Chapter – 3 When I wake up, I don’t remember where I am. All I know is that I’m warm and something is thumping loudly right next to my ear. Thump thump. Thump thump. A heartbeat? I open my eyes and find that I’m in someone’s arms. I look up into his face, he notices and smiles down at me. He’s kidnapped me. He’s going to make me his personal slave. No. If he’s going to take me away from that horrible village, I’m going to be free. I snarl and lash out toward his face. He calmly grabs my wrist and stops running. It’s only when he stops do I realize we were moving in the first place. I grit my teeth and lunge at him with my other hand. He doesn’t stop me this time and I get a good swipe across his face, leaving three long scratches across the blue scars already present on his cheek. He sets me down as I still try to rip him apart. He grabs my wrists and holds me down, making me struggle even more. He’s so strong, and I know I’m too weak. I feel the little strength I have draining away as I continue to struggle. Finally I give up; he’s not letting go. I’ll just have to try to sneak away if he gives me the opportunity. But who am I kidding? This demon is so powerful; I’m lucky he hasn’t killed me already. Maybe he’ll be a kinder master, though I shouldn’t raise my hopes. “Listen,” he says softly. I don’t look at him. “I’m not going to hurt you, ok? In fact, if you really want to leave, leave. But don’t expect to survive long in these woods.” I listen to him and risk a glance. He’s staring back at me with a look of concern and says, “Do you remember? I got you out of that place because you don’t belong there. You belong with me and my pack,” he tells me. It vaguely comes back to me; the horrid punishment, the demons… it’s all just a blur after that. Did he save me? Only for himself I’m sure. I growl low in my throat, I won’t trust him. He sighs, “I want to help you, ok? You know I’m a demon, can you sense what kind of demon? I’m the same as you. Inu. You’re an Inu demon, do you know that? A dog demon. And you’re one of a long line of some of the most powerful Inu ever to exist. My pack, our pack. I’m taking you home.” I don’t understand what he’s telling me. Inu? Does he think I’m a full demon? He can’t smell the stench of human in me? “It’s ok,” he continues, softer now, and slowly reaches for me. I recoil, his extremely strong demon energy makes me nervous. But he’s patient, “That’s my kimono you have wrapped around you. I let you scratch me because I didn’t want to drop you. I don’t want to make you mine, I want to give you back the status and honor you’ve been deprived of. Please, at least trust me enough to know I’m going to treat you well.” I look down at the fine fabric wrapped around me and realize that it is, indeed, a very fine kimono fit for a much larger man. I look back up at him and he smiles gently. What is it with this demon? Why is he being so nice? He reaches toward me once more and I don’t shy away. He picks me up again, pulling his kimono tighter around me and holds me close as he takes off again. Maybe he really doesn’t realize that I’m a hanyou. I lean into his chest and listen to that incredibly strong heartbeat again. I guess if he really doesn’t know, its best to keep it that way. He probably won’t be very kind when he realizes what I am. I wake up again, feeling a moment of panic when I hear a deep male voice. “Wake up now, we’re here. You have to wake up,” Then I remember. The demon, the kind one who says he’s saved me. I look around and see that we’re at the entrance to a grand palace. It’s so big I can’t really wrap my exhausted mind around it. “We’re at my father’s house. I’m going to introduce you to him. He’s waiting for us in his rooms.” I look up at the demon, fear piercing me. I think he sees my fear because his arms tighten protectively around me. “It’s ok, my father will see that you are one of us. He will give you back what you have lost.” I gulp as he carries me into the palace. The well lit entrance hall burns my eyes so I bury my face in the demon’s chest. He holds me close and races through the palace, moving up to the second floor and stopping at a big wooden door in a matter of seconds. The demon carefully sets me down and continues to support me when my legs tremble. I’m so weak it’s pathetic. “Here we go,” he says softly, “Just be polite, my father will take care of his own.” I’m very nervous as he nocks on the door twice then opens it and leads me in. The demon inside is standing with his back to us, staring out of a large picture window. When we enter he turns and faces us and I nearly collapse from the raw power emanating from him. He looks something like his son, with the two scars on each cheek and the crescent moon on his forehead. They’re just different colors. He’s taller then his son, whether from age or just naturally I’m not sure. But his eyes are where most of the difference lies. The demon lord looks me over, his narrow gaze cold and scrutinizing. Their yellow gold carries no kindness, only a terrifying power. I tremble as he looks me over, and can’t relax even when that hard gaze turns to his son. “My lord Sesshomaru, father,” the younger demon says, bowing to his father. “Katsuro, what have you brought me?” the Lord Sesshomaru asks, his voice lower than his son’s; Katsuro. “She is one of us father. I have rescued a lost member of our pack,” he says, though he sounds slightly unsure now. I don’t look at the demon lord, but I feel his eyes on me again. It’s almost unbearable. “This is no pack member of ours,” he says, bitterness underlying his tone. “Wh – What are you saying father? She’s Inu, I can smell it as plain as I can see her standing before us.” “You are foolish Katsuro. Is your nose truly that weak?” I sense his pride flaring up at the insult. This is going bad. He knows what I am. Katsuro may have not known, but this ancient demon lord knows. The lord continues, “Can you not smell the human in her?” “I smell the human on her. I rescued her from a horrid torture. It seemed every man in the village had had his way with her. Of course she will smell of human.” “I’m not talking about that smell. I’m talking about the human inside of her, the human blood that runs through her veins.” Oh no. No, no, no. Of course he would know. Now I’ll be lucky if he lets me live. I feel the shock rolling off of Katsuro. “But… father, that would mean… I don’t understand,” he stutters out. “She is a hanyou, Katsuro. Half demon, half human. She can never be one of us.” Seconds pass as my stomach churns. I think my vision is blurry, I might even pass out. Maybe they’ll kill me when I’m unconscious, hopefully they’ll show me that kindness. “Father what are you talking about? I still don’t understand,” Katsuro says. The lord sighs heavily, “I’ve tried to keep you ignorant to the existence of these things. It was the best way to protect you.” “Protect me?” Katsuro says indigently. “But I suppose there’s no hiding it now that you’ve rooted one out yourself,” he continues as if his son hadn’t spoken. “But they cannot be aloud to live. They’re unnatural.” I feel bile rise in my throat and tears prick my eyes; this really is it. But Katsuro is astonished, “Father! That – that can’t be true, she’s one of us!” “Listen to me son,” the lord says and his tone pulls Katsuro up short. I didn’t sense any fear for his father before, but now there’s the smallest tendril. “Humans are weak and useless but hanyou are worse. They are sad excuses for demons. Demon blood is wasted on them, tainted forever by their one human parent. She belongs neither in the world of humans nor demons. She is an outcast, reject, useless and weak.” “No, that can’t be father,” “I wouldn’t lie to you. It would be kinder to put her out of her sad existence.” I feel shock still pulsing from Katsuro. He must slowly be starting to hate me. This great demon before us, his own father, knows what I am and is planning to be kind and kill me. Hopefully quickly. But Katsuro suddenly moves around to face me, bending over so we’re eye to eye. The look on his face is urgent as he says to me, “Do you want to die? Do you want us to kill you?” I swallow and look at him wide-eyed. Do I want to die? What kind of question is that? I don’t really have a choice, do I? He rests his large hands on my shoulders, “Do you want to die? Please, just answer,” he says. A few moments pass, and then I slowly shake my head no. I don’t want to die. I don’t have a choice, but it’s not what I want. A glint shows in Katsuro’s eye and I’m not sure what it means. He turns back to his father, “She doesn’t want to die. We can’t murder her.” “It’s not murder when it’s hanyou,” “Father!” “You have no idea what she is son,” “I know enough! I will not let you kill one of our pack even if only half of her is demon. She still has our blood. That’s enough for me,” he says, standing before me protectively. I can’t believe it. He still cares for me even though he knows what I am. Why? “Katsuro,” his father says in warning. “Let her prove herself. Give me a day to prepare her for a test of your choosing, and we will see if she truly is a disgrace to our bloodline,” Katsuro proposes. His father glares at him for a moment, then turns back to the window, his back stiff, “Very well. You will know the details of the test within the hour. She will perform my test at this time tomorrow. Now leave,” Katsuro takes my arm and nearly drags me out of the room and slams the door behind him. He takes me to another corridor of the palace and leads me to another room which is just as grand as the lord’s own quarters. He closes the door behind us and looks back at me for a long moment. I can’t take much more and before I can stop it my legs finally give out. He’s there before I hit the floor, cradling me in his arms. “This is my room. You’ll be safer here,” he says softly. He carefully picks me up and carries me to the enormous bed. My head is dizzy as he sets me down gently; I’m about to pass out again. He sits at the edge of the bed and watches me for a minute, then finally speaks, “I’m sorry about my father. I didn’t realize… I didn’t know that you…” he sighs in frustration, then his tone softens suddenly as I close my eyes and pull his kimono closer. “I will talk to you more in the morning. For now you can sleep in peace. Nothing will happen to you tonight, I won’t let anything happen to you.” I don’t believe him, but I’m too exhausted to do anything else. He might have said more but I can’t recall as I finally fall into blissful unconsciousness.
