Kagome turned down the long stretch of road the next day. Her mind still dwelling on the man from yesterday. Sango sat in the passenger seat just as silent and sullen. All night they had discussed the possibilities, neither liked the outcome. They had no idea who he'd been but knew enough to just let it pass. The man made sure they saw him, he wanted them to know he was there. But who was he and why the hate towards them? Sango swore that for a minute she was staring into Naraku's eyes. Which confused them, why now? They'd been home for over a year and he'd been dead for over five centuries. Their futures might not have looked all too exciting before now but it had looked safe.
Souta was unaware of what had transpired, summed it all up to some creepy guy. They were content to let him believe that. Kagome wasn't about to tell him that danger could be headed their way at full speed. He was too young to bring into the problems of being hunted. If this man wanted trouble, they'd be ready for him. Kagome glanced down at her bow laying casually in the back seat. Sango had refused to leave her sword and Hiraikotsu at home. Both weapons were in the car, the sword under the seat and the large boomerrang in the trunk. It had barely fit, the spare tire now sat against the shed. They better not get a flat tire anytime soon.
They were headed towards the middle school. Kagome had promised to deliver some papers to Mr. Takenaka. Souta had a bit of trouble in some of his classes so next year he was to take some special courses. Her mother had forgotten to send them off before heading out of town. Kagome didn't mind though, she liked her old principle. He was alot nicer than most of the other teachers. The man had been friends with her family for years and even attended college with her father. He'd also been there for her since her return from the Fuedal Era. He'd been told of all her absences and pulled a few strings so she could still graduate.
Kagome put the car in park and frowned. From out her windshield she was sure she saw smoke coming from one of the windows. No one should be at the school except a few teachers and Mr. Takenaka. "Something is on fire. Stay here Souta!" She threw open the car door without waiting to see if her brother listened. A few kids were standing in front of the school yard watching as flames burst out the upper window. "Get out of the way."
Sango was quick on her heels. She prayed that no one was in there. She heard yelling from behind them and felt a couple of strong youkai aura's. "Kagome we aren't alone." The girl paid her no attention as she pushed open the door leading into the building. Sango jumped over the fallen woman laying casually in the hallway. It only took a brief second to see that she was dead. No one's head was meant to turn in that angle.
"Mr. Takenaka!" Kagome felt pain seeing the dead teacher in the hall. Someone had attacked the school. Something told her to head straight to the room where the fire was located. Fear caused her feet to quicken, the sound of her heart pounding in her ears. She wasn't worried about being attacked. Sango was right behind her, paying attention to every detail. She could feel the heat before she hit the room.
The fire was un-natural, the flames were being contained within the one room. Without thinking she grabbed ahold of the knob to find it cool to the touch. It should have been scolding hot from the intense heat radiating through the door. Shielding herself quickly she shoved the door open. "Mr. Takenaka?" The whole room was in order, as if class had just been dismissed. Except in the middle of the room, the desks had been rearranged to surround something. Kagome screamed realizing it was a body and only it was burning.
Sango grabbed Kagome before the girl could rush forward. "You can't help him now, don't." Something wasn't right here, magic was at work. The flames were immense but nothing else was catching fire. Everything else surrounding the body was made out of wood, easily flamable. Someone was keeping the flames concentrated on just burning the body. "Kagome look!"
Kagome felt her knees go weak seeing what had caused the taijiya to begin shaking. A message had been painted in what looked to be blood on the wall. The reason the fire had been contained is they wanted the message read. It made her heart dip and her soul to plummet. It rang through her mind word by sinister word. 'From the ashes I have arisen once again. Each pain that I have endured so will those that you hold dear.' Below the writing was a drawing, that of the spider.
"A spider!" Kagome felt her knees begin to buckle beneath her. It couldn't be him, not now. Someone was playing a horrible joke, it was awful. Strong arms wrapped around her back pulling her against a firm chest. Tears began to stream down her face, knowing who lay there smoking. Whomever had attacked the school had killed the few teachers still working and had torched the principle. Kagome felt a hand on her neck, trying to console her. There was nothing anyone could say to make it better. Someone had just been killed because of her.
"Get them out of here Hojo. They don't need to see this right now." Yusuke clenched his fist hard enough to draw blood. Kurama was already trying to put out the flames, with little success. They'd been on their way after feeling a disturbance. They'd been too slow, Mr. Takenaka was dead. Why would Sensui attack the school? It was true that Mr. Takenaka had been the one person close enough that he thought of him as a father figure. Is that why he'd been killed? The one man that had believed in him was gone. Sensui would pay for it with his life. Human or not the man had to die.
Kagome closed her eyes not wanting to look at the corpse. Why this way? Was Naraku trying to tell them something. It had to be him they'd seen yesterday. Why hadn't he attacked them then? 'Cause this is Naraku! He enjoys playing little mind games and hurting others. He'll go after everyone I love.' Kagome shoved away from the person holding her. "Souta!"
Sango made it out of the room before the miko. If he was going after those close to Kagome then they had just left Souta alone in the car. She was out of breath by the time she made it to the parking lot. A sigh of relief came seeing the young boy leaning against the car talking to a few other kids. He was safe, for now. Kagome caught up with her in seconds, feeling the same relief. "What now? There is nothing we can do for him. We have ourselves and your family to consider Kagome."
Yusuke called Koenma on the intercom after Kurama managed to put the fire out. They weren't going to sleep until they found Sensui. He couldn't be located for some reason. Every team was on the look-out for the man, even the ferry girls. He eyed the strange message on the wall. It was a warning of some kind but what was up with the spider? He reported what was seen to the Reikai prince and waited for any clue. "What does it mean?"
"I'm not sure Yusuke. As far as I know Sensui didn't have that kind of mark. Maybe it's something new, I'll have to look into it. I would normally ask someone close to Sensui but there is no one. Have no doubt that he will strike again until he is caught and brought to justice. I got an idea, have everyone meet me at Kurama's in four hours."
"Right." Yusuke shut the communicator then turned back to his old principle. The man had been innocent, he didn't deserve to die like this. He wasn't sure yet how many others had been killed. What would drive Sensui to strike out in this manner? He'd never done it before but had others do it for him. Picking people off just wasn't his style.
"Look Yusuke," Kurama called him over to the dead man. He'd seen enough magic in his years as Youko to recognize it. This man had been tortured to death. Something had been keeping him alive while he burned to death. "See here how the skin is burned, almost enough where it's turned tough but not to ash. Those flames were hot enough that there should be nothing left except maybe bone. Only the skin was burned, it's hard to explain. If we were to do an autopsy, we'd find all the muscles intact along with the organs. The fire was kept at the surface of the body. Yet it was hot enough to cause an immense amount of pain and suffering. I'm willing to bet he died of a heartattack. No one could endure this kind of torture for long. Actually most people die from smoke inhilation before they die from the flames. Something tells me we'd find his lungs free of any smoke as well. Yusuke, someone deliberately wanted him to die from the pain."
"Hojo went down to make sure the girls that found him were okay." Kuwabara put a hand on Yusuke's shoulder. They were both angry over this. It just wasn't right for someone to be tortured. Whatever had gotten into Sensui was causing the man to be more evil than before. The man was more disturbed than they'd originally thought. He wouldn't get away with it, he'd see to it personally. He might not be as tough as the others but he wouldn't stand by and let this happen.
Kagome watched the cops go inside the school, then the news vans pulled up. Reporters rushed inside to get the scoop. She knew she had to talk to the local police they'd wanted her statement. All she was able to tell them was that she'd been on her way to deliver papers and had run up upon seeing the smoke. The lies flowed easily from her lips, she couldn't tell them what she knew. An enemy from her past was back among them. Sango did most of the talking for them being the calmer one. Both were shaken from the ordeal. It wasn't simply the death but knowing what was to come.
Soon the storm would blow in, the battle anew. If Naraku thought she was going to cower in fear he was wrong, dead wrong. She wouldn't allow him to touch her family. Could her and Sango kill them on their own? It had taken all of them in the past. Inuyasha had played a major role in killing Naraku. Inuyasha was dead now, so was Kikyou, Kouga, Miroku and even Shippou. There was no one else to help them. Except him. What were the chances of him still being alive in this era?
Kaname Hagari almost frowned when the former spirit detective walked in the door. Fate was ironic at times, now was one of them. For the last two years he'd lived a peaceful life working at a shipping company just outside of town. No one had bothered him, or hunted him down. Secretly he'd kept in touch with his sister but had left all other traces of his former life behind. Was he still wanted for his involvement with Sensui, he never knew. Ofcourse he'd been nothing but a pawn. He'd known exactly what he'd been doing the whole time. He hated most humans, they were disgusting. Instead of mingling he did what was needed to survive, never getting close to others. Why bother, they would all die someday.
Koenma had sought him out only an hour ago along with a few others. Sensui was back from the dead causing chaos. He wasn't surprised at all, Shinobu had been extremely powerful. They couldn't figure out what the man's goals were so it was hard to track him down. Kaname wasn't sure what he could do to help or even if he wanted to. A full pardon with the Reikai had been promised for his assistance. It meant he could go home and visit his sister without worry of being arrested by some cocky spirit detective.
Kamiya also was seated on the couch, casually enjoying the news. Mitarai was seated next to the doctor nervously chewing on his nails. Amanuma was lucky, the boy being out of the country on a trip with his parents. For the last hour they'd caught up on each other's lives, making small talk. Kamiya, also known as the Doctor, had opened up a clinic called Miracle Hands. He'd turned good to heal those in need. Mitarai, also known as Seaman, had just graduated high school. Everyone had made something of thier lives except him. Not that it bothered him much, he was Sniper. He'd always be a loner, a rogue.
"What the hell are they doing here?" Yusuke pointed at the two sitting on the couch. What could Koenma be thinking bring those two among them? He nodded towards Mitarai whom they had befriended during the fight. It came to mind that they might be in danger also. As far as he knew Sniper hadn't actually killed anyone but had tried to use him for target practice. They had still been helping Sensui bring an end to the Ningenkai.
"Settle down Yusuke, I brought them here for a good reason. Their lives will be in danger also. Plus, the doctor has redeemed himself as far as my father is concerned. I have also offered Sniper a full pardon if he assists us in any way he can. If they are wiling to repent then they deserve the chance." Koenma knew this was going to be a hard group to work with. What choice did he have but to use what resources he had? Sensui was running wild and couldn't be found. Once again the man was playing with them. He'd see that it was stopped before another innocent person died. "This is the time to put the past behind us and join forces. We have no idea what Sensui is capable of now."
"Koenma is right, we have to stop this." Mitarai leaned forward feeling the tension in the air. He knew Yusuke still held a grudge against his former partners. Not that he could blame the man, both had tried to kill Yusuke. He believed what Kurama had once told him, 'It is never too late to reform one's ways.' The doctor seemed to have done so and he wasn't too sure about Sniper. Everyone deserved a second chance in life, even these two. Sensui on the other hand was being given another chance to cause destruction. Kuwabara had shown him that not everyone was the same. There was some good in the world, they had to protect it. "So how can we help?"
"First, take a look at this picture. It was taken at the attack of the middle school earlier today. It greatly resembles that of a spider but we have no idea of it's meaning. We were hoping you would. We don't believe he carried such a mark. So do you know what meaning it would represent to him?" Koenma handed them each a shot of the drawing and the written message.
"No, I've never seen anything like it before. The only one that was close to Sensui was Itsuki but you said he was dead. I'm not even sure which personality would have spoken of such a thing. Do you know which personality is in control?" Mitarai looked over the picture once more, reading the message outloud. " 'From the ashes I have arisen once again.' That doesn't make any sense. Once again implies that he has done so before but Sensui died for the first time when Yusuke killed him."
"You are correct and we aren't sure who is controling him. When he died Itsuki said that Sensui had finally been able to defeat all those other personalities. Which implies at the point of death the only one left was that of the true Shinobu Sensui." Kurama didn't think this would get them anywhere. "It might be the person behind his resurrection leaving the sign. We need to find out who brought him back first."
"You're wrong, it's his mark." Sniper wasn't sure about the risen comment but he recognized the mark. "I don't know what that comment means but I've seen that mark before. Not long after Sensui recruited me and took me to the cave, I happened upon him and Itsuki one night. I'd located the Doc here and was going to report it to him. I heard talking in the chamber where those two stayed. Itsuki was asking him why he bothered trying to remove it, it always came back. Sensui heard me standing near the entrance and bid me to enter, so I did. What I saw was a long gash running across his chest, to go along with all the other scars. I caught sight of a tiny mark no bigger than a dime, that of a spider. The details weren't that refined but it's shape was apparent. As I reported my find, I watched him dig at his chest until the mark was almost cut from his flesh."
"What kind of birthmark keeps coming back? I mean I had this wart one time and I cut it off my hand and it didn't come back. Shouldn't it have stayed gone the first time?" Kuwabara remembered seeing the man's torn up chest and back during his fight with Urameshi. If he remembered correctly Sensui had called it some kind of training. What a sick way to get rid of a blemish.
"So we can assume that it is Sensui in control. Now to find out what the mark means or what it means to him." Koenma took out his communicator to page Hojo. Now that they had some new information it was time to get to work. They'd split up in teams in the morning to search for the man. As soon as the team was ready to head out, he'd be heading back to the Reikai. He had a hunch his father would know what the spider mark meant.
