“Ow!, damnit, woman!. That shit hurts!” InuYasha bellowed. “Well, if you would brush it like any normal person would, the tangles wouldn’t be so painful to get out. Now, stop your bickering and be the strong, fearless hanyou I know you can be.” Kagome said somewhat annoyed. “I ain’t some pup, you know. You don’t have to talk to me like that. I still don’t see why I have to do this.” “Because you apologized to me for you behavior, but the one you really need to apologize to is Aiko. She’s coming back here and you are going to be on your best behavior. Do you understand me InuYasha?” “Feh, yeah, I get it, but that still doesn’t tell me why I had to bathe and why you’re combing my hair.” “You need to look your best and stop complaining. You needed it something awful.” Kagome answered working diligently and crinkling her nose. “Aha! You see. I knew it. It hasn’t even been two whole days since you saw Sesshomaru and you’ve already made a comment about my smell. I bet you two have a good ol’ time making fun of me don’t you?” He said seriously. “You are so self-absorbed you know that. He trains me, InuYasha. We talk sometimes, but I can assure you that we don’t have some dumb contest going on about ‘how much we can ridicule the hanyou about his hygiene.’” “Yeah right.” He crossed his arms pouting. “I can’t believe you would accuse me of something like that. You know me better than that and, well, I can’t speak for Sesshomaru, but you know I would never do something so humiliating to someone. I’m just trying to get you to take a little more pride in your appearance.” “Whatever.” “No, I’m serious. I never say stuff like that about you behind your back. I only say those things to you. You’re very handsome, loyal, trustworthy, strong….” She was cut off by a very embarrassed and red faced InuYasha. “I get it. I get it, woman. I need to be proud of myself. Just…Ow! Damnit!...Just hurry up and let’s get this over with.” Kagome had set out the dinner on their low table and placed an extra cushion across from InuYasha for Aiko. She had just put the chopsticks in place when she heard the knock on the door frame. She turned to see an obviously nervous Aiko walk into the hut. She darted her eyes to InuYasha before snapping them back to Kagome. “Good evening, Aiko. I’m so glad you made it!” Kagome exclaimed as she rushed forward and gave the girl a light hug. “Thank you for inviting me Lady Kagome.” She said timidly, returning the hug. “Why don’t we all si…I mean have a seat.” Kagome corrected her speech just in time, but it didn’t go unnoticed by InuYasha who was glaring at her. They settled themselves in their places and began scooping the rice into their bowls. Kagome poured the tea for everyone and waited. It was so quiet in the hut you could have heard a feather drop. She kept glancing at InuYasha hoping he would take the hint, but he ignored her attempts. Poor Aiko would glance up at the hanyou across from her every once in a while and Kagome could see the sadness in her eyes. “I just was wondering how you’ve been doing at the shop, Aiko. Do you enjoy your work?” Kagome asked in an ill attempt of breaking the awkward silence. “I’m doing well under Fumiko’s tutelage. She says I’m a very fast learner. I really do enjoy what I do.” She answered quietly. “You mean you actually like making all those clothes? Don’t it take a long time and what if people complain?” InuYasha asked in his usual gruff manner. “Well, people will complain regardless of what you do. I just choose to ignore it, because I know that I do my very best and the craftsmanship of each garment is second to none. It does take a long time to make a garment, like you said InuYasha, but I find that making something beautiful out of something that was just plain is quite gratifying.” She replied sweetly, clearly excited that InuYasha had spoken to her. “Huh, well, do you think you could fix my haori? Kagome usually mends it for me, but I’d like a professional to do it.” Kagome ignored the jab from her friend, trying to repeat to herself the mantra ‘At least he’s making an effort,’ over and over in her head. “Umm, well, I’m sure that Lady Kagome does a fine job, but I’ll see what I can do. I’ll take a look at it after dinner, okay.” She said with a little embarrassment wavering in her voice. InuYasha just nodded and they all went back to finishing off their dinner. After Kagome had cleaned the table and InuYasha washed the dishes, after much protest and two sittings, they sat around the pit as Aiko inspected his haori. “This is made of fire rat isn’t it?” Aiko asked as she focused on the little rips in one of his long sleeves. “Yeah, what of it?” InuYasha snapped defensively. Kagome just rolled her eyes gaining a glare from him. “It’s beautiful. The texture is very soft.” She replied, ignoring the tone InuYasha had used. InuYasha was for once speechless and Kagome smiled at her red faced friend. “I’m going to need to take it back to the shop to mend it properly. You have many tares and I don’t want to risk anymore damage to it. That is if that’s okay with you, InuYasha?” Aiko asked, daring to look directly in InuYasha’s golden eyes. “Umm, sure, I mean, you’re going to bring it back, right? I mean, it’s the only one I got.” InuYasha stuttered out, breaking the eye contact with the young girl to stare at something on the floor that had become very interesting all of a sudden. “I promise I’ll bring it back tomorrow evening good as new.” She said proudly. InuYasha stood and untied his fire rat haori, shrugged it off and handed it to the blushing girl. Aiko stood and tucked the red garment under her arm and bowed to Kagome. “Forgive me, Lady Kagome, but I must be leaving now. Thank you for a wonderful evening.” Kagome stood and bowed back. Then Aiko turned to InuYasha and bowed causing the hanyou’s face to darken a deeper shade of red. “Thank you as well, InuYasha. I shall see you tomorrow evening.” Aiko said as she rose and left the hut. Kagome watched him; clad in his white undershirt, staring at the door the young girl had just exited. “She’s a nice girl, don’t you think InuYasha?” Kagome asked, jolting him from his stray thoughts. “Yeah, nice girl.” He muttered, and then turned to face the grinning Kagome. “What are you looking at me like that for? I can think someone’s nice.” He said before stalking off to his hammock and taking Tetsaiga from his belt before he hoisted himself into the netting. Kagome just sighed and shook her head before gathering her bathing supplies for her nightly ritual. She had bathed and felt refreshed. She was latching the gate to the hot spring silently musing over InuYasha’s obvious attraction to the little seamstress when she felt a strong demonic aura approaching fast. InuYasha bounded into view and stood with Tetsusaiga drawn in front of Kagome. “Just stay behind me, Kagome. I don’t know what the asshole wants at this time of night. His brat’s already with Kaede.” InuYasha growled. He really wasn’t fond of his older half-brother, everyone knew that. Kagome also knew he hated the fact that Sesshomaru trained her and he would make snippy comments about her being alone with him, which earned him a sitting every time. The stoic demon lord touched down in front of InuYasha and just glared at the hanyou for a moment before he spoke. “Put the fang away, half-breed. This Sesshomaru has not come here for a fight.” Sesshomaru stated coolly. “Oh yeah, then what the hell are you doing here?” InuYasha retorted still brandishing Tetsusaiga. “It is no concern of yours, little brother. I have come to speak with the Miko.” He stated coolly flicking his eyes in her direction. Kagome was curious, but a little nervous too. Sesshomaru never showed up at the village unless he was dropping off or picking up Rin. Why was he here? Kagome walked forward and put her hand on InuYasha’s shoulder. “It’s okay, InuYasha. Go back inside. He just wants to talk.” Kagome said quietly to her overzealous friend. “Like hell, Kagome. It’s one thing to let you train with the son of a bitch, but for you to be alone with him at night, oh fuck that. He’s a bastard and I bet he’s got something up his sleeve. I just know it.” InuYasha grit out. Kagome had to admit, due to Sesshomaru’s odd behavior, he had a point. “No, half-breed, it is you who are the bastard. This Sesshomaru gives his word that no harm will befall the Miko.” Well there you go. Kagome was satisfied. Sesshomaru was many things, but he was no liar. He valued his honor too much to allow such a petty thing as fibbing to tarnish it. “InuYasha, please go inside so I can hear what he has to say.” Kagome pleaded. “Feh, whatever wench. “ InuYasha gave up, while sheathing his father’s fang and walking back to the hut. He muttered “Asshole” before he ducked his head inside. She turned her attention back to Sesshomaru who was standing there watching her intently. “What brings you out here so late, Sesshomaru-sama?” Kagome asked nervously. “This Sesshomaru would speak with you concerning Rin.” “Rin? This late? Couldn’t have waited?” She asked stunned. “No. Several things have been brought to this One’s attention and seeing as you are a human woman you would be able to give this Sesshomaru the answers he requires. However, we will move from this place first.” He strode toward Kagome and grabbed her waist bringing her close to his side and took to the skies. “Why?” It was all she could manage. She had never flown with Sesshomaru before, never had he touched her unless during training and it threw her slightly off kilter. “This Sesshomaru does not wish for the hanyou to hear his questions.” They touched down in the field they used for training. He released his hold on her and strode away, setting down in their usual spot of meditation. Kagome followed and repeated the actions of the demon Lord. “Okay, we’re here. What’s going on with Rin?” Kagome asked sounding a little more impatient than she actually felt. “Rin has expressed interest in the young slayer. This Sesshomaru has just returned from the slayer village. After a discussion with the annoying whelp, this Sesshomaru is now clear on the boy’s intentions and would have your advice.” He replied, ignoring the inflection in her voice. He almost sounded… troubled? “His intentions… and why do you want my advice?” Kagome asked confused. “Miko, you have expressed your ability to meddle in such affairs. The whelp intends on asking Rin’s hand in marriage. This Sesshomaru understands you know the boy and would have your opinion on this situation.” He practically spat that last word out of his mouth. He was clearly not happy about it at all, but she knew how Rin felt. If this was her time, 500 years in the future, the question would be a no brainer, hell to the no. Rin was way too young, but here in the feudal era, she was of the proper age to marry and care for a family. “Kohaku is a good kid. He would care for Rin and their children. He’s visited her here many times and he shows a great deal of compassion towards her. I believe he loves her.” “He stated as much in our discussion, but what of Rin?” “Well, Rin has said that she loves him, too and I think she would be very happy with Kohaku.” Sesshomaru visibly sneered at this and she couldn’t help but think how unflattering it was on his regal features. “What’s wrong, Sesshomaru-sama?” “This Sesshomaru is not pleased with your assessment, but will admit that, perhaps, you are right, Miko.” He let out a very audible sigh and Kagome knew what was troubling him. He had come to care for Rin as a daughter and now that little girl was growing up. He was going to have to give her up and like any prideful father he detested the idea. No boy was good enough for his little girl. “You knew this was going to happen one day, Sesshomaru-sama. She’s turned into a very beautiful young woman and I can’t think of anyone better to be her husband. Besides, I doubt that you are going to let her live her life without some kind of vigil.” “Hn. If that whelp does anything that this Sesshomaru does not approve of again, he will meet his end holding his own bowels.” He all but growled. ‘Again?’ Then it hit her like a ton of bricks. Something had happened and she was sure the ‘discussion’ had been nothing more than a fight. She was suddenly afraid for her friends. Sango was pregnant and Kohaku was just a boy, then there were the twins. Sure Miroku could handle himself, but not against the demon Lord of the West. Oh, great Kami what happened? “Calm yourself, Miko. This Sesshomaru only broke the boys arm and leg. The battle was stopped by your slayer friend. This Sesshomaru has no desire to harm her or her pups. They are well.” He said apparently smelling the fear and apprehension in her scent. “I don’t understand? What happened?” Kagome visibly relaxed, but was still concerned for Kohaku. Sesshomaru had apparently done some serious damage to the boy, but she was relieved to hear it wasn’t life threatening. She couldn’t hide her disbelief when he dropped the third person when he spoke next. “I have been aware of the boy visiting Rin in the village for some time. It was not like she could hide it. I caught his scent on her. She has not told me such and I have not asked. After our last training session, I visited Rin at the old Miko’s hut. Rin had asked if I would send Jaken to retrieve some of her belongings because she wanted to stay longer. I have never been able to deny her anything.” He said with a dark chuckle. Kagome was sure her eyes were going to pop out of her head. This had to be the most she had ever heard him speak at once and he was showing emotion. What was worse, he had laughed. Honestly laughed. She was baffled and couldn’t make head nor tails of what was going on. Why was he saying this, showing this, to her? “I, however, decided to bring her requested items back personally. I found Rin in the forest picking herbs, but before I got to her, I caught her scent on the wind. It had changed and was mingled with that miserable whelp’s.” He finished with dangerous eyes. “I know Kohaku came to visit. That’s probably why she smelled like him, but that still does not explain why you attacked him.” Sesshomaru snarled at this, but calmed quickly when her eyes widened with fear and she gasped. “Perhaps, Miko, you do not understand what I have been telling you. His scent was not just on her, it was in her.” He spat through clenched teeth. Kagome’s fear dissipated and understanding widened her eyes even further. “Oh, so that’s why. Does Rin know that you know? I mean, you can smell…that?” Kagome was having a hard time processing everything. ‘Wow, what an overload of information.’ “Rin does not. I am sure she would not have been pleased with what my plans were. However, after giving it much thought, I came to you for advice on my next steps. I agree with what you have said and believe that it is for the best, considering it was the whelp that took her virtue. He is a nuisance, but does exhibit some honor, after all, he did make his claim known without fear and Miko.” He said suddenly locking his golden eyes to hers to gain her full attention. “Yes, I can.” She averted her eyes quickly and her face flamed. She was innocent in that way. InuYasha was the only one she had ever kissed and that had only happened once. He had said that on purpose just to embarrass her. Gods, he was acting strange and she wanted to crawl in a hole somewhere. “Come, Miko. It is time to take you home.” He rose to his feet gracefully and waited for her to stand as well. She heeded his silent request and they were airborne once more. It could have just been her imagination, but it seemed as if he held her a little tighter than the last time. Impossible, she was just over exaggerating this because of his uncharacteristic behavior moments ago. She just supposed everyone needed a friend now and again, even the great Lord of the West. They landed in front of the hut and Sesshomaru released her. “This Sesshomaru is grateful for your advice. We will resume our training in two weeks. Have a pleasant night, Miko.” She barely registered his words. Was he smiling? What the hell was going on with him? “Uh, see you in two weeks, Sesshomaru-sama.” She managed, finally, in a small voice with a bow. When she stood up, he was gone. ‘What a night.’
Kouga had spent all morning giving out orders for the final preparations for the Autumn Festival. Most plans had gone off without a hitch. The tribal craftsmen were busy making the tables to hold the food and were making great progress. The logs for the great bonfire had been cut and there was enough to ensure that the fire would rage non-stop all week. The small group of females that he assigned to prepare the food, were already halfway done with smoking the meats. He would send hunters out tomorrow before the festival began to gather fresh kills for those who liked their food raw. All in all, everything was going well, except the sake issue. “How hard is it to get thirteen more barrels of the stuff? Ginta, you know what happened last year. Kouga’s going to be pissed when he finds out.” Hakkaku said to his brother. “Well, we’ve got the rest of the day to come up with it and what Kouga doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Ginta replied smugly. “What do I not need to know?” Kouga’s gruff voice flowed from behind the conspiring brothers. “GAYAAA! Damn, Kouga, I didn’t know you were there. Don’t do that!” Ginta heaved through ragged breaths. “Oh, it’s really nothing to worry about. You know, just a few barrels short of the good stuff.” Hakkaku answered. “Let me guess you’re having problems and can’t find anymore? I refuse to deal with another drunken riot this year. I’ll handle it. You two are coming with me, understand?” He stood and marched over to where Saburo stood talking to one of the females with Ginta and Hakkaku following close behind. “Saburo, I need to leave for a while to get some supplies for tomorrow. I’m leaving you in charge while I’m gone. I will be back before sundown tomorrow.” “You can count on me, Kouga.” Saburo replied with a small bow. Then he grinned and clapped Kouga on the shoulder. “By the way, what do you want me to tell Ayame when she comes looking for you?” He just loved to tease Kouga about his unwanted shadow and he always took any opportunity presented. “I don’t care what you say to her, but she’s not to leave the protection of the pack. I mean it, Saburo. Don’t let her follow me this time.” Kouga replied with authority. Saburo just grinned as the three wolves walked away. Saburo was the second strongest in the pack. Even though they had fought for leadership in the beginning, Kouga and the white wolf had become fast friends. He was loyal, reliable, and he always put the pack first. Before the union, Saburo’s pack was one of the few prosperous tribes. It was a no brainer to make him Beta, but sometimes Kouga just wanted to hurt him. He would do everything in his power to force more attention from Ayame on Kouga. After a successful attempt, he would roar with laughter. Saburo knew about Kagome. Kouga always deflected the questions as to why he wouldn’t mate Ayame, but one particular day Saburo decided that he was going to tell him the truth. They went hunting and Kouga spilled his guts after much needling from his friend. For the most part Saburo was sympathetic until they got back to the pack and he started his devious plots again. Kouga swore they had gotten worse after his little confession, but he knew the white wolf meant well, even if it was backhanded as hell and for his own personal amusement. They had already ran the nearby villages dry of their supplies of sake and the other villages were less than welcoming to a band of wolf demons. Kouga couldn’t really blame them considering his former actions towards humans. The amount of sake consumed during the weeklong celebration was staggering, but it was the only time of year that everyone could set their daily duties aside and just have fun. He knew there was only one place they could go and be able to get back in time for the festivities. He would have to go to Edo. Last year the same issue came up, but he hadn’t wanted to venture so close to her. The consequences to saving what little sanity he had left in the Kagome department left him reeling, literally. He ended up, with the help of Saburo, having to tie over a third of the drunken pack up. They had become outraged when the flow of liquor stopped and had started making too much trouble and wouldn’t listen to reason. Big surprise. When they set fire to the banquet table, that’s when Kouga physically restrained them. Most were still carrying out their punishments. This year, however, he wasn’t going to go through that again. He would just suck up his pride and face her like he hadn’t missed her at all, like he didn’t think about her constantly, like his love for her hadn’t ripped his soul into shreds. He wouldn’t bring her unnecessary pain over his own sufferings. She was mated to the mutt and he knew she had to be proud of it. He also knew that if she found out how he was suffering, she would feel guilty. That’s just the kind soul she was and he wouldn’t have it. She deserved happiness in every part of her life, even if it wasn’t with him and he would do what little was left in his power to ensure that. They were met by two girls when they entered the village of Edo. One was tall and had black shoulder length hair and the other younger girl was familiar to Kouga, but he just couldn’t place her. “Kouga-san!” The young girl with the side ponytail said running up to Kouga with pure happiness in her eyes. “Kouga-san, don’t you remember me? I know it’s been a long time, but you saved me from that centipede demon, remember?” That’s when it hit him. This was Lord Sesshomaru’s ward, Rin, all grown up. Kouga did the only thing his arrogant pride would allow him to do, he lied. “How could I forget you, Rin? Say kid, how’ve you been and what are you doing here and not with Lord Sesshomaru?” Kouga asked with a cocky smirk. “Sesshomaru-sama brings me here to train as a healer with Lady Kaede and for basic education with Lady Kagome. Did you come for my wedding?” “Wedding? It has been a long time. No, I didn’t know about it. I came for some other reason, but congratulations, kid all the same. So, who is the lucky fella?” The young girl blushed at his compliment. “Oh, it’s Kohaku. You know Sango’s younger brother. Your still invited though, the whole pack too. We have a few weeks left because Kohaku needs to heal. He’s not able to walk right now.” She replied sadly. “Not able to walk? What happened?” He watched as Rin’s eyes misted over. That’s when the other girl walked up. “Sesshomaru-sama didn’t approve of their courtship at first so he broke the boys arm and leg in several places. The only thing that saved his life was the boy’s older sister.” She said quietly with an arm round Rin’s shoulders. “Well, I can’t say I’m surprised, but at least he lived. Come on, kid, cheer up. That’s just how a father acts towards a boy that likes his little girl. Only yours just happens to be the great and terrible Lord of the West.” Kouga said with a chuckle. “Well, I guess you’re right. Lady Kagome talked him into giving his blessing for the union and he promised not to hurt Kohaku anymore, but he still doesn’t like him.” Rin said with a sniffle. “Oh, I’m being rude, Kouga-san, this is my friend, Aiko. Aiko, this is Kouga-san, the leader of the eastern wolf demon tribe.” Aiko bowed out of respect and he returned it in kind. “Oi, Aiko! Don’t bow to that mangy wolf! He ain’t nobody!” InuYasha yelled approaching the little group. “Stupid dog.” Kouga muttered under his breath. “Asshole!” InuYasha retorted when he reached them. “Mutt-face, hey who do I gotta talk to about making a trade for supplies around here?” Kouga sneered. He didn’t want to deal with InuYasha at the moment, but it looked like he had no choice. He had to get the sake and get back before tomorrow. “You trade for shit? What, you ain’t coming here to eat the whole damn village and take what you want?” InuYasha said returning the sneer. Some things never change. “InuYasha!” Aiko said surprised. “You know better than such things. Lady Kagome said that he had changed his ways a long time ago and she would not be pleased to hear you speak about Kouga-san in such a way.” Kouga’s ego swelled at the thought of Kagome talking about him and apparently made it very clear that no one was to besmirch his character. That settled it mutt or no mutt he wanted to see her. It was great to know that he hadn’t been forgotten after all these years. “Oi, what the hell do I care what Kagome thinks, wench. Besides, she ain’t fuckin’ here.” InuYasha spat. Well, that deflated his mood on many levels. He couldn’t believe that the baka would speak about Kagome in such a way, but then again when did he ever show her the proper respect she deserved. Kouga had hoped that if they were mated that InuYasha would treat her a little better. Apparently that just wasn’t the case. He had to bite back a growl at the thought of his love being mistreated, but it was her choice. He swore he wouldn’t get involved, but that didn’t stop the anger or the vivid mental pictures of a bleeding and broken hanyou at his feet. Then there was the fact that Kagome wasn’t in the village at all. He wouldn’t be able to see her or take in her sweet scent. Perhaps it was for the best. He really didn’t think he could see her with the damn mutt and he would prefer her scent to be purely Kagome, not mixed with InuYasha’s stench. “You can talk to Lady Kaede about supplies, Kouga-san. Come on I’ll take you to her.” Rin said energetically. Kouga, Hakkaku, and Ginta followed the young girl to the old Miko’s hut, leaving Aiko and InuYasha behind. “Rin, who have ye brought to this old woman?” Kaede asked as the four of them entered her hut. “Lady Kaede, this is Kouga-san of the demon wolf tribe. You know the one Lady Kagome talks about. And the other two are…I’m sorry.” “Hehehe…Sesshomaru-sama would not be pleased with ye lack of attention to Kagome’s lessons, child.” The old Miko’s eye twinkled with amusement. “I’m Hakkaku and this is my brother, Ginta. Don’t worry about it, kid.” He piped up happily. “It is a pleasure to meet ye all. Kagome speaks very highly of ye. Tell me what this old Miko can do for ye.” “We have a festival tomorrow night and we need to purchase about thirteen barrels of sake, if you have it on hand.” Kouga said “I think we can manage that. Rin take them to see Daichi.” Kaede said. Kouga bowed to her. “Thank you, Lady Miko for your assistance.” Kouga said and turned to leave the hut. “Kouga-san, can I ask ye a question?” Kaede asked before he followed the other three outside. “Of course. What do you want to know?” “We all have heard about ye and ye pack brothers from Kagome. Why is it ye have not visited her here?” “She …uh…it’s not that I don’t want to see her. I just don’t want to intrude in her life here.” Kouga stammered, taken off guard by her sudden question. “Why is it ye would think ye would interfere? Is it because of InuYasha?” Kaede asked genuinely curious. “What?! I ain’t afraid of that stupid mutt!” Kouga yelled, incensed that the old woman would think he would be intimidated by the hanyou. “Calm ye self. I did not mean that you were afraid of InuYasha. I simply think maybe ye have not come around because ye think something that is not so.” Kaede answered calmly. “What do you mean?” Kouga asked slightly confused. ‘What had Kagome told everyone?’ “Kagome has lost her family, Shippo has left the village, the slayer and monk no longer reside here, and even though InuYasha lives in the village, he is intended to be married to Aiko. Kagome puts every one before herself, but I am afraid that the price will be too great. I have heard her talk of ye and your pack brothers and I believe it will do her good to see ye all sometime, maybe it will remind her that not everyone has left her behind.” With that the old Miko exited the hut, leaving a dumbfounded ookami prince behind.
