A/N: This chapter is a little long...hope no one complains ^_^
Disclaimer: Don’t own Inuyasha...do I really have to put these at the beginning of every chapter? How about I say that this disclaimer covers all the subsequent chapters until I think of something really clever to say? (it’ll never happen...the cleverness, I mean)
Enjoy.
Chapter 3
Invitations
One week and one barely passed test later, Kagome stood behind midnight blue curtains, hearing the crowd on the other side of them go abruptly quiet when the lights fell. She had thought she would be doing a new routine tonight, had planned on it. But Kaede had told her to do the same one, had told her that the club had received such a positive response that once a week Kagome would do the routine.
And so, as the music started, as her hips began swaying, Kagome lost herself to the music, felt it wrap around her in a lover's embrace, moving her body with its rhythmic fingers. When her finger came to her mouth, when the crowd roared its pleasure, she couldn't help but smile. She suddenly felt very impish, knowing that the men at the tables around her were watching her, were there to see just her.
And, as she turned away from the crowd, looked over her shoulder and smacked her ass, her eyes drifted to a table that sat in shadows near the back of the room. She could practically feel his hot, golden gaze on her. Kagome licked her lips, receiving another shout from the crowd at what they thought was an enticing move made just for them. The lights snapped off and she made her way carefully off the stage.
She began to unlace her boots, thanking one of the girls who had fetched her tie from the stage. Freeing her feet from their confinement, she unpinned the fedora from her head and let her raven hair fall around her shoulders and face. She was bent over, shaking her head, running her fingers through her hair, when she saw a pair of red, opened toed heels in her line of vision. She knew those shoes, she had helped their owner pick them out. Sighing, she lifted her head and looked up at Sango.
Who was wearing a very pleased grin. "He asked for you again," Sango said.
Kagome sighed and shook her head. "Not tonight, Sango," she said, picking up a brush. "I can't do two dances again tonight."
The snap of her tie, the sound of male breath hitching in an uncontrollable intake of air.
Sango sat in the chair next to her. "I talked to Kaede about it," she said, leaning forward. "She said that Mr. Takahashi is prepared to pay quite handsomely for your entertainment."
Kagome frowned. She wasn't particularly greedy, money was not something that drove her life as it did so many others'. She preferred to do things because she liked to do them. It was one of the reasons she had decided to go to school for dancing, instead of medicine like her grandfather had wanted.
The feel of firm chest muscles under her fingers, of tight leg muscles under her hands.
"He wants you, Kagome," Sango said, breaking into her thoughts. "He also said something to Kaede about hiring you for private parties."
Kagome's frown deepened, not sure if her friend was trying to push her into this or not. Not sure that she wouldn't fall over if she danced for this man tonight.
"I'm very flattered, Sango, I really am. But I'm just so exhausted."
The feel of warm breath on her cheeks, shoulders, of something hard between her legs.
Sango made a sympathetic face and covered Kagome's hand with her own. "I understand, hun." She gave the raven-haired girl a small hug and a bright smile. "I'll tell Kaede to tell him that you don't feel up to it tonight."
The sound of a lust-filled moan vibrating against her chest and in her ears.
"Wait, Sango." Kagome reached a hand out and grabbed the other girl's arm as she turned to leave. "I can...I can dance tonight," she said, softly, trying to hide the desire that she knew had crept into her voice. "Tonight," she repeated, more firmly and a little louder this time. "But the next time he wants a private dance from me, it has to be on a night that I don't perform."
Sango's eyes widened. "Are you sure, Kagome?" she asked, concern in her eyes.
Kagome hesitated before nodding. "Yeah," she said, looking up at her friend. "I'm sure." She paused, felt the beginnings of a sly smile touch the corners of her lips. "Besides, I’m in the mood for Takahashi for dinner," she said, her eyes sparkling as she ran her tongue over the front of her teeth.
Laughter echoed around the room and down the hall as Sango went to find Kaede.
Ten minutes later, Kagome stood in the shadows of the room -aptly named the Blood Room- waiting. She nervously pulled the fedora a little lower, making sure that all the pins and clips were secure, that it wouldn't slip out of place. When the light over the door opposite of her lit, she took a deep breath and tried to calm herself.
Golden eyes once again reflected the light back at her with an exotic glow. His silver hair was pulled back in a loose tail at his neck and he flipped the end of it over his shoulder as he took another step into the room. She watched him search for her, caught her breath when his eyes found hers and held them. A small smile flickered over his face and he walked further into the room, stopping next to the chair.
"It is good to see you again, Mr. Takahashi," she said, taking the step that pulled her out of the shadows and into the dim light. "Please, have a seat." She watched as he took his place, never taking his eyes off her. He ran long, tanned fingers over his black slacks, reached up to roll the sleeves of his red shirt up.
"Take your hat off," he said, softly, when she moved to stand behind him.
She felt her fingers twitch on the back of the chair, wondered why she was so willing to do this one thing for him when she had refused all others. She looked up to find him watching her in the mirror, saw his heavy lidded eyes looking at her through long, silvery white lashes.
Was all the hair on his body that color? came the unbidden thought, causing her cheeks to instantly catch fire.
She watched an amused smile grace his lips. Kagome took a deep, calming breath and then shook her head.
"Like the last time, Mr. Takahashi, I must refuse your request," she said, congratulating herself on keeping her voice steady.
There was a pause as their eyes met in the mirror. "What are you hiding under there?" he finally asked, his voice still soft.
Kagome opened her mouth to angrily deny that she was hiding anything. But she found, oddly, that he was quite correct in his assumptions. She was hiding. In a place where it was considered good form to "take it all off," she, Kagome Higurashi, was hiding her identity.
She smiled a little at him, and let the smile grow when she saw his eyes widen slightly in surprise. She leaned down, her lips close to his ear, and, much like the last time, licked her lips."You do not like mysteries, Mr. Takahashi?" she asked, softly, allowing breath to move strands of his hair. "You are not satisfied with just my body?" His response was a soft grunt. She parted her lips, let out a small sigh. "I thought I was here to dance for you, Mr. Takahashi. If you would like conversation, then I can show you to the Cloud Room where there are plenty of very interesting women that you can converse with." She paused again, watched as the muscles in his tanned, nearly hairless forearms bunched as he clenched his hands into fists.
"Here are the rules..."
*
Inuyasha Takahashi thought of himself as a man in control.
He had spent many years pushing away urges, trying to mold himself to be more like his brother.
But when that damn girl had unbuttoned his shirt, had slipped her fingers up his bare chest, had bent her head forward and nipped him right where his neck and shoulder met, he had nearly lost it. He had felt his hips buck up slightly as his hands clenched the seat of the chair. The already red room had turned a deeper shade of crimson before his eyes. He felt the concealment spell that he had wrapped tightly around himself slip. Had felt, for a brief instant, the pointy ears on the top of his head twitch.
Had caught himself just as his hands were about to grab onto the woman's waist to push her more firmly onto him.
Instead, he threw his head back and let out a groan that vibrated through his chest, which kept vibrating as the girl finished her dance.
When she stood, when she had started to walk away from him, he most certainly lost control of his mouth.
"Why did you do that?" he asked, sharply, desire making him growl.
She turned to him, and he was sure that her eyes were wide in shock. "Do what, Mr. Takahashi?" She licked her lips and his groin tightened even more. "I thought you requested that I dance for you."
He narrowed his eyes, adjusted himself and stood. He took two steps toward her and then stopped, realizing for the first time that he nearly towered over her. At the moment, it wasn't his goal to terrify her. He sniffed the air, unobtrusively, wanting to fill his nose with the scent of her arousal again. In this dance, as in the last, she had become aroused by her own actions, it seemed. The scent of her had wrapped around him, intoxicating him like a strong drug.
"You bit me," he said, watching as she licked her lips again. When she didn't deny her actions, he took another step forward. She raised her head a little, but the light still didn't penetrate under the brim of her hat. Inuyasha wondered how long it had taken her to figure out just how far she could lift her chin before someone could see what lay hidden in the shadows. He suddenly felt her gaze focused behind him, saw her shake her head slightly.
"I told you at the beginning, that I may touch you as much as I like," she said, softly.
"As much as you like," he said, trying not to growl at her. "Not as you like."
"I'm sorry if I have angered you, Mr. Takahashi," she said, demurely, bowing her head.
A part of him, the part that loved control like a selfish child who clung to even the least used toy, made a pleased rumble vibrate in his chest at her show of submission. Another part of him wasn‘t sure if it liked seeing her that way.
"The dance is over," he stated. She nodded her head. "May I take your hat off? May I touch you?"
She looked up at him, shadows still falling over her face, and took a step back. "No, Mr. Takahashi. My contract with the club states that I do not have to show my face. Ever."
He clenched his fists, resisting the urge to ignore her words and reach out anyway. Willing himself to be calm, feeling the blood finally recede from between his legs and equalize itself throughout his body, Inuyasha nodded.
"Okay, Jingi," he said, softly, taking another step forward. He stood close enough to her that all he had to do was lean forward a little to touch her. Her scent once again wrapped around him and he almost sighed in pleasure. "I will respect your wishes and your contract. But will you honor a request of mine?" He saw her jaw clench, saw her body go rigid as she tried not to step away from him.
"What is it?" she asked.
He felt her breath fan over his cheek as he leaned his head down, placed his mouth near her ear. "Sit with me tomorrow night," he whispered.
He felt her hesitation. "Just sit with you?" she asked, finally.
Inuyasha pulled back a little. "Yes," he said, smiling down at her. He reached a hand up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, pulled away at the last minute. Did he imagine it, or did her breath stop for an instant? Did she start to lean toward his hand? "You don't even have to talk to me," he said. "I'm not asking for an intriguing conversationalist."
He watched as she tensed, as she visibly bristled at his words. She hesitated again, turned her head away to look at the mirror. "It will cost you extra," she whispered.
His smiled widened, showing white teeth, the canines a little longer than normal, a little sharper. "I don't talk about money, my dear." He took a step away from her, giving her back her personal space. "May I take that as a yes?"
She nodded. "Yes," she said. She turned and walked to the door she had entered the room through. She stopped, her hand on the doorknob, looked over her shoulder at him. "Are you so terribly lonely, Mr. Takahashi, that you must ask a stripper to have dinner with you?" she asked, so softly that, after she had disappeared through the door, Inuyasha was unsure he had heard her correctly.
Inuyasha Takahashi thought of himself as a man in control.
So why was it that a high-class stripper had just made him feel as if control was slipping through his grasp?
*
Kagome Higurashi stared blankly at the television, her mind not even remotely following the antics of the cartoon with an absurd fat guy and his family. Her cheeks suddenly blazed as she replayed the words she had said to Inuyasha Takahashi before she left the room.
The sound of the lock on the front door turning scraped through her thoughts, making her turn her head slightly. Sango stumbled through the door, shouting something incomprehensible at someone outside the door.
"No, no, no, no," she said, her words slurred slightly together from alcohol and giggles. "You can't come in. The famous Jingi does not have her face covered."
Kagome scrambled off the couch, placed herself behind the door, adding her weight to her friend's.
"Get them out of here!" she hissed at the brunette. Her words were nearly drowned out by loud, drunk catcalls.
Sango looked over at her, brown eyes suddenly clear. Her next words held no hint of drunkenness. "Get out of here, you crazy lechers," she said, making a shooing motion. She pushed the door closed, throwing the dead bolt and the lock on the knob. "Sorry," she said to Kagome. "I didn't think they would want to come in."
Kagome eyed the other woman suspiciously. "Are you drunk?" she asked.
Sango laughed. "Hardly. But it makes the guys loosen up a little if they think that they're actions won't be remembered in the morning." Sango toed her shoes off, dropping her purse on the dining room table as she made her way to the couch. She sunk into it with a loud sigh. "What say we do the spa thing tomorrow?" she asked, as Kagome sat down next to her.
Raven hair fell around her face as she nodded. Tucking it behind her ears, she leaned over and rested against Sango. The brunette responded by shifting and putting her arms around her friend.
"So, how did the dance go?" she asked as the animation they were watching faded into a commercial.
Kagome sighed. "He wants me to have dinner with him tomorrow," she said.
Sango looked down, the expression on her face almost comical. "Really?" she said. "What did you do for that to happen?"
"I bit him," Kagome said, trying not to laugh.
Sango threw her head back and laughed. "You bite the guy and he wants you to have dinner with him? Damn, most guys would have called you a freak and then proceeded to try to get you fired."
"Yeah. I thought he was mad at first. He looked mad. But then he stood up." Kagome covered her mouth as a giggled worked its way out of his throat. "He had to, um, adjust himself before he could walk." Sango laughed at that. "He wanted me to take my hat off, the same as the last time. He asked to take it off after the dance." Kagome paused. "He asked to touch me." She closed her eyes, remembering how close he had been to her, how his heat had pushed at her, had almost made her stumble away from him.
"No touchy," Sango said and Kagome nodded.
"I told him."
"So, dinner with Inuyasha Takahashi tomorrow night. This definitely means we need a spa day tomorrow. You need to be relaxed and on your toes," Sango said, giving Kagome's shoulders a small squeeze.
The raven-haired girl snorted slightly. "Hardly," she said. "He told me he didn't expect -what where his words? oh yes- 'an intriguing conversationalist.'"
A low growl escaped Sango. "I hope you didn't let that slide?"
Kagome smiled and shook her head. "No, I asked him if he was so lonely that he had to ask a stripper to have dinner with him."
Sango snorted, paused, snorted again before laughing out loud. "That's my girl," she said, in between snorts of laughter. "Well, all's well when a Takahashi is put in his place. Come on, girl, it's time for bed." She stood, pulling a groaning Kagome with her. "Now we must really make sure that you are in top form tomorrow."
Kagome grinned, letting Sango pull her to her bedroom. She paused at the door. "Thanks, Sango," she began to say.
"Go to bed!" Sango said, cutting her off. "You will hate yourself tomorrow if you have bags and circles under your eyes!"
Laughing, Kagome retreated to her room.
