Ah-un bellowed loudly startling Rin from her dreamlike state. ‘We have finally arrived,’ she thought with a
yawn. For some reason she felt
exhausted, though she should not, having ridden the pack animal the entire
way. Glancing over at Sesshoumaru, she thought he seemed more at ease than he had
been the entire journey. Throughout the
twists and turns of the narrow rocky passes to his castle, he had disappeared
on more than a few occasions. When he returned, it was usually with a bit of
blood on his clothing. Of course, the
blood only stayed for a few minutes before it disappeared. ‘One of the
advantages to having enchanted clothing,’ she mused. Jumping off Ah-un, she led
the dragon by the reins behind her Lord and with Jaken
for the final leg to the gates.
The final bend around the mountain
always managed throw Rin into a state of awe. The gates to Sesshoumaru’s
castle, a place constructed with ancient magics by
his ancestors, were impressive to say the least. Stone doors engraved with ancient inu battle scenes extended hundreds of feet high with an
equally impressive width; large enough to allow him to pass through if he was
in his true form with room to stretch.
On either side of the gates were enormous statues of a smooth black stone. These two statues had the bodies of
humanoids, but faces that were clearly inu. Their
armor reflected their ancient origins that rippled with a fierce and protective
aura; one that Rin found comforting, for these two
statues were of female inu.
Rin ran past Jaken, seeing a patch of especially
beautiful flowers frozen through the ice that she knew would be sure to please
her Lord. It had been scarcely two days
since she had first awakened from her near death to find herself in the home of
Sesshoumaru, but she had already regained much of her
strength, to the chagrin of the imp that chased her.
“Rin! Come back here you troublesome child! You should not
be outdoors in this weather. Have you forgotten your previous lesson so soon?
Lord Sesshoumaru would not be pleased!”
Knocking
most of the ice from the frozen flowers, Rin examined
the deep red of the petals, bringing them up to her face, trying to determine
their scent. Unable to do so, the ice
long stealing it from them though preserving their beauty, she turned to see Jaken fall face first into the snow. Giggling and gently patting the kappa, she
stood up and was almost immediately overcome by a feeling of being
watched. However, it was not a threatening
feeling, but rather one of warmth.
Rin gasped and grabbed Jaken to her, pulling him
from the snow. “Jaken-sama!
What are those,” she pointed to two titanic statues that seemed to stand guard
over an expansive stretch of snow covered wall. Why had she not noticed them
before?
“Those
are the protectors of this fortress,” Jaken puffed
his chest out, swelling a bit with pride at his knowledge of the castle grounds
as he continued, “They stand in silent vigil protecting the descendants of the
ancient inus as well as those under their rule. They are imbued with magics
that you cannot possibly begin to fathom! It is said that should the castle
come under siege, they will become animated and destroy the invaders. During times of peace they serve to erect the
barrier that keeps this palace hidden from the uninvited.”
“But
Jaken-sama, they’re female…”
“Of
course they are female you insolent child! While men are powerful warlords and
conquerors, women are the fierce protectors of the hearth and will fight any
foe through the fires of hell to protect their offspring…Rin!
Rin! Are you paying attention?”
“They
make me feel warm, Jaken-sama. Do they have names?”
“Have
you not been paying attention to the wisdom that I have been trying to instill?
The warmth you feel is that protective aura, and yes, they do have names; as do
the other two on the outside of the gates.”
“There
are more?”
“Two more! Two more on the outside! Are you so dense that my words bounce off
you? What are you doing?!”
“Giving
them a hug, it must be lonely always being outside with no one to talk to.” Rin did her best to wrap her arms around one of their
ankles, but she could scarcely reach halfway around the front of the stone
boot. To her amazement the stone was as
warm as the aura she had felt.
“Rin, you should not be outside.”
“Yes,
Sesshoumaru-sama,” Rin
cheered gleefully, letting go of the statue and running past a mysteriously
unconscious Jaken, hopping up the steps to the warmth
of the castle, but not before she extended the flowers almost forgotten in her
grasp to her Lord. When he silently
accepted them, she smiled brighter, if possible, and ran inside.
Rin
looked away from the two guardian statues in time to see the doors open on
their own accord before Sesshoumaru. He didn’t seem to pay them much mind and
swept into the castle grounds. Rin on the other hand
waved and gave a short bow to each of them. It may have been her imagination,
but she thought she may have seen them slightly incline their head in her
direction.
Jaken was
a bit more vocal about his relief to have finally reached their destination. It seemed that the moment he was through the
gates he was on his back rubbing his little green feet. Rin took this as
the perfect opportunity to torment the imp by snatching his hat and running up
to her room. Or at least that was her
plan, but she had forgotten just how large and complex the castle structure
was. Before she was even in the same
wing as her room he was panting for breath and Jaken
was nowhere in sight. The black hat in
her hand was soon forgotten and tossed to the wayside. If nothing else, she seemed to be near the
library, the most likely place Sesshoumaru would be
after he briefed the skeleton crew that maintained the upkeep while he was out
securing his lands. She suspected that
over the next few days a few more advisors and servants would show up to
perform their duties for her Lord.
This wing of the fortress was
constructed and decorated with dark polished woods and curving hallways leading
off in every direction. The first time
she had come here, she was with Sesshoumaru, and she
still managed to get herself lost.
However, since then, she had mastered the art of reading the subtle
hints that the architects had build into the structure. A lighter shade of wood depicting a sitting inu with his paw on a scroll facing a west passage inlaid
in the surrounding darker grain was one of the many whimsical hints that she
had come to adore.
Soon enough she found herself
outside the door she knew housed her Lord.
For a moment she hesitated. With so many questions he had on her mind,
how would she go about getting answers from her Lord?
“Rin,
enter.”
Rin
jumped in her skin and mentally cursed herself. ‘Of course he knew I was out
here. I really should have though out exactly what I wanted to ask him.’
Without further hesitation she slid open the heavy door to the library. Sesshoumaru was
casually sitting on the edge of a large mahogany desk unfurling a scroll at the
top of a tiered platform centrally located.
The large room was round and extended up to the top of the spire. There
were literally hundreds of thousands of scrolls housed in the library. She
always wondered why her Lord had decided to make this his office area. If it were her, she would be too distracted
by all the fascinating stories and historical accounts to get any work done. If
she knew how to read, that is.
From his position in the room, Sesshoumaru looked up at her still standing in the doorway.
“Come in and close the door.” She complied, but he noticed the hesitation in
her step. “I have sent for a tutor. You
will be learning how to read and write as well as how to conduct yourself as my
ward.” She did not object, not that he suspected she would, so he continued,
“There will also be a delegate from a neighboring wolf tribe within the castle
grounds by tomorrow,” he paused gauging her reaction, for he was no stranger to
her phobia of wolves. “That is all.”
By this time her mind was reeling. Wolves? Though she was overjoyed that she would soon be
learning how to read and write, the news that there would be wolves in her
sanctuary was unsettling. Wolves were cruel and killed little girls like her
for sport. However, she managed to quell
her inner terror long enough to smile at her Lord and thank him for the tutor.
“Is there something on your mind, Rin?”
“Yes.”
“Go on.”
“Well, you see,” Rin paused for a moment choosing her words. She didn’t
quite understand what exactly she wanted to ask him, “today on Ah-un, I had
these strange feelings, and I enjoyed them.”
CLACK! Rin looked at the
offending object that had interrupted her.
Sesshoumaru had dropped the scroll that he was
holding, but he didn’t seem to notice. He was staring at her intently, his
mouth slightly ajar.
“Sesshoumaru-sama?” After several long moments, Rin reached out to touch his hand, but he quickly retracted
it and in the blink of an eye was sitting behind his desk with slightly more
composure.
“Go on.”
“And um, well after you came to
check on me because I almost fell off Ah-un I also noticed that I was really
wet down here,” Rin motion to between her legs, “and
I don’t know why.”
Sesshoumaru’s
left eye began to twitch. Never in his existence had he ever fathomed that he
would be explaining sexuality to a human; much less a little human girl in his
care.
‘Well,
you could always show her.’
‘Excuse me?’
‘You
heard me, show the girl what her body can do…what yours can do…to hers.’
‘That would not be proper.’
‘So
you have given it consideration?’
‘That’s enough from you. Silence!’
Bringing his hand to rub the bridge
of his nose, Sesshoumaru mentally cursed his own
inner dialogue. A slight shifting of
fabric brought his attention back to his young ward. ‘That’s right,
she is going to want an answer.’
“Rin.”
“Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama?”
“You body is telling you that you
need to learn to read so that your questions can be fully answered by the
ancient wisdom within these halls.” Sesshoumaru
motioned to the many scrolls within the library.
‘Well
that was clever.’
‘Thank you.’
‘I
was being sarcastic, that was complete bullshit.’
Before he could respond to his
inner dialogue, Rin gasped and smiled at him like he
had just revealed the mysteries of the universe. “Thank you Sesshoumaru-sama!”
Sesshoumaru
merely nodded and dismissed her from his presence. As she went skipping out of the library, he
ran his hand over his face again and looked down at his lap. There was something about Rin
standing before him, innocently telling him about her first orgasm that had him
in the beginning stages of a painful arousal. He was not proud of it, and chose
not to dwell on the matter. Reaching across the desk to grab another scroll
from one of his vassals, he continued on as if nothing had happened.
