Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha (obviously). No profit is sought, nor made, from my misadventures in fanfiction, just so ya know. |
A/N: (Prior to editing, 2/15/10) I don't know what's harder: fixing the old material or trying not to go too crazy adding MOAR. o.O I can tell you, however, Unbound is not the most fun story to revisit, ironically because of its lack of seriousness and weak emotional attachment. I mean, it was originally just a way to alleviate boredom, a silly way to pass time… and I can tell. *Sigh* I certainly have my work cut out for me here. DX But, at the same time, where Windcry was where the fine line was drawn between what I was going through emotionally and how it was symbolized in the story, this too mirrors my own strange journey in a way. But that is a whole other tale in itself. Hn, perhaps a new afterword is in order…
Bah, rambling, as per usual. Anyway, for readers old and new, thanks for stopping by! :) Hope you enjoy and, as always, thanks for reading!!
Chapter 3
The white morning cascaded down, the milky sky seeming to touch her skin, the mists she remembered from the day before cool on her face as she opened her sticky eyes. Breakfast was cooking, more fish. Somehow she thought a human diet would be more varied, mouthwatering scents wafting on the wind to where she sat atop her plume when scouting the location of the Inutachi's camp. But there was plenty of food and she wasn't inclined to complain; if Naraku didn't change his mind, this mortal appetite would surely be the death of her.
She lay back in the grass as the morning meal was on its way to digesting, the crown of pinkish lilies Rin had presented to her thereafter lasting barely to midday, the sun wilting its fragile blossoms. Something, or rather someone, obscured her light then, thin strands of silky white tresses tickling her arm, Sesshoumaru's expression hidden in his own shadow as he leaned over her.
"You startled me," she gasped.
"I'm going to have a look around." He straightened his stance, sunlight flashing across her widened eyes. "Make sure you weren't followed."
He moved from view, Kagura sitting up to watch him go, blinking the sunlight from her eyes as his figure drifted from camp. The movement of his form under the folds of his kimono and skirt of his armor intrigued her; what did that body look like underneath all those clothes? He was tall and slim-faced but she did not imagine anything that could be described as scrawny was hidden underneath his garb. I'll bet that ass is perfect, she thought to herself.
She reclined in the cool grass once again, sighing as Sesshoumaru's glorious presence disappeared from sight. Her light was obscured once more, this time by two figures.
"You really care for Lord Sesshoumaru, don't you?" Rin beamed.
"Whatever gave you that idea?" Kagura opened one eye, then the other, the corners of her mouth turning up involuntarily.
"You know, I think he really likes you too."
The former youkai's face stiffened. "What makes you say that?"
"Every time he sees you, he gets very thoughtful and quiet… even more so than usual. He sits looking at the sky for hours, just thinking."
"Really?" Kagura raised an eyebrow. "You noticed that, huh."
"Yeah," the child laughed. "When you left the last time, I told him I thought-"
"Rin, we must get more firewood before our lord returns," Jaken interjected.
"Okay! See you in a little while, Lady Kagura!" Rin smiled, running off into the trees with Jaken in tow.
Kagura smiled up at the sun, folding her hands beneath her head. Lady Kagura. My, that has a nice ring to it…

What are you afraid of, Kagura?
Sesshoumaru became a little frustrated when she only stared, instead of answering what should have been a simple question.
You went to him expecting death and instead he gave you freedom, the full cost of which you are still counting, he had said, But I would hardly be a warrior worthy my reputation if there were anything to fear in my camp. What he really wanted to say, when he scented how afraid she was of him, was that she didn't have to be… that her scent had changed from that which bore her and he kind of liked the feeling of her female aura hanging around… but such thoughts were strange in his head. Not the kind of esteem—of affection—a youkai should hold, especially for a mortal.
But then, what of the urges she sparked within him? And it wasn't the first time either, though never before could he recall desiring someone the way he had when she kissed his palm; to touch her hair, taste her lips, to feel her breath hasten against his skin, her body beneath his on the ground. He didn't really know what to make of these emotions. More, he didn't like them; the loss of control—the near loss of himself. But they came anyway. And, what was worse, the sick feeling which used to fill his stomach at the mere thought of such weakness seemed to be slowly fading with time. Had the human girl changed him so? Made him soft?
I am not my father, he told himself.
He continued canvassing the area around the camp several times over, lost in thought. He was not like his father and brother. He would not fall prey to the charms of a mortal woman. He was much stronger than that. He would not be pinned to a tree, or suffer its equivalent, and he certainly would not lay down his life for that of a hanyou son.
I will not allow myself such an ignoble end.
He approached the calm area of the creek in which Rin had been fishing. A mournful melody echoing from the direction of the water piqued his interest, Sesshoumaru moving stealthily through the branches and foliage to a group of bushes by the water's edge. From this cover, he could see Kagura standing with her back to him in the creek. She appeared to be nude, at least what he could see of her from about mid-torso up, her hair flowing unbound down past her shoulders, the ends floating on the water like small black snakes. He caught a flash of the side of her left breast when she raised her arms to wash her dark tresses in the fresh water, almost prompting him to avert his eyes. Almost. She continued humming, swaying to her own music, whirling in his direction with her eyes closed.
She was oblivious to his presence through another turn, facing him again with her eyes open. Damn, he'd been caught. He thought she might turn away, or scream in surprise at the very least. But she only stood there, the position of her arms lifting her breasts just above the water, hands still in her hair. Her song ended abruptly, mouth left open in a sort of stunned 'o.'
She closed her mouth as he continued staring, dropping her arms into the water with a thin plop. There was that electricity again—that pressure—gathering strength as gold and crimson met. She took two steps toward him and then dunked herself underwater, combing her soggy hair back from her face with her fingers as she rose. Crimson eyes opened in a come-hither look, Sesshoumaru taking his cue… and getting the hell out of there, starting back through the trees without a word.
"I will never understand you," she said just loud enough for him to hear as he departed, "But then again, I hardly understand myself anymore. Maybe I need a human hand in the matter."
He wasn't sure that last part was meant for him, but he took it anyway. He had an idea of what to do with it.

After a long day of learning to fish… and anything else that might put some distance between her and the youkai lord before nightfall… Kagura was not in any mood to be awakened, especially by someone shaking her by the arm. "What?" She opened her eyes, the white blob kneeling before her slowly coming into focus. Before she could think better of asking him what in the hell he wanted, the booms and shouts of two familiar female voices echoing in the distant, wakeful world grabbed her attention.
"I brought you something," Sesshoumaru said, pulling at her arm. "Two things, actually."
"HIRAI-kotsu!" Now that was definitely familiar, as was the thunderous sound approaching. The demon lord closed her in his arm, sweeping her from danger in a flash. Her bed was destroyed, the giant boomerang of youkai bone returning to its master, Sango of InuYasha's group. Ah-Un picked up Rin and Jaken, flying them to safety, Sesshoumaru landing nearby and setting his new ward down beside him.
"Careful, Sango," Kagome called. "Remember that little girl is probably in Sesshoumaru's camp."
"Sorry," the taijiya yelped, "I wasn't thinking."
"What in the seven hells is going on here?" Kagura shrieked, dagger eyes digging at Sesshoumaru.
"I only meant to bring the miko but the demon slayer foolishly followed. I will disarm her if you care to do the explaining."
"Explain what?" It was no use, he was already gone, afterimages his only trace as he unburdened Sango of her weapon, spiriting Hiraikotsu to the far side of camp. Ah-Un landed to stand guard, letting Rin and Jaken down.
Whatever happened, it must have happened fast, both girls looking rather unprepared for battle, Sango in her regular garb and Kagome in a strange-looking sleeping yukata with hakama to match. "Kagura?" Kikyou's reincarnation squinted. "What are you doing here?"
"Not much for long." Sango drew her katana, searching the skin-tight suit beneath her clothes for her vapor mask.
"I could ask you the same thing." Kagura quirked an unafraid brow.
"What are you talking about?" The taijiya scowled above her mask. "Sesshoumaru must have brought us here for a reason!"
The former wind sorceress shrugged, sitting down. "Your guess is as good as mine."
"Wait!" Kagome held back her friend from attacking. "It doesn't seem she wants to hurt us."
"Fine." Sango sheathed her weapon. "But you should know InuYasha and Miroku will be here soon. It won't be pretty when they arrive."
"Look," Kagura began, "the only thing I can think of why Sesshoumaru brought you here is because of some offhanded remark I made."
"About what?" the miko questioned.
"Sit down and I will tell you."
The two girls charily approached, sitting in a circle with the wind user once their enemy, the demon slayer reluctant to remove her mask.
"I'll give you the short version: Naraku, before he exiled me, gave me a human heart in place of my own, purifying me of my powers and leaving me with a slew of other problems… like human emotions and zero control over them. Some of which are misplaced toward Sesshoumaru. Kind of why I'm here, actually."
"So…" Kagome scrunched her face. "You're saying he brought us all the way out here in order to counsel you?"
Kagura shrugged. "Again, your guess is as good as mine."
"Wait a minute." Sango shook her head. "Did you just say you have feelings for Sesshoumaru?"
The former wind sorceress nodded slowly. "So it seems." She found herself looking around for him then, the youkai lord nowhere to be seen… and thankfully so at this point.
"But wait." Kagome waved a hand between her and her friend. "That doesn't seem like such a bad thing. I mean, he does keep that little girl in his camp—protects her. Maybe there's something to Sesshoumaru we don't see."
Kagura shifted, picking at the grass between them. "Well, there was this one thing…"
"What?" both girls blurted simultaneously, looking at each other in amusement as they leaned in.
"Well, last night in fact… We were sitting under the moonlight just sort of… talking."
"Sounds romantic," Kagome blushed, her hands clasped in front of her.
"Yeah maybe." Kagura let out a sardonic laugh, lifting a stray blossom to her nose. "Until he turned away, as if he never had his hand at my cheek," she muttered under her breath.
"You're not the only one with this problem." Sango looked to her friend, barely flinching at the elbow in her side.
"You're one to talk!" the miko glared.
"I just…" Kagura threw her hands up, palms landing on her crossed legs with an audible slap. "What can I do? It's funny, I don't know what scares me more: him never having me, or what may happen if he would. Sesshoumaru doesn't strike me as the sort keen on hanyou children."
Kagome cleared her throat and began going through her pack. "I may have something to remedy that. As a just in case, that is." She retrieved a small flat parcel with characters Kagura didn't recognize stamped across it. If she could read what it said, she would have seen the word durex in bold letters as the girl held it up for her to see. "If you wish to pursue Sesshoumaru… and you actually get somewhere with him… you could have him use one of these. I brought them back with me a while ago when I thought things were moving forward with InuYasha. I don't suppose I'll have the opportunity to use them before they expire the way we go back and forth."
"What strange and colorful vegetation." Kagura tilted her head curiously. "How does it work? Is it some sort of love charm?"
"Sort of," Kagome blushed. "If you should ever get so close to Sesshoumaru that you might take it to the next level…" She cleared her throat again, looking around as if to see if anyone was listening in. "If your sexual attraction is mutual, then you use this to…" She paused as her eyes fell on Rin where she sat by Ah-Un and Jaken. "… prevent him from sowing his seed, if you get my drift."
Kagura wrinkled her nose. "And how does it do that?"
"Well, Sesshoumaru would put this on his… on his…" Chocolaty brown lifted to crimson, staring blankly. "On his… sword. And then, it's safe." Kagome opened the wrapper, demonstrating on her hand how to apply the charm. "See?"
"So…" Kagura continued scrunching her face. "Which sword does he put it on, Toukijin or Tenseiga?"
"No, you don't understand. His other sword," the girl winked, her friend appearing appalled at her behavior. She discarded the stretchy vegetation she had rolled onto her fingers, what she meant sinking in just then, leaving Kagura with her mouth hanging open in a mixture of realization and shock at her own thick-headedness.
"I think I understand how this piece of vegetation works. Thank you, Kagome," she smiled, tucking the durexes inside the front of her kimono.
"WIND SCAR!" The ground rumbled beneath them, putting an abrupt end to their conversation. An errant fissure tore toward them, its light blinding as they threw themselves out of the way.
"Oh no, InuYasha!" Sango shrieked.
"Wait, InuYasha!" Kagome cried, spitting dirt. "STOP!"
"Kagome!" InuYasha growled, clashing swords with his brother. "I'll kill you for this, Sesshoumaru. WIND SCAR!"
Sesshoumaru darted about, fending of his hanyou brother's attacks with minimal effort. Ah-Un took Rin and Jaken out of harm's way again, the mossy tree by which Kagura had felt so close to Sesshoumaru destroyed in a booming blast.
"InuYasha, SIT BOY!" the miko screeched.
InuYasha was instantly face-planted into the ground, Sesshoumaru leaning on his sword before him. "If your discussion is adjourned," he said evenly, addressing the girls, "perhaps you could remove the cur from my camp." He replaced Toukijin through his obi, taking his time returning Hiraikotsu to its rightful owner. Kagome and Sango looked at each other, and then at Kagura, the wind user smiling sheepishly. The two girls helped InuYasha to his feet, dragging him out of the all but obliterated camp, the hanyou's grumbling and shouting slowly diminishing in the darkness. Kagura turned as Ah-Un alighted on the ground once more, finding Sesshoumaru standing by the smoking fissure that had been his tree, his hand gathered in a fist at his side.
He frowned at the smoldering ruins before him. How did everything come to this? This… humiliation?
Ridiculous. My camp destroyed by my ignorant half-brother… and all for this woman.
He could sense Kagura coming up behind him, feeling such anger he wanted to turn and rip her to shreds with his poison claws. Just cut her right down the middle and watch each half fall in opposing directions, her guts spilling out between them. Was that too harsh? For the destruction of his camp, maybe. After all, it had been his decision to bring the girls who had lured InuYasha and his pesky Wind Scar to their location. But for the humiliation of the whole state of affairs, that was grounds for execution.
He tasted the air for Kagura's position behind him, soon realizing she had stopped so that, if he did turn in attack, she would be just out of his immediate reach. Does the wench read minds?
"Sesshoumaru…" She hesitated, head lowered unseen. "I'm sorry."
"We need to move camp." He turned, dagger eyes of his own piercing her. "This place is no longer suitable."
"Fair enough." She smoothed her clothes, raising her head, patting dirt from her pretty layers. "Where shall we go?"
"The wooded area by the stream," he said, turning. "I'm sure you are familiar with the place. You seemed well acquainted with it earlier. Rin, Jaken, gather any items you care for. Guide Ah-Un, we're going."
"Yes, my lord!" the child answered for them both.
(000000)
Sesshoumaru sat on a log by the water's edge, settling his gaze on the trees that lined the other side of the stream. This was as good a place as any, the soil on which their new camp sat soft yet well packed, the arbor and other foliage providing some shelter, no bugs beyond the grassy area in front of the bank. He couldn't help letting his eyes drift down to the water, picturing Kagura's song and dance, the way the ends of her hair floated like little black serpents on the surface of the water, that feeling he dreaded returning down below.
She had to know what she was doing. She lured me like a sea-nymph.
He turned to look behind him. Jaken and Rin had fallen asleep by the new campfire. Kagura lay staring up at the sky. He turned his face forward again. She was probably waiting for him to ask her what she and InuYasha's friends talked about. Like he cared… Or did he? It was him that brought them to her aid after all.
It may have appeared to be a kindness—a favor even—but I only did it so that Kagura might more quickly learn to deal with her humanity and leave… for good this time. I can no longer tolerate this distraction, this feeling. "This weakness."
"Sesshoumaru?" she breathed from where she lay, raising her head.
"Go to sleep, Kagura." He didn't bother whispering. His camp had already been disrupted beyond repair… and he was not about to temper himself, especially for the sake of his party.
She offered no reply, but that didn't mean she did as he commanded, never one for taking orders. Why would she start now? He turned again, finding Kagura on her side, her body kind of crumpled, crimson scrutiny fixed firmly on him. He sat sideways on the log, more easily able to view and address her.
"Can't sleep?" Though the question was thoughtful, his voice gave it a matter-of-fact, disinterested quality.
"Apparently not," she sighed, sitting up. "Are you calmed down enough to tolerate some company?"
Sesshoumaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Gods, that woman had a one-track mind.
"Sesshoumaru?"
"As you please." He whirled toward the water, his long hair whipping his shoulder as he turned.
Kagura got to her feet, padding softly over to the log. She warily planted her bottom on its rough surface, leaving a fair amount of space between herself and the dog demon.
She sat staring at the stream for what seemed like forever before finally succumbing to the urge to speak. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" he asked flatly, still facing forward.
She lowered her head, kicking pebbles from in front of the log. "For tonight. For last night. For my imposition in general."
His claws drummed on the log between him and the irksome woman, her eyes felt for a moment or two, Kagura hanging her head again with a sigh. She stood from the log, walking along the water's edge to a tree whose branches stretched over the its glimmering face, reaching for a branch. Fingers tracing the edges of the leaves, she watched how they moved in the breeze, her gaze falling to the surface of the water, the same zephyr rippling it gently. A hand fell upon her shoulder and she turned, Sesshoumaru standing behind her, gold eyes connecting with hers with a softness she'd never seen… from anyone.
"It does you no good to miss it."
She knit her brows at him. "Miss what?"
"The wind."
It was she that turned her back on him this time. "You don't understand," she breathed, shaking her head.
"Still, thinking about it won't bring it back."
"What does it matter to you?" Kagura turned again, glaring at him with tear-brimmed eyes.
His own narrowed. "It doesn't."
Sesshoumaru returned to his place on the log, continuing to stare at the horizon. Kagura leaned back against the tree, her breath catching, eventually sliding down to the ground, landing hard on her rump. She hugged her knees, face buried between them, the same little jerks whelming her figure that shook her when she cried herself to sleep the night before. He did his best to ignore her sniffling, the breeze unable to drown out her tears, as was the snoring of his sleeping companions… and he to tear his mind away from her obvious pain. She was alone and he… well he was all she had left in the world. All she ever had, even as only a hope. He stood with a sigh, approaching her huddled form.
"Kagura." He touched her bare foot, sending a jolt through her willowy frame. She pulled her hands from her face, wide crimson eyes meeting his as he moved next to her, wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders.
He cleared his throat. "Better?"
"Yeah," she sniffed, wiping her face, her head laid at his shoulder.
He rested his head against the tree behind them, Kagura slowly sliding her arms around the daiyoukai, head nestled in the fluff of the mokomoko. Sesshoumaru observed the moon's passage across the twinkling sky, the former wind sorceress embracing him still as shades of orange swelled from the east.
