Chapter 3: The Journey Begins
AN: So after taking a hiatus on writing, again, due to many real life situations, I dusted off my laptop and discovered this WIP... I am ashamed to say I don't remember where I was going with this fic, but I do still want to see where it ends up. Hopefully the journey still will be enjoyable and my writing style won't have changed too much in the last 6 years.
'…' = Thoughts
“...” = Speech
After several false starts, the group finally began their journey with their newest addition. Inuyasha scowled as he tried to speed up the group’s pace to make up for the time lost earlier that morning. “Come on, I’ve seen old crippled women move faster than you lot!” With the new addition, they were unable to employ their usual means of fast travel, ie Miroku, Shippou, and Sango on Kirara and Kagome on Inuyasha’s back. ‘If I had known we would be traveling this slow I would have dumped his ass back through the well when I had the chance.’ Thought the hanyou to himself.
After several more hours of the hanyou grumbling and the group getting more frustrated with his complaints, Kagome turned to the kit walking beside her. “I think we are about done for the day.”
The kitsune tilted his head curiously. “What do you mean? Are you going home again?” Shippou responded.
Kagome shook her head and turned her attention to Ryoga. “Ryoga-san...” Kagome murmured as she stepped closer to their new companion. “I am tired of hearing the constant unprovoked ranting that Inuyasha is indulging in. I am sure you are as well.” She sent the black-haired young man a questioning look.
Ryoga sighed, knowing what was coming. “How will me changing, help? I thought I was coming to help provide you with extra defense. It's a bit hard to defend someone when you are a piglet.”
Kagome bit her lip and winced. “You do make a good point, but if we can make better time this evening, he will be more tolerant tomorrow, I am sure of it. I will start some water heating immediately when we make camp.”
Ryoga sighed. It wasn't like he could find his way back home without them. “Perhaps after we finish this trip and cycle back to the well, I will go home. I didn't stay to become a burden.”
Inuyasha kept grumbling to hide the fact he was eavesdropping on the conversation between his miko and the pig boy. It was undeniable the kid had a great attack but so far he was hindering them by slowing their travel.
“Surely you aren't going to carry both packs, are you?”
“I will have to, Kirara will be carrying Sango, Shippou, and Miroku.” Kagome nodded at the hanyou. “Inuyasha is more than strong enough to carry me, the packs and your smaller form. It will mostly be an exercise in balance.”
“Keh.” Inuyasha snorted. As if an extra pack and a piglet could slow him down.
“Very well.” Ryoga said and stopped walking. He set his pack down. “Just a small splash on my hand will suffice.” He extended his hand towards Kagome as she uncapped her canteen.
Kagome bit her lip after dribbling the required water to keep from cooing over just how cute she found Ryoga in his altered form. He stood on his pile of clothes for a second before shifting to one side. The miko quickly knelt down after closing her canteen and began to gather and fold his clothing to put in his pack.
“Won't he get squished with all the bouncing if you hold him against you like you've been doing?” Sango asked while studying the piglet. “That has to be one of the most amazing things I have ever seen, and to think a cursed spring caused this.”
“I was thinking I could put him in my backpack's side pocket. It was how I carried him up and out of the well.” Kagome said. “He should be secure in it.”
“I think I will have Kirara run beside Inuyasha for a bit to make sure this is working.” Sango replied. “It wouldn't do for him to fall out and get left behind in that form.”
Kagome nodded. “Thank you, Sango. I have to admit, I didn't think this through too clearly. I just wanted him to stop complaining.” She emphasized the word him and jerked her head towards the half-breed as if there was any question on whom she was referring to. Kagome finished putting away Ryoga's clothing and gently placed the piglet in the empty pocket he had originally hidden in.
“All right! Let's do this!” Inuyasha said happily when Kagome awkwardly settled the two packs on her back. He knelt down for her to climb on his back.
“Start off slow, Inuyasha.” Kagome warned. “And stay out of the trees until we know if this is even doable.” While she gave the hanyou her directions, Kirara had transformed so her usual group could climb on.
“Hai, hai...” Inuyasha said just to get Kagome to be quiet and move things along. “We're losing daylight here.”
Kagome sighed as she quickly took the proffered piggy back. When the hanyou stood and began a light jog, the humor of the situation hit her. She giggled as she realized a piglet was getting a piggyback ride.
Inuyasha tilted his head in silent question when the miko started giggling but she just shook her head instead of answering him. “Just a funny thought.” She commented airily.
Inuyasha shrugged. Kagome did that a lot. 'Probably thinking of something from her time.' He told himself. “So far, so good. I am going to pick up the pace.
Sango kept her eyes on Kagome and the piglet peeping out of a pocket trusting Miroku, Shippou and Kirara to be alert for danger. She wasn't expecting any this close to the village but it could happen. It wouldn't be the first time. Seeing Inuyasha start to leave them behind, she said, “Keep low, Kirara. We need to make sure we don't lose Ryoga-san.”
The group traveled until it started to get dark. They settled in a small clearing to make camp. True to her word, Kagome immediately pulled out Ryoga's tea kettle and put in some water as Shippou ran around gathering what wood he could easily find in the clearing to help.
“I'll go refill our canteens.” Sango announced. “Inuyasha, will you be hunting us something for dinner or will we be eating Kagome's rations again?”
“I smell some rabbits nearby. I'll take the runt and try to teach him some life skills.”
Kagome began to build a campfire piling some leaves and other small dead plant material in the middle and layering on the smaller sticks that Shippou had gathered. “Miroku, I will need more wood than this to keep the fire going for cooking.”
“Say no more, my lady.” Miroku stated and quickly left to gather enough wood for the fire.
Ryoga had already clambered out of the pocket and sat by Kagome as she quickly and efficiently build a textbook campfire and lit it with ease. It was obvious she had been doing this a while. He jumped slightly when Kagome sat back on her heels and picked him up. She began to stroke his ears.
Kagome sighed in contentment as she waited on the tea kettle to heat. “I suppose I should apologize for being so familiar with your altered self, Ryoga-san.” She said while still stroking the piglet's ears. “I wouldn't dare be so familiar with you in your human state.”
“Don't listen to her, Ryoga-san.” Miroku countered while entering the clearing. He set his stack of firewood by the cheery blaze. “I heard she petted Inuyasha's ears immediately when she saw him in his enchanted sleep. Not one introduction or how are you and can I pet you to be heard.”
Kagome felt her cheeks heat up in embarrassment. “So, I like soft ears. Is there anything wrong with that?” She looked down at the piglet in her lap. “Do you mind me petting you?” Kagome asked quietly.
Ryoga opened his eyes to see her peering down at him with a worried expression. He shook his head, again grateful that his coloring his his blush.
Miroku sighed. “Kagome, he is a young man under twenty. Of course he doesn't mind being cuddled and caressed by an attractive young lady such as yourself. I daresay that being as little as he is greatly enhances the experience.” Miroku felt the air shift a second before the back of his head was struck.
“Sango, I do appreciate your defense of Ryoga-san while he can't speak for himself, but please don't break our few canteens on the houshi's hard skull.”
“Sorry, Kagome. It was the easiest thing for me to throw.” The slayer turned her attention to the piglet. “I promise that we are not all perverts like the monk and only he would think things like that.”
“On that note, I think the water should be warm enough.” Kagome said before reaching over to open both packs. She retrieved the clothing Ryoga had been wearing and set it down before pouring the water into a shallow bowl. “We'll turn our backs to give you privacy.”
Ryoga quickly moved and placed one front foot in the bowl. Immediately he was back in his human form. He quickly tugged his clothing back on. It seemed it wasn't a second too soon for Kagome had jerked around looking past Ryoga. “Kagome?” He asked immediately looking for what had her on edge.
“Two shards coming fast. But how? We aren't anywhere near his den....” Kagome muttered mostly to herself.
“Kouga?” Sango asked for confirmation as she loosely held her hiraikotsu in the off chance she should need it.
“Hai.” Kagome said just as a whirlwind zipped into the clearing stopping a few feet from the miko and dispersing to reveal the ookami.
“How's my woman faring on this lovely evening?” Kouga asked stepping forward to take Kagome's hands in his. He quickly noted the new addition to the party but dismissed him as soon as he realized he was a ningen of no noticeable power. “I see dog-breath has left you unattended, again.”
“We are well, Kouga.” Kagome answered, knowing she was blushing slightly. The wolf prince's intensity never failed to cause one. “Have you found any leads on Naraku?”
Kouga sighed as he tugged Kagome into a loose embrace. “We hear he has all the remaining shards either in his possession or embedded in his puppets.”
Kagome didn't resist when the wolf pulled her in so he could wrap his arms around her shoulders and rest his chin on her head. She needed all the information she could get before Inuyasha came and started a fight losing this chance to hear what the ookami knew.
“Are they together?” Ryoga asked Sango as quietly as he could. He had to admit he was disappointed but not surprised if she was.
“Kouga claimed Kagome as his woman almost immediately after they met. She has never returned his feelings by word or deed. It is most definitely a one-sided love.” Sango replied just as quietly even though she knew the youkai would hear the conversation. Most likely he would ignore them to have more time with Kagome before the hanyou appeared.
“Have you heard anything about his location?” Kagome pressed as she wrapped her arms loosely around Kouga's waist.
“Hakkaku heard a rumor that he was gathering near Sesshoumaru's lands.” Kouga answered while nuzzling the crown of her head and inhaling deeply.
“Any idea if he is North, South, East, or West of Sesshoumaru's lands?” Kagome asked as she reminded herself to breathe. This could be it. They were getting so close to ending everything.
“OI! What the hell do you think you are doing to Kagome?” Inuyasha leapt into the clearing with a snarl.
Kouga quickly turned, putting Kagome to his back as he faced the angry hanyou. “I am cuddling my woman, dog-turd.” He sniffed in disdain. “Something an uneducated mutt like you knows nothing about. Women like to be held gently.”
Inuyasha snorted. “I'll have you know I have held Kagome almost all day long.”
Kagome sighed and walked back to the fire where Shippou was proudly holding up four rabbits. “Those look so nice and plump, Shippou-chan! Did you catch all four?”
Shippou ducked his head and shook it. “I caught two of them. Inuyasha showed me how to sneak up on them from the trees and leap down to catch them.”
“Still, that is impressive. You caught half our dinner.” Sango praised the kit before pulling out her skinning knife. “Help me skin and clean them so we can get them started cooking. Those two will be at it a while.”
Shippou nodded before using his claws in place of a knife, following Sango's movements exactly.
Ryoga moved to sit by the Miko and started helping her prepare some skewers for roasting the meat. “I think your life is just a tad more chaotic than mine.” He stated after a minute.
“I don't know about that. Yours sounds like it could get pretty crazy too.”
“Typically that only happens when Ranma is around.”
“You mentioned that Ranma was the reason you went to the cursed springs, right?” Seeing Ryoga nod, Kagome continued, “Did he fall in one too?”
Ryoga nodded. “He fell in the one that turns him into a petite female gaijin.”
“No!” Kagome gasped out with a giggle.
Ryoga nodded solemnly before adding, “His father fell into the panda cursed spring.”
Kagome began to laugh outright. “That is hilarious!” She said as soon as she was able to gasp some words out.
Sango was smiling at the new information as she took the prepared skewers and impaled the carcasses. Everyone ignored the two demons still bickering at the edge of the clearing. It seemed the two were content with words tonight so no one needed to step in and interrupt them.
After ten minutes or so had passed, Ryoga had to ask. “How long do they normally fight?”
“Until Kagome steps in or Kouga's subordinates show up. Kouga is faster than they are so they fall behind when on patrols.” Miroku answered while settling down closer to the fire.
“Kouga's subordinates?”
“Ginta and Hakkaku.” Kagome answered. “They are two of the sweetest youkai I have ever met. They are very thoughtful and considerate. I have no idea how Kouga's tribe could function if anything ever happened to them.” The sudden silence caught her attention. She glanced over to see both Kouga and Inuyasha staring at her in shock.
Kouga blinked as he tried to process Kagome's words. “What about me and my affect on the tribe?” He asked cautiously, unsure if he wanted to hear the answer.
“You are a great leader, Kouga.” Kagome answered immediately. “It's just that sometimes you get so wrapped up in the bigger picture that you lose sight of what needs to be done in the hear and now. Ginta and Hakkaku are great betas. They make sure of the day to day things so you can focus on the bigger issues. You are loyal, kind, a great fighter, and genuinely care for your people. Each member of your tribe knows you love them and will make sure they are cared for.”
Kouga puffed his chest out as pride swelled within. His woman verbally acknowledged his leadership skills and the fact his beats were the best choice. He couldn't wait to tell them how much their sister thought of them. He cocked his head to one side as he heard them finally approaching.
Ginta and Hakkaku ran into the clearing and stopped. Both leaned forward with their hands on their knees trying to catch their breath. “Thank you, Kami's for placing sister Kagome here.” Ginta gasped out before collapsing face first on the ground.
Hakkaku nodded his agreement as he dropped backwards on his butt before falling back to stare at the night sky.
“Kouga!” Kagome exclaimed in horror while grabbing two canteens and moving to the panting wolves. “You should be ashamed for running them this hard!” She gently helped Hakkaku into a raised position and helped him drink before moving to Ginta. She tsked lightly as she rolled over the sweaty male so she could lift his head enough to drink as well.
Kouga flushed and looked away from Kagome's scowl.
“Don't fuss too much, little sis.” Hakkaku said as he finally gained enough breath back to sit up and talk. “He caught your scent a few hours ago and we haven't seen you in over a month.” He took another gulp of water from the canteen Kagome left beside him before continuing. “After hearing that Naraku had all the remaining shards and was starting to pull in all his players, he had to make sure you were safe.”
“Where is he hiding?” Inuyasha asked quietly, focusing on the most important part of Hakkaku's statement.
“He's near your brother's lands.” Ginta answered as he also sat up and drank some more water.
“What part?” Inuyasha asked with a small growl. “The western lands are vast.”
“The eastern lands are nothing to scoff at.” Kouga countered taking offense to the hanyou's growling.
“Boys, boys, this isn't a contest over whose is bigger.” Miroku said smoothly as he tried to exude a calming aura over the clearing. “We would appreciate a more accurate location.”
“We heard he was gathering in the south.” Hakkaku stated before Kouga or Inuyasha could say anything else. He was trying to keep everyone's temper in check.
“It seems we have a destination.” Inuyasha stated while cracking his knuckles. He looked at Kouga and stared at the wolf in challenge. “Will you be there?”
“I will be there before you.” Kouga scoffed. “My wolves move faster than you and will also beat you there.”
Ginta and Hakkaku shook their heads in dismay. It seemed they were going to be double timing it to their den and back to the western lands to get the pack there for the battle. They slowly pushed their bodies up off the ground and groaned.
Kouga frowned as he took in his betas state. A good night's rest would put them to rights but he needed to get moving now. He crossed his arms before stating, “Ginta, Hakkaku, I need you to stay here and keep my woman safe. I'll go get the tribe. Besides you two just slow me down.” Without waiting on an response he darted forward to pull Kagome into another loose embrace.
“Once we have defeated Naraku, I will woo you in proper wolf fashion. Soon, Kagome.” Kouga said gruffly before pressing a kiss to her forehead and leaving in a whirlwind.
Ginta and Hakkaku flopped back onto the ground with twin sighs of relief. “Thank Kami.” They both whispered to the stars.
“I better make some ramen.” Kagome said and hastened to the fire. “Four rabbits won't be enough for all of us.”
As the group sat around the fire eating, Ginta pointed at Ryoga. “Sis, I am surprised you brought a regular ningen with you. I thought you tried to protect all of them by keeping them away from battles.”
“Ryoga-san may seem like a normal human, but he can fight. He can break boulders with a flick of his finger.” Kagome announced proudly.
Ryoga blushed and rubbed the back of his head nervously. “You make it seem like so much more than it is.” He murmured.
“Keh.” Inuyasha scoffed. “He's useful as long as it isn't raining.” Seeing Kagome's expression darken he hastily added, “They are our allies. They need to know our weaknesses so they can help protect.”
Ginta and Hakkaku looked over at the human before sniffing the air. “What does rain do?” Ginta asked curiosuly.
“I turn into a piglet.” Ryoga said with a frown.
“No.” Hakkaku said in shock.
“Yes.”
“Want to see?” Shippou asked excitedly.
“No, Shippou!” Kagome said before the kit could even begin to open a canteen. “Let it be. I am sure it will happen soon enough and I have no doubt the transformation is quite traumatic on it's own.” She turned her attention to Inuyasha. “Will be begin making our way to your brother's home to see if he is aware of Naraku's movements?”
“Keh.”
“He is a powerful fighter.” Kagome coaxed. “We need all the help we can get with his low level demon hordes and saimyōshō.”
“Fine. We'll start tomorrow. One of the wolves can carry pig boy.” Inuyasha stated before leaping into a tree for the night.
“We better get some rest.” Kagome said cheerfully as she cleaned up the remnants of their dinner and began to lay out her sleeping bag.
Ryoga nodded and pulled out his blanket, laying it on the ground near the fire. He saw Ginta and Hakkaku lean against trees on opposite sides of the clearing, each adjacent to the hanyou's position. Miroku and Sango settled down near the fire on the opposite side of the hanyou. He watched Shippou crawl into Kagome's sleeping bag with her following behind. Tomorrow would be here soon enough with new questions and issues. Hopefully he could get through the next day without transforming.
Soon all the group dozed off to dream of what was coming.
