Kagome trudged back through the woodline towards the once cheery fire that now burned like a beacon of her doom. What could she tell them? She understood Sesshoumaru’s desire for privacy but she also knew her friends would want answers. Come she had but couldn’t give and those she herself really didn’t understand. Inuyasha stepped out of the shadows then, “What was that about?” She smiled brightly but felt like her face might crack, “Terms.” “And those would be?” “Let’s get back so I only have to say it all once ok?” Inuyasha nodded, walking close enough to brush her arm with his own, his eyes were downcast and he seemed troubled. “Inuyasha?” Kagome asked softly, “What’s wrong?” He peered over at her from under his lashes, “Nothing. I don’t trust him.” Kagome sighed, “I think it will be ok Inuyasha.” She soothed. He tossed his silver hair and stomped ahead of her to the firelight. There was a hot knot of dread and anger curling tightly in his gut. He had no illusions that Sesshoumaru would want to take Kagome away. Knowing her, the idiot probably agreed since he had saved her life. That gave Inuyasha very little wiggle room to fight that action. Kagome knew nothing about demon customs, hell even he didn’t know them all. This was going to be bad. Sango and Miroku sprang up when Kagome stepped into the light, bombarding her with questions and creating a chaotic cacophony in the clearing. Kagome put her hands out in front of her and motioned everyone back. “Everyone calm down” she said, “I can’t even start to answer your questions when I can’t hear what they are.” The others sank down to the logs they only just vacated. Kagome smoothed her skirt as she sat down opposite them, Shippo climbed into her lap and she cuddled him closer. “Sesshoumaru has some shards” she announced, not really knowing where to begin. I guess they are defiled pretty badly and he asked me to go to his fortress and purify them as well as remove them from his halls.” Sango and Miroku blinked owlish eyes at her, “Well…” Miroku chirped, “That isn’t so bad then. When do we leave?” Kagome sighed, “There’s more. Lots more.” She did her best to formulate a reason that stuck as closely to the truth as possible and would cause less worry for her friends. “So you see, Sesshoumaru just needs a hand with Rin for the time being.” “But Kagome” Shippo asked, scenting the half-truth, “What about the jewel?” “Well he did say that while I am with him we can keep looking. With two groups searching instead of one; we are bound to work faster.” Miroku sensed her turmoil but said nothing of it, “This agreement for the night of the new moon. You want to make sure Inuyasha is protected don’t you?” She nodded despite the rude Keh and rumbles from beside her. “Naraku has been getting braver lately and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that twice now we’ve had visits from his incarnations during Inuyasha’s period of vulnerability.” “I agree” Sango chimed in, “We can’t believe that Kagura has shared the information with Naraku or he surely would have attacked in force at that time. I think he is trying to confirm, we barely managed last time. That was very thoughtful Kagome, to ask for something like that.” “I don’t need prince high and might stick up his ass doin me no favors.” Inuyasha grumped, “I have gotten by just fine this far without him, let him go back to his fortress and leave me alone.” “Inuyasha, you can’t keep being so stubborn about this.” Miroku told him, “It is only a matter of time before Naraku knows without a doubt when you are vulnerable.” “I’ll kick his ass too” “Isn’t that what we’ve been trying to do?” Shippo asked, “Seems like some mutual ass kicking if you ask me.” “Shippo.” Kagome warned, “Language.” “Sorry.” “You didn’t have to agree to go with him you know? You are an idiot, what were you thinking?” Inuyasha demanded towering over Kagome. “I was thinking I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him. I can at least help out a little to repay that.” Kagome snapped. She knew that Inuyasha had gone to Kikyo as she lay there. Locked in that fiery hell that was her slow death. She knew he wanted information from the priestess but his not being there made her heart feel as though large iron bands had been wrapped around it and tightened whenever she thought of that. She walked over and rummaged through her pack for a moment, drawing out several items and tucking them in a smaller bag. “I’m leaving my pack here. Most of what is inside of it is for you anyway. I am only taking what I’ll need for now. Inuyasha, try and go easy on the ramen… I won’t be able to get you more for a while.” Her voice cracked as she thought of leaving them behind. She mentally smacked herself, this was her choice, she had agreed to it. No sense crying about it now. “You ain’t goin” Inuyasha said then, “He can bring those damn shards here and that little girl is his issue. Not yours.” Kagome met his eyes, there was hurt and anger there. “I’m sorry Inuyasha. Please don’t make this harder for me. Come to the fortress in a few days’ time?” He shoved his hands into his sleeve and opened his mouth, ready to verbally filet the woman before him when Sesshoumaru came into view. “Inuyasha” he intoned, his smooth baritone moving over them like winter water over smooth rocks, “Just because you have no sense of honor doesn’t mean that you may void our agreement. The miko shall remain with me for the specified time. Miko. We are leaving.” His cloud began to form beneath his feet and he motioned Kagome to stand beside him. She waved and blinked back tears as the wispy fluff began to lift. She shifted unexpectedly ad grabbed onto Sesshoumaru to steady herself. He gave her a cold look but said nothing as she settled herself once more. Sitting on his cloud watching the trees and fire grow smaller and smaller until the tiny orange glint was impossible to see. “Miko” Sesshoumaru began, “There is much to learn before we arrive.” “I have a name” she bit out, “Its Kagome. I am not going to spend 5 months answering to ‘miko’”. His eyes narrowed for a moment, “So be it. Ka..gome.” From the way he said it, she imagined it was not palatable to his tongue in the least. “Thank you” she said quietly. “Hn” “These things I need to learn. What are they?” “Things that will keep you alive and my lands from war.” “Wha..” “Demon society is ruled by specific customs and ritual. To disregard these spells disaster. This one shall lay out basic rules for you to follow, pay attention as this Sesshoumaru dislikes repeating himself.” “Why can’t you just refer to yourself in first person?” Kagome blurted out, “Instead of this one or this Sesshoumaru…why don’t you just say I?” He blinked and turned his face back to the moonlit skyscape, “This one has no need to explain. This Sesshoumaru does not conduct himself for the sake of himself but for those who are ruled by him.” Kagome blinked at the formal words but understood well enough, Sesshoumaru as a demon lord was not free to live beyond those rules and rituals. He couldn’t be an individual with individual concerns; he had to be an individual with the concerns of his people first. “First.” He had begun his instruction, “You must not speak with or touch males beyond my presence. Demon males are territorial. To show interest, even perceived, to any male could very well land you marked and mated with no recourse.” She shuddered at the thought. “You are human. Not the only one in residence but most are servants. You would do well to watch your tongue within the fortress. This one has no time to settle petty disputes and squabbles. Should you be grievously offended, your alpha shall rectify the issue.” Kagome was sure this would be the end of her. Her temper often got the better of her. “Do not wander the palace beyond the area this one allows you, not all demons are so accepting of a lesser species.” “Why you…” “And lastly Kagome. You must never disagree or fight this one on anything publically.” “But what if you are totally wrong?” “This is unlikely. However should you choose to take issue it will be done privately and not in hearing for viewing of others. Do you understand?” Kagome nodded. She didn’t exactly like these high handed dictates but she knew there must be a reason for them. She sighed, “I will do my best Sesshoumaru” she told him honestly, “I don’t appreciate being called or considered a lesser species. I’m bound to tell someone off.” “Do not.” “I have the right to defend myself and my own sense of honor.” She snapped. “You don’t” he said in that icy tone, “Should such a thing arise, your alpha is responsible for doing so.” “Is that right?” she drawled, “Just where should I go to find this oh so great alpha? Or will he be assigned to me as well? Some great growling babysitter...” Sesshoumaru blinked, “This one is that babysitter.” he informed her. Kagome turned eight shades of red and several hues of blue. Her mouth gaped like a fish on land. Small sputtering sounds erupted from time to time. Sesshoumaru might have thought it was slightly amusing. Slightly, if he wasn’t so certain this human was about to turn things upside down. “Close your mouth Kagome.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
