InuYasha grabbed the ringing phone before it could wake Kagome and the pups and answered it with a growl. He looked at the amount of light coming in through the window and realized that it was later than he expected so he supposed he couldn’t bitch too much about being woken up and would have to be civil to his brother who had given him far more time with his family than he had dared to hope for and been far more reasonable about their situation than he had expected.
“Yo,” he said quietly, knowing Sesshomaru would be able to hear him.
“I can delay no longer,” he said. “Your absence is now causing more speculation than I can deflect. Understand this brings me no pleasure.”
InuYasha sighed. “Keh, I know that. To be honest I didn’t expect this long not to mention the fact that you supported me, doing what you could to help me find her instead of kicking my ass. I’ll talk to Kagome and see how she wants to handle it.”
“Mmm, handle what?” Kagome murmured as she snuggled into his side.
He nuzzled her hair, taking in the scent of her. “Sesshomaru says our time is up on my side of things.”
“Call me back after you have spoken,” Sesshomaru told him.
InuYasha set his phone back on the bedside table and then rolled onto his side so that he could look at her. He tucked her hair behind her ear and she smiled warming his heart and making him feel like everything was going to be okay because it had to be. He would make it be for her and Kazuki and Emiko.
“Me too,” she said. "Whatever it takes, we’ll make that world for them and for us."
He snorted. “I know I didn’t think that in your direction.”
‘But it is what you were thinking,” she said. “I don’t need to hear your thoughts to know what’s going on in your head and we knew it couldn’t last forever. So what do we do?”
“Hell if I know,” he replied. “You’re the one with the most to lose and have more experience with this kind of thing than I do. Honestly most of the youkai aren’t going have a problem because of who you are. It’s only the being a hanyou and bringing more hanyou into the world that some of them won’t like.”
“Hmm, is that because I’m not just a woman you are with but your mate?” she asked.
“Yeah,” he said. “You can refrain from breeding but there is no resisting the desire to be with your mate.”
“I don’t know about that,” she pouted with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “You’ve been doing a lot of resisting when all I want is for my mate to take me like his bitch.”
InuYasha growled. “That is not fair, woman, not fair at all.”
“I know,” she agreed. “It’s totally unfair the way he makes me want him so much, and then won’t just let himself give us what we both want.” You won’t hurt me.
“Damn it,” he said as he pulled her body flush against his. You fight dirty. “Plus we’re supposed to making a plan here for presenting our pups to everyone.”
She smiled a little as she nibbled his throat. “How about we make a deal? I’ll be good long enough for us to figure out what we want to do and you promise to stop being so careful.” She placed a sucking kiss against his skin. “What do you say my handsome hanyou?”
“Fine, woman, you win,” he told her.
“Just like we both knew I would. It was only a matter of time,” she said seriously and he chuckled. “Okay, I have actually been thinking about the best way to handle our announcement and this is probably going to sound crazy but I think we should do it together at the same time.”
He blinked at her. “You want to bring your people and the youkai here at the same time? You were right that does sound crazy.”
She slapped his arm. “Gee thanks. You weren’t supposed to agree with me, jerk. You were supposed to profess your faith in me or ask me why.”
He laughed but quickly stopped and cleared his throat as she scowled at him. “How about this? I trust you my beautiful mate, love of my life, mother of my pups and if you say that the best way to arrange things to have the youkai and your people here at the same time then I’ll support you, but you are going to be the one who calls and breaks the news to my brother.”
She made a little growling sound as he chuckled. “You started off so good and then had to go and ruin it with that last part.”
“I’m sorry,” he said brushing his lips across hers. “I do trust you. I won’t tease you anymore. Tell me why.”
Appeased by the sincerity in his tone she kissed him back and then answered, “Mostly because they are going to have to get used to tolerating each other’s presence in the world. If the Great Miko and the hanyou brother of the Youkai no Taishou can fall in love then there is no reason they can’t spend an hour together and act civilly. Also if we did it separately then whichever group went second would use it to find a way to be offended.”
“I take it back,” he said. “Knowing your reasons now, it makes sense.”
“That’s because I’m the smart one in this relationship,” she told him with a grin.
“Keh, keep telling yourself that, woman,” he said as he reached for his phone. “Just let me call Sesshomaru back and while I do that you can call the monk and then we can let those two decided the date and time seeing as how I’ve got a promise to keep.”
Kagome’s body heated at his words and she quickly moved to grab her phone. She could hear InuYasha explaining to his brother what they wanted to do, confident as he explained their reasons. That he respected her so much and had such faith in her warmed her heart in a way she had never known was possible and she vowed never to take it or him for granted.
Her brow furrowed at the length of time it was taking Miroku to answer that was until the call connected and she heard a woman in the background asking who it was.
“Kagome,” Miroku said both to her and as an answer.
“Miroku, that’s Sango I heard, isn’t it?” she asked.
“I well, that is to say we,” her oldest friend tried.
She laughed lightly. “It’s okay. I’m happy for you, for both of you. I’m glad that you’ve been able to find your way back to one another and that it won’t be because of me that my two best friends lost something special.”
“I’ll admit to being glad as well,” he told her. “Now, I assume there was a reason for your call.”
“Yes,” she replied. “I need you to get in touch with Sesshomaru and find a day and a time that will work for us to present Emiko and Kazuki to the youkai clan leaders and the council. To avoid offending anyone and because they are going to have to learn to tolerate each other anyway I’ve decided to gather everyone together at the shrine.”
“I can understand your reasoning of course, but are you certain this is wise?” he questioned. “The wards are strong but that is a lot of youki and reiki to stand up against should things not go well.”
“The wards will hold,” she said her voice firm. “I’ll make sure that they do and anyone who tries to cause trouble with my babies so near will have to answer to me.”
Behind her InuYasha growled and she shivered as began to nibbled the back of her neck. It was all she could do not to moan as one of his hands found her breast and the other settled between her legs. A steady rumbled poured from him that she could feel against her back more than she could hear and then his voice filled her mind.
You are so fucking sexy when you get all fierce. Hang up the damn phone already.
“I’ve made my decision,” Kagome said. “I hope I can count on your support.”
“Of course,” Miroku replied. “I’ll see to the arrangements.”
She bit down hard on her lip as InuYasha pinched one of her nipples firmly. Oh Gods you really are going to keep your promise, aren’t you? “Thank you, Miroku. Just call me when you have all the details.”
He grabbed the phone and ended the call, tossing it onto the floor beside the bed. “You know me, mate. I always keep my promises.”
Kagome gasped but didn’t resist as he jerked her up onto her hands and knees. She reveled in the delicious warmth of him as he draped himself across her back, nipping at her shoulder as he rocked against her, the hard length of him sliding up between her cheeks. She leaned down onto her forearms, pushing back against him with a soft whimper, a plea.
“Are you ready?” he asked, his hands molding her backside.
“Yes,” she breathed. “Please, InuYasha.”
He growled and then suddenly she was crying out, contracting around him as he filled her completely with single hard thrust of his hips. “Shit, already?”
“Don’t be an ass,” she said rocking back against him. The low groan that escaped him sent a shiver down her spine. “Now hurry up and keep your promise already.”
“Demanding bitch,” he said, as he withdrew and slammed back into her only to do it again. “Is this what you want?”
She couldn’t make the words come out as he took her hard and fast, clawed hands on her hips, holding her firmly. She had missed him so much and it felt so good. Yes, mmm, more. Harder. Gods, yes!
He growled and moved faster still. The youkai in him hovering as close to the surface as it possibly could. Now the he knew for certain he wasn’t going to cause her any pain he was more than willing to take her like she wanted. Of course he loved making love to her but sometimes what they both really wanted was a good hard fuck and it had been so long since he’d just been able to let go. First because of all the months without her and then because she’d needed time to heal. He growled as she came again, hooking his arm around her middle to hold her against him as he spilled himself inside her.
“Mmm, that was mmm,” she tried.
He chuckled as he kissed the back of her shoulder before rolling off of her. “You have a way with words, woman. Damn, I’m glad you got that promise out of me.”
She turned onto her side and looked at him as he lay there on his back, one arm thrown over his eyes. His breathing was uneven and there was a decided flush to his skin but there was also a very clear smile on his lips.
“I really do love you, so much” she said.
He lifted his arm and his head and looked at her before reaching out and pulling her over to lay against his chest. He kissed her forehead and ran his fingers through her hair. “I love you too and nothing and no one is going to keep us from making this world right for our pups.”
“Speaking of pups,” she said with a giggle as she sat up. She cupped her breasts which had instantly grown heavy at the sound of her babies starting to fuss. “It’s definitely breakfast time. Would you mind?”
“Do I ever?” he replied as he slipped out of bed. He retrieved their children and help her arrange the pillows that she could support them both while they nursed. “You all set now? If so I can go whip us up something so that it will be ready for you when they’re done.”
She nodded. “That would be wonderful. Thank you.”
He leaned over and kissed her softly before grabbed a pair of pants and heading out of the room. She looked down at her son who met her eyes and made a happy sound against her breast before smacking loudly and resuming his meal.
She laughed lightly. “You are definitely your father’s son.”
She rocked a little, humming softly and still so amazed and grateful for the many blessing in her life. Emiko released her and Kagome shifted, Kazuki more than able to keep eating with the pillow for support as she held his sister up to her shoulder and patted her back. Her little girl wiggled and then burped very loudly.
“Well, excuse you miss. Seems you are your father’s daughter too,” she said with amusement.
InuYasha entered their room then with a tray balanced on one hand and an eyebrow arched. “Damn right, she’s mine.” He set the tray down and then took Emiko from Kagome and held her against him. “She’s going to be a Daddy’s girl who won’t ever be interested in boys unless her Daddy says they are good enough first.”
Kagome laughed. “Keep telling yourself that. Because we both know that the boy you are going to think is good enough for her doesn’t exist.”
He grinned at her. “Exactly.”
She rolled her eyes and lifted Kazuki to her shoulder, rubbing his back in small circles. “Poor Emi-chan. You are going to be just as bad as your father is aren’t you, nii-chan. Good thing she’ll have me to be the voice of reason. Bring her back and they can have some tummy time on the bed while we eat.”
”Tummy time?” InuYasha asked as he picked up the tray and set it across her lap before laying Emiko on the bed beside her brother.
“Yes,” she replied. “It’s good for them. It will help develop their neck and shoulder muscles and get them ready to crawl eventually.”
“Keh, good thing you know all this shit,” he told her. “Though you might not want Kazuki crawling any sooner. From what I hear the furniture suffered quite a bit once I went mobile, or so Hisako likes to tell me. She especially likes to give me a hard time about my mother’s mahogany dressing table. Apparently it was some sort of priceless antique or some shit.”
Kagome giggled. “Please tell me you are really saying that you crawled around gnawing on table legs like a puppy. That would have been too adorable for words!”
He snorted. She was completely crazy, of course, to be so happy to find out that her child was probably going to act a lot like a puppy in the not too distant future, but wasn’t that one of the reasons he loved her so much. “You don’t have to sound so delighted about it, woman, but yes.”
Kagome clasped her hands together. “Oh, I do hope she can come by and see the babies soon. I’ll bet she has some amazing stories and we really should try to be prepared after all.”
“Yeah sure, you want to be prepared,” he said though not without amusement. “But I’ll call her. I know she’ll want to see them and once we are out she won’t have to sneak away.”
Once they were finished eating InuYasha went to call Hisako and to check in with his brother to see how the details were coming along. While he did that Kagome used the quiet time to think. She needed to have some idea of exactly how they would proceed and of what she wanted to say. No doubt nothing she said was going to convince everyone but the more people she could get on her side from the start the better it would be for everyone.
She didn’t harbor any illusions that this was going to be a battle easily won. Even if Shiori hadn’t made that clear when speaking of her visions, she’d met the evil behind this war, looked into his eyes and seen the darkness in his soul. He’d proved himself patient and clever and after five hundred years there really was only one way this could end; bloody, hard fought and with great loss on all sides.
Her eyes fell on her beautiful babies. Some how Kazuki had managed to roll himself over closer to his sister so that they were able to reach other again and Emiko was now sucking on her brother’s hand as she headed towards sleep. She quickly wiped away an errant tear. Whatever happened to her and InuYasha at least they would have each other.
“Oi, you okay?” InuYasha asked from the doorway with a frown.
She nodded. “I was just thinking that it’s good, you know, that they have each other, just in case…”
He went to her and wrapped his arms around her. “There is no just in case. We are going to beat this bastard and then live happily ever after damn it.”
She laughed a little. “If you say so.”
He lifted her head with a finger under her chin and looked into her eyes. “I do say so. Neither one of is going anywhere, not for a long time. Whatever happens, if I have to claw my way out of hell, I am not leaving our pups without a father and I expect the same from you. You got that, woman?”
“Yes, I’m sorry,” she replied. “You’re right. Let’s just blame it on pregnancy hormones, okay?”
“You know you can’t milk that forever, but since you said I was right, I’ll let it go this time,” he told her with a smirk.
She rolled her eyes but laid her head against his chest. “Happily ever after, you promise?”
He rested his cheek against the top of her head as he ran his fingers through her hair. “I promise, and you know I always keep my promises.”
