The Legendary Story

“The Autumn Solstice”
“The What?”
“The autumn solstice, Master InuYasha, you must go and claim the power for your own!” Myouga wailed, hopping up and down.
“Keh, what the hell for?” InuYasha retorted.
“Because, the Tetsusaiga will undoubtedly grow stronger if you do!” Myouga responded, his tone implying more than
desperation.
“Keh!” he parried with an aggravated snort. “yeah, right, old man.”
Toutousai slouched, reaching around and trying in vain to scratch his back. ‘Oh, I’m so itchy . . .’ he groaned. “Why do you think I
asked you to give back Seibutsukouu?” he asked, speaking of a legendary blade that he had handed InuYasha in the hopes that
the sword would react to his pure blood. It didn’t.
InuYasha shrugged, his eyebrows drawing together into an annoyed scowl. “How the hell should I know?” he remarked.
The old sword-smith sighed. “I think . . . that you should take a moment to . . .” he trailed off, his eyelids lolling.
The surly hanyou rolled his eyes as he folded his arms across his chest and turned to stride out of the drafty cave. “But Master
InuYasha, Toutousai said that he would give it back if you would simply ask!”
“Keh!” InuYasha rumbled as he stopped mid-stride. “I ain’t asking the old codger to just give it back. Besides, what the hell do I
need it for?” he retorted.
Myouga sighed to himself, folding his four tiny arms together. “I just wish you’d listen once in a while, Master InuYasha . . .” he
said in a melancholic sort of way.
“Keh, I listen . . .” InuYasha countered.
Toutousai frowned. “Well, my boy . . . You’ve really beaten up the Tetsusaiga. Don’t you think it’d be a good idea to give
something else a chance? Besides, Sehiseishu is simply a training sword. It is basically for show, nothing more.”
InuYasha snorted. “Keh! Then why’d you even suggest it?”
“Suggest what?” Toutousai asked dubiously.
Seibutsukouu, a legendary long-sword that Toutousai said was supposed to have a rival power somewhere that it was meant to
link with, had supposedly been the weapon of choice to use when Kaguya had been banished to the glass-mirror. Its rival,
Seisoukentou, was supposed to be the sword of the air, while Seibutsukouu was the sword of spirits, or the rain. “You suggested
that I use Sehiseishu to beat Naraku, remember?”
“ . . . No . . .” Toutousai admitted, scratching his back more fervently now.
InuYasha couldn’t resist popping his knuckles one at a time in a blatant threat. “Whatever . . . look, I ain’t got time to screw
around like this!” he cried out, stomping out of the cave.
“Why is it that with every visit, Master InuYasha always seems to leave angrier than when he arrives?” Myouga marveled.
Toutousai shrugged. “I have absolutely no idea . . .”

“Yes,” Miroku interjected as he brought the steaming hot cup of green tea to his lips. “I’ve heard of the autumn solstice. It’s the
only time where youkai seem to act . . . I’m truly unsure of how to phrase it . . .”
“Like idiots?” Myouga offered, a slight twinge of annoyance evident in his tone.
Miroku lifted his eyebrows in surprise. “I wouldn’t say that, exactly. However during this time, youkai usually search for the most
powerful spot in which to gather energy. The autumn solstice is meant to strengthen one’s blood and spirit, or for a youkai, their
youki.”
Myouga digested this in silence, nodding his head as he desperately sought to understand why Toutousai would want InuYasha
to take the power emitted by the solstice for himself. “I see.”
“Does InuYasha know about this?” he queried.
Myouga shook his head sullenly. “No . . . Alas, Master InuYasha would most definitely not wish to strengthen the Tetsusaiga in
such a way.”
“I agree,” Miroku sighed. “He isn’t the type to simply grab for power. He’s one of the few hanyou who wish to earn it.”

“I don’t care how you do it,” Hakudoushi whispered. “I simply want it.” he instructed, his back against the wall of the hut as he
stared without expression at the wall in front of him. He couldn’t suppress the telltale signs of repressed anger, though.
Kagura gazed at him over her fan. He was getting to be a bit too bossy, wasn’t he? “And what if I were to say no?” she
challenged.
Hakudoushi shifted his cloudy eyes toward her. “You mean to disobey me? Not your best decision. Shall I ask Naraku to kill you
now?” he asked dubiously.
Kagura bristled. How dare he be so temerarious, so confident, so . . . ‘Damn it. He’s got a direct connection to Naraku . . .’
Kagura figured. She knew all too well about that, but hers had been severed long ago, probably around the time that Naraku
acquired his new form of Mt. Hakureizan. “Fine,” Kagura allowed. “But don’t expect—.”
“No excuses,” Hakudoushi cut in. “I don’t have time for you failures, or your excuses, either Kagura.” he scoffed.
The wind sorceress’s deep red eyes narrowed. Pulling a feather from her hair, Kagura drifted back into the windy skies. ‘What did
the two of them do with Kohaku?’ she wondered. Her trump card, Kagura could usually count on the young taijiya to back her up
if it was absolutely necessary. Not that she needed help, though. The wind carried to her a familiar scent. The copious and
disturbing scent of flowers and western land soil. ‘ . . . It’s that girl . . . ?’
Kagura leaned forward and her feather descended. She landed silently, swiftly, quickly moving behind a tree to avoid detection.
The gentle hum, the faintest song drifted to Kagura on a wavering breeze. “Rin . . .” Sesshoumaru called. The little girl, in her
infinite innocence stood up, a random assortment of various flowers gathered in her small hands.
Rin smiled up at Sesshoumaru. “I picked these. For her . . .” she squeaked.
Sesshoumaru gave no indication that he knew what she was talking about except a brusque nod. “Where is Jaken?” he asked.
Rin frowned. “I’m not sure, Sesshoumaru-sama. Master Jaken said that he’d search the grounds for any . . . um . . . danger, yes,
that’s it!” she grinned.
Sesshoumaru straightened his back a little more. How many times had he told his vassal, Jaken, not to leave Rin alone? The
exception to the rule was only in place when Aun was near, and it seemed as if the foolish imp had neglected to leave the dragon
mononoke with her. ‘He shall have to be punished . . .’ he thought lazily, his eyes searching the trees for any signs of movement.
The wind changed direction, carrying with an entire set of new scents—even one he was certain that he had smelled before. It
eddied around his nostrils, both anxious and acrophobic at the same time.
He turned in time to see a flash of red—of a white obi and a rosy kimono. For the briefest moment, he deigned to see what she
wind sorceress had come for. But that thought was easily pushed aside when he recalled what she had done to aid Naraku in
ensnaring him in a web of deception. “Kagura . . .” he called, his voice almost lost on the wind. He knew she could hear him.
Stepping out into the light of the bright sun, Kagura gazed at Sesshoumaru from over her fan. Her eyes florid, shrewd, analytical,
she gave him one of the most cold stares he had ever seen. ‘I still believe . . . despite what Naraku has done to himself.
Sesshoumaru is the only one who can kill Naraku, I just know it.’ she frowned. But he lacked one essential component: the ability
to shatter barriers, something only his worthless half-breed brother had accomplished.
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes the slightest bit. “Will I not receive an answer? Did you come to die, Kagura?”
“No,” she finally said. “I’ve come to ask you about something.”
“And you believe that I have the answer you seek.” he assessed.
Kagura smiled from behind her fan. “Precisely. Have you ever heard of Yokomuriko’s Journal?” Kagura asked, her voice languid,
dark.
Sesshoumaru quirked an eyebrow. “Perhaps. What concern is it of yours?” he asked debatably.
“It may be the one thing . . . that can finally destroy Naraku . . .”

Kagome willed herself not to listen, not to understand what Myouga was telling her. “I don’t believe it . . .”
Myouga nodded. “I understand your reluctance to trust in such an addled ritual. Nevertheless, I still must urge you to abandon
this stream soon after Naraku is defeated. If Master InuYasha is in danger, then just think of what may happen to you!”
“But what if we can’t defeat Naraku?” she challenged, a strange cynical fear lighting the depths of her mahogany gaze.
“That’s not possible for Master InuYasha. The blood that runs in his veins is . . . timeless, it is ancient . . . It is too powerful to be
beaten.” Myouga stated very matter of factly.
Kagome frowned thoughtfully. “Meaning?”
Myouga peeked up at her, only to find the girl looking at him expectantly. “It means that no other being, hanyou or youkai is going
to be able to defeat him. He has the pure blood of the Inu no Taisho.”
“Pure?” Kagome asked, her voice squeaking the slightest bit.
“Yes. The Master before InuYasha had the purest inu youkai blood there was. Trust me, I’ve . . . tested the others . . . His blood
links back to the very first youkai to live, I’m almost absolutely sure of it. Why do you think that Sesshoumaru is now Inu no
Taisho?”
“Don’t all of the countries have an Inu no Taisho?”
Myouga looked up at her suspiciously. “Eh, not exactly. However, I’m glad that you’ve taken my words seriously and
remembered them. Each continent has a Tai-Youkai, but there is only one supreme Inu no Taisho.”
“And that’s Sesshoumaru? But . . . InuYasha’s beaten him tons of times, shouldn’t he be . . “
“Am I to believe that you want Master InuYasha to become Inu no Taisho?”
Kagome shook her head. “I’ve always just wanted him to be InuYasha. That’s all he’s ever had to be to me . . .”
Myouga smiled, that awkward smile he used with his eyes. “I’ll be sure to remember that. You truly are one of a kind, Kagome.
Master InuYasha is lucky to have you as a friend.”
Kagome sighed. If only InuYasha could see that, too . . .

“I really don’t see that as a hindrance, do you, Sango, my dear?” Miroku pointed out reasonably.
“Keh! It’s not about what’s an interference, monk!”
“Then what is it?” Sango cut in.
InuYasha couldn’t answer a question he was unsure of the answer to. Nevertheless, even if he really did know what the answer
was, could he honestly ask Kagome to do that for him? Could he ask her . . . to find the one thing inside of her that had caused
the distance between them in the first place? ‘I have to . . .’
A/N:
I know about my fascination with swords, but they won’t take anything away from the storyline at all. Besides, InuYasha only
needs one sword, right? Those swords are simply . . . distractions . . . or so to speak . . .
