Chapter 3 - Hangover
Inuyasha tried to position Kagome so that the canopy overhead shaded her eyes, blocking out as much morning light as possible. He wanted to let her sleep in for however long her body needed to rest. Unfortunately, an unconscious twist of his ear suddenly brought to him the sounds of activity in the village, which meant that everyone back at Kaede's was probably awake by now and would start to wonder where the two of them had gone. Again taking a moment to weigh his options, he decided that waking Kagome now would be the lesser of two evils. Surely she would rather have time to finish getting dressed and run her hands through her hair, greeting her friends as the two of them made their return to Kaede's looking as normal as could be under the circumstances, rather than staying in his arms up in the trees until Miroku and Sango's voices calling out for them as they formed a search party meant they risked being spotted in their present embrace, and her present state of undress. It was with that final and unappealing thought in mind that Inuyasha shifted his precious cargo, propping her up into more of a sitting position, while being sure his suikan remained wrapped securely around her body. "Kagome..." he murmured gently. "Time to get up." At the sound of his voice, the girl in his arms began to stir slowly, stretching slightly as she yawned, opening her eyes only to be startled into full wakefulness by an unexpected set of golden orbs gazing back down at her from less than two feet away. "Inuyasha!" she squeaked in surprise, earning an amused chuckle from the hanyou who wrapped his arms around her a little tighter to make sure she didn't fall. "Come on, I'll help you down. The others will probably start looking for us soon." "Help...down...others..." Taking a breath, she met his eyes hesitantly. "Inuyasha?" Glancing around, Kagome felt dizzy and disoriented, as if slowly clawing her way out of a thick fog. Though she had never been drunk before in her life, and didn't recall consuming any alcohol the night before, a fleeting thought flashed through her mind as her head spun that she could sympathize with all the throngs of people who always felt like crap after a night of partying. Her head was pounding, and if she didn't have enough sense about her to at least remember what century she was currently in, she would have told Inuyasha to turn off the light. The thought of sarcastially asking him to turn down the sun briefly popped into her mind, but then as her eyes focused more clearly on her surroundings, a more pressing matter suddenly required her immediate attention. "Why...why are we in a tree?" "I thought it would be best to bring you here, to let you sleep it off away from the village so that nobody would see us." he answered truthfully. His comment about her sleeping 'it off' didn't register in her still half-asleep state, as she slowly shook her head while desperately trying to piece together fragments of what felt like a dream. "But...why?" Shifting forward some to twist her body around so that she could better face Inuyasha directly, her suikan blanket accidentally shifted position during the maneuver enough to yank it down past her chest, exposing her bare breasts. Faster than even he could react with his youkai abilities Kagome let out a horrified shriek and yanked the jacket back up over herself, earning a quiet chuckle from the man who continued to hold her sides so that she wouldn't fall out of the tree. "That's why," he answered playfully, adding, "And that's also why I woke you, so we could get down from this tree while there's no one around." Feeling brave since she hadn't started yelling at him yet, Inuyasha leaned forward to gently kiss her lips, but Kagome, still desperately trying to wrap her mind around whatever had happened, instinctively flinched away in surprise at the unexpected action. In her current confusion and growing panic, she failed to notice the hurt and worried expression that flashed across his face as he pulled back. Suddenly, with eyes hardened by determination and a need for answers now, she turned to glare at Inuyasha, demanding in a quiet but forceful tone, "What happened last night?" His eyes opened wide in instant panic, and this time the look did not go unnoticed by the miko who was staring right at him. She doesn't REMEMBER?! Fuck! I knew she had to be under some sort of a spell. Damn it! Berating himself, Inuyasha missed the look of equal shock and slow contemplation that spread in Kagome's eyes as he pinched his own shut, unable to meet her gaze as he continued to curse his own stupidity. While he had silently prayed that she would wake up perhaps a little embarrassed but otherwise with reassurance for him that last night had not been a mistake and that she loved him, he had been mentally preparing himself for what he'd figured would be the worst case scenario. He had been prepared for Kagome to hate him, to call him a hentai and accuse him of taking advantage of her, to which he would have attempted to counter by confessing his genuine feelings for her, explaining the mate mark and telling her how last night had been the best night of his life, and not for perverted reasons. The possibility of Kagome having no memory of the night before had never entered into the equation, and as this new horror slowly dawned on him, he was honestly at a loss for what to do. I swore to protect her, and NOW look what I've done... As Kagome continued to watch his expression morph from guilt, to remorse, to utter shame, she silently did her best to mentally retrace her steps from the night before. Something had obviously happened, and judging by Inuyasha's reaction, he wasn't expecting her to not remember, which had to mean that she had been an equal and active participant. The fact that she was topless, and he had previously been playful about it rather than embarrassed while mumbling something about a youkai attack that had shredded her clothing, coupled with the fact that he had taken the two of them deep into the forest for privacy, gave her an inkling of what must have transpired, but she was bound and determined to remember it for herself. The fact that their altitude was starting to make her feel sick to her stomach was a nasty distraction, but concentrating on not throwing up, she did her best to focus on her most lucid memories. Okay, let's see... We got back to Kaede-obaa-chan's around 10am. I know that 'cause I remember checking the clock when I went back home. I remember everything that happened at home and at the store when I bought more ramen and medical supplies. I remember coming back through the well around 2pm, and Sango-chan and I deciding to have a soak in that hot spring up the road. Oh yeah, I started to feel funny in the hot spring, I remember that now, and the feeling never really went away the rest of the evening. I...I remember that crazy dream! And then... "Oh, kami..." Inuyasha's ears twitched at her words. Daring to meet her gaze, he was terrified that she was about to be angry with him, after all. That she would hate him, feeling betrayed and used. But instead of an evil glare she met his eyes with a sheepish, embarrassed grin, as she unconsciously clutched his suikan tighter against her chest. Now would be a good time to apologize... he ordered himself, knowing how he said the words so rarely, and if ever there was a time... "Kagome, I'm-" "You're right!" she quickly blurted, cutting him off. "We should, uh...we should get down from this tree. Yeah." She could tell from the look in his eyes that he had been about to apologize, but she didn't want to hear it. She didn't want to hear anything more from him at all at least until she had her feet on the ground and she was fully dressed, or at least as fully dressed as she could get considering she remembered now that she had been barefoot, wearing only a tank top without a bra and her school skirt and panties. Kami, she hoped he had grabbed her panties from wherever she had tossed them. The memories had her cheeks burning red. They were hazy and it honestly felt more like remembering a dream, but the fact that she was half naked in his arms pretty much proved that it hadn't been a dream. She remembered the dream about him that she had had, and how she been all hot and bothered as a result, stumbling outside in a mostly disoriented state in desperate need to sate her lust, even if only by her own hand. Then Inuyasha had shown up... And the rest, as they say, is history... she thought sardonically. What on Earth had come over her? How was she ever supposed to face Inuyasha again after this? She was nothing but a common whore. Tightening her arms around him automatically as she felt him prepare to launch them both out of the tree, she released her grip on him as soon as she was back on the ground, stepping away a few paces after he handed her her clothing in a desperate attempt to buy more time before she had to look his way or speak to him. To Inuyasha, it was obvious she was trying to avoid him, not that he could blame her. Every worry he'd had the night before, that she wasn't herself, that somebody had bewitched her, came back with a vengeance in that moment. He couldn't believe he had been so weak. Some protector he was. She would be safer on her own than in the company of a monster like him. Never mind the fact that they were mates now. That minor technicality didn't mean he actually had any right to be in her presence. Does she hate me now? he asked himself forlornly, only for another part of himself to rebel against the notion. Why should she? the part of him who'd marked her countered, reminding himself, She's the one who made all the first moves... But she wasn't herself... he thought then, his human and youkai sides warring as his heart argued with his instincts. She can't be blamed for that, I should have stopped it. But I tried! he tried to defend against his guilty conscious. I should have tried harder! Instead I took control and marked her. I'm scum... Inuyasha continued to argue with himself while Kagome got dressed behind him, when the sudden sound of her hissing in pain immediately had him spinning around just in time to catch sight of her skirt dropping back into place from her pulling on her panties. She's in that much pain? His ears lowered to his head at the thought, a forlorn whimper escaping his throat which he didn't mean for her to hear, though it was clear she did by the way she immediately glanced his way. Guiltily, he turned his head, knowing he had no right to look at her. "Here..." she whispered, gaining his attention as she handed him back his suikan, which he took from her slowly, daring to peak at her through his bangs as he hesitantly asked, "Kagome, are you...okay?" "I'll..." she started, only to pause abruptly as her stomach lurched. Quickly spinning around she grabbed her stomach with one hand and her hair with the other as she emptied her stomach's contents onto the forest floor. "...be okay." she managed to get out after a moment, grimacing as she wiped the side of her mouth with the back of her hand. Inuyasha could do nothing but stare in horror. A nasty little voice in the back of his head wanted to tell him that he had made her sick, that the memory of bedding a hanyou was what had her retching, but he knew that wasn't true. Kagome loved him, or at least she used to before he'd proven that he couldn't be trusted. But all feelings of guilt and self-loathing aside, he knew she was genuinely sick, most likely from whatever had made her act drunk the night before. It was like she was hungover. As she emptied her stomach a second time, groaning in discomfort, he cringed, his heart panging in his chest at the sound of her suffering. No matter how she might feel about him now, he had to make sure that she was truly okay. Going over to her then, he was cautiously optimistic when she didn't shy away from him as he sat down beside her where she now knelt in the dirt, her legs having grown too shaky to remain standing. Taking her silent acceptance of his proximity as a good sign, he hesitantly reached forward to rub soothing circles on her back, which she didn't resist, instead allowing her body to droop some in her fatigue. Feeling braver, the hanyou gingerly reached up to cup her shoulders with both hands, slowly leaning her backwards as he maneuvered himself to sit directly behind her, wrapping his arms around her as he held her against his chest, his chin sitting lightly on the top of her head. Having given up on the notion of avoiding him as a pitiful desire to run away from the truth, Kagome didn't fight him or herself, allowing her back to collapse against his powerful chest while trying desperately to find some small measure of solace in the fact that Inuyasha was, apparently, not repulsed by her. Her head was still spinning, her mind was in a fog, her muscles ached and she was stinging and sore in a very private location, her stomach was doing flips and now, to top it all off, her mouth tasted like vomit. She couldn't help it. She started to cry. "Kagome..." came a tired sigh from behind her, as the arms wrapped around her body tightened ever so slightly. "I'm so sorry." "It's not your fault." was her reply, though by her almost casual tone he figured she was merely referring to her sudden wave of sickness. "No, I mean...about last night." he decided to clarify. "I'm sorry I was so weak." "You were weak?" the miko echoed disbelievingly. She almost chuckled except she was still too embarrassed from what her memories were telling her had apparently happened last night to find any amusement in the situation. Still, looking back on it, it almost felt as if it wasn't even her, as if she was looking at the memories of somebody else, although she knew it had been herself and her own actions. She hadn't been possessed...having fallen victim to that particular phenomenon in the past gave her legitimate basis for comparison. No, even though she didn't really have a comparison to base this one on, it was like she had been drunk. That was the only way she knew how to explain it. But how on Earth had that happened? Finally, she got back to the subject at hand, verbally acknowledging, "I don't recall you being weak." "Feh!" he countered right away. "I should have stopped it!" "You wish you'd stopped it?" He blanched at her disheartened tone, caught off guard. "I...I didn't say that, I just...uh..." "Which is it?" "Uh..." Unexpectedly, Kagome threw herself from Inuyasha's grasp in that moment, and rather violently, though he quickly realized it wasn't because he had upset her as she started throwing up again. Sighing, he did the only thing he could do and held her hair out of the way for her, rubbing gentle circles on her back until her stomach settled back down. He was surprised, though also tremendiously relieved, when upon finishing up Kagome once again leaned herself back against him, allowing him to resume holding her in his cautious embrace. Thank the kami, he thought. At least she doesn't seem to hate me. "Look at you, Kagome!" he spoke up then, hoping to distract her and change the subject from what it had been. "Something obviously got into you last night that's making you sick now. What'd you eat or drink?" "Nothing that would have made me..." she started, only to stop mid-sentence as a horrible blush returned to her cheeks. "Inuyasha, I'm the one who needs to apologize to you. I...I don't know what came over me, seriously." "I know, Kagome." he sighed in resignation. "It's all right, I'll release you if that's what you want." "No, it's just that I...wait, release me? What are you talking about?" "From being my mate." Upon registering his words, Kagome opened her mouth to respond, but a sudden wave of nausea had her throwing herself forward out of his embrace again, instead, to dry heave with a groan of pain. Inuyasha's ears lowered to his head in shame and remorse as he watched her, feeling helpless. He knew she wasn't reacting to what he'd said, it was just bad timing, but that didn't stop him from begging, "Kagome...Kagome please don't hate me. I'm so sorry..." He almost wanted to cry, himself, as the full ramifications of what he'd done finally sank in. She didn't know anything about inu-youkai mating. She didn't know that when the male marks the female as he had done, she was bound to him, and only him, for life. Of course, what she had wasn't a true possession mark. Those were done from behind, if he had merely wanted to claim her as 'his woman', but since he presently lacked a mark of his own it basically functioned the same way. She was still his, regardless of his own unmarked status. With inu-youkai there were three basic paths to mating; two different types of marks, or no mark whatsoever. It was perfectly acceptable to rut without marking, which held no more significance than two unmarried humans going at it in the middle of the night. If he had managed to reign in his youkai instincts and keep his desire to mark her under control then their night together wouldn't have left things quite so complicated. As it was, though, because he had marked her, she was technically his wife now, and would be for the rest of her life. But...because she was human and didn't know anything about inu-youkai law, Inuyasha decided in that moment that he could let her go, because he loved her, regardless of the rules. If she really didn't want him, he would let her go, even though it would kill him inside to see her with another. Even though no proper youkai would have her now, or human man, actually, at least from his time, he knew that the humans in her time wouldn't comprehend the mark, and wouldn't know that she had been claimed by a youkai. Since she hadn't marked him in return, the soul-bond hadn't been formed, meaning that while she was technically bound to him physically, she at least wasn't bound to him mentally or spiritually. When it came to marks, there were two basic types: possessive and bonding. A possessive mark was much more common, and was done when the male claimed his female, almost like his property. It was actually accepted for inu-youkai males to have multiple mates. Females could have multiple partners, too, but only if they remained unmarked. Once a female was branded, she belonged to that particular male exclusively, but it wasn't uncommon for inu males to have harems. A bonding mark, on the other hand, was done facing your partner instead of taking her from behind, and the female would also mark the male, at the same time. His submission of allowing himself to be marked in return, his acceptance of her claiming him as hers and hers alone, would trigger a reaction in his youki that formed a soul-bond between the pair, who would remain each other's exclusive mates for the rest of their lives. It was something that had to be done with great care, because his youki would refuse to create the bond if he already had a possessive mark placed on more than one female, so the duel claiming was actually rather rare, and usually only done between partners who were each other's firsts. In most cases, even when the male and female had every intention of remaining faithful to each other, they would either remain unmarked or the female would bear a possessive mark alone, because...to put it bluntly...most male inu didn't fancy the idea of letting their females be their equal, of submitting to them and merging their souls together as two halves of one whole. Most male inu were too dominating in their alpha personalities to accept a genuine partnership, no matter how much they loved their female. Of course, Inuyasha was not most male inu. That type of bond was what he wanted to share with Kagome more than anything in the world. Especially since with her being human, the soul-bond would tie her aura to his youki, increasing her senses even more so than the small boost they'd gained from his mark, increasing her very lifespan so that they wouldn't just be together for the rest of her life, but for the rest of his life, instead, as their souls became one. But there was no way he would be able to forgive himself for pulling her into such a commitment without her consent or even her comprehension, and in that moment, Inuyasha actually felt relieved that she hadn't somehow managed to mark him in return purely on accident. His youki surely would have made the bond, and he knew in that moment that that was definitely something he needed to discuss with her before going through with it. While he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was what he wanted, it needed to be what she wanted, as well. In the meantime, she was still his mate...unless of course she didn't want to be. Though it would kill him inside, he would release her if that was what she truly wanted. There was no way to undo the mark, no way to remove the little piece of himself that he had implanted within her when his youki branded her as his, but despite his claim he was human enough to let her walk out of his life without a fight, if it would make her happy. Clutching at her stomach, Kagome concentrated on taking slow, even breaths, praying to get her nausea back under control. She vaguely recalled hearing Inuyasha beg her not to hate him, but her mind was still reeling from his previous words, about her being his mate. Unbidden, flashes from the night before showed her the memory of him marking her, and her hand automatically rose to feel the bite mark at the base of her throat, where her neck met her shoulder. It would definitely leave a scar, though she felt mildly relieved to realize her school uniform should cover it sufficiently enough. Her friends would all freak if they saw a giant dog bite on her throat. While it was true that she didn't know very much about inu-youkai mating customs, she did know enough thanks to a few 'girl talks' with Sango about her feelings for a certain somebody to know that inu-youkai used bite marks on the neck to claim their mates. She didn't know much more than that, but she equated the bite mark to a wedding ring of sorts; a symbol of her new status. Mumbling more to herself than asking him an actual question, Kagome whispered the word 'mate' in a hesitant fashion, gulping as the true meaning of that word started to hit home. Semi-lost in thought, Inuyasha reacted on instinct to hearing her say 'mate' in a questioning tone, replying automatically with "Yes?" as though she had addressed him by name before immediately realizing what he'd just done, mentally kicking himself for his stupidity. Fortunately, Kagome was still somewhat lost in thought, herself, and so her only reaction to his faux pas was a mumbled "Huh? Oh, nothing..." while blushing once more and shaking her head at herself. When she finally dared meeting his eyes, Kagome gasped in surprise at what looked suspiciously like unshed tears glistening in his amber pools. Her heart immediately went out to him at the sight, her own problems instantly forgotten as she reached forward and gently grasped his hand. "Inuyasha..." she voiced quietly. "I don't hate you. I could never hate you. Please don't cry." He closed his eyes at her words, a single tear breaking free against his will, though whether it was from remorse or relief he wasn't sure. But at the sensation of Kagome's hand delicately brushing the tear from his cheek, Inuyasha knew that while he should have perhaps felt embarrassed over showing such weakness in front of her, instead, he felt nothing but love. "Kagome," he insisted then, opening his eyes to fix her with a serious expression. "I'll leave it in your hands, you tell me what you want." "But that's not fair to you." "In what way?" "I don't want to force you to be my mate." "You're not forcing me. Wait, does that mean you want-?" His question was cut short when he suddenly had to hold Kagome's hair back so that she could throw up, again, the words 'I don't want to force you' ringing in his ears. When she sat herself back up again, she promptly continued with, "I pretty much forced you last night. I can't believe I attacked you like that! You're the one who should hate me." and with that, she was crying again, though thankfully not as hard as before. "Please forgive me..." she whispered under her breath, knowing he would hear her. "Kagome..." he sighed in a combination of weariness and wonder, wrapping his arms around her tightly as she cried on his shoulder. "There's nothing to forgive, I've wanted you for a long time." "You have?" she sniffled, her face still buried in his suikan as she continued to cry. "If I didn't want you, I would have easily resisted you." he pointed out. "But you did resist me at first." Kagome mumbled next, sitting back slightly so that she could face him. "I only resisted at first because my mind told me you weren't yourself, but then, my body got the better of me." he admitted with a crimson blush staining his own cheeks. Kagome wanted to disagree with his assessment, recalling quite clearly now how she had very literally been all over him. So he had eventually caved and gotten into it...so what? She had definitely been the instigator. How could he possibly believe that what had happened between them was somehow his fault? "I wanted you," he continued in that moment, "But I didn't want to take advantage of you while you were acting all drunk. That's what I'm sorry about, Kagome." "Okay..." the miko relented after a moment, ignoring her embarrassment for the time being to make sure they had the entire situation spelled out in black and white. "So...I ingested something that made me act all drunk and slutty..." she started, pausing to blush once more at the memory, even as she still felt completely at a loss for what could have possibly affected her in such a way. "...And, after doing a fairly good job of resisting, I might add, I finally broke down your defenses. After all, you are a guy..." His cheeks darkened at the memory of just what, exactly, she had done in order to get him to comply. "So...in a way, we were both seduced." she reasoned logically, adding, "That's better than if you'd jumped right in the sack with me at first sight." "I guess." was his humble reply, uncertainty present in his tone of voice. "No, Inuyasha, I mean it." she assured him then. "I can't blame you for reacting to my advances, kami, how I remember them now..." His face practically disappeared into the red of his suikan at those words. "...But, I really appreciate that you didn't take advantage of me, complying right away like 'Oh hey, Kagome's drunk, I'm gonna get lucky.'" she mocked. "And I'm...I'm glad it was you. Thank goodness I didn't have a one-night-stand with a total stranger." "One-night-stand?" he asked curiously. "Oh, in my time, that's what we call it when a man and a woman have sex right away, the first night they meet, 'cause they're both drunk and/or horny, and neither of them really plan on seeing each other again afterwards, as they go their separate ways in the morning." "No, you definitely didn't have one of those, Kagome." "I'm glad." she repeated again. Then remembering how he had tried to kiss her back in the tree and how she'd flinched away in surprise, she decided to make it up to him in that moment by leaning forward to kiss him herself, letting him know with the action that she was grateful for his presence. It was just a chaste peck, but the gesture was greatly appreciated, she could tell, as she felt some of the tension melt right out of him. Pulling away slightly, Kagome found her eyes once again meeting his own, only this time, their amber depths weren't shining with unshed tears. What they shone with instead was something entirely different, and Kagome wasn't sure if she was ready to face what it was. Inuyasha felt so much love for Kagome in that moment he felt like his heart was about to burst right out of his chest. Her brief statement about not wanting to force him had him hoping that she really did want to be his mate, which was a good thing since in reality she was his mate whether she liked it or not. Was it too soon to broach the subject of the soul-bond? I at least need to let her know what effects the small amount of youki in my claim-mark will have on her human system... he thought in that moment, opening his mouth to address the topic when Kagome's nervous laughter unexpectedly cut him off. "Now then..." she started suddenly, her tone a little too bright to be real given their present circumstances, as she clapped her hands in determination, her real mission to change the subject from whatever intense topic had been on Inuyasha's mind given the look in his eyes. "If I only knew what it was that'd made me act that way." she finished, her gaze turning questioning as she gave the matter some genuine thought. Understanding his mate's sudden need to change the subject, even though they still had a ton of things that needed to be discussed, Inuyasha decided to let the rest of the conversation go for the time being as he instead did something productive by sniffing towards the direction where she'd thrown up. "I can't tell for sure..." he reluctantly admitted when she glanced his way hopefully, having caught his sniffing and hoping that he'd have an answer for her. "It smells mostly of mint." he added, crinkling his nose in confusion since that was a harmless herb. There were other herbs he could smell buried in the mix as well, but most of them he only recognized from smelling them as they grew in the wild; he had no idea what they actually were, or what they did when consumed. But he didn't need to identify any of the other herbs, that one in particular immediately catching Kagome's attention. "Mint?" she questioned, thinking back to the one detail regarding her and Sango's bath yesterday that she had overlooked before. "I did drink some pretty strong mint tea yesterday..." she started slowly, her sudden gasp of surprise immediately earning his full attention. "What is it?" "It was Sango-chan's tea, that Miroku-sama made for her."
