I'll see what I can do about updating my other stories, but no promises are

Sliders
Chapter Three
Putting the Demons to Rest
Kagome opened her eyes only to quickly get something in
them as she tried. Wincing, she reached up a hand to both dislodge the piece of
something out of her eye and shield her eyes from something else getting into
them. After a few moments of struggling, she finally was able to open her eyes
and see where she was. It seemed as if she had been transported to a desert of
some sort. ’Definitely
not Japan…or anywhere I’ve been before…’
she thought to herself with a half-hearted sigh.
Glancing around slowly, she tried to pick a direction,
but was pleasantly surprised when she noticed someone traveling in the
distance. It was hard to see him considering he was wearing a dark brown cloak
of some sort, which did quite a job of concealing him in the sands, but she
couldn’t mistake his aura. Quickly, she put the Tetsuseiga
back into its sheath before she called out to him and began running towards
him.
Vash was once more alone and traveling, though he was
sure that Meryl and her ditsy, but entertaining friend, Millie, would once more
be hot on his trail. He was surprised though when he heard someone’s voice calling
to him. The voice was decidedly female, but it didn’t belong to anyone he knew.
With confusion, he tilted his head in the direction of the voice only to find
himself face to face with a girl with long, black hair. For a moment, and
really, it was only a moment, he thought it was Rem. The girl before him was
about Rem’s height, with sparkling sapphire eyes, and
her facial features were even similar to his long time gone mentor and
caretaker. He could feel his heart lurch at the sight of her, before he pushed
the thoughts away of her being the girl of his past.
Kagome paused as she came up to the man wearing, what she
saw now, was a burlap sack of some sort, and thin, but transparent sunglasses.
She saw that he was stunned, and confused, and as her eyes met his, she also
saw desperation and hope, before it left to be replaced with sadness. She
wasn’t sure what had happened to elicit this kind of reaction, but she
refrained from asking before she said, “My name is Kagome. I don’t know where I
am…and I was hoping you could help me.”
Vash looked even more stunned at that statement, before
he switched from downcast Vash mode, to his outgoing, happy character. It was
the character he used to get through the tough days, and he wouldn’t let her
see him downcast. He wanted her to see the brighter side of him, and besides,
she knew nothing about him, so he even more so, wanted to show her a character
that was far different from the character of the rumored Vash the Stampede.
“Sure!” he replied brightly, earning a small look from Kagome before she
smiled, and for a second, his breath was taken away before it came back. Her
smile was so like Rem’s that it had his pausing once
more, and this time, he couldn’t stop himself from looking over her features
once more, and make sure, truly, that this wasn’t his beloved Rem.
She looked curious at his glance over, before she noticed
him relax, and once more, his face filled with sadness, though she noted that
he took great care not to show that. She was an expert at hiding her feelings,
so she knew when other people were. She didn’t push at him though and asked,
“What is your name? And where are you headed?”
He looked slightly surprised at her questions, but he
shook that surprise away. He wasn’t sure who this random traveler was, but she
seemed unafraid of traveling in the desert. It was strange, because he knew
just how dangerous it was. She seemed human enough, and she looked as though
that she hadn’t prepared at all for the trip, save for one sword in her hands.
She didn’t look as if she had brought any water with her, or food, or anything
that would ensure her survival as she crossed the sandy land, but his curiosity
was put on pause as he finally spoke up and answered her questions. “My name is
Vash, and I’m headed to Valencia.” He said, noting her confused expression.
“Valencia? Where is that?” she asked, holding the sword
in her hands tighter to her form. He noticed that she didn’t react at all to
hearing his name and his was even more confused, but also a little pleased that
she wasn’t scared of him.
“It’s about 10 miles more in this direction. It’s one of
the larger towns that sprung up. The oasis still seems to be strong there.” He
informed her, noting that she seemed even more uneasy about his explanation.
“O…Oasis…right…you…can I tag along with you until we get
there? I have no idea where I am…and no idea where I’m going to go.” She
replied softly, her sapphire eyes turning downcast to the sands as they walked
side by side. His eyes gentled at the obvious distress that the girl beside him
was feeling. He wasn’t sure where she came from, but it wasn’t hard to see that
she wasn’t from around here, and his eyes seemed to open further at a thought.
Could she have just woken up from one of the podded
ships that brought him to this planet?
“You’re more than welcome to travel with me!” he said
brightly, wanting to bring her some comfort. Once they got to Valencia, she
could figure out what she wanted to do there. He felt a small obligation to
her, if, indeed, it was the case that she had just woken up from a time-locked
sleep. She seemed unafraid of her situation, just upset. That in itself, had him respecting her a bit.
She lifted her head to look into the golden eyes of the
man before her, and she smiled, before saying, “Thank you so much. I don’t know
what I would have done if I wouldn’t have run into you. I don’t like the idea
of wandering in the desert here. I’m glad you were traveling here.” She said,
earning herself a smile in return. He couldn’t help but fall for that soft
smile and those endearing words. She wasn’t like other humans he had run into.
She had a bright personality and a gentle smile that seemed to draw him in. If
that weren’t enough, her sapphire eyes seemed to be limitless pools of
expression, and he liked the idea of studying them further.
“You’re welcome, but no thanks are needed…if you wouldn’t
mind me asking…where did you come from?” he asked, curious as to her
appearance, which was different to say the least as she wore a heavy blue coat
of dense material, with yellow ropes of cord adorning it, as well as a pair of
black leather boots that both looked far too large for her petite frame. She
was also carrying a sword that looked very old, even to his eyes. He could
smell the ancient scent wafting up from the article, but he was even more
intrigued by the scent that was coming from the girl. Her scent was unique and
unlike anything he had ever smelt before. She smelled of plants, forests
perhaps, and flowers. Again, his internal theory of her being from a pod made a
little sense. If she had been trapped on one of the ships, they had been
equipped with vegetation rooms and she might have picked up the scent of
greenery from there. ’But that would mean
that she hasn’t been traveling very long…I don’t see a ship anywhere around
here…’ he thought to himself as he awaited
her answer.
An uneasy smile crossed her features as she closed her
eyes and tried to think of a good lie to tell him. Nothing even remotely
believable came to mind so she settled for the truth. “I’m not from here. I’m
not even sure where ‘here’ is, to be honest. I opened my eyes, and I was in
this desert.” She said softly, earning a sympathetic look from the tall,
blonde-haired man.
Vash was surprised at her answer but it stood to reason that perhaps she was
from one of the podded ships that had ended up
populating this planet, and somehow she had been thrown from one of the ships
into the desert. It had been years since the ships came to this planet, but he
was certain that not all of the ships opened up and awakened the inhabitants
inside. He was sure that there was at least a pod or two that held people in
suspended sleep; he just hadn’t found them yet. “I see. Well, you can come with
me to Valencia, and you can see where you are.” He said with a warm, comforting
smile. Kagome’s own insecurities eased at that smile and she nodded and
returned his smile with one of her own.
“Thank you.”
~*~
A few hours later dusk fell on the desert and with the
semi-grueling pace that Vash set, they were on the outskirts of a town. Kagome
could see lights in the distance and she felt relieved that they weren’t just
wandering in the desert. She placed a stray hand on her companions arm and he
looked at her with a smile. “That’s the city.” He said, as he pointed with his
free hand towards the flickering lights of the city. It didn’t look like it was
big enough to be a city to Kagome, but perhaps there were different rules for
what was considered a city in this new place. The moment her hand touched his
though, her power flared slightly, as it resonated with the connection that he
had with plants. He wasn’t exactly normal, but Kagome’s own powers recognized
plants just because of the fact that she was a healer—herbs and other foliage
were a part of what a miko did just as easily as the healing powers did.
Vash was surprised that she touched him without
flinching, but when he felt that small wash of power flow over him his eyes
widened in shock and uncertainty. The power itself was gentle, almost calming
as it floated just over his skin. It felt vaguely familiar and he was instantly
wondering if she were like him. He was born with Knives from an experiment. He
had never known anyone else to have the abilities that he and his brother had.
Even now, he didn’t know if the power he was feeling was exactly like his or not. He didn’t say anything to it though, as he
silently studied it the more her hand rested on his arm.
“It’s a sight after looking at a bunch of sand all day.”
She said back with a small laugh, as she pulled her hand back to her side. She
was sweaty and tired, and she knew that there was no
less than a few pounds of sand in crevices that she didn’t know she had. “How
do you do it?” she questioned, looking up at his face.
He looked confused at her question. “Do what?”
“Travel across the desert all the time. On foot, no less. Aren’t there camels or horses you can
use?” she questioned as she began walking again with him towards the city in
the distance.
“There are animals, but most of the time people use
steamships to get around to the different cities, or stage coaches.” He
informed her as he glanced over her again. She was so strange. She didn’t know
anything about this planet they were on, and yet he didn’t know where she was
originally from just by how she spoke or what she talked about. He was
wondering where she came from, even now, as they walked towards the city.
“Steamships?” she questioned with confusion. “How can
ships go across a desert?” The only steamships she knew of went over water, but
he was saying they had some sort of ship that would travel across sand? This
place was so strange! It was unlike anywhere she’d ever been before and she
couldn’t help her growing fears about being stuck here.
Vash was again puzzled by what she said. What other ships
was she talking about? There wasn’t a big enough area of water on this planet
to warrant having ships, but she was unaware of steamships, or even the basic
workings of this planet. “I’m not sure how to explain it so you would be able
to understand.” He said softly, his own confusion evident as they walked. “We
have mechanical ships that go over the desert sands.”
Kagome gave him another confused and completely lost look
as she found herself uneasy as she looked around to the vast sands that seemed
to wrap around them. The sun was setting and she looked up at the sky as stars
began to fill the inky blackness and her breath caught in her throat. There
were two moons in the sky, and one of them was red. The other was a pale grey,
like the moon from Earth and it had a large crater in it; nothing like the moon
of Earth. “What the hell happened to the moon?” she questioned, her voice
taking on a tone that was close to hysterical.
Vash paused in his walking as he looked up to the moons
above the sky. She had said ‘moon’, singular, but there were multiple moons in
the sky around this planet. He wasn’t sure how to answer her, but she had
stopped walking, too, and was now looking at him with fear in her eyes. She
wasn’t afraid of him, he could tell, but she was afraid of what happened to
her. He didn’t know where she was from, but she knew that she wasn’t where she
was supposed to be. He took a step towards her and placed a gentle hand on her
shoulder. “The moon has been like that for a few years. I’m not sure where
you’re from, Kagome, but don’t worry. I’ll help you get back to where you need
to go. It’ll be alright. I promise.” He said, with what he hoped was a calming
smile.
Kagome staggered lightly under his touch before she
nodded, her eyes blinking rapidly to clear them of tears. She couldn’t break
down here. This was just another place she happened to land because of the Tetsuseiga. She would wait for the sword to glow and then
she would be hopefully home. He let out a small breath before he began walking
again with her towards the city. Within a half an hour they were at the city itself, and Kagome found herself shifting closer to Vash,
unsure of her new surroundings. He saw her move towards him and he found
himself moving to stand closer to her, too. If anyone dared to touch her he
would react and ask questions later. Usually he tried to avoid conflict, but he
wouldn’t put her in danger for his morals. She was scared and he had meant
every word he said. He would try to help get her back home, wherever her home
happened to be. Briefly, he thought that maybe she was lying to him, but no one
was that good of an actress. Besides, he had felt a glimpse of her strange
power, and that let him to believe that she was like him, and not a natural
being of this planet. “Let’s go to the inn. I’ll get us a room and we can see
if we can get something to eat. I’m sure you’re hungry, right?” he questioned,
as he guided them towards a two-story building that had a large sign that
proclaimed it was an inn.
Kagome nodded, and her stomach growled at the mention of
food. She hadn’t eaten in days, since that meal she’d eaten at Kenshin’s. That time seemed so far away that she found
herself taking ahold of his arm again. She had slept,
but it would take more than sleep to replenish her miko energies. A light flush
crept up on her cheeks and Vash smiled knowingly at her before he guided her
into the inn. A young girl stood at the front counter and she welcomed them.
“Do you have two rooms we can rent for the night?” Vash
spoke up, taking the lead as Kagome glanced around nervously. There were a few
men and women in another room playing cards and eating dinner, but as they
looked at her, the newcomer, she hid her face against the red of Vash’s coat.
She was ripped from her shyness when the girl replied, “I’m sorry,
we only have one room left. Is that okay?”
Vash looked back to Kagome who only nodded. She didn’t
care just as long as they were out of the elements. She’d sleep on the floor, after all, she wasn’t the one footing the bill. Vash
wasn’t so reassured about them sharing a room but he went ahead and handed over
some dollars and gave another gentle smile to Kagome as he felt her at his
back. She gave him back a shaky smile before he led them up the stairs towards
room number three, which was in the middle of the hallway. He opened the door
slowly before peeking around to make sure it was empty. She felt him tense as
he opened the door but relaxed as he did when he moved on into the vacant room.
It was a simple room, with a single bed in the corner and a table beside it.
There was another table with a glass pitcher with water in it, and a towel
folded up beside it. Kagome’s hopes of indoor plumbing were dashed but she
managed to keep her head up.
Vash watched her assess the room and he thought he saw
disappointment before she gave him a grateful smile. “Thank you for letting me stay with you tonight. You’ve done so much for me, I’m
really very thankful.” She said, as her hand squeezed his arm tenderly again.
He smiled at that gesture, and nodded back to her. “You’re welcome. I know
you’re probably feeling pretty grimy after that trek through the desert so I’ll
leave the room to you so you can get cleaned up. I’ll go get us some dinner and
be back in a little bit. Is that okay?” he questioned, knowing that she had
felt very insecure and uneasy
just walking into this inn.
She nodded quickly before saying, “Thank you, again. I’ll
be fine.” After a moments silence she said, “Please be careful out there.” She
didn’t know what kind of town it was, but it had her on edge. It wasn’t like
Central City, or her own familiar country of Japan. There was a current of
uneasiness flowing around her and she wasn’t sure how to shake the feeling.
He smiled brightly at her before saying, “Of course. I’ll
be back soon.” He gave her another glance before he moved out of the door and
closed it behind him. He didn’t know why, but her uneasiness put him on guard
as well. He walked down the stairs and out of the inn towards the town to find
a store. It was cheaper than eating out and he was buying for two. He was
almost positive she didn’t have any money on her, and normally, he would have
wondered about trusting her. Her obvious shyness and even her unusual energy
and mannerisms though, had him wanting to protect her.
Kagome watched as the door closed behind him and she felt
her chest tighten as she realized how alone she was in this room. Quickly, she
shook those melancholy thoughts from her mind as she moved over to the pitcher
of water. There was a small washcloth and even a hard bar of soap beside the
pitcher of water that she hadn’t noticed before. Quickly, she shed Roy’s
overcoat and found a hanger in the open closet to hang it up. It was covered in
sand dust now and she wondered if there were some way
she could get it cleaned later. Shaking her head of the thought, she pulled off
her sweater that Gracia had left for her when she was
in Amestris. Her bra came next and then her pants and
underwear. She spared a glance over at the window in the room and was glad that
the shades were already pulled. In her haste to get clean she had nearly
forgotten that there was a window in the room. She reached forward and poured
some of the water from the pitcher into a shallow basin that was under it. She
touched it and found it to be room temperature, which was just fine with her.
She dipped the small rag into the water and then lathered it up with soap
before she started to wash her face and then the rest of her body. She finished
washing herself, being sure to pay attention to her private regions and her
underarms, which both needed the fragrance of soap for her to feel halfway
normal again. Her hair was in dire need of a wash but there wasn’t enough water
as it was and she wanted to make sure that Vash got to wash up, too.
Looking almost disdainfully at her sand attacked clothes;
she picked up her underwear and bra and put them on first. Then she picked up
her pants first, and flicked them in her hands, like she would with a blanket
or rug to straighten it out. As she did so, sand and dirt came fluttering out
of the cloth and onto the floor. Repeating the motion until she was satisfied,
she put her pants back on before doing the same to her sweater. It wasn’t
ideal, but it was the best solution she could come up with barring her limited
supplies. Feeling semi-normal again, she moved towards the window to peek out
over the town. Just as she went to crack open the curtain, the door opened
behind her and she jumped, before seeing it was Vash. She quickly moved to help
him by opening up the door further and he walked in carrying a sack of what
looked like food, and a box of doughnuts. Her stomach growled at the sight and
she flushed again before she closed the door behind him. “I see you were
successful in your hunt for food. Did everything go alright?” she questioned,
as she took the bag from him to set it on the desk in the room.
He smiled at her and noticed her relaxed demeanor. It
seemed the bath helped ease her nerves and that, in turn, helped him relax. “Yeah,
everything went fine.” He said as he pulled out a doughnut to munch on. A smile
crossed his lips at the familiar taste of the food before he saw her poking
through the food that he’d bought. She found the sandwiches he got and she
picked one of them and what looked like bottled juice before she sat down on
the edge of the bed. The taste wasn’t exactly like food from her own time but
then again, she didn’t know how advanced this civilization was and it was
enough that the food was edible. She happily ate her food before she glanced up
at him. “I’ll leave for a little bit so you can get cleaned up, too. I left you
some water in the pitcher so we don’t have to go find more. The soap doesn’t
smell all that great but it does the job.” She said with a smile as she moved
to place the wrapper and bottle back into the bag, seeing as how there wasn’t a
trash can in the room.
He lifted an eyebrow but he could tell that she wasn’t
comfortable going out on her own. She tried to smile at him and reassure him
that she would be fine but he didn’t feel safe letting her walk around on her
own. He didn’t know why, but he didn’t. Shaking his head, he said, “You can
stay. If you promise not to peek I’m fine washing with you in the room.”
Kagome bit her lower lip before she nodded softly, and
some of that tension eased from around her eyes. “I promise.” She would have
left the room, though she didn’t want to, but his logical suggestion eased her
mind that she wouldn’t have to leave the room. She sat down at the chair that
was in front of the mirrored desk and she looked down at her hands, as if she
were ignoring temptation with focusing on her hands. She heard the buckles on
his jacket start to be undone and she let a breath out of her body that she was
holding in. It wasn’t like she was a virgin or hadn’t seen a man before so she calmed her racing mind with those logical thoughts. There
was no need for her to be so tense. A splash of water startled her as she
quickly looked up from her hands to the mirror. Shock and disbelief registered
on her face as she saw Vash’s back in the smudged reflection of the dirty
mirror. A tinge of horror and utter sadness filled her eyes as she took in each
scar that raced across his pale skin. They stood out like black on white and
she couldn’t help herself as she turned around to look at him. He was busy
washing his arms and chest so he didn’t notice her staring. He wasn’t worried
about her peeking and he was concentrating on his task. He froze as he heard
the tell-tale signs of her footsteps as she walked across the bare wooden
floor. Quickly, he turned, and he saw what were residual
tears in her eyes. The moment her eyes saw the scars that laced his
chest those tears fell silently down her cheeks. What had he been through? Who
would have ever done such a thing to him? Who would put another person through
such pain?
He was shocked, and even, for a moment, he was ashamed
before he looked into her pain-filled eyes. She didn’t pity him, she felt for
him. He didn’t stop her as she stepped closer to him and placed a hand over the
metal that was on his upper chest. Her unspoken question was clear as day in
her eyes. She wanted to know who had done this to him. He wasn’t sure how to
answer her. He didn’t want her to fear him, like everyone else. So far, she had
been a constant surprise to him and he wanted to keep it that way. He wouldn’t
lie to her, though. So he said, “Does the name Vash the Stampede mean anything
to you?” he questioned, looking for the dawning recognition that he thought to
see in her eyes.
It didn’t happen.
Kagome shook her head slowly before she found her voice
and said, “I’m guessing that’s you, but the name itself doesn’t mean anything
to me. Should it?” she asked, as her hand trailed down from the metal over his
chest to a scar that traced down his sternum. Again, her power flared at the
contact. He closed his eyes at the feeling of that gentle touch of her power
over his skin. It felt like it went to his very soul as it caressed him and
attempted to sooth him. His voice was lost for a moment before he replied, “It
should, but if you truly don’t know who I am, or what I’ve done, then I don’t
want to tell you. I’ve done terrible things, Kagome.” Suddenly, he pulled back
from her and wrapped his arms around himself. His eyes filled with a terrible
sadness that Kagome could only attempt to try and understand. “Everyone who
touches me ends up dying.” He said softly, as he looked back to her. He tried
to will her to understand what his life was like but
she didn’t know him, and he wasn’t willing to walk down memory lane with her.
She opened her mouth to say something, but then she
stopped, and let out a breath of air instead. She couldn’t even begin to
understand his pain. He had lost people important to him, like Sango. People
had treated him as an outsider, like Inuyasha. Slowly, she reached up her hands
to place on his arms. He didn’t struggle against her as she brought them down
to his sides, and just as slowly, she drew him forward and she wrapped her arms
around his taller form. He was stiff, and she didn’t know if he would even
accept this comforting gesture from her, but as the seconds passed, he wrapped
his arms around her as well, and drew her close to his bare chest. “I’m sorry.
I’m so sorry.” She whispered softly against his skin as she held him tighter to
her. She didn’t know what else to say. Her power spilled out of her and
blanketed their still forms as it wrapped around them it it’s
comforting embrace. The deep rivets of scars that covered his skin slowly began
to fill and make his skin smooth and whole again.
He heard her whispered apology and he couldn’t help
hugging her tighter. She didn’t know him or anything about him and she was
still apologizing? He couldn’t think of anything to say and before he had a
chance to tell her it wasn’t her fault, he felt her power. Once more, that deep
well of pure, gentle energy rushed to meet his skin. It made him feel weak as
he clung to her. He could feel the pulling of his skin fade in areas as her
power regenerated his skin. His body wasn’t good at regeneration, which is why
there were literally holes in his skin where he’d taken damage. Her power was
filling those holes, both outside his body, and somewhere inside his body, too.
They both stayed silent as the power receded after a
couple of minutes. Continuing to hug one another, Kagome lifted her head from
his warm chest to look him in the eyes. There was such turmoil in the golden
depths of his eyes that she subconsciously reached her hand up to cup his
cheek. For a moment, Vash froze at that gentle touch on his cheek before he
finally allowed himself to relax. He didn’t even allow Meryl to get this close
to him, though he knew that the woman felt something for him. She was
constantly following him around with her friend and he was continuously dodging
them. The biggest reason was because he didn’t want her to get hurt, but
another huge reason was because he was afraid to care for anyone. He’d lost
everyone who ever meant anything to him, including the traveling priest. Knives
had made sure that he hurt for anyone he cared for. He kept reminding him of
the spider and the butterfly and even if it was impossible, Vash still thought
that both deserved saving. He longed for peace, and it had been so long since
he felt at ease that he was tempted to throw Kagome off of him. If he didn’t
know peace, then he couldn’t ache for it like he was right now. Tears stung at
his eyes as he looked into hers, so calm and peaceful and understanding.
Kagome’s expression remained gentle as she moved her hand
to rub a thumb over a tear that made its way down his face. The tear was hot,
and she could almost feel the pain with it as she pushed it away. He was so
tormented, by the past and his life as it was. His eyes were stained with those
memories and she knew that he wasn’t looking at her necessarily. He was lost in
his painful memories, and that made her close her eyes to him. She wanted him
to see her. Not his painful past—she wanted him in this moment, with her. There
was nothing between them. They barely knew one another, but she had something
he needed, and even if he didn’t know it, she was going to give him peace. It
may only be for a few minutes, or a few hours, but she had fought so hard and
so long against Naraku to obtain peace that now that she’d finally found peace
with that particular demon, she was going to offer it to others facing demons
of their own.
As she closed her eyes to him, Vash reached his hand up
from her back to place it on her own cheek, as if silently willing her to open
her eyes to him again. He had lost himself in that quiet, tranquil gaze, even
if it pained him to know a small bit of peace. Kagome opened her eyes at that
touch on her cheek and at the intense look in his eyes, her expression softened
as she leaned in slowly to kiss the heated skin over his heart. He took in a
small gasp of breath at that gentle and tender touch on his skin. He hadn’t
been treated so sweetly by any woman before. He’d had the opportunity to have
whores, and one-night stands, but he’d never had anyone kiss him so gently,
even if it was in a particularly platonic spot.
Kagome trailed her kisses from over his heart to the
healed skin near his sternum as she let her arm drop from his cheek and her
other arm tighten around his tall, muscular form. Everywhere she kissed it
seemed she were breathing her power into his skin, making him feel weak again,
and yet, at the same time, so strong. The tender, but strong power filled him
with a peace he’d never known—the force to be able to withstand anything, and
the knowledge that with that force he would make the right choices in his life.
He was always second guessing himself and always thinking back on his childhood
and his constant struggling with Knives and the lives that they both had been
leading since they lost Rem.
The reason Kagome’s power was able to give him that peace,
was because she had faced those demons before. She was constantly questioning
herself around Inuyasha, and she was always wondering if she was strong enough
to beat Naraku. Her power was often just beyond her reach and she had to fight
with the complex she had with Kikyou, and the ready jealousy she had of the
relationship and feelings that Inuyasha had for her previous incarnation. That
jealousy would often try and take her over at any second. She’d put those
demons to rest and now, she was offering that peace to Vash, if he would only
accept it.
At her gentle kisses on his chest, he reached his hand
down from her cheek to her chin to lift her face up to his again. There was
such passion in her eyes, but there was also a sense of rightness. She knew
what she was doing, and she was comfortable with it. All that was left was for
him to come to peace with this moment, and what he wanted from her. A second
passed, and then two, before he leaned down and captured her lips with his own.
There was fierceness to the kiss, and an uncertainty that lingered just out of
her reach. Kagome pressed her lips against his slightly chapped ones in earnest
as she lifted up her arms from his back to his neck. He wrapped his arms around
her waist and drew her up from the floor, allowing her to wrap her legs around
his waist. Her tongue slipped out from between her lips to touch his, as if
pushing away his hesitation with her enthusiasm. Without thinking, he returned
the gesture as his lips parted and he snaked out his
tongue to meet hers in a ferocious battle. It was as if all of his pain and
anger and pent up frustration came out in that one kiss and Kagome returned it
with a ferociousness of her own as she moaned into the kiss. His hands moved up
underneath her sweater and he found his fingers just below the elastic of her
bra. With a frustrated growl he turned them and barely got them to the edge of
the bed before he knelt down and set her down, long enough for him to draw a
breath of air.
Kagome blinked at the obvious maleness of him before she
looked quickly to his eyes. Hers were dark with unbridled passion as she
reached for him again and he complied as he leaned in and captured her lips in
another fierce kiss. He reached behind her and grabbed at the edge of her pants
and pulled at them. She shifted up just long enough to get him to pull them
over the swell of her ass and down to the floor. Her hands swept up and
entangled themselves in his rather short hair, but there was still enough to
grab as he pushed her back onto the bed, leaving her legs hanging just over the
side. They broke the kiss for air as Kagome reached down and yanked off her
sweater. It made a weak and nearly silent thump against the wall as she tossed
it behind her. Vash’s eyes took on shock and surprise as he saw the bra
underneath her sweater. He hadn’t seen many women naked and he was already
nervous with touching her in such a manner. Slowly, Kagome reached for his
hands and brought them up and behind her so his fingers were touching the clasp
in the back. “Don’t be afraid.” She whispered, as she felt the cloth let go as
he undid the clasp and let it slide forward, releasing her breasts from the
confine that held them in place.
Her softly spoken words of encouragement urged him
forward as he placed his hands over the smooth skin of her back. Gently, and
hesitantly, he trailed his fingertips over her skin to the sloping plane of her
stomach. Kagome had to fight back a small giggle at the tickling sensation of
his fingertips just barely on her skin but when his hands reached up and cupped
her breasts she couldn’t stop the moan of pleasure that came from the back of
her throat. He quickly looked up at her face when she made that sound, afraid
that he’d hurt her, but the look on her face was anything but pain. Urged on by
that look, he flicked his thumbs out to the dust-colored bits of flesh and
watched as she arched up into the touch. Encouraged
further by her non-verbal signals, he leaned forward and captured one of the
growing peaks into his mouth. Kagome let out a shuddering breath as she felt
the warmth of his mouth around her sensitive flesh. When he grazed his teeth
over her hardened nipple, she felt it all the way down to just below her
belly-button. With a gasp, she gripped his hair tighter in her hands, urging
him to do whatever he wanted.
He was astonished by the feel of that incredibly soft
skin in his mouth. It was tempting to bite down on it but he was content with
letting his teeth and tongue work instead of his jaws. After a couple of
minutes of showering her right breast with attention, he switched to the other
one, earning another gasp of pleasure from Kagome’s lips. With growing
confidence, he brought his lips down to her stomach, before he leaned up and
captured her lips again in a fiery kiss. The gentle and tender moment had
passed and now the passion between them ignited into a small inferno as she
reached down between them and grabbed his rapidly swelling member. At the first
touch of her small and soft hand grabbing his most sensitive place, Vash broke
the kiss in a gasp of intense pleasure. He’d never had anyone touch him like
she was touching him now and before he could process everything, he felt
himself being turned and pressed into the firmness of the bed. The stars in his
eyes cleared to find him looking down on Kagome as she practically gyrated down
his body to place her mouth just above his engorged manhood.
He was going to ask her what in the hell she meant to do
when she took him deeply into her mouth and surrounded him with intense heat.
He threw his head back as a cross between a moan and a scream came from his
lips. He’d never experienced anything like this before in his life and it was
just the first of a series of intense sensations that she forced upon him. She sucked,
nibbled, and stroked the tender flesh over and over until he thought he would
be driven mad by the fire she inspired in his veins. “Kagome, Kagome!” he
called out unintentionally as he felt that precipice of agonizing pleasure come
dangerously within reach. Before he knew what was happening, she flung him over
that edge mercilessly as she drew him to the very base of her throat. He thrust
his hips into her and a strangled cry came from his lips as his entire body was
filled with unimaginable pleasure. Kagome, calm as ever, but with eyes of
sparkling mischief, sucked down every drop of his fluids that he gave her. She
slowly and tenderly drew up from his deflating member as she licked off the
remnants of his orgasm and allowed him a few moments to recover from the shocks
that she could visibly see traveling down his arms and legs.
Finally, after the white haze around the corners of his
eyes faded, he was able to lift his head to look at the raven-haired vixen that
was still licking lightly at his thighs and tenderly touching the fragile flesh
at the base of his member. She wasn’t through with him yet, it was clear in her
eyes, and for once, he found that his mind was completely blank of anything or
anyone else but her. His expression, which was so full of passion before, was
now smoldering as he watched her bring him back to fullness. With a smirk, and
a loving glance, she shifted from her position at the side of the bed and made
her way over him, kissing along his sweaty and heated skin as she did so. He
held his breath as she placed small, sweet kisses on his newly healed skin until
she came face-to-face with him. Golden eyes pierced into sapphire as she
completed her movements and placed her lips over his in a growing fervor of
emotion. Again, his mind blanked of everything except for her as she waged a
war with him with her tongue, and her ministrations against his once-more
throbbing member. Her backside pushed back against his erection even as she
darted and played with his tongue and mouth. He could feel himself coming close
again and he gripped his arms around her in an effort to restrain the urge to
come again all over her. She broke the kiss as she drew in a deep draught of
air. She kept her eyes on him as she lifted herself up and reached between her
body and his to grasp his twitching phallus in her hand. Without looking, she
slid back on his body until his member touched her most private area where her
juices were already flowing with her excitement. Slowly, she lowered herself
down over his member and gave herself time to both adjust, and give him the
full sensation of being gripped in the warm, intense heat of her body. The grip
he had around her body tightened and he groaned, his eyes turning impossibly
wide at the sensations racing through his body at the foreign but not unwelcome
contact.
Kagome made a sound from the back of her throat that was
a cross between a laugh and a moan. He filled her so completely that she was
afraid to move for fear of losing that contact but his own minute movements and
her inner walls gripping him as he did so took all thought and feeling out of
her head and straight into her body. Her hands gripped his upper arms as she
slid up his quivering shaft and then slammed herself down in a dangerous motion
that drew two distinct cries of pleasure from her and from him. Vash moved his
arms down from her waist to her thighs as he looked into her heat-filled eyes.
She was looking at him like that.
That deep, almost drowning look was for him and him alone. No one had ever made
him feel like he felt in that moment and without hesitation; he lifted her again
and slammed her down, overwhelming him and her in the process. She wrapped her
arms around his neck and drew herself down to kiss him deeply again even as she
lifted her body up to press herself back down over his center, drawing him
again within her tight, shivering self. That area just below her navel felt
like someone had just hooked electricity up, and it was pumping watt after watt
of power through her. Her arms raised in goose bumps at the cooler air around
them when she felt like she was burning up.
Vash wanted to hear her scream his name,
he wanted to throw her over the edge
of reason as he quickly thrust up into her warm and waiting womanhood with no
reservations. He had come too far in this endeavor and so had she to stop now,
not that either of them would. With his fingernails digging into her creamy
flesh, he used all of his upper body strength and the strength in his legs to
take the pace set to dizzying heights, and with each thrust, Kagome’s cries got
louder, and Vash’s exhilaration at drawing those sounds from her rose just like
his own anticipation of reaching that moment of exquisite pleasure. Kagome
could barely breathe as he thrust deeper and deeper into her, hitting that
secret spot within her body that turned an already wonderful pleasure to just
this side of pain. The invisible coil within her tightened
with each thrust until she couldn’t take it anymore and even then, she was held
back from release until he shifted and arched up into her body. That one
motion sent her spiraling over the top of that growing tenseness and she
screamed his name with reckless abandon, not caring who heard and who knew what
they were doing. “Vash!!” His name on her lips and the
chain reaction that was happening in her body as her tight and soaked inner muscles
clenched him almost painfully were the final straws of his undoing as he cried
out wordlessly and felt himself empty into her awaiting center, bathing himself in her warmth and tightness again.
It felt like an eternity later before Kagome could feel
her own skin again as she clung to him, her body still wrapped around and bound
to his own. She hadn’t realized that he had been
crying silent tears until she looked to his face and found traces of the salty
water flowing down the back of his face. They leaked wordlessly out of the
corners of his eyes, but the expression on his face was anything but pain. He
was at complete peace as he held her in his arms. She slowly regained her
breath, as did he, and she relaxed as he held her in his strong grip. Her eyes
searched the room momentarily for Inuyasha’s sword,
but there were no glowing lights from it, and it’s
silence gave her a chance to close her eyes and truly rest.
Carefully, Vash leaned up and cradled her in his arms as
he disjoined from her and managed to stand them both up. Her eyes met with his
again and he leaned in to tenderly kiss her forehead before she smiled sleepily
at him. His contentment could be felt wrapping around her as her power settled
around them again. He freed one hand so he could push back the covers on the
bed and gently he slipped her above the sheets near the wall, in case anyone
came in the room, and then slipped into bed beside her. Almost instantly, she
scooted closer to him and he encircled her in his arms as she pressed her ear
over his heart. Once more surrounded by her power, and the calm she instilled
in him, he closed his eyes and allowed himself to drift into the first dreamless, and complete sleep that he’d allowed himself
since he was a child.
Kagome watched, and waited for him to fall asleep first
before she let her own heavy eyelids droop. She didn’t know what would happen
next, or where she would end up, if she would end up anywhere, but if she ended
up stuck in this world forever, she didn’t think she’d mind it so terribly
much. The warmth of his body lulled her into a light, but satisfying sleep.
~*~
Morning came too soon for the occupants of the inn room
they’d shared last night. Vash was the first to stir, considering his tendency
to travel from dawn to dusk, and for a few minutes before Kagome awoke, he just
watched her sleep. Her power still surrounded him and he almost allowed himself
to drift back to sleep. He had been granted the peace he so longed for, even if
it were only a moment in time. His grip around her tightened slightly. He
didn’t want to lose her, and he had a feeling that she would be gone soon. After
all, she wasn’t from this world. It was that feeling he had, and the strange
circumstances in which he met her were just extra bits of proof as to where she
was from. The warmth and softness of her breasts pressed against his own warm flesh as if she belonged there. That warmth
chased one worry away and let it be replaced by others. Hesitation flashed
across his eyes as he looked at her still figure. His life was dangerous, and
there were many who hated his existence. She had been one of the few who knew
his name and didn’t fear him. He wasn’t really a bad person, but he was often
dragged into dangerous and uncertain situations and that was no life for her.
If he knew anything about her past he might not have been worrying quite so
much.
At Vash’s tightening grip on her body, Kagome stirred
from sleep and slowly opened her eyes to find the humanoid-typhoon looking at
her with worry in his golden eyes. That worry made her smile weaken as she
asked softly, “What’s wrong?”
He blinked at her question before he smiled and shook his
head. “Just thinking too hard. How did you sleep?” he
asked, as he took in her tousled hair and bright sapphire eyes. She was
beautiful, even just waking up.
Kagome smiled warmer at him before she snuggled into his
arms and replied, “Better than I have in a long time. How
about you?”
He smiled brighter when she drew herself closer into his
arms and answered softly into her ear, “I haven’t slept so well since I was a
kid. You really know how to wear a guy out.” He smirked, teasing her lightly as
she murmured back in good humor, “Well, I got as good as I gave, so I have to
give you credit where credit is due.”
He laughed softly and soon she laughed with him as he
shifted to get up out of bed. It was an undesirable prospect, but he had to go
to the bathroom and he knew that she would probably have to go as well. Moving
with him, Kagome got up and stretched as she placed her feet on the cool wooden
floor. She flushed lightly at her bare-nakedness before she found her bra and
panties flung in various directions of the room. She thought they’d been
careful, but apparently they weren’t. Holding in another blush, she got her breasts
situated under the fabric of her bra but took a moment to wash her lower
regions before she put on her underwear. Feeling generally clean, she glanced
back to the sword, and at its calm and dark silence she put her sweater and
pants back on.
Vash noticed her looking back at the sword setting
against the back of the open-faced closet and he wondered what she was
thinking. Ignoring that nagging feeling that she would be gone soon, he smiled
at her and offered her his hand after he was dressed. “The bathrooms are
downstairs. Do you have to go?”
With a smile and a nod she stood and took his hand as he
led them out of the room and downstairs to the bathrooms. Kagome quickly used
the facilities and washed her hands before moving back out the door where Vash
was already waiting for her. Giving him a sheepish smile, he pulled her close
and asked, “What would you like to do now? I usually am leaving town about this
time. I don’t stay in any one place for too long.” He said, even as a small
frown came to his lips. Being a wanderer was no life for her.
She looked up to his eyes as she saw that worry again and
she reached up to touch the wrinkles that formed between his forehead.
They smoothed under her touch and she smiled before saying, “Then I’ll go with
you.”
He lifted an eyebrow of incredulousness. She couldn’t be
serious?! But the smile and knowing look in her eyes told him more than his own
silent questions. She would go with him to the ends of the Earth if she was
allowed. Smiling brightly, he drew her in for a soft kiss before he walked them
back upstairs and grabbed the bag of food that was left, the rest of his
doughnuts, and she grabbed Inuyasha’s sword and
slipped on Roy’s boots, and his uniform jacket that he’d given her. For a
moment, she felt guilty as she allowed his ready scent to overtake her senses,
but that guilt fled as she held onto the Tetsuseiga.
She didn’t get a choice to stay, and someday she really wanted to go home, but
she’d touched and had been touched deeply by the lives of three wonderful men.
She knew sometime soon that she would leave Vash’s company too, but it would
hurt another piece of her heart. ‘Please’
she prayed softly to whatever gods or goddesses were listening, ‘Please help me be with them. Please help
them understand.’ She didn’t know if the Tetsuseiga
would allow her to keep wandering the lands she’d already visited, but she
hoped and prayed by the end of her journeys that she would be able to see them
again at least one more time, so she could explain everything.
Vash watched as she became quiet when she put on the blue
jacket that she’d had when he first met her and he walked up behind her to
place a comforting arm around her shoulders. The gentle touch got her attention
as she looked up and smiled tenderly to him before she moved to draw herself
into his arms. He readily embraced her as he smiled into her sand-kissed hair
and held her petite form to his taller one. Had he fallen so fast? Apparently
he had. She had worked her way into his heart at the same time she was giving
him the most precious gift he’d ever received: true peace.
Both stayed still and silent for a few moments before
Kagome pulled back first and said, “We’d better get going.” She smiled to him
before picking up the Tetsuseiga and drawing up the
strings through a loop on the jacket to secure it to her person. Both walked
out of the room and down the steps where he returned the key to the inn-keeper
and they walked out of the inn and headed through town to the other side, where
even more sand awaited them. Kagome lifted an eyebrow before she shook her head
and a look of determination formed on her face. Vash almost laughed at the
almost child-like look of stubbornness that was on her face but he refrained.
She wasn’t used to traveling in the desert and he was. Without waiting, he
walked forward, and Kagome followed him, easily picking up his pace to wherever
they would head. They were both silent as they ventured farther and farther out
into the desert and Kagome stole a glance at the ancient sword by her side
every few minutes. It was still quiet. Well, she didn’t know when to expect it
to flare up, after all, she had been in Amestris two weeks or longer before its power came online
for her. Pushing away the thought of being in this desert world for two weeks
or more, she let her eyes travel to Vash. Quietly, she reached out her hand and
took his. She was scared, and he had proved that he would be there for her.
Looking over to her, he couldn’t see her expression for all of her hair hiding
her face, but he squeezed her hand gently and walked with her over the swirling
desert sands. The moment his hand tightened on hers, a brilliant and almost
blinding light came from the end of the sword that Kagome was carrying.
Vash froze as he held up his free hand to protect his
eyes from the light and Kagome quickly looked to his face, her black hair now
blowing in a torrent of darkness behind her. Her sapphire eyes filled with
tears as she smiled warmly to him. “I’m sorry, Vash. I have to go. The Tetsuseiga is calling me.”
He swallowed down tears of his own before he asked, “Will
I ever see you again?”
For a moment, the wind stilled and Kagome looked up into
his eyes. “Someday, I’ll figure out a way to come back. It may not be for
forever, but I’ll find a way back to you. I promise.” And it was a promise she
was vowing to keep. Slowly, she let go of his hand before she drew out the
sword from its sheath. Again, the winds picked up with new voraciousness as
Kagome gripped the hilt of the sword in her hands. She looked back over her
shoulder, and smiled sadly at Vash. A part of her heart and soul cried together
when she sliced down the ancient, magic-filled sword, and vanished into the
glowing portal, ripping her away from the golden-haired man who’d won a piece of herself.
She gripped the sword as she cried torrents of tears that
were lost to the spinning portal that took her to wherever it deemed to take
her.
Quietly, Vash stood there in the stillness of the desert.
The wind had died and gone with Kagome when she disappeared in a flash of light.
Before he realized it, moisture dripped down his cheeks and plopped lightly
onto his jacket. He reached up a hand to wipe them away before he shouted to
the still air, “Kagome!! I’ll be waiting!” his voice softened as he looked
towards the lingering spots of light of his vision. “I’ll be waiting.”
