Mira
sighed as she finished sweeping the shrine steps. She leaned heavily on the
broom, and decided that she was getting too old after all. She felt her bones
shifting in pain as she moved, and felt the constant reminder in her heart that
Kami would come for her soon. In fact, she hadn’t been feeling all too well
today at all. Her chest was hurting, and her heart felt heavy.
“Mira-sama!” A singsong voice from the doorway made her painfully turn. She saw
the girl waiting for her there. Mira smiled. Her bad teeth showed through her
thin lips. Her brown eyes twinkled in joy. Kagome was the only happiness in her
life, her only salvation from the loneliness she felt since her husband died.
The girl had come to her four years ago. She had found her half dead on her
doorstep in the middle of the night. Frozen until she was blue, and so wounded,
Mira wondered how she still lived. The girl still bore some scars of what had
happened, but nothing to destroy her beauty. And a beauty she was indeed.
Kagome had flowing black hair, darker than a raven’s wing. Her eyes were
unusual…they were blue…blue eyes and black hair never went together. The child
was truly strange. And being a miko, Mira had sensed at once that Kagome was
part of her kind. She had a strong, pure, aura that was hard to ignore. She
attracted people to her naturally with her kindness and her good heart.
The poor girl hadn’t remembered a thing when she
awakened, only two names…Kagome, and Sesshoumaru. Lord Sesshoumaru was the
ruler of these lands, Mira had explained to the young girl. She must have been
living here before if she remembered the name so well.
“Mira-sama! Everything is ready! Please come in and eat!” She almost felt too
lucky. Kagome was a very responsible girl. She did almost everything around the
shrine. Even when she could barely stand, she, out of her guilt for burdening
the old woman, had offered to cook. Ever since then, Kagome had become
everything that Mira could not continue to bhe hhe helped with the villagers, kept
up the shrine, and took care of her too. To tell the truth, Kagome was like a
daughter to her. She rested the old broom against a column on the way in.
Something smelled really good.
“Kagome…what is that?”
“It’s dumplings…made from that deer I caught yesterday!” The girl smiled as she
set out the food on the table. Soon, they were comfortable on the pillows and
eating. The dumplings were good. When they were finished, Kagome got to washing
the dishes. She was humming a small tune as went about her work. Mira sat back
and enjoyed a hot cup of tea.
&;&nb;
“This is nice, isn’t Mira-sama?” The grandma looked up.
“What?”
“This lifestyle. I love it here.” Mira’s eyes were sad. Somewhere out there,
the girl had family. She wondered what happened to her really. When she opened
the door, she ht set sensed a youkai, and even if it was a youkai that attacked
her, youkai didn’t leave bodies on doorsteps.
“Yes, Kagome.” She suddenly wasn’t feeling well at all, and she knew, somehow
she knew, that this was serious. Her chest was hurting real bad around her neck
and her heart was pounding. She began to breathe deeply to try to calm herself,
but it wasn’t working. She stood, thinking to go to her room, but the cup she
was holding shattered as it fell from her limp fingers. Kagome, alerted at the
sound, turned quickly dropping the towel she held and ran over to the old
woman. She supported her.
“Mira-sama! What’s wrong?! Mira-sama!” The miko didn’t answer. She fell
forward, crashing to the floor and bringing Kagome with her. The girl turned
her over so that she could breathe. “Mira-sama!”
“K-Kagome…” Her shaking hand reached into her robes. She pulled out a clear
ball. “This is yours…” Kagome took it, not paying attention to what it was.
Mira was like a grandmother to her! She couldn’t die! “Kagome…Kami has come for
me, Kagome…you must run this shrine now…in my place…”
“No! Mira-sama! Please! Don’t leave me all by myself!” Mira smiled…It was
unfair…unfair that life had to keep kicking her like this. It was unfair!
“Mira-sama! Everything will be fine!” Again the old woman smiled. “Be strong…”
Then she was gone. Her last breath rattled out of her old body and she was
gone. The mysterious smile was still on her face. Kagome’s eyes refused to
believe. She refused to believe that the only human being she knew on this
world was gone. It was suddenly to much. The anguish was caving in her mind;
horror was mushrooming within her body; her pupils dilated.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!” The most horrid, unearthly scream came from her
mouth; then there was a bright pink light; and then there was nothing….
(………..)
Sesshoumaru was following Jakken out the main door. Rin was tagging along.
“Tell Gael that he is welcome here any time. I would like to discuss-”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!” Sesshoumaru didn’t flinch; didn’t move. The wail was
not of this world. Jakken was covering his ears in pain, and Rin’s eyes were
scared. And he saw the explosion. The small shrine that Jakken would have gone
to if Sesshoumaru hadn’t decided to delay him further blew up in the most
intense pink light the demon lord had ever seen. He smelled the pure energy of
a miko.

“ITE! My ears, Sesshoumaru-sama! My ears!” Rin was still unmoving. Her eyes
were focused on the shrine. He smelled blood.
“Jakken…” The toad stopped his wailing and listened. “Do not let Rin follow…she
will stay here…”
“But Sesshoumaru-sama! That is miko energy! Sesshoumaru-sama will be purified!”
The demon lord said nothing, showed nothing. Jakken was sweating.
“Are you questioning my orders, Jakken?” He suppressed a smile as the toad
burst into opologies.
“No! Never!” But the lord was gone…flying on his cloud toward the shrine.

He found a disaster. The shrine was on fire, and he was afraid that the forest
around it would catch flame as well. Oddly enough, the forest branches seemed
to be immune to the flames. Miko fire…he knew its powers, and knew that it
burned youkai twice the amount normal fire would. He stretched out his senses.
Two bodies…one was alive, the other had no life left. That was strange. He only
knew of one miko that lived in his lands…Mira…he had known her since he was a
pup. She had helped his mother through her birth. Mira was a special miko. Her
blood was mixed with youkai blood. She was one of the rare cases to survive the
mix. She was not a hanyou, but not youkai or human. She didn’t belong in any of
the worlds. He remembered his mother telling him the story of how she came to
be the way she was. When she was very young, Mira was bitten by a youkai. No
one knows how she survived. He supposed that would always be a mystery.
He sighed. In any case, it looked like he would have to go get her. He couldn’t
have her dying. He needed her to see Yumi. His brow furrowed slightly,
imperceptibly to the untrained eye. Yumi had gotten worse. She was in bed with
a high fever. Remembering this, he decided that he had to hurry. Covering his
face with his sleeve, he used his youkai speed to blindly dash in and look for
the old lady. Above the roaring fire, he heard sobbing.
“Mira-sama! Wait for me! I won’t be alone!” The voice was familiar. He walked
toward it and stopped. There was that girl! Kagome! But wasn’t she dead? At the
same moment, she looked up at him. He felt a tug, as if something pulled him to
her. She was more beautiful than she was four years ago. Her face had matured
and aged, but for the better. She no longer looked like a child.
He looked beside her and saw Mira. The Tensaiga was
still. The woman’s soul was gone. He turned, disappointed. He was about to
leave, but something told him not to. He looked back at the girl…no
woman……Kagome…
It was the first time he did something without thinking. He walked to her. She
looked fearful and threw herself back on the woman. Her clothing was burning
and he could smell that she was injured badly.
“You will come and see Yumi.” She didn’t seem to hear him.
“Mira-sama. I will be joining you soon. Kami has come for me as well!” He was
completely confused. He felt the fire licking at his own flesh and decided that
it was enough.
“Come, human.” She lay still.
“I will go with Mira-sama.”
“You will come with me.” She turned half-crazed eyes to him. He could tell she
was completely out of her mind in this one moment. “You are letting emotions
take control, wench. Get up!”
“Kami-sama…” She stood. “Take me to Mira-sama…” Her tears made him feel
strange. It was as though someone was stabbing him in the gut.
“Yes…come…” But she stayed. Growling, he decided that he’d had it with her
game. In a flash, she was slung over his shoulder and they were sprinting
toward the castle. He jumped up to Yumi’s balcony and threw the girl to the
ground. Yumi’s eyes were closed. She was breathing with much difficulty. The
girl was looking at Yumi strangely.
“You will tend to her…” He was going to leave without saying anything.
“And if I don’t?” He recognized the defiance in her voice. Yes…this was the
same miko as all those years ago. He felt the anger stirring.
“Then I will throw you back into the fire I saved you from…you are in my
debt…don’t forget it…” Her eyes widened and she gasped.
“A life for a life…my debt is repaid…”
“S-Saved…” He said nothing, shutting the door behind him. For the longest time,
Kagome just stared at the beautiful woman in the bed.
“Be strong…” She decided that she would finish Mira’s last request. She
looked at the woman…
(………….)
The door was glowing pink. Sesshoumaru stayed outside, leaning against the
door. The girl was crazy, but she knhat hat she was doing. He wondered what he
would do with her once she was finished. The shrine was gone, burned to ashes.
He could return her to Inuyasha…but from what he heard, his brother had his own
bitch to take care of. And yet…didn’t he consider her dead? The door opened and
the girl came out. She was sweating and he could smell her fatigue. She
stumbled out, catching herself on the wall. He didn’t spare her a look.
“She is fine…” He smelled her blood. Without turning, he used his senses to
search out how bad she was hurt. He sensed a gash in her side, burns on her
arms and legs, and several bruises forming on her back and neck where boards
must have fallen. He felt that same unfamiliar sensation again.
Kagome wanted nothing more than to cry. She looked at the man before her with
contempt. He should not have brought her. What was the point? She hadn’t
realized that she had spoken aloud until he began to answer.
“You repaid me. Now go!” He was angry. Angry that she was questioning him;
angry that she was making him feel this way. He wanted her out…now. He barked
for the men to get her out of the castle.
Be strong…Kagome…you must run the shrine in my
place...
She didn’t know how it happened, but she was suddenly
being led outside the castle, forcefully shoved by several guards. They growled
at her when she didn’t move. She was almost at the door. The tears were coming
out. She could no longer hold them. Why? Why did she have to die? She went limp
in the arms of the guards. They were so surprised, they let her fall. One was
suddenly angry. He kicked her in the side.
“Get up, wench! The master said to leave!” The other one
was sudd kic kicking her too. She curled into a ball, crying, trying to ignore
the pain that seemed to be eating her inside and out. Her mind was swirling,
reliving another unimaginable pain that seemed just like this. Images flashed.
Be happy…Inuyasha…
No! Kikyo!
Kohaku! Naraku, you bastard!
Mother…father…
A well closing. Someone digging through the dirt.
Someone screaming. Someone cursing. Blood. Blood everywhere! Are you alright?
No…I’ll never be alright. Is it closed, Kagome? Yes…closed forever. Is he dead?
Who? Naraku…Yes. More blood. Glowing shards and a brilliant light. Then the
pain. But no…the pain was real.
Then she was up. Someone was screaming.
“What’s going on here?!” She didn’t recognize the voice.
She heard ragged breathing. She felt hands on her body, shoving her outside.
She hit the pavement, scraping her hands and knees. Her clothing tore further.
“She killed my friend!”
“My mother!”
“The filthy little bitch purified her!” It dimly
registered. The explosion. Youkai. She had killed youkai and now they were mad.
“M-Mira…sama…” She barely recognized her weak voice. She
was dragged upwards. In fron her her, she saw the face of an inu demon. He had
fierce yellow eyes. He was barring his teeth and looked ready to kill. Fear
overrode all her senses.
“Stop this madness! Now!” His eyes never left her. His
clawed hand drew back and slapped her across the face. She felt the nails
digging into her cheek. The blow nearly knocked her out.
“Not until she’s dead!”
“Kagome-neechan! Kagome-neechan! What are you doing to
Kagome-neechan?!” A child’s screech stopped the inu’s hand before he could hit
her again. She used that as leverage. She summoned all her power, at least,
anything she had left. After healing that woman, she didn’t even have enough
power to make herself glow. Nevertheless, she knew she had to get away from
here. She would be killed if she didn’t. But would that be so bad?
Be strong…you must run the shrine in my place…She
screamed, letting out all the power she had left. The hands were knocked back.
The youkai in front of her was sent flying, and she watched in fear as more
came. She didn’t remember running. She just knew thae hae had to get away from
the glowing yellow eyes. She heard their howls and laughter.
“Let’s get the bitch, boys!”
“Come here, lassy, we won’t hurt you too bad!” Something
was on top of her and she had no more strength to fight. She gave in.
“I’m sorry…I’m sorry…” Her clothes were being torn off.
Hands were everywhere, hitting her, causing her pain. “I’m sorry, Mira-sama…”
She turned and saw Sesshoumaru looking shocked. Funny…Sesshoumaru shocked…then
blissful darkness.
(………………)
Sesshoumaru heard the commotion seconds before Yumi burst into the room. She
was breathing harshly, but otherwise looked fine.
“How dare, Sesshoumaru-sama?! How dare you let them do this to her? After she
samy lmy life?!” He felt the guilt, and the anger was back. Let them kill her.
He hated feeling this way. Yet another part of him kept screaming that she
didn’t deserve any of this. She had saved Rin!
“I paid her what I owed her…”
“Damn you!” Then she was off. He slumped in his chair; for once, emotion had
free reign over his face.
“My debt is repaid. It is not my business what happens to her now.” Then he
heard it.
mal>
“Kagome-neechan! Kagome-neechan! What are you doing to Kagome-neechan?!” It was
Rin! He rushed down the steps to find that the girl was running away. Several
men were on the ground, unconscious, obvioiusly from her powers. He saw the men
gather and run after her, heard their howls and laughter, and knew what awaited
her. He stood for the longest time, still undecided.
“Kagome-neechan saved Yumi-chan! Why are they hitting her?” She was sobbing,
crying. The guilt was too much. He took off after the men.
(………………….)
The sight was sickening. The men were pawing her, tearing up her clothing. He
could smell her thick fear but most importantly, her blood. There was a lot of
it. The smell made something in him snap. He felt a rage come over him like
never before, and he knew, somehow he knew that he would never be the same. He
saw her pain filled look right before she passed out and he knew that he would
never be the same.
“Stop…” He fiercely tried to take control but failed. In mere seconds, the men
were on the floor…dead…He loomed over her, his eyes a bloody red. His fangs
were elongated and his claws dripped poison. He fell to the ground, trying in
vain to take control of his emotions. It wasn’t working. This…this woman…she
was responsible for this. He should have let her die. Damn his honor! Damn Rin!
Damn everything. He was tearing through the forest. Trees fell victim to his
claws and pretty soon, there was a small clearing around them. He wa ove over
to Kagome, ready to rip her into shreds. Her blood was exiting him. A low growl
escaped him.
“Sesshoumaru!” A frail, quivering voice made him turn his rage-contorted face
to the owner. It was Yumi. She stood before him, a white angel against the
savage beast. “Sesshoumaru! Stop this this instant!” She std tod towards him
and he growled. “Control yourself! The fight is over!” She walked towards him,
no fear apparent. In all her years with him, she knew how to handle him better
than anyone. She walked right past him and hurried to the miko. She was a
bloody mess. Her hair was tangled, the ribbon burned and bloody. Her miko’s
garments were torn and burned as well, her side caked in blood. Her cheek
sported a bloody stripe. Her feet were bare, one ankle swollen. Her small hands
were bloodied, and her slender arms were bruised as were her legs. Yumi made a
thorough inspection.
“She’ll be lucky if she lives through this…Sesshoumaru, you should be ashamed
of yourself.” He knew it. Slowly, his rage was dissipating. He looked over at
Kagome and instantly the guilt washed over him. How could he have done it? How
could he have considered letting her die? Looking at her now, lying there, bloody
and torn, he was reminded of the guilt he felt that time so long ago…he turned.
&;&nb;
“Sesshoumaru, I will ask you again…how could you? You knew well the village
despises miko! Why did you let her leave unguarded?” She wanted him to admit
his mistake. She wanted it! And he knew that in front of her, he could.
“I did not expect the guards to disobey me…”
“They did no such thing!”
“You barked at them to kick her out and they did!” Her face was angry. Her
feathers were ruffled.
“That is enough!” He was surprised at the intensity of his remorse. She was
just a pathetic, weak, ningen. But she was like Rin. Yes…he remembered now how
he had thought that she resembled Rin in her happiness. He walked to her and
picked her up.
“She will stay with me until she is healed.” The firmness in her voice almost
startled him.
“She will stay as long as she is not in my way.” Yumi nodded. He always had to
have it his way. “Go put Rin to sleep and don’t let her see Kagome like this.”
Yumi nodded and was gone. For a while, Sesshoumaru just stood there with Kagome
held securely in his arms. He looked at her face at her wounds. This was what
he had wanted to do then. This was what he had truly wanted to do ever since he
had seen her injured. He knew it, deep inside, but he had shoved it aside as
improbable and inappropriate. He felt again, that stabbing in the gut. He could
not identify the feeling. His muscles flexed and he was in the air, jumping to his
balcony and walking into his room. He put her on the bed and left tnd Ynd Yumi.
He decided something…
“You will stay with me…I will make you be in my debt…”

Hello readers! I just have to explain something before you read further.
This chappie is kinda dark and a little fast. I had to get it out of my system
so that I could continue to the really good stuff. In the next chappie, much
will be explained. Let me just tell you now, that Sesshoumaru’s kingdom is entirely
made up of Inu Youkai. The village around the castle walls is very primitive
and hateful towards the miko that live close by. The only reason they have not
attacked them, is because as long as Mira lived, she kept up the shield around
the shrine. Now that she is gone, the shield is no longer there.
