Sweet Talkin' Son of a Preacher Man
The group had decided to take a few days to rest instead of continuing on their travels. Kagome and Sango wanted to spend some more time near the lake just relaxing, and neither Inuyasha nor
Kirara, who were mostly in charge of where they went and how quickly, protested the idea. So the decision was pretty much unanimous, and if anyone noticed that Inuyasha was acting far
quieter than usual no one said anything.
The decision pleased Miroku immensely. A few days off were always good, and a little bit of space was needed now and then between people who spent most of their time in close company.
And staying here meant that Sango and Kagome were probably going to be bathing in the lake again.
He was humming cheerily to himself as he walked down the road to a patch of berries they had found nearby. He had volunteered to replenish their supplies by picking some of the berries; an easy
enough job, and when he was done he might wander over to the lake... to look for more berries, of course. He wasn't paying too much attention to where he was going at the moment, and when Inuyasha dropped out of a tree to land beside him he just about jumped out of
his skin.
"Gahh!" Miroku threw up his hands in an automatic block. "Sweet Buddha, watch where you're going Inuyasha! You just about landed on me."
"Sorry," was Inuyasha's uncharacteristic reply, and that caught his attention. He looked at Inuyasha, his eyes wide with surprise, and the half breed blushed slightly. "Ah, I was wondering," he mumbled,
then took a deep breath and said more clearly. "I wanted to talk to you about something."
Miroku just stared at him.
Inuyasha's hesitant nervousness turned into an annoyed glare. "Fine," he grumbled, and turned to leave.
"No, wait!" Miroku grabbed at his sleeve. "I'm sorry Inuyasha. It's just that... since I sincerely doubt you're going to ask me about the joys of serving Buddha, there's really only one other thing you
could want to talk about, and..." He trailed off. "Frankly, I never thought you the type to ask advice about women. Especially from me."
Inuyasha flushed hotly. "That's not it," he growled. He took a deep breath; he needed to talk to Miroku and this wasn't going to work if he kept getting annoyed with the monk every five minutes. Not letting himself get annoyed was going to be difficult, considering how truly irritating Miroku could be, even when he wasn't trying. "It's about... well that's not quite it," he fumbled. "Look, I need
to talk to someone and I think Kagome might get weirded out, and I know you better than Sango. And..." He frowned. "It is kind of a sex thing."
Miroku sat down. He really hoped there was something there for him to sit on, because he hadn't really looked, but the shock was too great for him to remain standing. Fortunately there was a large
boulder perfectly positioned. After a few seconds of him just staring, Inuyasha was starting to look mad again and Miroku hastened to placate him.
"I'm sorry!" He decided to keep a good hold on the half breed's sleeve; if this was going to continue to be such a shocking conversation, he was bound to be doing a lot more vacant staring and
he really didn't want Inuyasha leaving before he'd finished saying what he wanted to talk about. "It's just... I seriously never thought..." He shook his head. "Okay," he blinked and smiled his most
charming smile. "What do you want to know?"
Inuyasha folded his arms. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea...
"It's okay." Miroku's smile widened, if that was possible, and his eyes seemed to ooze trust. "You can tell me anything."
"How do you do that?" Inuyasha asked, in sudden morbid curiosity.
"Do what?" Miroku blinked innocently.
Inuyasha shook his head. "Never mind." He took a deep breath turned away from Miroku slightly. "So... Hypothetically... What if..."
"Inuyasha." He turned at the sound of his name. Miroku's face had lost its overdone look and now expressed his sincere interest in Inuyasha's problem. "It's alright," he said, and Inuyasha suddenly
felt that it was. He crouched beside where Miroku sat and closed his eyes.
"I... It's Sesshomaru." He opened his eyes quickly, almost afraid to but needing to see Miroku's response.
Miroku's response was to loose his eyebrows in his hairline. "Sesshomaru!? Wait... let's back up. Sesshomaru has a girlfriend?" Inuyasha blushed. "Or," Miroku continued slowly, examining
Inuyasha's face carefully and putting together the pieces of what Inuyasha had said- a sort of question not really about girls but about sex... "You... and Sesshomaru? Are..." he stumbled a little,
"have... feelings for each other?"
"I don't know!" Inuyasha pressed the side of his fisted hands against the rock Miroku was sitting on. "He..." Inuyasha bit off a growl and stood up. "That time, a couple months ago, when we spilt
up for a few days while Kagome went home and I was late getting back?" Miroku nodded, acknowledging that he remembered that incident, but inside his mind was awhirl. Inuyasha... and
Sesshomaru?!? Never mind that the demon was his brother, he'd only tried to kill them countless times...
"Well, I... ran into this... I don't know who or what she was other than she was powerful. She..." He trailed off, more of his distress showing on his face than he would have liked. How to tell this?
What to tell?? How much was relevant; what did Miroku need to know?
Inuyasha was surprised when he felt Miroku's hand on his arm, and he looked up into the monk's sympathetic and understanding eyes. "You...?" he breathed, almost afraid to say it.
"No," Miroku said, just as softly, "but, I knew... someone who..." He squeezed Inuyasha's arm. "I'm sorry. For what it's worth."
"Thanks," Inuyasha said, and he was surprised at how much better he felt having told the other man. "Sesshomaru was there too," he said, continuing with his story. "She made us..." He paused. "I just tried to make it as easy as I could for him, cause I think he was worse off than me- she liked picking on him more. Anyway," he shook himself, "we killed the bitch and I came back and that you know. But last night Sesshomaru came here." Inuyasha frowned as he thought
about it, trying again to figure out why Sesshomaru had acted as he had, and he almost forgot he had an audience. "I asked him what he wanted, but he wouldn't say. We just..." he glanced up at Miroku briefly. "And then he left. And I want to know why! That's all," he finished lamely, staring at the ground.
"Why what?" Miroku asked softly.
"Why... why he came. Why he... Why he left, too, suddenly like he did. It was like he was running away." Inuyasha looked up. "Sesshomaru doesn't run away from anything. Why'd he run?"
"Hmmm," was all Miroku could say. "Well," he managed finally, "I can see why you didn't want to talk to Kagome about this. At any rate, your main problem seems to be Sesshomaru and his supposed motivation, correct?" He pursed his lips as he thought, and Inuyasha crouched beside the rock. Together they made a perfect picture of a wise monk distributing holy wisdom to an eager subordinate, which, if anyone had bothered to share this observation with them, would have made them both laugh uproariously- if they bothered to take time away from their problems to do so, that is.
"I could smell him. He... desired me." Inuyasha glanced at Miroku's face, wondering if he was giving too much information. Humans were hard to judge sometimes; living as they did in almost complete
ignorance of the world around them, sampling it only with their meager senses, they often reacted strangely when he revealed just how much his senses told him. Miroku only blinked and seemed to
take the information in stride.
"So..." The monk seemed to be thinking out loud. "He sought you out, presumably for the purpose of... having physical relations," Miroku wriggled his eyebrows and Inuyasha growled at him in mock-threat, "and then left immediately after in a manner that would indicate that he was fleeing from something." He frowned. "Well Inuyasha, personally," he met Inuyasha's eager gaze, "I think he's just as confused as you are."
Inuyasha's eyes flew open wide. Sesshomaru... confused? That was a novel idea...
"If you said you could smell his desire, and you weren't mistaken..." Inuyasha shook his head firmly, and Miroku nodded, "then he must have some sort of... carnal feelings for you. Though... when you say he desired you, what exactly do you mean?"
Inuyasha shrugged. "He wanted sex. I suppose... he could have wanted someone other than me. I probably couldn't smell that. But he really enjoyed it- I smelled that."
Miroku blushed slightly at the strength of Inuyasha's affirmation. "So, he wanted... sex," he stumbled over the word as he hadn't in years, "and he deliberately sought you out to share those feelings with you." He frowned slightly as he considered the information. "I would say that this experience the both of you had has affected him somehow- either he sees you as someone he can trust with feelings that are possibly perceived as a flaw or liability, since you were a part of it when he was perhaps at his greatest weakness; or the experience has somehow awakened sincere feelings for you in him- feelings which may not necessarily be carnal, but which he can find
no other way to express."
Inuyasha nodded thoughtfully. They sat for a minute, and then Inuyasha stood. "Thanks," he said.
Miroku smiled. "My pleasure. You know..." He hesitated. "I think you should talk to Kagome about this. Not necessarily right now, but whenever you do figure out what's going on between you and
Sesshomaru. I think she'll appreciate the confidence, and... I think she'll surprise you."
Inuyasha mulled over his words, then nodded- accepting them as words intended in good spirit, but not necessarily as advice he was going to follow. He turned and started back toward the camp, and Miroku sat for a minute before resuming his trip to the berry patch. He still needed to do his job, and he should probably hurry if he wanted to still have time to catch Sango and Kagome in the bath.
That thought started him humming again.
He obviously didn't learn from past experiences, because once again he wasn't really watching where he was going and as he stepped around a tree to get to the patch, which was slightly off the road, he ran smack into Sesshomaru.
--
"Kagome?"
She looked up to see Inuyasha standing not far away. She smiled at him and put aside the things she had been repacking into her backpack after searching through it for a special treat she had
brought for Shippou. "What is it Inuyasha?"
He looked away, then took a deep breath and met her eyes. "I have to go. Away. For a bit."
Kagome frowned, puzzled. "But... Why?"
He sighed. "It's... Sesshomaru." Her eyes flew open wide, and he continued. "There's something... going on. And there's something else to, and I'm not really sure what it is but I can smell it. Anyway," he said as she stared at him, confusion written on her face, "the point is, I think he needs some help. And there's some other stuff I need to work out with him, and..." He trailed off, looking at her. "And you showed me how important family is, you and Sango. He's... all I have left. I think this could be a chance to..."
She smiled at him enthusiastically. "That's wonderful Inuyasha. I hope you can work everything out!" She came over to him and, taking him hesitantly in her arms, hugged him. He smiled back at her and returned the embrace wholeheartedly.
--
Miroku looked up. And looked up. And lost his eyebrows somewhere above his hairline again and dropped his jaw somewhere down around his knees. "Ahh, S... Sesshomaru..." he stammered, but the demon barely noticed him. Sesshomaru inhaled deeply and seemed to suddenly observe something. He turned golden eyes on Miroku and reached out to grab the monk by the throat. He inhaled again, and Miroku's eyes widened further.
Abruptly, Sesshomaru closed his eyes and released the hold he had on Miroku. The monk paused for a moment, frozen by the unexpectedness of what had just happened. And after what Inuyasha had just told him... What was Sesshomaru doing here? He could probably smell Inuyasha on Miroku, or so Miroku thought, having been recently reminded by the half breed himself about the amazing attributes of dog demon noses. Was that what he was looking for- Inuyasha?
"Ah," Miroku ventured hesitantly, wondering why he didn't leave when he had the chance- though his fingers did pick nervously at the rosary around his other hand. As soon as he spoke Sesshomaru fixed golden eyes on him. "I was wondering what business you had in the area," he ventured lamely, but trudged on ahead with, "You see I just spoke with Inuyasha," and was it just his imagination or did Sesshomaru go suddenly still at those words?
"Inuyasha," he said softly, and Miroku figured the question of what was wrong with Sesshomaru was answered right then and there.
Sesshomaru regarded Miroku as a tiger might a lamb, but Miroku swallowed down his unease and smiled brightly. "Well?" Sesshomaru asked, unwilling, but unable to resist. "He sent you to tell me
something?" Sesshomaru frowned; that was unlike Inuyasha, to avoid a direct confrontation- but he supposed he wasn't one to talk.
"No," Miroku said.
"Then why do you not leave me!?" Sesshomaru snarled in a rare display of emotion and vented his frustration on a nearby tree as he turned away from Miroku.
Miroku only stared at him. Wow, he thought. If Inuyasha had it bad, Sesshomaru seemed to be worse. The demon looked harried and seriously sleep deprived. "Why do you not leave?" he countered. "What do you want here?"
Sesshomaru turned blazing eyes on him and Miroku shivered. He didn't think Sesshomaru would kill him... If he hadn't already, there was a good chance he wasn't going to. But he was acting unprecedentedly unpredictable...
"What I want is none of your concern, human." And with that Sesshomaru turned and started to leave.
"Wait," Miroku called after him. "It's Inuyasha, isn't it? You want him..." And the rest was choked off as Sesshomaru grabbed him tightly by the throat and threw him against a tree. Right, he thought to
himself. So I need to learn when to shut up...
"What do you know about it?" Sesshomaru hissed.
"He... talked to me..." Miroku gasped out. "He was... confused." Black spots were dancing in front of his eyes when Sesshomaru released him with a suddenness that had him staggering back a few steps.
"What did he say?"
Miroku blinked. Yes, it was Sesshomaru who had whispered those words, standing, head lowered, hair falling around his face, shrouding it. "He told me what happened to both of you."
Sesshomaru's eyes turned bright red as he bared all of his fangs and looked like he was about to bite Miroku's head clean off. Will I never learn to keep my mouth shut? Miroku wondered absently, sure that by the time this conversation was over he would have pushed the demon lord past his limit and completely overrun his uncharacteristic restraint. But the monk forged ahead, regardless.
For some reason, he felt that this was something that needed to be done.
"He told me about last night." Miroku paused, trying to read Sesshomaru's face. "He wanted my advice."
Sesshomaru's lip curled in self-derision. "Advice? Since when does Inuyasha require advice on how to remove a hated annoyance from his life?"
"I don't hate you."
Miroku's head snapped up and his eyes flew open wide at the sound of a third voice joining the conversation. "Inuyasha," he breathed, glancing at the half breed but surreptitiously returning his gaze to Sesshomaru. The demon looked just as shocked as Miroku at seeing Inuyasha, which was strange considering he should have smelled him coming...
Inuyasha's eyes were dark and his expression intense as he regarded Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru tried to regain some of his composure, but as Inuyasha stepped toward him, he retreated a step. "What's wrong with you?" Inuyasha asked. "You didn't hear me coming, didn't smell me, and you retreat like you did last night." With a sudden blaze in his eyes he pressed an attack and Sesshomaru's hand slipped when he tried to block, sending him sprawling on the ground with Inuyasha crouched over him. "What's wrong with you?" Inuyasha repeated, pushing off of
his brother in disgust. Sesshomaru stayed where he was, eyes closed, and made no answer.
Coming over to Miroku, Inuyasha touched his shoulder. "I'm leaving with him," he said, and Miroku saw Sesshomaru's eyes open in surprise. "I already told Kagome."
Miroku nodded, and, recognizing a dismissal when he heard one, gathered his still empty basket and departed the clearing as quickly as he could without seeming to rush.
Once a safe distance away, he stopped, wondering if he should have stayed a moment and eavesdropped until he was sure the pair weren't going to kill each other... And he immediately dismissed the notion.
Inuyasha could take care of himself, and anyway Sesshomaru hadn't looked like he was entirely well. And, most especially, he did not want to be anywhere around if they decided to... you know. Miroku blushed, uncharacteristically. This was most unsettling. There was only one cure he could see. He was going to have to observe naked women bathing, that was all there was to it. He nodded with the resolute pragmatism born of experience and set off on his chosen course toward the lake, from which direction he could hear Sango's unrestrained laughter echoing through the trees.
--
Sesshomaru stared up at Inuyasha. After Miroku left, Inuyasha came and knelt beside Sesshomaru, peering at him intently. "What is wrong with you?" he asked again, softer this time. He reached out a hand and brushed Sesshomaru's bangs away from his forehead. Sesshomaru flinched at the touch and glared darkly at his brother.
Inuyasha smirked and, standing, offered his brother a hand up. Sesshomaru ignored the hand and rose by himself. He glanced over at Inuyasha to see the half breed's smirk twitch into a real smile.
Inuyasha cocked his head appraisingly at Sesshomaru, then turned and led the way into the forest. Sesshomaru bared his teeth in a silent snarl, but followed.
Inuyasha lead his brother to a tree, deep in the forest, with leaves that hung heavy and green and branches that were huge and broad. Leaping up onto a large branch, Inuyasha settled back against the trunk of the tree and held out a hand to Sesshomaru. The demon ignored the hand again, but he jumped up to stand on the branch as well, glancing questioningly at Inuyasha. The half breed simply sat there, holding out his hand, and Sesshomaru went toward him slowly. When he was closer, Inuyasha rose and, taking his hand, pulled his brother down into his embrace.
Sesshomaru sighed softly, his head pillowed against Inuyasha's shoulder. His brother was warm, arms wrapped around him, and he smelled good... Sesshomaru turned his head, so his face was against Inuyasha's neck, breathing gently, and if his lips pressed against that skin it was something he would never confess to later. He closed his eyes and, for the first time in months, slept deeply.
His brother in his arms, Inuyasha sat and watched the passing afternoon sun cast dappled shadows through the wind teased leaves of the tree. Birds called to each other quietly or paused to look at
the strange pair resting on the branch, but quickly moved on to go about the business of gathering food.
