Prompt Summary: Following a clue that led him to a small town, Bankotsu has his first encounter with a man who will change his life forever.
Bankotsu shook his head to clear his mind of years long past; reminiscing about his disappointing childhood would do no good. For the past three days, he had been traveling westbound following the trail of the latest clue he had managed to find. He was sure this one would simply lead to another tiny, almost nonexistent clue that would have him going back in the direction he had just traveled, but he had decided long ago that every clue had to be investigated.
Even this one that was bringing him to a small, run down town in the middle of nowhere that had seen better days. Pulling back on the reins of his horse to slow down as he closed in on the hitching post just outside of the saloon, he wiped the back of his hand across his forehead to remove the sweat that had accumulated during his travels before tossing his long braid over his shoulder and out of his way. Dismounting, he tied the reins around the post and made his way inside.
Instantly his presence was noticed as he pushed open the swinging saloon doors and watched in silence as everyone in the room turned toward the intrusion. Apparently deciding he was uninteresting, they turned their attention back to what they had been doing before the interruption and Bankotsu crossed the threshold into the room. Spying a barkeep serving a bushy looking trapper at the end of a long wooden counter, Bankotsu took a stool at the other end.
Removing his five dollar Stetson felt hat, he carefully placed it on the counter beside him and flagged the barkeep down. “Whiskey neat,” he ordered and watched as the barkeep grabbed a glass and began pouring his drink without so much as a nod to acknowledge he had heard him. A moment later, the glass was placed before him as the barkeep looked at him expectantly. Reaching into the coin purse at his side, he fished out a couple of coins and placed a dime and a nickle on the counter.
As Bankotsu raised the glass to his dry lips, barely noticing the barkeep picking up the money and making his way over to his next customer, he took his first sip before scrunching up his nose at the taste. The whiskey had obviously been watered down and the water was most certainly not fresh, but at only 15 cents for the glass when his last, and equally as bad, drink had been a quarter, Bankotsu decided it wasn't worth causing a stink over.
Downing the weak contents, Bankotsu set the glass back down on the counter and went to stand up when one of the saloon girls sat down next to him and prevented him from getting up. “You looking for a good time, Sugar?” she inquired with a sultry smile as she raised her eyes up to his. It was then that he noticed something off about her. She had an Adam's apple.
