3. A Whole New World
The journey through the time portal was--as always--uneventful, although there was a certain amount of tension in the travelers because of the nature of this particular trip. As usual, Kagome’s mother was cordial, even friendly, although she hadn’t originally been happy to learn that her daughter was going to be living her entire life in a place so far beyond her reach.
That had been one of the motivations for the hanyou’s decision to use the Shikon no Tama to keep the portal open for their respective families and friends. Even so, the two were the only ones who used it on a regular basis: the others from the Sengoku Jidai found the twenty-first century too noisy and confusing to tolerate for long, and the human family from that time well understood the dangers in an unexpected journey into the youkai-infested past.
Even so, she had been somewhat surprised to see the two arrive together. Kagome had been determined to keep the nature of her almost constant trips here from her mate, although the older woman had immediately understood that the effort would be utterly futile. She had, in fact, urged her to explain it to him, but had been overruled in no uncertain terms.
She clearly remembered when he had followed her daughter through the well after her last visit, when he had questioned her extensively about the testing that his mate had been undergoing without his knowledge. He had explained that he would rather they never had a family at all than that she be put through any more misery because of it, and the older woman had broken down and wept in his arms for over an hour--in the years since her own husband had died she had nearly forgotten what such unwavering devotion to another’s happiness looked like.
Although he had agreed to keep the secret, she had half expected that he would, at some point, confront his mate about her activities. She had often seen the look on the hanyou’s face when she cried--even about something relatively insignificant like a minor argument--and knew that he would do anything he possibly could to prevent it from happening.
Still, her daughter was determined--although she usually called it “stubborn”--and would not willingly inform the man with whom she shared her life about this perceived failure within herself, or the implied failure in him.
They sat around the table for a time drinking tea and catching up on each other’s news. Souta was rapidly becoming the star player on his school’s soccer team, much to his delight. Although his success had helped to make him more self-confident, he would probably never develop the monstrous ego of most athletes.
Kagome spoke briefly about Miroku, Sango, and Shippou, all of whom her mother had met on a few occasions. Although Shippou had little interest in learning, he had attended her lessons long enough to learn at least a little basic mathematics. Not too surprisingly, he seemed to have a natural talent as an artist. If she remembered, she would try to pick up some art supplies before going home. She spoke briefly about some of her students in the village. Although most of them would never continue their schooling past the point of learning to read and write and do a little simple math, there were a few that showed real promise in academics. Of course, the fact that she maintained a library that anyone in the community could use for information on making things, or growing and preserving food, to healing, made advanced education largely unnecessary.
Still, it was a source of undeniable pride to her that her little village probably had the highest literacy rate in the entire country.
Her expression sobered suddenly as she spoke of the child they had found in the forest the previous day. She still trembled with indignation at what had been done to him. “Someday,” she said, smiling softly, “We’ll bring him here so he can meet you. Even though he’s started to heal, he was very badly hurt, but I think that that’s the least of the damage--he’s scared half to death of anybody human. I hope we can get him to stay with us: I’d really like to have somebody for Shippou to play with. I mean, he loves the kids in the village, but he’s pretty different from them physically--it would be good to have somebody around who can stretch him a little, if you know what I mean.”
The older woman stood, glancing meaningfully at the clock. “Well,” she said, “You two have to be going, and so do I. I’ll be packing you some extra ramen and instant meals--it looks like you’ll be taking to the road again soon.”
The hanyou cracked a crooked grin. “It shows, ne?”
“Please! In spite of all your grumbling, you’ve always gone out of your way to help people in trouble. Now, there’s a threat to a small, precious group with whom you have a definite kinship. There’s no way on earth you’re going to let this alone until you’ve resolved it.”
His mate elbowed him lightly in the ribs. “I told you--that tough guy act never fooled anybody.”
“Feh!”
*
The clinic was relatively close to the shrine grounds, so they decided to walk, as it was a particularly pleasant March day. Even though he was still--after all these years--somewhat uncomfortable in the clothing from her era, he was almost always in a good mood at this time of year. Slipping an arm around her waist, he dropped his head so that he could speak directly into her ear. “You know what’s coming, love, don’t you?”
She shivered in anticipation, blushing furiously. “I can hardly wait.” Since early summer was the natural mating season for inuyoukai, the surging hormones in her mate guaranteed a blissful two weeks or so of making love at every possible opportunity. If only….
The clinic was located in a comfortable, traditional-style building only a dozen or so blocks from the shrine. With the confidence of long practice, Kagome stepped up to the receptionist’s desk. “I have an appointment with Dr. Shogai.” At the appraising look directed at the tall figure behind her, she added, “We’re together.”
While they waited in the doctor’s office, she turned again to her mate. “Try to be nice,” she said. “It took me a long time to find a doctor I could be comfortable with, and I’m not sure I care to go through the search again.”
The door opened, and the hanyou broke out in a huge grin. No wonder she had felt so
comfortable around this doctor! He pulled off his hat, freeing his sensitive ears from their suffocating confinement, and stuck out his hand in a gesture he had learned from his new family in this time. “You probably won’t remember me, but--”
The woman stood there with her mouth open. Her eyes darted from one to the other, then she grinned broadly. “Well, that explains why you two are here. No wonder you’re having problems.” She turned to the young woman sitting in the chair next to her massive desk.
Suddenly, it was as if the years had fallen away. Kagome looked at the physician and saw the shy little hanyou girl who had been tormented by both the humans in her mother’s village and her own youkai grandfather because of her ability to erect powerful barriers. How could she have been so stupid! The moonlight-colored hair and water-clear eyes should have been a dead giveaway--and then there was the name on the door: Shogai Shiori. “Shiori?!?” she squeaked.
“I could never forget you two--you showed me that it was possible for a creature like me to actually be loved. Now,” she said, bringing the two over to the large sofa on the opposite side of the room, “We can really begin to make some progress.”
Kagome was instantly alert. “There was something in my test results?”
“Nothing at all. That will help a lot, believe me. The good news is, now that I’ve seen you both, I know exactly how we can proceed. The bad news is that it could take several years before we’re successful.” She glanced out to the window at a small park across the street. “It’s a good thing you came to see me now--this is the best possible time to start collecting…materials.” The smirk she directed at the hanyou made him squirm in the comfortable seat.
After she sent him off to a small room nearby with detailed instructions about the exact kind of “materials” she needed to collect, she called to the receptionist and asked for tea to be brought into the office. “This is going to take some time,” she said, telling the older woman to cancel the rest of her appointments for the day.
Over the next forty minutes, Kagome learned more than she had ever expected to know about hanyou biochemistry and reproductive physiology. One thing she had never realized was that hanyou males had a fertility cycle much like that of human women--it peaked during the normal mating season for their particular kind of youkai, then dropped off to nearly nothing for the rest of the year. Apparently, this was an adaptation that occurred in those species that tended to mate for life to prevent them from entering their heat cycles with a pregnant mate and endangering all of their lives. As hybrids, many kinds of hanyou were sterile, although most of the more “advanced” mammalian types tended to be fertile through at least a part of their cycles despite chronically low sperm counts and poor motility.
Kagome shook her head. “If that’s the case, why can hanyous mate any time, and not just during their heat cycles?”
The other woman laughed softly. “That probably comes from their human sides. In humans, it seems to be an adaptation to build commitment between mates so that they both stay around during the child’s long period of relative helplessness.” She shook her head. “How long have you two been trying?”
“About five years now. I mean, we have an adopted son--I don’t know if you remember the fox youkai kit who was with us when we met the first time--and we just took in another foster son who I hope will stay with us. He’s an inuhanyou who somehow managed to escape from slavers. As soon as we go back hime we’re going to start looking for them.”
“But you want to bear a child for your mate. There’s nothing at all wrong with that, although I bet you’re hearing that going to all these extreme measures to do so is unnatural and a waste of time and money.”
She looked down at the hands in her lap. “Most of the people I know understand, but there are a few….”
“First of all,” the physician said, “Don’t worry about the expense. I’ve been very successful, and this sort of case interests me--I take these on as more of a public service than anything else. Without the techniques I’m trying to develop, whole strains of youkai blood will die out.”
It was a decidedly red-faced hanyou who joined the two women a short time later. Although what he had just done was not entirely unfamiliar to him, he had taken no pleasure in it--this was simply something he had been told was necessary if they were ever to have pups of their own. It had been surprisingly difficult, as he had lacked the incentive of the woman he desired more than life itself. He was not unsophisticated--he understood the purpose of the magazines and videos in the tiny room--but the thought of utilizing those resources made him uncomfortable if not actually ill.
He sat in silence at the end of the sofa, fully aware that both of the women knew exactly what he had just done, listening to the explanations of exactly what kind of measures might be required for them to conceive and bear a pup. The three had lapsed into a companionable silence over their tea when a soft tap at the door signaled the presence of one of the lab technicians working on the premises. She opened the door just as the hanyou stuffed the hat back on his head, concealing the incriminating ears. With an appreciative look at the man sitting in the office, she dropped a folder on the desk before retreating back to wherever she had come from.
The physician read over the folder carefully, then set it aside before flashing a big smile at the couple facing her. “Well,” she said, “I have some genuinely good news. As I expected, the sample indicated a low sperm count and almost nonexistent motility. However, I do expect that the sperm counts will be going up dramatically over the next few months. I don’t doubt that we will be able to help you to have the child you want so badly.” She shook her head slowly. “Unfortunately, I’m going to have to ask you to give up your heat cycles this year.”
The human woman turned her eyes to her mate, gripping his hand in her own. He looked equally distressed, but nodded briskly. He had been prepared to make sacrifices for the sake of their future family, but had never expected that this would be asked of them. He didn’t look at all happy. “What do we have to do?”
“We’re going to have to approach this problem from two different directions at once. I’m going to ask you not to mate at all during your heat cycle--instead, we have to collect as much sperm as possible to create an especially dense solution. At the same time, we’re going to be administering hormone injections to your mate so that she will produce many more eggs than
usual. Once a month we’ll be able to harvest the eggs and combine them with the stored sperm. With any luck at all, we’ll get some viable embryos that we can then implant. From there on, it should be a normal pregnancy.” Her clinical manner went a long way toward easing the other hanyou’s jitters.
He paled suddenly. “Exactly how are you going to collect this sperm?”
She nodded slowly. “It was especially difficult, wasn’t it? That’s often the case with youkai and hanyous who mate for life. If you can be sure of your self-control, we can allow you to be together while you make the donation. That should provide you with adequate stimulation to make the process easier.”
He agreed silently that his mate’s presence would make things easier, but he had grave doubts about his ability to keep his hands to himself during the procedure. “We’ve talked about this--we’ll do whatever it takes to get this done.”
The physician didn’t for a second doubt that they would do so.
