He waited, perched on the roof just opposite the theatre. The city sounds and scent providing ample cover for him. No doubt the council had met, and he held no illusions that his activities had gone unnoted. He thought back once more to the young candidate, how fast she had run. Never fast enough. How her heart had thundered behind her ribs, like a frightened bird beating it’s wings against the cage. Her blue eyes wide with fright as he’d appeared from the shadows. She’d recognized him, thought him an ally and he’d left her to drown in her own blood for it. Who would have known that she would hold on long enough to be discovered? Stubborn wench. No matter though, detection was inevitable and accepted. He had been biding his time for so long that patience was an old friend, a balm to soothe the wounds of pride. He was more cautious now, more certain of his favor with key demons, he had no desire to be sealed again as punishment. As if the entire Inquisition could be traced to him personally. But it could and he knew that, cared little for the countless humans and youkai that had perished in the righteous fires of overzealous believers. His green eyes narrowed on the theatre. Even from this distance, he felt them. Sesshoumaru and Youko. Their power swirling within the flashes of other youki. Unmistakeable…hated. “Lord Delno”, a soft voice behind him chimed and he beckoned the speaker forward, “What is it?” he asked. The rebel priestess smiled up at him, “How goes the planning of our war?”. Her tone was sugary sweet, dripping with cady coated malice. Delno smirked, bloodthirsty female. She amused him. Ana, the most corrupt priestess he’d ever encountered and he’d encountered more than a few in his long years. She longed for the days of open battle between miko and youkai. Killing for the sake of killing, of course she favored youkai in many ways. Bedsport was one of those, and he was currently reaping the rewards of it. “It goes well enough; the dog and that wretched fox will fall soon enough from favor. Once they fail to protect that which the Alliance holds valuable” he replied. Lilia looked around, trying to locate her companion, Esbet had just been here. She gathered the voluminous folds of her skirt in her small hands and headed in the opposite direction. “Where is she?” she muttered. Her long skeins of jet black hair caught up in some elaborate style that made her head ache. Oh but to be pretty for one night a year, she inwardly mused. She moved through the throngs of people, unaware of the attention she received. The appreciative eyes that followed her movements, the murmurs that lifted to youkai ears. Whispers unheard by humans. This one was different from her fellows. Lilian muttered curses under her breath, promising herself that she’d deliver a stern lecture when she found her wayward friend. Her violet eyes scanning for the bright pink tulle of her friend’s ball gown, oblivious to the reaction of those around her. This was her first year at the ball, she’d wanted to come for so long but time had never been in her favor. Now, she was determined to find her best friend and enjoy herself. This had been called the party of the year; no way was she blowing it. No way. She inhaled shallow breaths through her mouth. So many people, so many sounds, and scents. Usually, she could detect her friend’s perfume and follow it to her, like she did most days in their office. Not here. It was too much and her head was growing tight with the clashing smells. There just ahead, a flash of brilliant pink! She hiked up her silver gown and dashed after it. “Esbet! Esbet!” she called out and the vision in pink paused and turned. Her blond curls bobbing as she danced around happily, “Lilian! Can you believe this place?” she gushed. Lilian let her dress fall to drape so perfectly around her, “Yeah just great” she replied, “Did I ever tell you how much I hate pantyhose?” Esbet laughed aloud and patted her arm, “But you dress up so nicely Lil. It’s a wonder you don’t do it more often. Might get a date”. Lilian pulled up the bodice of her gown and grunted, “Yeah, because twenty pounds of clothing and heels is my idea of fun.. and men are highly overrated”. Just then a small group of people approached them, “Excuse me” one woman said, “But your dresses are beautiful. Would you mind if we took a picture of you?”. Lilian blinked, but Esbet threw her arm around her, donned her mask and posed, “Sure!”. So it began, one picture turned into two turned into too many to count. The resulting explosion of flashes dazed her and Lilian pressed her fingers to her eyes, trying to dispel the myriad of dancing lights. Amid the following ‘thank yous’ she smiled warmly and tried to focus. Esbet was thrilled, “They like our costumes!” she trilled. Lilian smoothed a hand over her satin gown, “Yes, they are lovely” she murmured. A moment later, Esbet was dragging her to the large glass doors leading to the main floor and she followed along, clutching her skirt as she went. The interior of that room was much darker than here and there seemed to be no flashes whatsoever. That was good wasn’t it? There was nothing in this place that interested him. He’d watched Youko vanish into a dark corner with a familiar bat demon. No doubt having quite an enjoyable time indeed. Sesshoumaru shifted and looked out over the sea of beings before him. He felt the power, but had yet to find the source. He waited, feeling it move closer at a crawling pace. “Found anything exciting yet?” Youko asked, appearing beside him. Not a hair was out of place on the stoic fox. Sesshoumaru grunted, “Finished so soon? No, I’ve not found her yet, and nothing about this place interests me in the least” he replied, “Wasted effort all of it”. Youko’s eyes swept over the entrance, there at the top of the stair, framed by light was, in short, a vision. Dark hair clashing with ivory flesh, draped in a gown of moonlight silk. And beneath it all, the current of power that moved over her small form. “Nothing at all?” he asked lightly, his face turning to take in the tableau fully. Sesshoumaru followed his companion’s eyes and stiffened fractionally, almost imperceptibly. Almost. Like a statue, poised, the elegant column of her throat elongated as she sought to see over the crowd, this was the source. Like a perfect sketch in ink, impossibly lovely and all too human. Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed as he contemplated her. This was the special one? This frail looking female? Power danced around her, but at low levels and she was likely unaware of them, therefore they were beyond her control. That meant that not only was she in danger, but she was a danger in herself. A shuffling to the left of her position drew his attention and he watched as a shadow wraith separated himself from the crowd, his features hidden behind his mask. He spoke to her and her features betrayed some surprise at being met with a stranger. All too soon, however, he took her hand and led her into the melee that was the dance floor. “Well that doesn’t look good” Youko offered, quietly delighting in seeing the dog tense. “I’ll see to it”. Sesshoumaru growled, “Do not draw attention to her” he commanded. Youko smirked, “You speak as if I were not a professional Sesshoumaru. I am merely going to lead her companion to a better vantage point” he replied, nodding towards the lone female looking around in confusion.. Sesshoumaru’s gleaming golden eyes fell on the pink puff of a girl looking a bit lost on the stair and nearly groaned. After this dance, she’d trail them all night. “Wonderful Youko” he muttered, seeing his friend’s hand lift into the air and wave amiably. Lilian wasn’t sure that her companion at the moment wasn’t good looking, but he was charming. Always saying the right thing, keeping his hand at her waist gentle. All of it was perfectly acceptable and all of it put her on edge. She should never have agreed to dance with him. She was perfectly happy people watching, really. Still, he was tall, with long dark hair that seemed much too nice to be a wig and he seemed to embrace the ‘court of the night’ theme wholeheartedly. With his pale flesh that was visible to her and his eyes a deep blue, he was likely quite attractive indeed. When he smiled, she caught a glimpse of pointed fangs within his mouth. Some people just went all out. Then Esbet glided into view in the arms of a very tall fellow with long silver hair and adorable pointed ears atop his head. Swathed in white silk, he was a pale vision and she knew that Esbet would coo about him for days to come. As though reading her thoughts, the silver wonder locked eyes with her and gave a smile that could charm anyone. Her own partner drew her some distance off, twirling her in delicate circles but no matter how artful his movements, the silver haired man was never far off. Somehow that thought eased her, knowing that he was not far and so Esbet remained close. She smiled over some witty comment that her partner made and he swung her into the final turn. The waltz ended and she began to bow out, seeking some excuse, any excuse but her partner was disinclined to allow it. “Another dance lady” he urged. She shook her head, offered a smile, pointed at her feet “No thank you, I really need something to drink and a little rest. Shoes”. It had sounded brilliant in her mind but the next thing she knew, she was being whisked along to the bar and then to a settee in the corner. Not at all where she wanted to be. He slid onto the settee beside her and draped his arm over the back, drawing closer to her. “So tell me beauty, what is your name?” he asked with a smile. She flushed slightly and swallowed her drink, was this guy for real? “Erm, Lilian” she replied, “You?”. He smiled again, “I am called Raven” he replied warmly. Her dark brow arched behind her mask, typical. “Nice name. So you come here every year I take it?”. He nodded and pinned her with a darkening gaze, lifting her hand towards his lips, “But you Lady Lilian” he purred, “You do not”. She blanched, yup, big sign on her head that shrieked newbie she supposed. “Yes well, first year. I suppose I’ll be more into it next year” she confided looking at some woman passing by in a bright yellow gown with enormous butterfly wings on her back. “I might even try something more adventurous like that”. He clucked his tongue and shook his head, “You should come only as you are, you are perfectly delicious in any attire I am sure” he chided. Lilian noticed that once again the distance between them had closed rapidly. “I …should go and find my friend” she blurted out, rising to her feet. Raven locked his long fingers around her wrist, intent on holding her in place until he was certain she was the one. Delno would want her if that was the case and he wasn’t about to lose the reward for finding her. He smiled up at her shocked expression. She snapped her hand free of his grasp with a speed that was surprising for a human. “I said that I am going to find my friend, thank you for the dance” she told him, her tone icy and brooked no argument. He locked eyes with her and she noted the odd gleaming sheen of them in this half light. “See you round” she muttered and turned to leave. Youko watched her display and bit back a smirk, whirling her companion closer to her. He stepped back into the shadows, cursing his nearly seven foot height when the pink pouf girl frantically searched for him. “There you are Lilian!” she cried, seeing her friend, “Did you see him? God wasn’t he to die for? How about yours?” Lilian glanced over her shoulder to find Raven gone, “Oh yeah, one to go homicidal on…. Er for” she replied. Esbet, never the brightest crayon in the box giggled and pulled her along in hot pursuit of the one she deemed the most drop dead gorgeous man in existence. “You know Esbet” Lilian said, “He is in costume. He is probably just some really tall geek who works in some accounting office. If he was that good looking I doubt he’d be single…or STD free for that matter. Did you even get his name?”. Esbet blushed, “Well no… I was …busy” she defended. Lilian wrapped her arm around her, “Doing what, drooling over him?” she asked. Esbet laughed and nodded, “Yeah actually I was” she admitted. They shared a laugh, content to let the big fish slip through the cracks this one time. Fantasy after all, was so much better than reality. Sesshoumaru stalked the upper levels of the theatre, where fewer people gathered. The scent of desire clouded the air and just below it, the reason he had come here. Blood. Human blood. Golden eyes moving with swift efficiency over the corners and alcoves methodically. In the corner, behind the heavy drapes, a lizard demon held a human female in his grasp. Her heartbeat was uneven, her flesh far too pale. He was taking too much from her. If he stopped now, she would survive and feel only sick and weakened for a few days. “Ganzu” the lord called out. The other pulled from the woman, letting her fall to the floor in a graceless heap. “Sesshoumaru-sama” he said, wiping blood from his lips. Golden eyes narrowed, “You know the law” he growled. Ganzu motioned to the woman, “She lives”. Sesshoumaru drew closer to him, “And had I not come, she’d not be leaving this theatre tonight” he pointed out. Ganzu dropped to his knees and pressed his forehead to the floor at Sesshoumaru’s feet. “Forgive me Sesshoumaru-sama, I did not mean to take so much. It was not my intention to break the law” he stammered. The dog lord watched him for long minutes, “Leave Ganzu” he commanded, “I am not feeling particularly magnanimous tonight. Any further infractions will be met with death”. The lizard was up and gone a moment later. Sesshoumaru leaned over the woman, Ganzu had at least had the good sense to seal the wounds and he’d not bitten too deeply. It would look like quite the vicious love bite come morning. Judging by the heavy scent of alcohol on her person, she’d not recall what had occurred here. To be safe, he touched her forehead, sending her into the realms of deep and twisted dreams. Then he sought the Keeper. Youko leaned against the wall, watching Sesshoumaru approach him, “You saw to it?” he asked. The fox shook his head and smiled, “Didn’t have to” he replied. Sesshoumaru’s brow arched in question. “She did fine on her own, for now” Youko supplied, “And you? Is that blood I smell on you?” Sesshoumaru lifted the long hem of his sleeve, “Only a touch” he replied, “Ganzu nearly drained a human dry before I stopped him”. Youko muttered in disgust, “Youkai of our levels are not meant to be babysitters”. Sesshoumaru agreed completely, “Well on the day that I can convince Inuyasha and Shippo to become the champions, I will give over the position”. Youko grunted, “Oh yes, because that is likely to happen in the next century”. Sesshoumaru sighed, “Kagome is working on them”. “There she is” Youko said suddenly and Sesshoumaru watched as the object of his newest mission passed less than a foot from him. The wraith not far behind her. “He’s there again” Esbet whispered, pulling closer to her friend. Lilian had had enough. Spinning she met the wraith head-on. “What the hell is your problem?” she demanded, drawing herself to her full height of five foot, three. Raven looked quite taken aback. “I request only the pleasure of your company lady” he purred. She tore her mask away, “And I do not wish it, that in itself should be enough. Stay away from me, stay away from my friend, or we are going to have a serious problem” she warned. Sesshoumaru was suddenly curious as to what a mere slip of a girl could do, but was not about to find out. Just as he stepped forward, the wraith made another advance. All the dog saw was a tiny, silk covered fist close the distance and connect quite solidly with the nose of the offender. He looked at the woman, expecting to see her fleeing, but no. No, fate would see fit to drop a stubborn female into his path. There she stood, small fists at the ready. The wraith quickly recovering. "Enough" Sesshoumaru snarled at him, and Raven, seeing him at long last fell back. Lilian stared up at the man who seemed to come from nowhere. His pale face and hair almost glowing in the dimness. Esbet had been wrong. This was the most gorgeous man she had ever seen, and he wore no mask, only odd colored paints on his regal face. Yes, she thought, regal was a good word for him. He locked eyes with her, golden meeting violet in a heated gaze. Then he stepped in front of her and turned to face the wraith caught in Youko's grip. Lilian blinked. What the hell was this about? Poking him in the shoulder, he gained his attention. His brow rising to his hairline at her audacity. "Um, excuse me" she said, in her most patient tone, "I think I've got it under control". Sesshoumaru grunted, "Be silent woman and know your place". She was dumbstruck that he had spoken to her in such a way. Her mouth hung open in shock for several seconds before female fury moved in and put the wind back in her sails. That was when it happened. The thing that opened her eyes completely. Raven had changed, his body seemed....like dark mist and he was slowly fading away. That was until the guy with the fox ears shook his seemingly empty hand and the man became solid once more. Youko growled in irritation at the blatant flaunting of non-human abilities. Glancing around, he believed he was in the clear, until he saw her face. The vixen had gone ghost white, her eyes narrowed in concentration and confusion. Her hand pointed at the wraith and she shook her head. Sesshoumaru glanced over his shoulder and saw her dazed look. "Not possible" she murmured, "He.... not real....not". And then all hell broke loose. Raven began cursing and struggling against Youko, who thumped him soundly on the head. "Quiet you". Sesshoumaru nodded to the fox and he dragged the wraith away, down into the council chambers for interrogation. Then he turned to the woman at hand, "It is not safe for you here" he told her, "Nor is your home. I am afraid I must take you into my custody for the time being". She blinked at him, "What?" she asked. He frowned, "I dislike having to repeat myself woman" he growled, "You will come with me and your friend.... she will forget". Lilian shook her head, backing away, but Sesshoumaru wasn't human and therefore much too fast for her. He appeared behind her, wrapping an arm around her waist and dragging her back against the length of his body. Esbet tried to help, but she failed as well. Sesshoumaru pressed a finger to her brow, "Sleep" he commanded and she sank like a stone. Lilian struggled against his hold, "Esbet!" she cried. Pressing his lips close to her ear, he whispered to her, "Youko will see her safely home. You would do well not to anger me". Her scent was clouding with fear and he murmured the command to her as well. Letting her fall into his frame and then they were gone. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
