“I hate
clothes.”
The
statement was completely out of the blue and out of character for Kagome, but
for some reason she just felt the need to say it. Her dark eyes were geared and
locked on the universe above. Clear of any clouds the stars shown brightly and
everything was visible under the full moon’s glow, allowing the girls maximum
security while they bathed. Near the bank’s edge Kirara sat watching the fireflies
twinkle as they passed by.
“What?”
“I hate
clothes. They’re so binding and expensive. Why can’t we just run around naked
the way Kami made us?”
Sango
stared at her friend from across the warm waters of the spring with a raised
brow questioning her words. Never had she heard a female complain about
clothing, it was only men, such as Miroku, that wanted to run around free. Most
women loved their garments and did almost anything to don the richest of silks
and fabrics. There had to be something wrong with her friend.
“Kagome,
did you drink some of Kaede’s sake?”
“No. I just
felt like throwing that our there.” Thinking to herself, she nodded in approval
of her answer. She sunk lower into the water keeping only her head above the
surface allowing her muscles to soak, shedding her tension to give way to
relaxation.
“Oh, ok.”
Staring at
the young miko, Sango wondered if her statement had another meaning, but
considered to take it as it were. She didn’t want to probe into Kagome’s
reasoning for finding clothes to be a burden and knew that whatever was really
bothering her friend would eventually come out. Waiting for Kagome to express
her true thoughts, she slowly eased her self deeper into the pool to let the
day’s stresses melt away.
“Do you
ever wonder why things are the way they are Sango?”
“What do
you mean?”
“Like why
the color blue is blue. Who determined that it should be called that? Or why
the grass is green. Why not purple, or red, maybe even orange. And what about
the rotation of the earth and how gravity really works preventing us from
floating off into space and the earth from smashing into the sun to burn up and
die.”
“Umm…”
Sango never once considered any of those things. In this time things were
simpler and people just took it for the way it was, not dwelling on the whats, whys, and hows of the
world around them. Besides, even if she was one to ponder on the curiosities of
the universe, she didn’t really understand much of what Kagome was saying. Her
tongue seemed to forever ramble on about odd things that most likely came from
her future world.
“The stars
are millions of miles away and yet we see their glow all the way over here. It’s
so weird. And to think the moon only shines because it’s reflecting the sun’s
rays. How does it do that when it’s just a big freaking rock?” Throwing her
arms up towards the sky she let them slap back down on the water splashing her
friend. Kirara was just barely able to jump away from the on coming assault of
water.
“But I
thought…”
“The end of
pi, is there even an end? And why the hell would you want to use a number that
doesn’t have a damn end. That’s just stupid! Isn’t rounding it to a certain
decimal cheating or something? And how can we learn so many languages.
Technically we’re only supposed to know one or whatever but there are people
out there that know 20, or even more! Wouldn’t all that make your brain hurt?”
Kagome sat up to consider her own words as if expecting to come to some sort of
conclusion.
“Mine
already hurts listening to you,” Sango laughed to herself.
“And
speaking of your brain, why is it that we only us 10% of it? What happened to
the other 90%? Is it just dead weight? Seriously...” Kagome knew Sango didn’t
know about anything she was going on about, but for some reason she just couldn’t
stop. It was as if a flood broke free from her mind’s mental dam, drowning anyone
in its path.
“In all
honesty I never really considered any of that.”
“I wonder
all the time why things are the way they are, what their purpose is, and just
why. There has to be a bigger reasoning for it all.”
“Sometimes
things just can’t be explained.”
“Ok,” she
turned to Sango not really listening to her, “how about this. What about how
certain fraises just don’t really make any sense. I just, I don’t know…”
She stopped
a moment to ponder her words, returning her gaze toward the stars. “Like jumbo
shrimp. Shrimp is small, tiny even, the name itself means small, so how can a
shrimp be jumbo? Or how can a person have a hard stare? A look isn’t something
that’s tangible, you know? So how can it be hard, or soft for that matter?”
“Well…”
“I know
it’s more of a description but still, when you really think about it, it just
doesn’t make much sense. Like how can you ‘break’ your heart and still be alive?
It’s in your freaking chest for God’s sake, it’s not like you can drop it and
it’ll smash into a thousand pieces like glass. I understand ripping it out, you
can do that, literally, but to smash it? Bash it? Or crush it? That’s not
really possible when you get down to the jest of things. I mean come on. If it
were to somehow break you’d be dead! How can it break and you keep moving?”
“Does this
really have anything to do with silly phrases and the world around us, or does
it really have to do with InuYasha?”
Sango hit
the problem square on the nose. She looked at the Miko whose gaze slowly came
down from the stars to look upon the spring’s edge and watched as Kirara
swatted at a passing firefly. Even if she didn’t want to admit it, InuYasha was
the reason for her ramblings of everything; he would forever be one of the many
anomalies she would never understand.
As she
brought her legs to her chest, squishing her breasts against her thighs, she
spoke softly. “Is it really that obvious?”
“In all
honesty, I just thought you ate a bad mushroom until you started talking about
a broken heart.”
Kagome sighed and turned to
her friend with torn eyes. There were no tears or pain in them, just a little discomfort.
Apparently she knew things would never change between them making the
relationship she had with InuYasha one of friendship, but hope somehow always
found its way into every young soul.
“I just
don’t know what he expects of me or what he wants. I mean, what the hell was
that back there.” She huffed in frustration. “I’m so stupid. Thinking he’d ever
look at me as more than just a friend, what a joke! Every time I try and back
off, to be his friend, something like that happens and I’m thrown into a world
of confusion and denial.” In her desperation to describe herself better she
mocked her own personal thoughts in a high pitch valley girl voice. “‘Oh he’ll
love me one day. He’ll leave his first love for me. He’ll see me for me.’ Blah, blah, blah. Yeah right.” With
a heavy sigh she gave up thinking about him and hugged herself tighter.
Sango swam
to be by Kagome’s side and faced her adoptive sister. With the full acknowledgement
of the real problem, the demon slayer hoped she could help ease Kagome’s mind
and aching heart. “I’ve never known what a man wanted or expected from a woman,
besides something perverted, but with the way he looked at you Kagome, I really
think InuYasha is starting to look at you as you, not Kikyo’s incarnation.”
“Yeah right. I’ll never be more than a duplicate.”
Sango
sighed. She knew how Kagome felt; even if their love dilemmas were different
they still had common ground. “I don’t blame you for doubting me Kagome. I
wonder everyday if Miroku’s feelings for me are true or if he’ll continue to
chase after anything that wears a skirt. It’s like we’re destined for nothing
more than what we are now, whatever that may be.”
“He loves
you. You can tell by the way he looks at you.” Kagome dropped her legs back
down under the water and turned toward her friend.
“Oh, so I’m
supposed to believe you but you won’t believe me?”
Kagome
spoke with drops of attitude in her words. “He looks at you ALL the time Sango.
Not just a second or two in wonderment. All. The. Time.”
Sango shook
her head; Kagome’s words didn’t feel like truth. “Then why do I feel so empty?”
“Because
men are just stupid and don’t know how to really share their feelings and get
to the point, unless it has to do with sex.”
“True…”
Both girls
looked within themselves and thought of the heartache they’ve received over the
years and how the men in their lives could have handled their words and
situations better. As if they shared the same mind they uttered “bakas” in
unison, instantly turned to each other and laughed at their similar situations
with the opposite sex and the obvious humor in it.
“Let’s make
a pact Sango. If our guys, or any future ones for that matter, continue to be
bakas and never say what they really mean, we’ll live together at the side of
some village with a thousand cats and become the two crazy old bitties thought to be witches by all the children!”
“Make it nekomata
demons and we have a deal!”
“Mew!” Kirara wanted more of her kind too, not just basic
house cats.
“DEAL!”
Kagome
grabbed Sango’s hand to make the pact official and both laughed again. Just the
thought of each other, old and living together with so many demon cats scaring
children away, was something neither could hold their laughter from. Even if it
was a silly pact between friends deep down inside they both knew it might one
day become their future. If so, at the very least they would have each other
and laughter for the rest of their years.
“Could you
imagine? Oh we’d be a scary set of old ladies.” Sango shook her head petting
Kirara at the pond’s edge. “You with your miko powers and my unusual strength
for a grandmother, they really would think of us as witches!”
“Come here
my pretty!” Kagome imitated her older self cracking her voice and making it
look like she no longer had teeth. With scrunched hands and a bent finger
beckoning Sango closer she continued with the gag. “You’re so cute I could eat
you up!”
Sango
laughed and with a mock voice continued with the game. “Oh
no! Not crazy old Kagome! She’s an evil witch with many spells!” She
pretended to run away from her friend throwing her arms in the air playfully.
“That’s
right and I’ll curse you till your dying day if you steal from my garden! Get
off my lawn! Go my furry pretties and attack!!” She yelled to her imaginary
cats, cackled and threw back her head like witches in the old movies.
Breaking
down in laughter again the two thought on how lucky they were that even in the
worse of times they had each other for company and to cheer each other up.
Wiping a
tear of laughter from her eye Kagome sighed. “Oh, that would be some future.”
“Hopefully
we live that long to see it! Hey, could you pass me the shampoo?”
Kagome
reached for her pack and grabbed the bottle of sweet smelling goo, poured some for her self with a ‘pffffft’
and tossed the bottle to her companion. Scrubbing her hair with the shampoo she
turned to Sango already doing the same massaging motions.
“Hey, are
we going to bathe Kirara tonight? When was her last bath?”
“Ummm.” Turning to look at her
little demon friend while still scrubbing she pondered the thought of her last
bath. “I think about a month ago maybe. Should we?”
Kagome dunked
her head under the water’s surface rinsing out the suds and reached for the
conditioner. “I don’t see the harm in it. How’s her flea and tick problem?”
They both
looked at the scratching cat and determined it time for her to get another
bath. Realizing the danger she was in, Kirara gave out a hiss and jumped on top
of a near by rock out of reach.
“OOO. I guess lil Miss Kitty wants
to continue scratching herself to death! Buyo’s the
same way back home. There’s just something about cats and water that doesn’t
agree.”
“Oh, come
on Kirara. I thought you liked your baths.” Sango pleaded with a pout to her
life long companion and let out a little laugh as the cat demon turned her back
to the two bathing humans. Kirara was not in the mood to have a bath, let alone
get wet. She would agree to it later, IF the itching became too much to bear.
Dunking her
own head under water, Sango rinsed the shampoo from her hair and asked for the
conditioner to finish with the bath.
“My hair’s
never felt this good before. I hope you never run out of this stuff.”
“Me
neither. When I first got here I couldn’t believe you didn’t have shampoo yet!
How can you even live without it?”
“I don’t
know, but I’m SO glad I met you.”
“Gee
thanks! I know why you stay by my side now!”
“NO! You
know you’re like a sister to me!”
“Yeah, yeah. You’re just using me for my shampoo!”
“Well, I
never said being your friend didn’t come with benefits!”
They once
again broke into fits of giggles. Most every time they were alone together they
found something to laugh about, whether it was a joke of some kind or poking
fun at themselves. No matter what brought the two in stitches it was these
moments that made things a little bit easier to deal with. For Kagome it was
like she never left home and for Sango it helped ease the sorrow of being the
last of her tribe. Some how with each other they felt a little less alone.
“What do
you think is going on now?” Sango wasn’t really interested in anything going on,
but she didn’t want to fall into silence.
“I really
don’t know. InuYasha’s probably talking with the clay bitch, Kaede is likely
cleaning up, and somewhere Shippo is following Miroku who’s trying to find a
way to watch us from the shadows.”
At that moment
Miroku tumbled out of the bushes with the kitsune around his waist attempting
to see what the Monk was looking at. With an embarrassed ‘I’m caught’ look on
his face he began to explain his presence saying something about looking out
for trouble. Sango wanted nothing of it and yelled to Kirara to chase the Monk
off. She began to laugh as she watch his retreating form with the kitsune
running behind scared and not knowing why he was in trouble.
“Wow.
Things are really predictable around here aren’t they?”
Kagome
shrugged. “With friends like ours it’s kind of hard not to know what they’re
doing!”
With
another laugh they finished up their baths, dressed, and gathered their things
up to start their walk back to the village. The night was coming to a close and
they were glad to rest even if their minds still buzzed with thoughts.
“Yeah, I
hate clothes.”
“Me too.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
InuYasha
sat in his favorite tree; the breeze barely lifted his silky strands cooling
his heated skin. His meeting with the clay priestess was short and bitter. He
didn’t want to think about it nor did he want to know what was going through
her mind. For now he would accept things for how they were and be done with it.
The light
scent of orchids touched his nose, Kagome and Sango were returning to Kaede’s
hut. Now in her pajamas Kagome looked at peace with a smile on her face. The
girls were talking about some sort of restriction and laughing about it. He was
both thankful and disappointed by Kagome’s happiness; at least she wasn’t
bothered by him leaving, but then again, not being bothered is what
disappointed him. It seemed she was getting over him, and he wondered if his
chance came and left.
Shaking the
thought from his mind he closed his eyes to try and sleep despite his hunger
pains and aching heart. In the morning, after some thought on his night, he’d
bother Miroku about the shards and get his pack moving away from the area as
quickly as possible. He didn’t want to linger near the forest any more where
prying eyes could follow his every move.
Wishing he
was in the arms of his love, he gave way to sleep and dreamed about his heart’s
desire.
~*~End Chapter Three~*~
A/N:
Chapter
Three is finally here! Sorry it took a little longer than chapter two. Honestly
I had chapter two done around the same time as the first and only had to do
some revising. Any way, I hoped you enjoyed “Girl Talk and Madness!”
No Kikyo
yet, but perhaps in later chapters she’ll appear. I hoped that didn’t
disappoint any one. What’s my reasoning for not showing you the conversation
between her and InuYasha? You’ll see! ~hehehe~
Thank you
once again for all the wonderful reviews and your ratings! I really enjoy them
and they help me to write the story!
Akdreamer: Thanks for reading! I’m glad you’ve
enjoyed and hope you keep reading!
WTW:
~Smiles~ I’m glad you like how it’s coming along. I know it’s slower than most fics but I really want to develop the plot more and show
the relationships between everyone. The next chapter shows more of
Sango/InuYasha and Kagome/Miroku relationships (not in a bf/gf
way though). Sorry this chapter wasn’t up as quickly as the other. L.
Thanks for reading and I honestly don’t know how many chapters there will be,
but it’s guaranteed not to be a short story!
LadyCash: Yay! I’m glad it
made you smile. I really enjoyed writing the tag scene. The thought of them
having fun instead of yelling each other’s heads off makes me feel all warm and
fuzzy inside! Lol. Sorry about not showing Kikyo in this chapter. I promise
she’s in a future one. Hopefully she meets your standards! Thanks for returning
and reviewing again! ~Hugs~
Freelke: You love it? YAY! Lol. I hoped you enjoyed
this chapter, sorry it’s not two but I don’t want to get ahead of myself and
start killing the story. Quality before quantity! Thank you for reading and the
praise! You’re reviews help to improve my work!
Lynn
Bear: Thank you, thank you, thank you. For this fic I wanted to keep the characters true but not static,
and I’m so glad that everyone is seeing it! The next chapter might be a bit of
a surprise on InuYash’s side, but in my opinion after
a few years together, he might sound like that. Lol. Yeah, I’m not much of a
fan of Kikyo, but I’ve been through some things that have given some insight
into how she feels, so I really respect her as a character. Though I really
wish she’d leave InuYasha and Kagome alone! Thank you for reading and reviewing
and I hoped you enjoyed this chapter too!
InuYoukai: I’m glad you like the story and no
worries, being my first baby I’m not going to let it die.
Ygfi:
My you’re a tricking one to please! Lol. I know it’s still slow and all, but yeah it’s still in the
intro phase. The next chapter has a kind of fight scene so hopefully that is
more to your liking. And sorry about that huge gap, I didn’t notice it before…
You’ll like my story… I’LL FIND A
WAY! Lol.
Thank you
again, everyone, for reading, reviewing and rating. I’ll keep up the good work
as long as you keep on reading. After all, what’s the point of writing if it’s
never read? ~smiles~
See you
next time!
Much Love,
Becca
