Fragments of Broken Pride
Chapter 3
After about an hour of waiting, and with a storm rolling in, the hanyou grew worried about his female companions. He strode off intending to retrieve them, whining and muttering about their tardiness and shouting back to his two friends to look after his brother. The kitsune and the monk waved to him as his form retreated into the distance, but he did not appear to notice.
Sesshoumaru snorted as his brother bid the pint-sized youkai pup, and the perverted human to look after him. He was no longer lying down, but rather sitting up, leaning against the same tree that had cradled Inuyasha and Kagome the night prior. There was an awful silence that loomed between the three bodies, but the demon lord, seemed to be enjoying it. Miroku and Shippo had begun playing a game that was put together with drawings in the dirt, along with rocks and sticks that were picked up and moved frequently. The youkai lord turned his nose up to the ridiculous imbeciles, crossing his arms before him in an annoyed fashion.
Suddenly the demon lord’s mood grew grave and he rose to his feet, unsheathing his sword. Miroku and Shippo stood up almost instantaneously both looking scared out of their minds. Miroku seized his staff and faced the youkai with forced bravery, while the kitsune retreated to safer ground.
Sesshoumaru sneered at the human and gestured with his eyes in the direction of the oncoming storm clouds. The monk looked, curious about what could be coming. He didn’t see anything, but after a moment he began to feel the demon poisons that always reeked around Naraku and his spawns.
“He’s sent the wind mistress. He intends to finish the job, while I’m still weakened.” he mumbled as he stepped forward and set his sword tip into the ground before him while he rested his hands atop the hilt.
Miroku was a bit astounded that the demon lord intended to face Naraku again in his current condition, “You can’t fight as you are now. You’ll be killed.” he said as he stepped up to face the approaching wind demoness.
A flash of light blazed in front of the monk, causing him to jump back and stumble to one knee. Sesshoumaru had shot a wave of Toukajin’s colossal power not three inches in front of his nose. He looked at the youkai lord with questioning anger.
“This fight does not concern you, human. It is between myself and my adversary. If you interfere, I will take you as an enemy.” droned the cool demon lord’s unfaltering voice. He would reclaim what Naraku had damaged of his. His pride.
The wind mistress landed before them with effortless elegance, holding her fan in front of her lips, as a band of demons swarmed above them “Good evening, Sesshoumaru-sama. I’m dreadfully sorry for the short notice of my arrival, but Naraku only just gave me the notice, myself. I assume you know what I came for.” she said folding her fan up.
The demon lord had a look that could ignite ice. “My life, but I’m afraid, you are in for a disappointment, because it’s not for sale.” he said as he skipped the chat and swiped his sword across the sky, causing nearly all of the youkai to fall to the earth in pieces. The survivors fled in all directions. Kagura made a heated scowl as she was showered with demon innards. She jumped up waving her fan of destruction hard in front of her, “Fujin no Mai!” she yelled as a cluster of tornados came barreling toward the Lord of the West, he leapt from their path, trying to ignore the biting pain that concentrated in the areas of his previous injuries. He turned sharply as another gust of twirling winds was thrown at him. He countered with a slash from Toukajin, but the wind mistress hit the attack with her own and dispersed it. Sesshoumaru growled at the refraction if his blade, as well as the pain swelling up over his body. He needed to end this battle before his body fell apart completely. He waited until the demoness attacked before he chose to jump over her attack, so he could get in close for an easier combat situation.
Miroku and Shippo watched from a distance, careful to keep far enough away to miss any stray attacks that may get tossed aside. Shippo jumped up onto the monk’s shoulder, “Miroku! He’s still hurt really bad, isn’t he!? You should help him!”
Miroku looked at the kit, “I?” he said sarcastically. “What happened to we?”
Shippo crossed his little arms, “Someone has to go get Inuyasha, and I have a better nose than you!” he said pretentiously.
Kagura tried to retreat from the demon lord’s close proximity, knowing he was more powerful at close range than she, but the demon lord would not relent his pursuit. Where ever she moved he followed, even through her flesh-cutting winds. She was growing angry, but she could see the more he moved the more sluggish his movements became, until finally his dodge fell below her attack. He let out a wretched scream as he plummeted into the clouds of dust that had stirred up from the winds “Got you…” she said triumphantly as the rain clouds began to release their cargo of moisture onto the world below. The demon lord stood up from the blood sprayed ground where he’d fallen as the rain chased the dust away. A new wound made itself present on his left hip, as it changed the tattered material into a dark pool. His chest and shoulder were exposed as his clothing no longer had the strength to hold together. The wounds Naraku had generously given him the day before were again torn open, and changing his fresh bandages to the color that seemed to be growing fond of him of late.
The rain washed rivulets of crimson down his legs and torso. Sesshoumaru fought to keep his balance as he saw the wind mistress close the distance between them, stepping over his lonely sword as she seemed to determine him no longer intimidating. She laughed derisively as she stood before him, feeling quite proud of her work.
The youkai lord growled as he finally lifted his darkening gaze to the demoness’s face. “Am I already defeated to you, wind mistress?” He asked through clenched fangs.
Kagura lifted her hand to place it gently on his bloodied cheek, “You don’t appear to have any strength left, Sesshoumaru-sama. You aren’t even putting up a fight anymore. You’re just trying to delay what you already know is coming.”
Sesshoumaru could taste the metallic flavor that forced it’s way up into his mouth, and escaped as it trickled down his chin and neck. The rain began to fall increasingly harder as the demon lord found every tiny drop that pelted down on him seem as if it weighed fifty pounds. His breath had began to fluctuate harder and softer, and it felt as if his lungs were being encased in a box, not large enough for them to fully expand. And all the while, the most painful thing was looking at the demoness before him, laughing insultingly at him and being able to do nothing.
Kagura smiled as she leaned forward and licked the blood from his lips, while her hand drew back, preparing to be thrust into the painful wound in his chest.
Sesshoumaru could have vomited on the disgusting woman and her boldness. He summoned his last bit of strength and threw his poisonous talons into her ribcage, just as a jolting pain flew into his’. The wind mistress drew her face away from his with a look of shock and pain as the Lord of the West bleed more severely from his mouth. She stumbled away, pulling her hand out of the demon lord’s mutilated chest. He choked as she did so, then tumbled to his knees, panting in shallow increments. His eyes narrowed to slits as red began to gush from his nose, appearing to be too impatient to wait to exit his mouth.
Kagura moaned aloud as she clenched her bleeding chest and fell onto the muddied ground. She tried to rise again, but the poison gripped her and pulled her back down. She groaned as the toxin spread through her body, consuming everything it touched. She let out a horrible scream as she threw herself onto her back and her body convulsed sporadically for a time, before finally it stopped. The body moved no longer but the rain continued to hold no remorse and persisted with it’s assault of heavy raindrops.
Miroku and Shippo both ran onto the battle site, stopping when the reached the demon lord’s side. He did not appear to notice them as a bowed head and heavy eyelids narrowed his vision to only the puddle of muddy water that undulated before him.
Miroku knelt near him, honestly thinking he had either died or passed out while he was still sitting up. He touched the youkai’s wrist, checking for a pulse, but didn’t need the answer because the demon lord, instead, let out a soft growl at the contact. “You don’t look so well, Sesshoumaru-sama. How badly are you injured?”
The youkai lord did not respond. He had only heard the soft hum of falling rain accompanied by a low murmur. His senses were shutting down as the severe loss of blood was calling him into a dark sleep. He heard a voice scream something just as he let himself fall into the blackness, though he had wanted to know exactly what it was the voice had said.

“Sesshoumaru!” Inuyasha screamed as he ran onto the battle site with his heart in is throat. The two girls rode Kirara and followed a short ways behind him. Miroku scrambled to catch the youkai lord as he fell limp, looking rather startled from the demon’s sudden collapse.
Inuyasha frantically rushed to his brothers side, nearly shoving Miroku out of the way. “What happened!?” he screamed to Miroku as he held the limp body in his arms. “Why didn’t you protect him!”
Miroku looked ashamed but decided against offering excuses because of the hanyou‘s irrational condition. Kagome jumped off of the fire cat as she neared the ground, falling to one knee in a muddy puddle. Sango slid off of the neko’s back as she landed, but she noticed, before the others, the still body of Naraku’s spawn. She cautiously approached the wind mistress’s silent form then nearly fled in sickness when she had confirmed that the woman was indeed dead, having nearly all of her chest cavity grotesquely eaten away.
Inuyasha shook his brother’s form lightly, “Sesshoumaru. Wake up, damn it.” He had such a pout on his face, he looked as if he was about to slap the lord across the face for not listening to him.
Kagome knelt beside him placing a hand on his shoulder, “Inuyasha we should get him out of the rain and bandage his wounds. Lets take him back to the village. We can stay there through the storm.”
Inuyasha nodded and difficultly lifted his brother’s form, settling the demon on his back like he usually carried the miko, though it was one thing to carry a ninety-five pound school girl, but quite another to carry a two hundred and fifty pound youkai. “ I’m going ahead.” he said as he took off for the village he’d left only a few moments ago.
Shippo looked ground-ward as he stood beside Miroku while the rain continued to wash over them, “Somehow I feel like it’s our fault.” he mumbled.
Miroku made a small noise of acknowledgement, seemingly also to blame himself. “Let’s go, Shippo.” He muttered as he went to join the two girls as they climbed onto the cat youkai‘s back.

Inuyasha arrived at the village in little time, frenetic to get his brother indoors and treated. He rushed into one of the buildings, begging the villagers for help. “Please! Just for a night! I promise we will leave tomorrow! He‘ll die! Please!”
“It doesn’t do us any good helping youkai vermin like you! Get out! Get out of here, Demon!”
He tried another residence…and another…
“Get out!”
“Good! He deserves to die!”
“Out! Demon!”
“I hope you die with him!”
“You aren’t welcome here, beast!”
The hanyou felt frustration building up inside him, stinging as if it could burst any moment. Every house insulted and rejected him and his brother. He felt as if he were a child again, asking the other children if he might play with them, but receiving nothing but cruel and hateful words. He was seriously considering resorting to violence, but then relief flooded over him in wonderful amounts. “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much! I will pay you back for this! I promise!”
“Well, I wouldn’t be a good doctor if I refused a patient, especially one so critical. Set him down in that room, and I will tend to him.” croaked the wrinkled old man as he picked up his medical kit and hobbled into the previously directed room.
Inuyasha did as the old man said, lying the limp body of his brother onto the futon. He looked on, anxiously concerned, as the medicine man stuffed anything that was hanging out, that shouldn’t have been, back inside, and began to clean and stitch the demon lord’s bleeding wounds.
The kind doctor cracked an eye up at the on looking hanyou, “He’s very gravely injured, young sir. Are you sure you want to be in here watching such gore?”
Inuyasha looked away from his brother’s pale face and to the crinkled mug of the old man, “I want to be with him right now.” he muttered in a voice that seemed foreign to him.
The old man nodded and continued to work thoroughly trying to heal the youkai’s horrific injuries. “You know, I probably wouldn’t have helped you, if I didn’t see such a determination in those golden eyes of yours, young man. I envy such love.”
Inuyasha nearly screeched out a denial, but bit his tongue at the last moment, “Maybe….” he looked back to Sesshoumaru’s seemingly peaceful visage. ‘I must love him…otherwise… why would I be doing all this for him…?’ he thought ‘Why did I ask him to be my brother? I want him to acknowledge me. To respect me. I want him to love me…is that why I asked him…?’ The hanyou frowned as he placed his hand down upon the youkai’s frosty one and squeezed the bloodied fingers. “You better pull through this, you jerk. You have to keep your promise. You’re not getting off the hook that easy.”
