half full of various foods, most of which were sticky. He yipped and ran out the door; before it closed behind him he heard Ikaru chastise Izayoi for wasting perfectly good food and recommended her to throw an empty goblet at him the next time. He sighed and walked with his head hung in shame back to his chambers to wash away the sticky mess slowly working its way down his back, the servants wisely remained silent. Back in the dining hall the children were laughing at the scene that just played out before them, Sesshoumaru and Ikaru seemed unfazed by it, and Izayoi was fuming and frantically scratching out a list of things to get started for the party. Kagome sat there flabbergasted ignoring her quickly cooling food. Rin, who was sitting beside her, poked her arm when her silent giggles subsided. Knocked out of her daze Kagome looked down at Rin who was making eating motions to her. She smiled and kissed the little girls forehead. Ikaru saw the little scene play out and smiled softly. “You will come to learn sister that such occurrences are not uncommon at the dining table. Papa often leaves wearing some portion of the meal. Izayoi has quite good aim when she is angry.” Ikaru chuckled at Izayoi’s indignant ‘hmph!’ “Oto-san often forgets to tell her about these sorts of things, as Lady of the West it is her duty to do most of the planning for such events. I personally think he likes to raise her ire and has been doing it on purpose for some time.” Sesshoumaru continued where Ikaru had left off. Kagome laughed as Izayoi continued her frantic list making and finished her meal. Ikaru once again insisted she drink several glasses of blood with dinner. Only when she finally complained that she would pop if she drank another drop did Ikaru relent. Sesshoumaru rose from his seat and offered his hand to Kagome who gratefully took it and pulled herself up. Inuyasha perked up and asked if Rin could once again stay with him the night. “Rins’ chambers will take several more days to be completed; I see no harm in her staying with you till then Inuyasha.” Sesshoumaru said looking to Kagome for her approval. She quickly nodded and added that he must be certain to visit Hanaka before they headed to bed. Inuyasha was quick to agree and quickly scooped Rin up and ran off to see the healer. “Your brother seems quite taken with Rin.” Kagome smiled. “He has taken it upon himself to protect her.” Sesshoumaru said simply as he led Kagome out of the dining hall after they had said their good nights. They went out into one of the adjacent gardens for an evening stroll. “You are alright with that?” Kagome said raising an eyebrow at him. “For the moment it is convenient not to share a chamber with her as I can monopolize you as I please. It is not that I do not care for her, it is just that there are some things a child should not witness adults doing.” Sesshoumaru said a very faint blush staining his cheeks. “Ah, but you are on probation from such things remember.” Kagome laughed at his pout and ‘hmph.’ “Hanaka would be most cross if she were to discover you doing such things.” “Hn…yes she made it quite clear in her visit to me earlier what was permissible in your condition and what was not.” Sesshoumaru said with a grimace. His ears were still ringing with the scolding he had received from Hanaka early on in the day. “Sesshoumaru, I’m scared.” Kagome said leaning on his arm; it took a great deal of courage to say those words. She was always the one who had to be strong beside her father in her home, such responsibility was laid on her shoulders at a very young age. It was a duty she readily accepted to protect those she loved, for to show fear would mean death in her former occupation. Sesshoumaru’s arm slipped around her shoulder and hugged her close to his side. “There is nothing to fear koi, my family and I will be there to support you through whatever may come our way in the future.” Sesshoumaru said hugging her into his side more firmly, not liking the scent of fear marring her scent. “However, my okaa-san once told me it is alright to be afraid. At the time I laughed at her and told her I feared nothing, she laughed back and told me one day I would understand when I had a family of my own. She was right, I have learned fear since meeting you, but I have learned it is not always the hindrance I thought it to be.” At Kagome’s confused look he chuckled and continued. “This fear and love I hold for you and the little one gives me a strength I have never before possessed.” Kagome smiled as she snuggled into his side as they finished their walk and then went to check on the children before heading to their chambers for the night. This time, however, Sesshoumaru merely held Kagome as they both slipped into the land of dreams. - The next few days were a flurry of activity. The first group to arrive at the castle had been the Greeks, beating the Romans by only a few hours. Introductions were brief and Kagome was being given only quick briefings about the members present in the emissary parties. By the third day Hanaka had given both Ikaru and Kagome permission to do light morning workouts. The women woke early eager to stretch out their newly healed muscles. They surprised each other by choosing the same style short yukata. Laughing as they headed down to the dojo both women worked up a nice sweat in their own routines. They felt much better as they grabbed towels as they exited the dojo and headed back into the castle. They had only made it about two steps into the entrance hall when a voice boomed over the crowd. Ikaru froze and was fighting a growl while she pulled a startled Kagome behind her, whispering to Kagome that the Scottish dignitaries had arrived. “Well lads if it isn’t the most lovely lass e’er to grace these halls. Oi lads look at the sweet lil thing the lass has behind her.” Said a large male in a heavy accent. He had dusty light brown hair, deeply tanned skin, and piercing green eyes. When he made an approach to scoop them both up into a hug Ikaru let loose a vicious growl and jumped out of the reach of the over eager male. “Connor your being an arse again. Ye know the lass has ne’er appreciated your advances, ‘twould be best to just let her be.” Another large male with blond hair, the same tanned skin, and bright blue eyes said roughly. “Your words ring true Lord Dagley, nor do I take kindly to his uncouth remarks about my sister.” Ikaru said viciously growling at the still approaching male, her fangs lengthening and eyes tinting pink. “Conner I’m warnin’ ye, stand down or I’ll no’ be responsible for whatever happens to ye. I’ll do nothin to stop it either.” Lord Dagley said in warning to the smitten male. He knew Connor’s weakness for beautiful women would one day cost him dearly, and from the look the young princess was giving him, his friend was in for a serious fight if he kept pushing the boundary. Though he himself was an unmated male, and would have been blind not to see the beauty held by the two women, the one the unclaimed princess was protecting so viciously was obviously already taken. Any fool would have noticed this, however Connor wasn’t exactly thinking with the head on his shoulders at the moment. Finally Connor took one step too close. The rest of the crowd of various dignitaries were used to the amorous male having his ass handed to him repeatedly by the princess who was obviously not appreciative of his constant advances. When Connor got within striking distance, Ikaru didn’t disappoint the waiting crowd. However, she did shock them with the viciousness of her attack. Normally she would just knock the idiot out and walk away, but this time she was determined to teach the amorous mutt a lesson he would not soon forget. Her claws left deep grooves in his unarmored chest; he didn’t even have time to recover before her knee made solid contact with his groin. He fell to his knees only to have his nose become intimately acquainted with her knee as well. When he fell to the ground unconscious; Ikaru grabbed the front of his ruined kilt lifting him until his throat was exposed to her waiting fangs. She was rearing her head back for the final strike, the sweet smell of poison filling the air, when the silent female she had been protecting suddenly yelled at her. “IKARU STOP!” Kagome yelled an instant before she ripped the males’ throat out. Ikaru’s fangs hung precariously a few centimeters from Connor’s jugular. Reluctantly Ikaru withdrew, dropping the male unceremoniously to the floor. When he groaned she gave him another swift kick to the groin before moving back to Kagome’s side, making a show of licking the blood off her claws. “Dagley what the bloody ‘ell just happened?! I was at the other end of the hall when it seemed all ‘ell broke loose.” A third and fourth male showed up behind Lord Dagley. He sighed as he looked to his fallen comrade. They two new males looked like brothers, they had the same dark hair and brown eyes. “It seems Douglas, that the lass Connor is always harassing when we come ‘ere had finally had enough of his shenanigans. Damn near killed him, ‘twas the wee lass o’er there that saved his life.” Dagley said watching Ikaru order the some guards to take Connor to the medical wing. “And ye did nothin’ to stop ‘er?” The last male said. “Aye, I warned the fool no’ to be pushin’ ‘er. He dinna listen to me warnin Gavin.” Dagley said sadly. Neither of the males seemed inclined to pursue justice for their friend. Ikaru slowly approached the males with Kagome in tow. “Lord Dagley, I wish to introduce you to my sister. This is the Lady Kagome, mate to my brother Prince Sesshoumaru. Kagome these are the remaining Scottish dignitaries. Lords Dagley, Gavin, and Douglas.” Ikaru said pointing out each lord in turn. “The fool being carried to the infirmary is Lord Connor.” “It is a pleasure to meet you all, I am sorry for your friend. I have been on the receiving end of Lady Ikaru’s claws and know it is not a pleasant experience.” Kagome said with a bow. “Nay, ye needn’t apologize lass. Connor knew what he was gettin’ himself into. Let’s just hope this lil tift finally knocks some sense into that thick skull of his.” Dagley bowed to the women. “When he comes to, I’ll have him formally apologize to ye.” “We must take our leave gentleman; feel free to visit your friend any time you wish. We will see you at the evening meal.” Ikaru said ushering Kagome toward the hallway and away from the crowd. “What the hell was that about Ikaru!” Kagome said when they were out of earshot of the crowd. “Connor is the worst of the Scots. He has been asking for such a beating for quite a few years. Forgive me but I used his slight of you as my excuse to attack him. I would not let him near you for all the gold in these lands. He is one male who never learned that no means no. Dagley is the only one of the bunch who seems to know how to keep his hands to himself. The brothers Gavin and Douglas have a very specific type of woman they target, and are otherwise perfect gentlemen. You don’t fit their tastes, so they should behave well enough around you. Connor is the only one to be wary of, in a way we are lucky that it is this group we are dealing with. Most of this bunch at least knows how to behave in public.” Ikaru explained as they walked. She pulled Kagome into her chambers when they finally reached them. “Ikaru you nearly killed him, has all he’s done warrant such an extreme act?” Kagome said as she let Ikaru lead her to the bathing chamber. “Connor is an arrogant ass, and has made no secret of the fact that he wishes to bed me. He even approached papa to get permission to court me once. Papa turned him down; he has never stopped trying to win me over since. His tactics have not always been the most honorable, as I said this has been building up for quite some time.” Ikaru said shying away from the topic. “What did he do Ikaru?” Kagome said as they slipped into the hot spring. Her tone left little room for argument. “He once tried to force himself upon me at a party. He thought better of it at the last moment. He tried the same tricks a few more times. Then he tried more conventional methods like flowers and sweets. Luckily for him Papa never found out about the attacks.” Ikaru said not meeting Kagome’s eyes. “Why didn’t you ever tell him?” Kagome asked moving to sit next to Ikaru. “It was my fight; I didn’t think I needed Papa to protect me against him. Today I proved myself right.” Ikaru said her eyes flashing red for an instant. “Ikaru you must be careful, he wasn’t prepared for your attack today. He may try to get back at you later.” Kagome said in warning. “He may try but he won’t have his strength back for several weeks. I made sure of it. When I clawed his chest I made sure to give him a taste of some of my poison. It will take him several weeks to recover from it. I adjusted it to where it won’t kill him; I try not to cross that line whenever I can.” Ikaru said with a smug smirk. “You don’t seem to have very good luck with men it seems, but at least that idiot won’t be able to pester us for a few days.” Kagome said relaxing next to Ikaru. Ikaru ‘Hnned’ next to her before leaving the spring quickly followed by Kagome. The two of them dressed and left to once again work on paperwork in Ikaru’s office. The evening meal came and Connor, true to Dagley’s word, apologized to Kagome and Ikaru. His nose was broken, and his voice was still a little high, but he managed to not let everyone see how ill he was. Ikaru gave him a knowing look periodically through the whole meal. Gossip slipped around the table like water, much of which was about the fight that morning and how easily Connor had gone down. Connor’s anger seethed just below the surface as each snide remark passed him about how easily he had been brought down by the lass. Well he would show them, he thought. By the time the meal had ended the moon was rising in the sky and Kagome was extremely tired. Most of the females she had met the past few days had been kind enough, some were obviously faking it, but several seemed to be genuinely happy for her. Sesshoumaru or Ikaru had been by her side for the whole day, she was ready for the day to be over. She and Sesshoumaru made their excuses and left to see to the children before retiring for the night. Ikaru was debating on going back to her nightly training with Heero, in her opinion he still had much to master, but she was uncertain if she could risk injury with the way Connor had been eyeing her over dinner. Deciding she needed the stress relief she summoned a maid to tell Heero to meet her in the usual spot in an hours’ time. She arrived early; a feeling of comfortable familiarity settled around her as the sleeveless yukata she used for training settled around her as she stretched. This caused the hem to slip up her thigh in an enticing manner. Her leather slippers were soft and comfortable, the ties hugged her calves. Yes, this was exactly what she needed to calm herself again. She heard his hurried footsteps before she saw him. He came stumbling into the clearing in his usual outfit of training hakama and a leather vest. From his disheveled appearance he appeared to have gotten ready in a rush as he quickly adjusted his clothes and hair when he noticed her staring with a cocked eyebrow. “My apologies milady, I was not expecting your summons so soon and was unprepared, forgive me, it will not happen again.” Heero said bowing. The silence that greeted him made him extremely nervous. “What, pray tell, Heero made you late this time?” Ikaru asked, keeping her expression and voice carefully neutral, she was teasing him, but he didn’t need to know that yet. “I…I was asleep milady…tonight was one of my nights off.” Heero said cringing at the excuse. It was true that with all of the excitement of all the foreign dignitaries visiting that shifts were longer and more strenuous than usual, but that was little excuse not to be ready at all times when summoned. “Asleep hmm…you seem perfectly awake at the moment. Perhaps you were entertaining company of the female variety, there are many lonely females roaming the palace with all these dignitaries visiting.” Ikaru smirked as his back stiffened, thinking she had hit the nail on the head. The anger in his shining in his eyes when he raised his head was a mystery to her. “No milady, I will never allow any random female to grace my bed just to satisfy some temporary physical desires. I happen to be quite a heavy sleeper on my first night off duty and it took the maid a good half hour to rouse me.” Heero said thinking of the poor maid that had been sent to rouse him. She was just about to become distraught when he finally woke up and it was a good fifteen minutes before he was coherent enough to understand that he had been summoned. The poor thing was near a panic attack when he finally pushed her out of his chambers to get dressed, he had to send her to the kitchens to get a strong glass of liquor to calm her. He ended up stumbling over his chair and falling to the floor. There went another five minutes while he nursed his sore foot, another five to get dressed and try to tie his hair back while running to the training field. He just didn’t have any luck when it came to these training sessions with Lady Ikaru. He noticed her surprised look and remembered the harsh tone he had used with her just a moment prior. His face paled and he began to stutter apologies until she raised her hand and he stood there silently awaiting her verdict. “No Heero, it is I who should apologize; I was meaning it all in jest, I meant no harm. I was wrong to assume you are like many of the men who are frivolous with their women, when I know next to nothing about you.” Ikaru said bowing her head to him. He had to fight the urge to pass out. The Princess of the Western Lands just apologized to him, and to beat it all she bowed to him…him a lowly solider! He missed her announcement that it was time to begin, and just narrowly missed her punch to his midsection. He jumped back looking at her with shock. She nodded her approval and stuck again. This night Heero never managed to land any attacks, but he had managed to avoid more of Ikaru’s attacks than usual. He realized then that she wasn’t in this fight wholeheartedly, she was holding back more than usual. When they stopped for a breather he decided he might as well ask what was the matter. “If I may milady, you seem unusually distracted tonight, is something troubling you?” Heero asked praying she didn’t lash out at him. All she did was sigh and let her shoulders slump like she was carrying the weight of the world on them. “It is nothing you could help with Heero. Memories plague me of times long since passed, none of which are pleasant. I thought a good spar would work them out but apparently that is not the case.” Ikaru said with a sigh as she drank some water. “Do they have anything to do with your fight with the Scottish dignitary this morning?” Heero ventured a guess. “Some yes, some no. That idiot has been a thorn in my side for a far shorter time than another male. Though he has had more opportunity to cause trouble than the more troublesome male, he is far less dangerous.” Ikaru said mumbling. “I beg to differ, milady. It is because he has more opportunity to cause trouble that he is all the more dangerous. He can get to you when the other male is kept at bay.” Heero said in a deadly serious voice. Ikaru looked up at him in surprise and laughed, but it was a laugh that was lacking any warmth. “I suppose that is true Heero, but this male I can handle in a fight, the other one I am not so certain about.” Ikaru said looking thoughtful. “Please milady, do not underestimate a male that has been humiliated. His anger can give him great strength at times when you least expect it. Trust me I speak from experience.” Heero said turning away from Ikaru. She looked at his tense shoulders and understood. “What happened to you that gives you this experience Heero, I find it hard to believe that you are speaking about your personal actions.” Ikaru said as she walked around to face him. “I do not wish to unburden my troubles on you.” Heero said weakly trying to avoid the subject. He tried to turn from her again only to be stopped by her hand on his shoulder making him turn to face her again. “It is not a burden to hear the troubles of others; it actually is one of the few gifts my okaa-san managed to pass onto me before her passing.” Ikaru said giving him a sad smile. He thought selfishly for a moment how he wanted to be the one to give her a reason to smile in happiness. “It is not a happy story.” He warned as he walked out into the field and took a seat looking up at the waning moon. “I did not expect it to be.” Ikaru said taking a seat beside him. She saw him hang his head and sigh in defeat before looking up at the moon again with a faraway look in his eyes. “Many seasons ago when I was a young pup, I witnessed the murder of one of my siblings by a scorned lover. My sister was seeing a low ranking lord in a neighboring town and was considering mating him. My sister was strong and beautiful and sought after by many males in the province, but she had chosen the lower lord over all the others. She was not aware of his unfaithful ways when she chose him, thinking herself to be the only one he had ever bedded. When he made it clear that he would continue to bed as many women as he liked after they were mated, my sister changed her mind and revoked her mating offer. The lord became the laughing stock of the local lords, and the women that had flocked to him in droves before then refused to come. He was abandoned and alone, his humiliation turned to anger and he turned that anger toward my sister. One day when she had taken me out into the town to look at the local vendors wares he attacked. He was dirty and disheveled and smelled of refuse. My sister managed to throw me to safety before defending against the vicious attack. She started to get the upper hand and his rage grew giving him a terrible strength. He overpowered and raped my sister before my eyes screaming ‘Mine!’ over and over again. When he reached his end he slit my sisters’ throat pulling out of her laughing his triumph. I saw red and attacked. He never knew what hit him. He was dead before he reached the ground. Some of the vendors helped me carry her body back to our home. My parents were part of an arranged marriage and never made any secret of the fact that they didn’t care much for each other, but I remember the sight like it was yesterday, when they saw the dead body of my sister. My okaa-san’s wail filled the whole house and my oto-san did not try to hide his tears as he pulled my okaa-sans resisting form from my sisters’ body. It is the only time I can recall him holding her like that in all the time they have been mated.” Heero finished, never noticing how his claws had dug into the unresisting earth leaving deep groves in their wake. He jumped when he felt the princesses’ hand cover his clenched one. She never looked at him only offering him silent support, and he felt the tears prick the back of his eyes and begin to fall silently. After a while his tears slowed then stopped, only then did Ikaru speak. “I now see how wrong I was in my jesting earlier, forgive me Heero. Your sister must have been very dear to you.” He nodded silently. “It was a very fitting tale, but you should know I leave little to chance. In my battle I poisoned Lord Connor. He will be sick for several weeks because of it and hopefully wiser by the time he regains his strength.” She kept a somber expression. “From what I have heard about Lord Connor milady, I find that very hard to believe. I believe he may try even harder when he regains his strength.” Heero said concern lacing his voice. He didn’t fail to notice that the comforting weight of Ikaru’s hand had yet to leave his. “It is possible; Lord Connor is a persistent bastard. I will be on my guard though Heero. Only a fool would choose to ignore a warning after hearing the backstory that cost so much to tell.” Ikaru said giving Heero’s hand a gentile squeeze before rising. She dusted herself off and told him they were through for the night. As she was turning to leave he grabbed her hand turning her around to face him and placed a gentile kiss on the back of her hand before letting it go to fall back to her side. “Thank you for listening to my story milady, it brings me a peace of mind I have not had in many seasons.” He smiled a sad smile and bowed before leaving. Ikaru watched him walk away for a few moments before heading back to her chambers. She walked over to her window and looked up at the waning moon while holding the hand Heero had so gently held and kissed just a few moments before. She noticed a lingering warmth where his lips had touched her hand. Ignoring it she slipped into her sleeping kimono, downed her potion and let sleep claim her. In another wing of the castle where the guests resided the Scottish dignitaries were congregated in their leaders’ room having a heated discussion of their own. “That bitch made a fool outta me! Did ye see tha’ damned smirk she had on her face all during supper!” Conner fumed. “Ye brought it on yourself lad, I tried to warn ye but ye dinna heed me warnin’.” Dagley said to his fuming friend. “Aye lad, ye ken the lass dislikes yer advances. She hasno’ made a secret of the fact yer advances aggravate her. Most likely lad, tis only by the lasses good graces tha’ ye hae not had yer arse handed to ye before this.” Gavin said; he was the more vocal of the two brothers. Douglas tended to let his actions speak for him except when it came to wooing a woman. However, this time he decided to add his two cents to the conversation. “Connor lad, leave the lass be. Ye dinna seem to realize jus’ how close ye came to meetin’ yer maker this mornin’. Had the wee lass she was protectin’ no’ called out we would be sendin’ yer remains off about now. Face the hard truth lad, yer no match for the lass. Look at yerself, yer barely standin’ on yer own!” Douglas said motioning to how pale and shaky Conner was. “Tis the bitches poison. Little whore pumped me full of it.” Connor growled finally giving up the appearance and falling into a nearby chair. “Lad she dinna pump ye full of anythin’; the lass is well ken for the toxicity of her poison, an’ for her superb control of it. Ye cheated death once again lad, the lass is givin’ ye a final warnin’ I’d say. Best heed it an’ back off.” Dagley said the last as more of an order than a friendly warning. Connor was knocking a little too closely to deaths door for his liking. He was a good man most of the time, a little too loose with his women for Dagley’s taste, but when it came to the Princess of the West Connor stooped to new levels of stupid. “Ye dinna understand Dagley, I want her. More than I e’er wanted any woman before. Her turnin’ me down time and again hurts me pride. Does she no’ realize I care for her? She’s either blind or frigid.” Connor said hanging his head. It shot up though when Dagley burst out laughing. “Lad ye say ye want the lass. Well get in line. Yer no’ the first fool to fall for her. I’d wager a guess the lass kens yer feelings, an’ for all the time ye ken her she has been tryin’ to let ye down easy. She finally had enough today though and let ye down hard.” Dagley said turning serious. “How would ye ken that the lass kens?” Connor said looking suspiciously at Dagley. “Cause lad, once many seasons ago I took a fancy to the lass myself. Asked to court her right an’ proper, an’ she turned me down flat, but I took notice how sad the poor lass looked as she turned me down. Like it hurt her to turn me down, noticed a short while later she turned another male down the same way with the same look. She has a big heart I’d say. Ne’er truly got over her myself I think, but I ken when to leave well enough alone.” Dagley said looking pointedly at Connor. The three other men sat silently as their leader revealed his secret. Douglas and Gavin sat with their mouths hanging open after he was done, and Connor looked even more pale than he had before. “Ye knew I fancied the lass yet ye still tried to take her for yerself?” Connor said quietly. “She’s no’ claimed lad, an’ like I said ‘twas many seasons ago, before ye started after her seriously. Now lad I tell ye this in all seriousness, leave the lass be. She’ll not be choosin’ ye, an’ if ye keep this up she’ll hae e’ery right to take yer life, an’ the lads an’ I willna be commin’ to avenge ye.” Dagley said watching as Connor’s shoulders slumped as he nodded. With the conversation done the men bid each other good night and left for their own chambers. Connor knew his friend spoke the truth but giving up on the princess would be far easier said than done. The next few days seemed to fly by for the inhabitants of the castle. Ikaru and Kagome had taken to doing their morning work out together before having a quick bath and attending to the necessary paperwork for the day, their afternoons consisted of continuing introducing Kagome to the dignitaries present, those still arriving, and keeping Izayoi from slaughtering anyone, namely Inutaishio, while she was trying to get everything ready for the party. Finally on the morning of the party Izayoi managed to get the last of the details ironed out. Breathing a sigh of relief, she collapsed in Ikaru’s chambers with Kagome, Ikaru and the children. “It’s done. Finally it’s all done!” Izayoi said happily. “It looks like it will be a very nice party.” Kagome complimented. “I like the decorations okaa-san! Too bad Rin and I don’t get to go.” Inuyasha said with a pout. “It will go on well past your bed time. Don’t worry, you will soon be old enough to attend, then you will learn just how boring these things can be.” Ikaru laughed. “As much as I hate to admit it, Ikaru is right. These sorts of parties usually end up being extremely boring. Do you have the robes ready Ikaru?” Izayoi sighed. “Yes, we should probably start getting ready soon. A nice long bath is just what we need to relax before the party.” Ikaru said with a smile, and everyone quickly agreed heading off for Ikaru’s bathing chambers. Down the hall Sesshoumaru was in his father’s chamber discussing the party that evening. “Ikaru should have an escort. It would keep unwanted suitors from swarming her as usual.” Sesshoumaru said with a sigh. “You are right son, but you know how stubborn she is. I doubt that little spectacle earlier this week will deter many suitors, it might even make some more determined. I would prefer to have this party end without bloodshed.” Inutaishio said rubbing his face and sighing. He walked over to the window and looked out. His window looked out over one of the many gardens surrounding the palace, he noticed several guards patrolling discreetly through the garden. One of the young men caught his eye. “I believe musuko I have just found the answer to our problems.” A few minutes later a confused Heero was entering Lord Inutaishios’ office. The prince of the West sat to one side of the low table and Lord Inutaishio was sitting behind the desk smiling at him. He was beyond nervous, but he bowed appropriately and waited to see why he had been summoned. “Well my boy, you have been spending quite a few nights with my daughter. Tell me what do you think of her?” Inutaishio had to hold back his laugh as the boy turned white as a sheet. Sesshoumaru watched Heero have his panic attack with an impassive face. “She is a great warrior milord, I have learned a great deal from her in our training sessions.” Heero answered carefully. “Surely you have noticed more than her warrior skills?” Inutaishio teased. “One would have to be blind not to milord, however it is not appropriate to think such ways about one’s superiors.” Heero replied. “A fine answer my boy! You will be perfect for this mission!” Inutaishio said clapping his hands. “Mission milord?” Heero asked confusion leaking into his voice. “Yes my boy, you see tonight we are having a very big party and my daughter unfortunately has no one to escort her, your mission will be to be her escort. Keep any unwanted suitors away, attend to her needs, and make yourself scarce when needed. She may be resistant to the idea at first; however, we are hopeful that because of her extended time with you recently she will be more cooperative.” Inutaishio’s face changed from a calm smile to a serious expression in a heartbeat. Heero suddenly realized the seriousness of the situation. “Milord, are you certain I am suitable for this mission?” Heero asked. “My boy, had you answered that last question with anything other than what you did I would have to agree that you would not be suitable. However, you answered truthfully, acknowledging her beauty but recognizing her as your superior was exactly the answer I was looking for.” Inutaishio smiled. “As for the first question, I think you may have fibbed a little on that one. I have kept an eye on many of your training sessions and I know for a fact you receive quite a thorough beating most nights.” “True milord, but I attempt to learn from my mistakes, and have been receiving fewer bruises as of late.” Heero said proudly. “Very good my boy, now we have to get you ready for the party, the women are no doubt getting ready as we speak.” Inutaishio said. “Oto-san does he have anything appropriate to wear?” Sesshoumaru spoke for the first time. “You are right musuko…I know! He could borrow something from you; you both appear to be about the same size.” Inutaishio suggested. “I suppose that could work.” Sesshoumaru said in a nonchalant way. “Milord really it isn’t necessary, I assure you.” Heero said trying not to be a bother. “Nonsense my boy, I know for a fact you do not have anything suitable to wear to this kind of party.” Inutaishio said getting up and walking over to Heero patting him roughly on the back and practically dragging him off to Sesshoumarus’ chambers with Sesshoumaru following behind smirking. As they passed Ikaru’s room they heard the women talking excitedly. After a nice long soak in the bath the women were ready to start the process of getting ready. Inuyasha and Rin were set on Ikaru’s bed as she pulled out what looked like three long lengths of silk. “They call these chiton’s I believe, they are wrapped around the body and pined with brooches at the shoulders and hips. There are also matching shawls.” Ikaru said laying the colorful silks out on the bed. One length was shades of gold, it started out the palest cream and ended in a deep gold. Another started out the palest blue and ended in a midnight color. The last started out an extremely light green and ended in the deepest forest green any of the three females had seen. The shawls matched the darkest colors on the lengths of silk. “Typically you can’t wear any chest bindings with these garments, but over the years I have learned a few tricks.” Ikaru said with a smirk. She handed Izayoi a length of chest binding material. “Simply tell it ‘Bind Chiton style.’ Izayoi dropped the robe she had wrapped around herself and said the spell. The material spun around her in an intricate pattern, finally settling in an odd pattern around her chest. “Oh my! Would you look at that!” Izayoi smiled. Ikaru handed her the length of gold silk and quickly showed her how to wrap the long length of material. When she was done the soft cream color started at the top creating an elegant dip at her cleavage. It was pinned at her shoulders leaving her arms bare. A length of matching cord was wrapped around her middle, binding the silk from just under her breasts to her waist. The way the silk laid the color gradually grew darker until it reached its darkest where the color pooled at her ankles. The look was completed with a set of matching sandals that clasped at the ankle, and the shawl. When Ikaru said she was done getting dressed, Izayoi moved over to Ikaru’s vanity and began pinning her hair up in an elaborate pattern. While she was doing that Ikaru dressed Kagome the same way she had Izayoi. Ikaru chose the green material for Kagome, leaving the blue for herself. When Ikaru had dressed herself she set Kagome down in a chair and started to brush her hair. “Now what to do with your hair…No you know what, I think leaving it down will look more natural on you. This way you won’t be totally out of your comfort zone.” Ikaru said as he brushed Kagome’s hair to smooth the curls into waves. “As for the makeup,” she said when she was done with the hair, “a little bit of eye makeup to accentuate those lovely eyes of yours and a set of earrings and a necklace and you will look perfect.” Ikaru said and went about brushing some gray powder over Kagome’s eyes and pinning a set of dangling emerald earrings into her ears and latching a matching emerald pendant around her neck. Ikaru matched the eye makeup on herself but substituted sapphire jewelry to match her outfit. Kagome finally got the courage to look in the mirror. She gasped at her reflection. The greens of the gown complimented the coppery tone her skin still held from her time on the island, and the gray eye powder made the blue of her eyes more intense. The only thing that made her self-conscious were the numerous scars covering her body. Her copper colored skin made the fine pale lines of the old scars and the still pink lines of her most recent ones more pronounced. She unconsciously reached up and tried to cover her arms. Ikaru’s hand landed on hers’ and she spoke gently. “Be proud of your scars sister. To demons scars are badges of honor we most often times don’t get to show off for very long.” Ikaru smiled at her, and Kagome noticed the scars visible from under Ikaru’s gown were displayed proudly. Pink lines contrasted against her pale skin. She suddenly felt better about herself and her self-consciousness faded away. “Thank you Ikaru, I suppose I’m just getting a little nervous.” Kagome said with a weak laugh. “There is nothing to be nervous about dear. You have made your presence well known these past few days. Most of the dignitaries will most likely ignore you, and besides the occasional irate female you should have quite the boring evening.” Izayoi said setting the last pin into her hair. She had chosen to mimic a hairstyle common to the Greek women to match her gown. She smiled at her reflection and turned to spin for the approval her audience. Inuyasha and Rin had sat quietly watching the transformations and clapped as soon as Izayoi was finished and spinning for them. Kagome spun as well earning a silent laugh and loud clap from Rin. When Ikaru finished brushing her hair she announced it was time for the children to head to bed. “Awww… but onee-san it’s still early!” Inuyasha wined. He looked to Rin for support, but she was in the middle of a large yawn. His ears drooped as he realized it was pointless to keep arguing and carefully grabbed Rin and headed out of the room after they had said their goodnights. A few minutes later a knock was heard on the door. When Izayoi answered it she smiled at her mate. “Ladies it appears our escorts are here!” She smiled at them and looped her arm through Inutaishios’ after she had retrieved her shawl. Kagome walked out and Sesshoumaru had to hold back a growl of pleasure, the gown hugged her curves in all the right places. He had to restrain himself from kissing her when she smiled shyly up at him and delicately looped her arm through his. Ikaru followed closely behind Kagome but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the third male standing in the hall way. “Papa what is the meaning of this.” Ikaru said her tone dangerous. Inutaishio had the good sense to look guilty, and poor Heero gulped nervously. They had dressed him in a formal midnight blue silk kimono. Looking at the other two males it was obvious they had chosen the colors to match their female companions as Prince Sesshoumaru was in a forest green kimono of the same style, and Lord Inutaishio was in a golden one. “Ikaru dear, you know it is improper for a female to attend these functions without an escort.” Inutaishio gulped at Ikaru’s glare. “It has never been a problem before.” Ikaru said her done deceptively calm. “Sister please, I don’t know how it is to demons, but having an escort is useful to keep unwanted males away.” Kagome said giving Ikaru a pleading look. Ikaru gave Kagome a hard look before sighing. “Tell me why you choose Heero then.” Ikaru said looking at the male in question. “Well dear you see you have been spending quite a bit of time around him lately, so you brother and I thought he would be an appropriate escort for you this evening due to his familiarity.” Inutaishio said, Sesshoumaru gave him a glare for involving him, but at the moment his daughters temper was far more frightening than his son’s. He relaxed a little when Ikaru sighed again and patted Kagomes’ hand gently before hesitantly taking Heero’s offered arm and starting down the hall. Heero was so nervous he hadn’t gotten a good look at the princess other than to notice the similar colors they were wearing. When she slowly looped her arm though his, he thought he was dreaming. He finally got up the courage to really look at her and he had a hard time controlling his reaction. Like all the females, the gown hugged her curves in all the right places, and the colors complimented her. The gown made her look like a goddess of the night flowing like water around her body, her golden eyes framed in a smoky shadow made her eyes look even more ethereal, the dark sapphires she wore glittered in the torchlight, and her moon kissed hair flowed in waves down her back, yes goddess was a more than adequate description. When he looked at the Lady of the West and Princess Kagome he noticed the effect was similar on them. The princess could be mistaken for a forest goddess, and the Lady of the West could be mistaken for a sun goddess. He felt even more inadequate standing beside the princess than he had before. He winced when Ikaru dug her claws ever so gently into his forearm. “Heero, if I must put up with this tonight, I will not have you looking like a kicked puppy. Stand tall, you are representing the West tonight, do not forget that.” Ikaru whispered harshly. “Yes milady, I apologize it is me and not someone of higher standing escorting you, but your father was most insistent.” Heero said quickly bowing his head in apology. “Hnn he usually is when he gets an idea such as this, I do apologize for him. Do not feel that your station affects my opinion of you. If I must have an escort at least I know you can behave accordingly. Papa tried this once before and the fool got an inflated head and started spouting nonsense about being my intended, and how honored I must have been to be on his arm. Then he tried to show everyone how happy I was to be there with him.” Ikaru said, her tone turning dangerous. “What happened if I may ask?” Heero asked carefully, he made mental notes not to repeat the fools mistakes. “I had him taken away by the guards after I had subdued him with a groin kick and later ripped out his lying tongue and severed his male package before shoving it down his throat to choke on.” Ikaru said a little too sweetly. “I see…” Heero quietly gulped then wiped the nervousness off his face as they got close to the ball room. He adjusted his posture to look proud. He and Ikaru were third in line as the doors opened and the crowd inside quieted almost immediately. They walked slowly into the room. The women seemed to glide beside their respective partners, the wrapped silk flowing around their lithe bodies. They all held knowing smirks as the scent of arousal hit their noses, and subsequently took a measured step toward their respective men who in turn put a possessive hand on their hips. It was all for show. It let the unmated men in the crowd know that for the night, if nothing else, the women were spoken for. Ikaru was impressed with Heero’s control. She was truly expecting him to try something, but he was being a perfect gentleman so far, she would wait and see how the evening turned out though, her last experience had taught her initial impressions could be deceiving. After the claiming show the six of them spread out to mingle with the guests, Ikaru made certain to keep her sister within eyesight at all times. A short while after arriving Sesshoumaru was being forced from Kagome’s side by some men to discuss politics. Ikaru gave the gentlest tug on Heero’s arm causing him to quickly end his conversation and politely give their excuses; he knew where she wanted to go and quickly escorted her to Kagome’s side just as Sesshoumaru had been successfully pulled away. “This is as boring as I thought it was going to be.” Ikaru said hiding a yawn. Kagome nodded her head in agreement. “I almost wish Sesshoumaru would ask me to dance. At least then I would not be forced to listen to this boring political talk with a smile on my face.” Kagome said rubbing her sore cheeks. “Speaking of political talk, Heero was doing quite an admiral job of keeping the Egyptian’s quite entertained till I dragged him away.” Ikaru teased, and Heero blushed. “I just try to stay informed milady.” Heero said scratching the back of his head and blushing deeper as Ikaru and Kagome laughed at him. “Would miladies care for some refreshment?” He said trying to change the subject. Both women nodded as they brought their giggles under control, he made a quick exit toward the concessions table leaving the women to talk. “He seems to be doing his job well enough, and he is certainly cute enough.” Kagome teased nudging Ikaru in the ribs; she just looked at Kagome blankly for a moment before realization dawned on her. “He is one of my soldiers sister, this is a mission for him. There is nothing intimate between us.” Ikaru said woodenly. “Oh come on Ikaru, you cannot tell me you were not enjoying your time with him.” Kagome said seriously. “He is good at making conversation sister, and thus far he has behaved himself. I will not let my guard down however, experience has taught me to be wary.” Ikaru said just as seriously. “So just now when you were playfully teasing him?” Kagome said looking confused. “It was a test to see how he would handle the situation.” Ikaru said evenly, her eyes cold. “I do not believe you; I think despite yourself you are enjoying your time with him and let your guard slip just now.” Kagome said looking Ikaru straight in the eye. Ikaru didn’t flinch. Heero chose just that moment to reappear with the drinks. He smiled kindly and handed the women their drinks. They accepted with smiles and nods and stood in companionable silence while they slowly drained their glasses of the fruity punch. Before long Lord Dagley walked over toward the trio who had started a light conversation. “Pardon me, bu’ may I hae the honor of this dance milady?” He said extending his hand to Ikaru. She stared at his extended hand for a moment. Heero stepped forward. “My apologies but the Lady is with me this evening.” Heero said politely but firmly. “It is alright Heero, he means no harm. I will be happy to dance with you Lord Dagley.” Ikaru said laying a hand on Heero’s shoulder before bowing and taking Lord Dagley’s offered hand. He smiled kindly toward Ikaru and led her off to the dance floor. “Are you just going to let her go?” Kagome asked Heero, raising her eyebrow at him. “My duty is to keep unwanted males from pestering her. For the most part that merely requires my presence beside her milady. However, should she wish the company of another male, I have no right to stop her.” Heero said dutifully, though it did hurt a little when he saw her walk away. They watched as Ikaru glided across the dance floor led by Lord Dagley. In another corner Connor was watching the same dance with eyes clouded by jealousy. He knew one sure fire way to bring hurt to the one who continued to spurn him at every turn. He moved toward the stage getting ready to set his plan in motion. After the dance was over, Lord Dagley led Ikaru back over to Heero and Kagome. “Lass ye have the grace of a goddess to be sure. ‘Tis always a pleasure to share a dance with ye.” Dagley said smiling widely while bowing to her. “Thank you Lord Dagley, I must say I never regret sharing a dance with you my friend.” Ikaru said smiling, surprising both Kagome and Heero. Just then Connors’ voice boomed out over the crowd. Dagley cursed and Ikaru paled slightly after hearing what Connor suggested. “Milairds and ladies, ‘tis always a pleasure to hear the beautiful voice of the lovely Princess of the West. What say we bring her up to sing us a song or two?” He said clapping; he was quickly joined by the large crowd. Ikaru sighed, cursing under her breath. “Stay with my sister Dagley, do not let Connor near her.” Ikaru whispered as she left the group and made her way to the stage. “No worries lass, she’ll be safe with me.” Dagley said to her retreating back. “What are ye waitin’ for boy? Ye best be waitin’ when she leaves the stage, she’ll be needin’ a shoulder to lean on when she’s done.” He said clapping Heero on the shoulder and pointing him in the right direction. Heero didn’t have to be told twice and quickly made his way to the stage. Ikaru made it to the stage and instructed the band what she wanted played, almost immediately a haunting melody filled the ball room. When Ikaru opened her mouth the song that came out was one of the most heart-wrenching Kagome had ever heard. Tears sprang to her eyes, but she kept them from falling. As she looked around she noticed there was hardly a dry eye in the room. “Damn that Connor.” Dagley cursed beside Kagome. “It hurts her to sing…” Kagome whispered as she watched Ikaru continue to sing the beautiful but terribly sad melody. “Aye wee one, ‘tis a blessing an’ a curse for the lass. A gift from her mother she told meh once, brings a terrible pain to her chest e’ery time she sings.” Dagley said watching Ikaru with sad eyes. “How do you know her Lord Dagley?” Kagome said, trying to ignore the painful song and not really succeeding. “I once asked the lass to be mine many seasons ago, an’ she turned meh down. She offered meh her friendship an’ nothin’ more, I was glad to accept it once meh pride healed a bit from her rejection. She lets meh hae one dance at these parties as a gift. ‘Tis a strange friendship, but I hae come to like the arrangement.” Dagley smiled. The song ended and the crowd was silent for a moment before asking for another song. Ikaru bowed and complied before she started another song, this time without the band, the song was in a language Kagome had never heard before, but she soon recognized the howls in the song as those similar to a wolf howling. This song was filled with even more pain that the last. “If it hurts her this much why does she let them talk her into it?” Kagome said wiping away a tear that had escaped and had started slipping down her cheek. “Me best guess is that the lass does it to make the crowd happy so they will be more willing to negotiate favorably with the West. ‘Tis a tactic that works most of the time too.” Dagley said a note of sadness in his voice. “Do they know how much it hurts her?” Kagome said a bit of anger in her voice. “Aye lass they ken, but they dinna care. They try to make up for it by negotiatin’ more favorably with the West, but they dinna truly care for her feelins because they ask the lass to sing e’ery time they throw one of these parties.” Dagley said with a growl. Ikarus’ song finally ended and she slowly left the stage. Heero met her at the bottom of the stairs and led her out of the ball room to the garden just outside. “Your comrade has been absent since he got Ikaru to sing.” Kagome observed. “Aye probably off lickin’ his wounds. This lil stunt of his is probably partially my fault. The lads dinna understand my relationship with the lass, an’ Connor has been after the lass for several seasons now. Meh dancin’ with her probably set him off. I told him to let her go, but he must be thinkin’ now I was just tryin’ to get him outta the way so I could hae her.” Dagley said with a bit of concern filtering into his voice. “Dinna worry wee one, I’ll hae a talk with Connor and straighten this mess out.” “Be careful Lord Dagley, a man spurned can be a dangerous foe. He may not be willing to listen to you.” Kagome said seriously. “Then I’ll be makin’ him listen lass.” Dagley said with an ominous chuckle. The crowd had started talking again and the band was playing again, filling the ball room with noise again. “Fancy a dance wee one?” Dagley ask in a charming voice. “I would love to Lord Dagley.” Kagome smiled kindly, and Dagley swept her out onto the dance floor showing her how to dance to the music, and Kagome suddenly understood why Ikaru always gave him one dance. Dagley was fun to spend time with, not to mention an excellent dancer. It was certainly the highlight so far of Kagome’s evening. Dagley was the perfect gentleman, his hands never strayed, and he knew just when to crack a joke, Kagome thought the evening had just taken a turn for the better. Out in the garden Heero had just led Ikaru to one of the many stone benches along the pathway and let her sit down. There were no lanterns in this section of the garden so it had many concealing shadows. He had grabbed a glass of punch on his way to the stage to give to her. He handed her the fruity punch and watched as she slowly sipped on it, staying strangely silent. “Milady, are you alright?” Heero asked already knowing the answer. “Yes Heero, I will be fine.” Ikaru lied. Heero took a seat beside her and laid his hand on hers, feeling the chill clinging to it and the slight tremors shaking it, and willed some of his warmth and strength into her. They sat like that for what seemed like a long while, but finally her hand stopped shaking and her aura seemed more relaxed. When Heero looked over to her he saw her looking up at the ever shrinking moon, her eyes had a faraway look to them. “My okaa-san was a wonderful singer. Wolves are known for their singing, but okaa-san was known to be better than most. She taught me how to sing when I was still a small pup, it always made her smile when I sang, oto-san was also always smiling when I sang for them. Whenever I sing I see their smiling faces and it rips out my heart.” Ikaru said finally, clenching her hands into fists and fighting back her tears. “I am sorry milady.” Heero said simply. Her hand had fisted under his, he forced it to loosen and gripped it with his slightly larger hand. He again willed her some of his strength, simply keeping her company while she fought her internal battle. Eventually her body relaxed again and the salty scent of tears left the air. “We had better get back, Papa will wonder where we have gone.” Ikaru finally said sounding more like her normal self and began to stand. Heero stood with her but did not let go of her hand. Instead he pulled her back around to face him. “Milady, it is none of my business. I know full well that I am your escort for only tonight, and after this night our roles will be the same as they were before, but I will regret it if I do not tell you this. You honor the memories of your parents every time you sing; I believe that the smiling faces you see are them trying to encourage you from the afterlife. I also believe they are trying to help you move on.” He said finally letting go of her hand taking a step back and smiling at her. She looked at him blankly for a few moments, before blinking and stepping away and turning her back to him. “Maybe you are right Heero, but it does not help the pain in my chest when I see their faces.” Ikaru said straightening her back. “Come let us return to the party.” Heero nodded and offered her his arm leading her back to the party. When they returned Kagome and Lord Dagley were talking animatedly, Sesshoumaru was nowhere to be seen. Ikaru pasted on a smile that didn’t fool Kagome for a second but she returned the smile. “Heero do me a favor and go find my brother and tell him I need him. It is not right that he is not with his new mate at her first party with us. Plus he is allowing an unmated male to sniff around what is his.” Ikaru smirked at Dagley. “Lass ye wound meh, I learned meh lesson about mated lasses the last time.” He winked at her, and they all laughed. “Very well milady, I shall return shortly.” Heero bowed before leaving. “How ar’ ye doin’ lass?” Dagley asked suddenly serious. “I am fine as always Lord Dagley.” Ikaru said evenly. “Horse shit, I’ll no’ be allowin’ ye to lie to me lass.” Dagley growled, and Ikaru sighed. “Very well, I will be fine. It is nothing time won’t numb.” She said looking away, she felt Kagome take her hand and Dagley patted her shoulder as he walked past her. “Tha’s better lass. Now I’ll be off. ‘Twas nice to meet ye wee one, mayhaps we will hae the pleasure of talkin’ again. For now I must be off to beat a certain bastard’s arse.” Dagley smiled as he cracked his knuckles. The women laughed as Dagley disappeared into the crowd. “He is a good friend.” Kagome said. “He is, it seems you discovered his talent of making the evening fly by.” Ikaru smirked, and Kagome smiled back. “Yes he is quite entertaining. Not to mention a wonderful dancer, I see why you always let him have one dance with you.” Kagome teased playfully. “One of his many talents yes, did he treat you well?” Ikaru said raising her eyebrow. “Yes he was a perfect gentleman; I would not have kept company with him otherwise.” Kagome smiled at Ikaru. Just then Sesshoumaru showed up with Heero in tow. “Thank you sister, they simply would not let me leave them no matter the excuse I tried to give.” Sesshoumaru said taking up a position beside Kagome, taking her hand and lifting it to his lips to place a gentile kiss to the back of it. “Forgive me mate.” “There is nothing to forgive Sesshoumaru, Lord Dagley, Heero and Ikaru have been keeping me company while you have been away. Lord Dagley even showed me a new dance.” Kagome smiled at him as she snuggled into his side, and laughed at his possessive growl. “Well if you are that jealous, how about you ask me for a dance!” He growled again and swept her out onto the dance floor. She laughed happily the whole way. “Well looks like she did not need me after all.” Ikaru smiled. “Milady, would you care to dance as well?” Heero said offering her his hand. He had plucked up his courage and decided to ask her, the worst she could do to him was say ‘no.’ “I think a dance would be lovely Heero.” She smiled kindly to him and took his offered hand and let him lead her onto the dance floor. She considered it his reward for behaving thus far and for his kind words earlier. Heero turned out to be quite a good dancer and Ikaru let him have two more dances after the first. She couldn’t remember the last time she had had such an enjoyable time during one of these parties. Kagome had managed to keep Sesshoumaru from being taken away by the other dignitaries, and even gotten him to dance several times with her. Her smile was radiant and he even smirked a few times during the evening. Finally the evening came to an end and the men escorted their females back to their respective bedrooms. Heero walked slowly, not really wanting the evening to end. Eventually they reached Ikaru’s chamber doors. The hall was quiet and Heero reluctantly released Ikaru’s arm. “Thank you for a lovely evening Heero, you were an excellent escort.” Ikaru smiled as she stepped away from him toward her door. “It was an honor milady. I am pleased you had a pleasant evening. Sleep well.” Heero said as he bowed and walked away. Ikaru entered her chambers and went straight to her bedchamber. She walked over to her window and looked up at the fading stars. She didn’t want to think about unpleasant things at the moment, she didn’t lie when she said she had had an enjoyable evening after she had been forced to sing, Heero had done his job as an escort to perfection. Somewhere in the back of her mind she couldn’t help but think it was all too perfect and that come the morrow he will act like all the other men who came after her by spreading rumors and trying to claim her. She shook her head free of the thoughts. It would do no good to dwell on them, she would wait and see what would happen and deal with it then. She undressed and slipped into her sleeping gown downed her potion and let exhaustion take her. Like most nights, however, her dreams were anything but sweet. ############################ Well that’s it for this chapter, dear lord it is monstrous 0-0.
