New Troubles
Inuyasha trudged through the snow. The storm had lasted for two days and, while it had left the landscape breathtaking, the half demon found he was not in any kind of mood to enjoy it. Those two days, confined comfortably in a cave with Sesshomaru... it should have been an amazingly pleasant
experience. But, unfortunately, there had been a slight problem with the way things should have been.
The source of that problem bounded down through the snow to stand beside Inuyasha. His name was Doror, and his long, black hair rippled in the slight wind as he turned to grin at the half demon.
Since his appearance that first night of the storm, when Doror had explained how the light of their fire had saved him from wandering aimlessly in the blinding snow, the demon had been nothing but a thorn in Inuyasha's side. The half breed's initial dislike of the strange demon had quickly developed into a deep and abiding hatred- and it didn't help that Doror was poised and attractive; his skin was rich and golden, like honey, and was set off nicely by deep black hair and the most intense blue eyes Inuyasha had ever seen. "It is a marvelous day, is it not Inuyasha?" Doror said easily. "The sky is clear after the storm. I hope we find something to eat soon, mm?" He stepped forward and continued down the mountain ahead of Inuyasha, leaping through the snow and scattering it around him. The half demon glared at his back as he moved away.
Damn him.
Inuyasha glanced back up the mountain they were descending. Sesshomaru was proceeding slowly, taking the time to take in the magnificent vista of the snow covered mountains. He hadn't seemed at all bothered about Doror's presence, and that bothered Inuyasha. It was obvious- to Inuyasha, anyway- that there was only one reason Doror was hanging around, and that reason
was Sesshomaru. Inuyasha had several times caught the strange demon watching his brother when he thought no one was looking. It made something writhe inside of Inuyasha, something that wanted to lash out at the demon and crush him. But a greater part of Inuyasha understood that his jealousy was foolish, and more than a little childish. Sesshomaru was not some possession that could be stolen away from him, and whatever his brother wanted, neither Doror nor Inuyasha was going to influence him in some other course. Inuyasha wondered if it was better or worse that, other than allowing the demon to join them, Sesshomaru had shown no interest in Doror's subtle advances. But still Doror's possessive gaze followed Sesshomaru almost constantly.
Damn him.
He hadn't remembered it at first, but Inuyasha had seen Doror watching them earlier as they had fought with the group of demons before the storm. There hadn't been much time, or cause, to think about it before but he wondered what Doror had been doing. Getting his first good look at Sesshomaru, Inuyasha would bet, and his stopping by their cave later had been no chance of fate. Doror had said that he lived not far away and was familiar with the area; another annoying thing about him, he had made himself useful and had shown them a path down through the mountains suddenly formless under feet of snow.
Inuyasha's stomach growled and he rubbed at it absently. He'd been a little hungry before the storm; by now he was starving. Something moved beside him and he glanced up into his brother's face; Sesshomaru had caught up to him while he'd been standing there musing. The demon smiled softly, but just as he was about to say something Doror hailed them excitedly from below.
"I have found us lunch!" he called.
Damn him.
--
After lunch, Sesshomaru was thinking about Rin.
He found he was rather worried about her. He couldn't think why. Both Miroku and Sango had
proven to him already to be more than competent caregivers for the child. The monk and the demonslayer were also both accomplished fighters, should that be necessary; though he shouldn't think so, since before he left he had sent the dragon creature Aa-Un to watch over Rin as well- and to keep her from following him. Her accompanying Inuyasha and himself on this journey had been out of the question, obviously. Though... he found himself missing her presence. He wondered how long they would be gone, and how changed she would be when he returned. Humans changed so quickly...
He blinked out at the shimmering whiteness of the mountain landscape laid before him. It was an
excellent view, but he noticed Inuyasha didn't seem to be enjoying it as he had been previously on their journey. He supposed it had something to do with their encounter with the demons before the storm. Sesshomaru frowned; he was going to have to find a way to fix that.
"The view is better from over here a bit more."
Sesshomaru turned toward the voice to meet the amazingly blue eyes of the demon Doror. He blinked absently in affirmation that he had heard the other demon's comment. Truthfully, he's almost
forgotten about the traveling companion they'd picked up. The demon was polite and well-mannered, as well as being slightly useful- he'd easily procured them a meal earlier. While Sesshomaru did not appreciate being interrupted during his private time with his brother the strange demon had been, in particular, unfailingly polite to Inuyasha since arriving. It was something Sesshomaru had rarely, if ever, encountered before; demons were either rude to the half breed or ignored him outright. He could tell that Doror was doing it to gain favor with him, though what exactly the other demon wanted from him he hadn't really thought about. Doror's politeness pleased him, so he supposed he might give the demon whatever it was he wanted; as long as he didn't overstay his welcome. Sesshomaru had noticed that his brother did not seem at all pleased by Doror's presence; he assumed it was for the same reasons he himself had. The beginning of their trip had been... delicious, for lack of a better term. He found a smile on his face as he remembered their first days of traveling. It was not that he disliked his brother's companions, but having Inuyasha all to himself and completely his... His grin was downright salacious as he remembered.
Doror stepped forward, right into the vista that Sesshomaru was absently admiring as he thought, and the demon found himself forced to notice the demon again. Not that it was too great a chore to do so- he was not bad looking, with warm skin and dark hair to offset his unnaturally blue eyes. Sesshomaru supposed that some might find Doror desirable. He supposed he might have, at another time. His mouth curled slightly in annoyance now, Sesshomaru turned away from the view to look for Inuyasha.
--
It was near dusk and Inuyasha bounded up one of the foothills of the mountain range. It was still a large mountain by many standards, but compared to the towering peaks nearby it was insignificant. He looked out at those peaks and felt a thread of annoyance creep through him. He felt... very small in this large world. It was not a feeling he enjoyed, and it made him even more irritated than he was already. He turned away from the view of the sun setting behind those peaks to glance down to where Sesshomaru and Doror made their way through the snow. His brother looked up at him, but he was too far away for Inuyasha to see his face. Inuyasha watched them for awhile before he jumped down from his peak to walk beside the two demons.
He knew as soon as he landed on a patch of ice that it wasn't going to hold his weight. The snowfall
hid the fragility of the half-melted and suddenly refrozen ice beneath it and as Inuyasha landed on it he felt it crack. He saw Sesshomaru's head come up as he heard the sound, but there was nothing that either of them could really do; it happened too quickly. Inuyasha barely had time to brace himself for the unpleasantness of plunging into freezing waters before the ice split open beneath him, but at the last breath a hand snatched him from the icy grip of the river.
Inuyasha looked up into the concerned gaze of Doror as the demon bent over him. "Are you alright?" he asked.
All of his irritation suddenly rose to the forefront and Inuyasha snarled at the demon, curled claws
slashing at the hand that had pulled him to safety. He didn't need any damned help; falling in the river wouldn't have killed him, just soaked him and pissed him off. Doror pulled back in surprise, his
hand trailing blood as he held it curled against his body defensively. He hissed, pointed teeth showing and blue eyes flashing, as he crouched in the snow, preparing to spring at the half breed.
"Inuyasha."
Sesshomaru's voice stopped them both, but as Inuyasha glanced at his brother he could read nothing in the demon's face, and the clipped tone of his voice revealed only that he was angry about something- what that was was unclear. The three of them stood for a moment, looking at each other, but as Inuyasha glanced at Doror the anger that had driven him to attack the other demon
faded away in Sesshomaru's presence; he could feel Doror was also reluctant to fight him in front of Sesshomaru.
An uneasy truce established, the trio continued in silence, in search of a place to spend the night.
