Winds that could freeze ones core swept through the small camp. Every one huddled together for warmth. Inuyasha on the end, Kagome next to him, Sango next to her and Miroku was on the other end. Shippou curled in Kagome’s lap, Kilala in Sango’s. The fire was taking bitter abuse from the light powder of snow. Winter was in full force. The group gathered closer together. Kagome had dragged a huge king-sized flannel and goose- down blanket with them. Inuyasha complained at first. He wasn’t complaining any more. The fire was almost out when Miroku got up to get more wood.
“Should we be letting him go on his own?” Kagome asked. The snow made the top of the blue and green blanket white.
“I’ll go. I’m used to being out during the winter.” Inuyasha said. Kagome watched him walk away. She and Sango moved closer. They fell asleep like that.
“So,” Miroku started, “how was it?”
“How was what?” Inuyasha picked up a piece of wood.
“Your first time.” Miroku grabbed another.
“WHAT?!?!”
“It was with Kagome in her room, right?”
“Why would I tell you a thing like that?”
“We’re both men here, you can tell me.” Miroku said walking slowly back to camp.
“You really are a pervert.” Inuyasha looked at the monk. Miroku smiled knowingly at him. The fire had died completely as far as they could see. As they made their way back to the clearing, Kagome, Sango, Shippou and Kilala where all missing. A figure knelt picking up food that they had left out and putting it into Kagome’s bag. The figure was hooded in black fur.
“Who are you!? Where are Kagome and the others?” Inuyasha asked. The figure stood and turned. Her orange eyes taking in the two that stood before her.
“You must be the ladies’ companions, Inuyasha and Miroku, correct? I am Hayai, The leader of the Tora demon tribe. Do not worry, your women are safe, as are the child and the cat. One of my scouts happened upon them. He said they where curled together without warmth or shelter, so my Tigers came and moved them to our camp. The Miko woke and asked if I could come and wait for you to arrive.” Hayai said lowering her hood. Her orange- brown hair was streaked with black. She bowed slightly to them. She knelt and gathered the rest of their things into the bag, “We should head back now. The night is only getting colder.” Hayai picked up the bag. Inuyasha and Miroku stayed starring at her. She sighed, “You don’t have time for this. I’m sure the Miko and the Slayer are worried by now. They did unfortunately wake with a fright.”
“I guess we should follow her.” Miroku started to walk towards the demoness.
“Wait.” Inuyasha said. He starred into Hayai’s eyes, “You expect us to go with you deep into the woods, following blindly?”
She sighed again. “Stay here if it will bring you peace of mind. I must return to my people.” With that, the demoness walked into the trees.
“I don't trust her.” Inuyasha growled.
“She seemed friendly enough, and if she meant to harm us she would have already.” Miroku said thoughtfully.
“She could be Naraku.” Inuyasha said. Hayai peeked back through the trees, *that child was right, these two are stubborn. * She sat down next to the tree. *The snow will make it difficult for the half breed to follow my scent.*
“Inuyasha, what choice do we have?” Miroku asked.
Inuyasha grumbled, “None.” They started walking Hayai’s direction. She stood as they approached.
“So you have decided to come after all.” She said turning back towards her camp. The two gave each other one last look before following the demoness. The look said it all. If anyone in their group was injured, she was dead.
They walked for about an hour before they reached the clearing. A huge fire roared surrounded by demons eating, talking, some of the children were playing. One of the children, Inuyasha noticed, was Shippou. They all had hair streaked like Hayai’s. Some had white with black streaks, but the majority was orange- brown. Kagome rushed over to Inuyasha. She hugged him.
“Aren’t they nice? They brought us here and Lady Hayai said we could stay with them as long as we need.” She smiled.
“Is that true?” Miroku said smiling at some of the young Tora women.
Hayai noticed she growled at him, “You all may stay as long as you like as long as you, Monk, behave yourself.”
Miroku looked shocked, “I am a servant of Buddha, I mean no harm.” That received a half laugh from more than one person.
“The ladies have been regaling us with stories of your travels.” Said Hayai. She motioned to Sango who was talking with children at her feet. Sango obviously finished her story because a small commotion came from the group: “Tell us more,” “Yeah more!.”
She laughed, “Well let me think,” she paused, “oh, we happened to come across a village that was being threatened by a demon who disguised himself as the water god of their lake…”
Kagome and Inuyasha sat next to the fire while Miroku did “Palm readings” ‘Oh look at this! You will have many children one fathered possibly by a man of the cloth…,' Sango continued her story telling and Shippou continued to play with the children.
Hayai sat next to the couple. “You two smell like each other. I knew as soon as I smelled him he was your mate.” She said to Kagome. Kagome looked at Inuyasha. He was starring very intently at the fire. Hayai looked at him, “Have I said something wrong?” Inuyasha looked at her. He sat for a moment trying to put the situation into words.
“Lady Hayai, Lady Hayai!” One of the tigers called. She looked up. The tiger was carrying a lifeless body in his arms. It was one of the children.
“Who has done this?!” Hayai glared at the man. He looked down, “Don’t know. All I was a pelt of a baboon.”
“Naraku! Which way did he go?” Inuyasha asked. The tiger pointed to the East. “Lets go. Thank you for all your hospitably.” He grabbed Kagome’s bag.
The demoness stood, “I will go too. One of my pride was killed. I will seek revenge for her.” Inuyasha nodded. Hayai gathered her cloak and a few supplies and headed off.
The next night, the group passed by the mountains. There they found Koga. Inuyasha put a hand on his Tetsusaiga.
Koga growled at him. “Well, mutt-face, I’d love to spar with you, but I’m hot on Naraku’s trail,” he looked at Hayai, “I see you have a new addition to your group.”
She bow slightly to him, “I am Hayai, The leader of the Tora tribe. You are Koga, are you not? I have heard of you.”
“Have you?” He stood in front of her, “I’ve heard of you too. The leader of the nomadic tribe rumored to have migrated from another land.”
“Inuyasha, if they got together you wouldn’t have to worry about Koga anymore," *Not that you had to worry in the first place* Kagome thought the last. Inuyasha nodded.
“We should keep moving before we lose Naraku’s trail.” Miroku said.
Koga looked at him. “I’ll come too.”
“No way puppy!” Inuyasha growled. Koga growled back.
“Is there a reason for you to need to come too?” Hayai asked.
“Naraku kill half my pack. I will see him dead for it.” Koga said, anger filling his eyes.
“Inuyasha, we ought bring him. He needs revenge for those he lost.” Hayai said.
“We should take him along.” Sango said. She quickly added, “His skill would be a good addition to ours.” Inuyasha growled a bit. Kagome leaned up and whispered in his ear. Inuyasha's eyes widened a little as he looked at her. She nodded.
“Fine. He can come.” Inuyasha walked off. Kagome followed him.
“We should make a fire and wait for them to come back.” Miroku said picking up pieces of wood. Koga watched them walk off. *It seems Kagome has made her choice. I never should have allowed that dog to protect her.*
“Koga, the fire’s going. Come and sit.” Hayai suggested. While they all sat around the fire discussing what to do about Naraku, Kagome was fulfilling her promise to Inuyasha (-_^). After a while the conversation moved from war tactics to more uplifting topics. After a while, the group heard Inuyasha cry out.
“Can’t that dog keep quiet?” Koga said.
“It sounds like Inuyasha’s in trouble. We should go help.” Shippou stood up.
“I don’t think He’s in pain.” Miroku said grabbing the moving demon child by the tail. Shippou sat next to the monk confused. The group looked around and tried to start another conversation. After a few moments they heard to bushes rustle and saw Kagome and Inuyasha emerge. The rest fell silent.
“You worried Shippou.” Miroku said looking at them. The look was enough. Kagome blushed.
“I told you to be quieter.” Inuyasha said to her. The blush deepened.
“It wasn’t her we heard.” Koga said. He smelled fresh sex on them both. *Just as well,* he thought. But still Koga glared at Inuyasha.
Hours passed and the group fell asleep. Koga alone stayed awake, looking at the sky. The moon was days way from being full. He looked at Inuyasha with his head in Kagome’s lap. Koga still resented the fact she had chosen a half breed over him. He looked at Hayai sleeping peacefully against a rock. *She could be a good mate.* Koga half smiled at the fact he was even thinking that. It was true she was beautiful, but he should know her longer be for thinking nonsense. Koga closed his eyes and drifted to sleep.
The next few days brought unusually sunny weather and no sign of Naraku. The group, plus two, walked through a particularly woody area when confronted by Kagura. She smiled and opened her fan. Five demons rushed them at once. Hayai hands turned into tiger paws and she extended her claws. She jumped and slashed at one of the demons. It flew through the trees.
“I’ll go finish it off.” She said and ran off in its direction. The demon stood as she approached. It rushed her. Hayai slashed at it again. The demon dodged the attack and smacked her to the ground. The world swam for a moment. When her vision cleared the demon was upon her teeth snapping. Hayai pushed it back. She kicked it against a tree. She stood in a battle stance.
“Hayai, get down!” A voice shouted from behind her. Hayai hit the ground. A demon landed on its side in front of her. A moment later Koga’s feet stood facing her. He offered a hand. Koga examined Hayai’s paw, “What’s with your hand?”
“I am a tiger. I can change any part of my body that I choose.” She said changing it into her normal hand and back into a paw. The demons stood and came at them again. Hayai dropped her black fur cloak to reveal a brown leather happi {half- length kamono}. She untied it and changed into a full tiger and attacked the first demon, tearing it’s neck wide open. Hayai turned to see Koga on the ground with the demon on top of him. She rammed into it sending it skidding to the ground.
“Where did those two go?” Kagome asked after she shot their last demon with a sacred arrow.
“Koga went off to help Lady Hayai.” Miroku said.
“I hope they’re okay.” Sango added.
“They're fine. That wolf won’t die.” Inuyasha sheathed the Tetsusaiga.
“Hope you’re right.” Kagome said.
The last demon’s spine glistened through the blood. Koga looked at Hayai. She was retying the Happi back in place. The cloak slid over the leather garment.
“Thank you for helping me.” Said Hayai, “You’re among friends with my pride.”
“You helped me too.” Koga said. “Lets go finish those other demons. Knowing Inuyasha, he needs our help.” They walked back though the trees. The ground was littered with demon parts. Sango was hold a bandage over a wound on Miroku’s left arm. Kagome was trying to get a look at a wound on Inuyasha's stomach. They all looked at the two emerging into the clearing.
“What happened to you two?” Kagome asked.
“The Demons where a little difficult.” Hayai said.
“Nothin’ we couldn’t handle.” Koga closed his eyes and leaned against a tree. The group decided to walk further past the thicket of trees before making camp. Kagura watched them pass with a smirk on her face. *Naraku will want to know of this new development,* She flew to Naraku’s castle on her feather.
