“Innocence”

The further her steps took her from that cursed well and his forest, the lighter Kagome's heart felt. Her iPod had run out the day before, so she was left with the sounds of nature to soothe her broken heart. Well, that and the swift footsteps of Lord Sesshomaru in front of her. He was a puzzle she was becoming determined to solve. Granted he loved Rin as a daughter, but it still didn't make a lot of sense why he would travel to Inuyasha's Forest, just to take her back with him for Rin's sake. There had to be more to this than he was letting on, and the young miko was determined to figure it out.
Too absorbed in his own thoughts to notice her eyes upon him, Lord Sesshomaru was busy sorting through what he knew about the Sun Dog Clan of the East. At one time, they'd be a group of powerful inu youkai bonded by their deep family ties, and their knowledge of spells and sorcery would put any kitsune to shame. They were the near opposite of his Moon Clan. Where they enjoyed being solitary and kept his feelings remote, even to those closest to him, a Sun Dog wasn't complete without a member of their pack close by. They radiated warmth and positivity. Albeit their differences, the two clans had been close, until the impetuous Lord of the West Inu-Taisho had spotted a pair of dark mortal eyes of a beloved human princess named Izayoi. Without permission, he'd whisked the girl off to his palace, and had a child with her. This breach in courtesy had sparked a deep hatred between them, yet with their dwindling numbers, the Sun Dogs couldn't retaliate. Instead, they seemed to go into hiding; he hadn't heard anything about them since his visit to the witch.
“Did you hear me?” Idly, Lord Sesshomaru glanced behind him at the miko. Despite the rigorous pace he set for them, she still appeared to be unruffled. He turned back to the trail.
“No.” Kagome huffed irritably.
“I asked where we were going.”
“This Sesshomaru does not care what you asked.” Bending down as she walked, Kagome picked up a small pebble, intending to pelt it as his overly inflated head. She thought better of it, and aimed at a passing tree instead. She missed, and tried a new tactic, one that always worked on his brother.
“Ses-sho-maruuuu,” she groaned in the whiniest voice she could muster. Sighing dramatically, she wailed his name a few more times in the same fashion before he responded.
“This Sesshomaru is taking you to Rin. You are to act as a second caregiver to her while this Sesshomaru searches Inuyasha's Forest for his she.” Jogging, Kagome caught up to him and began to walk by his side. Her scent overran his nose. He nearly frowned. While it still held the musky stench of all her kind, a hint of jasmine and rose lingered in his mind. He chose to ignore it.
“Wait, you mean act like a nanny to her while you go about looking for your girlfriend?” She raised an eyebrow, not sure whether or not she liked this arrangement. “Why don't you just take her with you? Why bother with me at all?” Granted she didn't have any impending plans in the future, she didn't feel the need to inform him of that little detail.
“It is not a 'girlfriend' this Sesshomaru seeks out, but the she who is to become his mate. He was told she lingers in these woods, and he intends to find her and mate her. You are to keep Rin occupied as the search goes on. She gets easily distracted while walking.” Why in the seven Hells was he explaining this to her? She was a mere human who should have been grateful to be in his presence.
“How long do you intend to be away? Who told you where she would be?” Now she was getting curious.
“This Sesshomaru will not be away. You and Rin are coming.” Sesshomaru didn't add that Jaken would be sent ahead to his palace to ready the arrival of he and his new mate after they'd gathered Rin. He looked ahead, unsure of how she would react to his next words. “A witch said so.”
To his surprise and annoyance she burst out laughing. The daiyoukai bit back a growl. “And you believed her?” she guffawed. Chuckling under her breath, Kagome took out some string from her yellow bag, intending on teaching Rin how to play Cat's Cradle. “Sounds like a bunch of cock-a-mammy bull-crap to me.” He raised a silver eyebrow at her tone. She turned innocent blue eyes to his icy amber ones, amusement lurking in their depths. “What? It sounds awfully fishy. Besides, you don't seem like the type who believes in that sort of stuff.”
“She has been...correct a number of times before. This Sesshomaru saw no reason to doubt her now.” They walked in silence for a while, slowly coming to the edge of the forest. Through the trees Kagome could see a small meadow. Wild flowers danced in the wind, rolling like ocean waves. Suddenly, a flash of orange kimono came barreling towards them. Rin sucked in huge mouthfuls of air in her excitement as she ran, not to Sesshomaru, but straight into Kagome's waiting arms.
“Kagome!” the little girl screeched, unknowingly offending her adoptive father's sensitive ears. “Rin hoped you would come! Now you have! Rin missed you!” Laughing at her exuberance, the miko hugged her fiercely.
“Well, Rin, I thought to myself, Somewhere in the world is a little girl who needs a big sister.” She put Rin back on the ground, straightening the unruly black pony tail. “I couldn't think of any little girl better than you.” Although she obviously didn't understand everything Kagome said, Rin still gave her a big lopsided smile, exposing her one missing tooth.
“Rin.”
Immediately the human girl clasped her hands in front of her respectively, nodding and smiling up at her inu youkai father. “Hello, Lord Sesshomaru! Rin is so very glad you've come back.” A chip of ice fell from his heart at the sight of her smiling at him. Kagome noticed the slight shift of emotion in his eyes, and hid a smile of her own. She never doubted the youkai lord loved this little human girl whom he'd adopted, yet it was quite something to actually see it with her own eyes.
“Kagome will be coming with us. You will show her proper respect.” Nodding, Rin grabbed Kagome's hand and held on tightly. The miko was taken aback by her innocence, her mind shifting to Shippo. Looking away, she bit back her tears, determined not to show the child her sadness.
