Disclaimer: I, in no way shape or form, own anything associated with the Inuyasha franchise. I make no money from this story; it is merely a work of fiction I have written to entertain myself and other fans of this amazing series. |
Before I begin, I just want to apologize for taking so long to update and to thank everyone that has read and reviewed the story. To everyone who hasn’t reviewed, I ask that you do because I greatly appreciate any input that you could possibly give me. I am grateful that you chose my story to read out of all of the other stories, but if I don’t know what you think, how can I make the story better?
That being said, this chapter is kind of long, and goes over an important part of the story that we are ALL familiar with, so if you don’t want to read it, I suggest you skip that part.

Chapter 3:
As InuYasha made his way back to the village, he could smell Rin’s worried scent coming to meet him. Great. I tell those villagers to keep her IN the village, and what do they do? Completely ignore me and let her leave anyway. Oh, well. I should’ve known better than to try and keep any information about Sesshomaru hidden from her.
“Where is he? Where is Lord Sesshomaru?” She didn’t even bother to wait to reach InuYasha before pumping him for information.
Inuyasha hung his head, and then slowly raised it until his eyes met with Rin’s. “Go back to the hut,” he said, with a slightly menacing tone.
Rin’s face became indignant. “What do you mean, go back? I want you to answer my question. Where is my Lor-“ She never got the chance to finish the sentence because Inuyasha had made his way toward and grabbed her wrist in a painful grip. She tried to pull away, but his grip was too strong. It felt like he would crush her wrist in his bare hand. She continued to try and pull her hand from Inuyasha’s grip until she looked at his face and saw the look in his eyes. It scared her so bad that she instantly stopped moving and became rooted to the spot she was standing in.
The look she saw was one of both anger and confusion. She didn’t understand why he was angry, and she certainly couldn’t understand why he was confused. She watched him closely as he spoke. “Your precious Lord Sesshomaru is alive. He is badly hurt, but he is alive. Now that you know this, why don’t you go back to the hut like I told you?”
“You said that he was hurt, how bad is-“
“I’m not going to tell you again. Turn your ass around and make your way back to that goddamn hut before I rip your fucking arm off dragging you back. It’s been a long night, I am tired, and I need some sleep.”
Rin realized that Inuyasha was not in a mood where he could be reasoned with, a conclusion that she reached every time she heard him use the word “fuck.” He rarely used that word ever since his daughter was born, and when he did, it was obvious that he was upset beyond reasoning.
She lowered her eyes, showing a state of submission, which put Inuyasha at ease. He let her go, and she promptly turned and ran toward the hut. Inuyasha followed her at a slow pace, his mind still loaded with thoughts of who could’ve hurt Sesshomaru so badly.
As he entered the hut, he was still deep in thought. So deep, in fact, that he didn’t notice Kaede pulling on his clothes until she began slapping her hand against her knee. He looked down at her and said, “What’s up, kid?”
“What is going on? First Rin starts ignoring me, now you. What’s going on, Papa? Who is this demon that everyone’s so concerned with?”
Inuyasha knelt down beside his daughter and placed his hand on her shoulder. He relaxed the look and his face, looked his daughter in the eyes, and said “He’s nobody. He’s not important, sweetie. So you don’t have to worry about him, okay?” Just as the words escaped his lips, Inuyasha got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. His prediction was answered by Rin’s voice screaming the words, “He is somebody, and he is important! He’s important to me, and I won’t stand here and listen to you insult him like that!”
Inuyasha sighed and turned to look at Rin. The girl was irate, he could see, but that didn’t give her any excuse to yell at him like that. He made his way toward her and looked her dead in the eye. Rin didn’t back down. She stood right there, matching Inuyasha glare for glare. Unfortunately, this meant she wasn’t paying any attention to his hands, so she didn’t notice when Inuyasha’s fist sank itself deep into her stomach. The sudden expulsion of air from her lungs came unexpectedly, and though she tried to gasp for air, she was unable to overcome the darkness that was beginning to surround her. She could only look up at Inuyasha as she fell down, down, down…

Kaede looked on, as Rin stared her papa down, looking at him with a look almost as fierce as the one he was giving her. Then, she saw her dad’s hand fly up and into Rin’s stomach. Rin doubled over, gasping for air, before finally passing out. Kaede watched her dad, as he caught the unconscious girl and dragged her over to a corner. After leaning her against the wall, he made his way over to her and said, “Well, it’s time for you to go to bed, kid.”
“Okay,” she said, “But I want to know who that demon was, daddy, and I wanna know why Rin got so mad at you.”
Once again, Inuyasha looked at Kagome, who was cleaning off Jaken’s wounds. She looked up at Inuyasha, who had a puzzled look on his face. “She needs to know who she is and where she comes from, Inuyasha.”
Her father sighed, then made his way to her once more and picked her up. Carrying her out of the hut, he made his way to his favorite tree and jumped straight up. He grabbed the nearest branch with one hand, and then pulled himself up, hooking his arm around it. Kaede grabbed the branch and pulled herself up, settling down on the branch with a leg on either side. With his hand now free, Inuyasha grabbed the branch with his other hand and pulled himself up, choosing to sit with both of his legs on one side. He then picked up Kaede and sat her on his lap. He clutched her tight, and sat there quietly for a while, before turning his gaze to the moon in the sky.
Kaede rarely saw her father act like this. It must’ve been something important he had to tell her; because that was the only way she was allowed up there. Her legs weren’t strong enough for her to leap high enough to get a good grip on the tree. The last time she tried on her own, she missed the branch completely. In addition, her reflexes weren’t sharp enough, so she wound up landing on her back. Hard. From that day on, she was no longer allowed to go up in the tree on her own. Only her father was allowed to take her up there, and he only did that when there was something important that he wanted her to know.
“Kaede, you know your mom’s going to have a baby?”
“Yeah.”
“And when that baby is born, that means that you’re going to have a new brother or sister, right?”
Kaede frowned. “Yeah.”
“Now, you know that there are going to be times where you and your brother-“
“Sister.”
“Sorry-uh-sister, disagree, right?”
“Yeah.” Kaede was confused. Why is Daddy asking me these weird questions?
“The reason I’m asking you these questions is because even though you and your bro-sorry-sister are the same, you’re both different. You both have some demonic blood, but you both will be different people. You’ll look at and think about things differently.”
Kaede raised her eyebrow. “Okay.”
“But, even though the two of you disagree, you will always make up, right?”
Kaede thought for a while, and then said, “Yeah.”
“And why will you forgive her?”
“Because she’s my sister. Duh.”
Inuyasha shifted his gaze back toward the moon. “But what if the two of you were completely different? What if she were human instead of part-demon, like you?”
Kaede thought for a little bit more, and then said, “That won’t matter. She’ll still be my sister.”
Inuyasha smiled at his daughter. “Good answer.”
Kaede smiled. She was glad that she had given her dad a satisfactory answer, but she couldn’t help wondering why her dad was acting like this. “What does this have to do with that demon that the villagers found, Papa?”
There was a pause. “He’s my brother.”
Kaede did a double take. “Your brother? You never told me you had a brother.”
Her dad looked at her with a serious look. “Well, I do, and unfortunately, he’s not as forgiving as you.”
“What do you mean?”
Once again, her dad’s gaze went to look at the moon. “My father, your grandfather, the Inu No Taisho, was a powerful demon. He was so strong that he claimed the entire western lands as his territory, and before he died, he had two sons.”
“The older of his two sons was a full-blooded demon named Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru was a ruthless, unforgiving demon, who saw all humans as beneath him and sought to become a more powerful demon. For a long time, Sesshomaru was the Inu No Taisho’s only son. But then everything changed, when he met my mother and fell in love.”
Kaede looked at her father with eyes full of wonder. “He fell in love with your mother? What happened next?”
Inuyasha chuckled. “Well, not too long after that, I was conceived.” He paused. “Your grandfather did his best to protect my mother until the very end, but unfortunately, the night I was born, he died from wounds that he had received in battle against a demon he had fought earlier that day. Sesshomaru blamed my mother for our father’s death, claiming that she made him weak. Naturally, because I was her son, his hatred was extended to me as well.”
Kaede frowned again. “But you were his father’s son, which meant that you were his brother. How could he hate you, his own brother?”
“Sesshomaru accepted the fact that I was his brother, but that didn’t make him like me anymore than he already did. If anything, it made him hate me even more, because it meant he had to accept me, because I was our father’s son. I think that was the one thing that he hated, was being forced to accept me. He never did anything for me, even after my mother died, and when I came of age, he went out of his way to try and kill me.”
His daughter gasped. “He tried to kill you?!”
“Yeah. He was searching for our father’s sword, the Tessaiga. You see, our old man had two swords, Tessaiga and Tenseiga. The Tessaiga is a mighty sword that can cut down a hundred demons in one swing. On the other hand, the Tenseiga was a dull blade that could heal 100 souls in one swing and bring someone back from the dead. When he died, the old man gave Sesshomaru the Tenseiga, and took the other sword with him to the border between the world of the living and the underworld.”
“Not too long after I met your mother and we began our search for the jewel shards, we ran into him. He had discovered where our old man had hidden the entrance to his grave.”
Kaede had been listening to her father’s story with great intensity. “Where?”
Her father pointed at his right eye. “Behind this eye. I don’t know how, but your grandfather hid a Black Pearl behind my right eye, a Pearl that could open the portal between this world and the next.”
“What happened then?”
“Well, he went through the portal to the other side, and your mother and I followed him. Once there, he found the sword, but discovered he couldn’t use it.”
“Why not?”
“Your grandfather had placed a barrier around the sword to keep full-blooded demons from wielding it. Plus, the sword’s true form will only be revealed when the person has a desire to keep humans safe from harm. Because of that, I was able to use the sword and defeat him. That didn’t stop him from trying to take it later on, but it did cost him an arm.”
“Oooooh. You cut his arm off? That’s nasty, Daddy.”
“Well, if I hadn’t, he’d have killed your mother and me and then you wouldn’t be here.”
Kaede stopped for a moment to think, then nodded her head in agreement. “Yeah, you’re right. But what does any of that have to do with Rin?”
“Well, you know the story about how Rin’s parents died and she had to live on her own, right?”
“Yeah, she tells me about it all the time.”
“Well, while Rin was living on her own, she found Sesshomaru in the woods, wounded from a battle he’d had with me. She tried to help and he tried to tell her that he didn’t accept human help, but she didn’t listen. She kept trying to help him. Anyway, he was all healed and was going to leave. That same day, her village was attacked by a pack of wolf demons. They killed everyone in the village and chased her down as well.”
“Oh, no…”
“They caught up to her and…, well you get it. Anyway, Sesshomaru smelled her blood and found her corpse. For some reason, he couldn’t turn away and leave her there. Son he took out Tenseiga and saved her, brought her back to life. She’s been loyal to him ever since.”
Kaede bowed her head. “So that’s what Mama meant when she said Rin owed the demons a great debt.” A puzzled look graced her face again. “So who’s that small green demon that Rin brought home?”
“That’s Jaken, Sesshomaru’s vassal. He’s just as loyal to, if not more loyal to Sesshomaru than Rin is, and that’s saying something.”
The two of them had been so engrossed in Inuyasha’s story that neither of them had noticed the sun coming over the horizon. Once it made its way into the sky, Inuyasha looked at Kaede and said, “Now you know why I didn’t want to talk to you about that demon. A lot of bad memories come to mind when I think about him.”
Kaede wrapped her arms around her father’s chest. “Don’t worry, Papa. You’ve got me and Mama and the babe and everyone else. You don’t need him.” She looked up at him with a smile in her face and a gleam in her eyes. “And I promise, no matter what, that I will always love and protect my sisters.” Then, as an afterthought, she added, “My brothers, too.”
Inuyasha looked at her and beamed with pride. It was as though the sun had warmed him from the inside out. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Clutching her tight, he pushed himself off of the branch, landing on his feet. He shook off the dust and made his way to the hut. As he walked, carrying his six-year-old daughter, he felt happier than he’d ever felt before.
Sesshomaru was hurt and injured, that still remained. But for now, he was happy with the way things were.
