Chapter 2:
Kagome stood and began her trek back into the village. Unlike when she arrived there were few villagers in site and those out of their homes were quiet and watchful. Kagome passed through the village with her head up to allow the villagers to see her face and avoid an unwanted reaction. She saw Kaede’s hut in the distance and paused in her steps. Shippo glanced up and saw the worried look in her eyes. “It’s okay oka-san.” Kagome started a bit and looked down at him with a sad smile. “This night is not going to go well Shippo. Promise me something; if things get really bad I want you to promise that you will leave the village and find a safe place to hide for the night. I don’t think I could bear for you to get hurt.” Shippo nodded after a moment’s hesitation. Kagome smiled and nodded back before continuing toward the hut again. Kirara was waiting just outside the door as they approached the hut. With a ‘meow’ she raced into the building. Kagome and Shippo entered a few moments later. Inuyasha was sitting in the back corner with Kikyo. Sango and Miroku were talking quietly next to the cooking pot. Kaede was nowhere to be seen. Kagome set her bag next to the doorway and sat opposite of Sango and Miroku. “Sango, where is Kaede?” Sango looked up from her conversation and glanced around. “I guess she stepped out for a minute. She mentioned needing to get something. She should be back soon.” Kagome looked down at Shippo and smiled. “Would you mind waiting for Kaede outside?” Shippo nodded his head and ran from the hut. Kagome smiled after him and nodded to herself. She turned her attention to the cooking pot and noticed no one had touched it since she got here, so she reached out to stir the stew. “Keep your hands to yourself.” Kagome stopped just short of the spoon and looked at Inuyasha. The entire hut grew silent and Kagome felt the night creeping in on her. Kagome shrugged and finished the move toward the spoon. Inuyasha started growling quietly. Kagome swung her gaze once more to the hanyou with a raised eyebrow. “Is there something I can help you with?” Inuyasha began to stand before Kikyo placed a hand on his arm. Kagome chuckled to herself and she returned to tending the stew. The next thing she knew Inuyasha was lunging at her. Kagome’s power’s immediately kicked in and a barrier was placed around her and the cooking pot. He knocked into the barrier and landed in a couch just beyond the edge. Kikyo seemed interested in what was happening but did not look like she was going to intervene. “I suggest you keep to yourself, wench.” Inuyasha growled with his head bent. Kagome smiled sadly at him before shaking her head and standing. “You do not understand Inuyasha. You do not understand at all what you have done. I am not from this time, from this place. My powers are blessed by Midoriko and far more superior to Kikyo’s abilities, even when she was alive. You have struck me, isolated me from yourself and then you brought her into our midst,” Kagome paused and shook her head again. Inuyasha hunkered down further, ready to strike at any moment. “I am done following you around and allowing you to dictate to me. In the morning I am leaving to search for jewel shards without you. See if she can be any more help than I was and we shall see who comes running back first. But known this Inuyasha, if I see her again after this night I will kill her and take back that which belongs to me.” Kagome lowered her barrier and let loose a purifying blast at Inuyasha as he lunged for her. The blast hit him squarely in the chest, knocking him backward and onto Kikyo. Kikyo tried to scramble out from under him but was stuck under his weight. Inuyasha was out cold. Kagome sat next to the cooking pot and stared at her hands, waiting. Sango started to laugh and Kagome raised her head slowly to watch her. Miroku was also smiling but trying to hide his mouth behind his hand. “Miroku, help Kikyo out from under him, please.” Miroku bowed slightly from his seat before standing and lifting Inuyasha enough to allow her to slip out. She then stood, and with a colder than death look, walked from the building. “I wish you had come back a few weeks ago and done that to him.” Miroku, with his face under control, nodded his agreement. “So, Kagome-sama, when do we leave in the morning?” Kagome’s mouth hung open as she stared at the two of them. “B-But….” Miroku smiled at her and shook his head a bit. “You didn’t honestly think that we would let you go wondering off by yourself, did you? We are family. You’re our sister and that means that we have to help look out for you. So, when do we leave?” Kagome’s eye’s filled with tears as she looked at them. “Guys… Thank you. We leave after first light.” She glanced once at Inuyasha and sighed. “You know that when he wakes up I’m going to be in a lot of trouble. I don’t really want to hurt him.” Sango moved around the fire pit and settled next to her. “He won’t do anything to you with us there as well. If he tries it we can fend him off fairly well.” Kagome smiled at them and nodded. Suddenly Shippo ran back into the hut and shot straight for Kagome. “Oka-san! Kikyo is attacking Kaede! Hurry!” Kagome jumped to her feet and ran out the hut to see Kaede on the ground holding a sword close to her chest has Kikyo tried to grab for it. “It is not for ye!” Kaede said as she pulled the weapon closer to her chest. Kikyo reached out and made a grab for it as Kagome tackled her from the side. Kikyo screeched and began clawing at her. Kagome screamed as Kikyo dug her nails deep into her arm. Kagome scrambled up from the ground and stood protectively in front of Kaede. “What do you think you’re doing, Kikyo? This is Kaede!” Kikyo stood and faced her quietly. Sango and Miroku stood just outside the hut looking on. Shippo was behind Kagome with Kaede. The night became silent and the darkness began to seep closer to the group, its arms quietly reaching for them. After a few moments Kikyo stepped forward. Kagome tensed and dropped into a defensive stance. Kikyo smiled. “You really think that you are going to be able to defend against me?” Kikyo stepped forward again and Kagome tensed. “I will not allow you to harm her. Great Kami, Kikyo, she is your sister!” Kikyo snarled at her and lunged. Kagome saw the move coming and did nothing to dodge. Sango cried out as Kikyo collided with her. She grunted under the additional weight as she spun quickly on her foot to push Kikyo through the lunge and back away from her. Kikyo spun and narrowed her eyes as she studied the girl. Kagome waited for the next move patiently. Kikyo took a step closer and then took two back. Kagome raised her eye brow and continued to wait. She slowly shifted her stance into one of focus in order to channel her miko powers if she was forced to. Kikyo shook her head and turned from them and began to walk away. Kagome didn’t drop her stance and she watched Kikyo take several steps and then stop. Kikyo looked back over her shoulder and stared at Kaede. Kagome began to gather power into her stance. (What are you waiting for Kikyo? This isn’t over. You and I both know that you have at least one more move left.) Kikyo turned slowly back toward the two women. Then without warning she blasted a huge amount of spiritual power toward them. Sango and Miroku cried out as it barreled toward Kagome. Kagome let her eyes slip closed as her arms and hands followed an intricate pattern in the air. Her hands were moving demon fast as she sketched the shield. Then her eyes flew open as she made the last pattern. A large shield of bright white light appeared in front of Kagome a bare second before Kikyo’s blast reached her. She kept her hands toward the shield, supply it with energy and power as her feet were pushed back in the dirt. She stopped her backward slide just inches from Shippo and Kaede. Once Kikyo’s blast had expended all of its energy it simply dispersed. Kagome lowered her hands and the shield shimmered and faded. Kikyo stood looking at her in awe and disgust. No one made a sound as Kagome straightened and half turned from Kikyo. She glanced back at Kaede. "Are you okay?" Kaede nodded. Kagome looked blankly at Kikyo before turning completely to help Kaede stand. She suddenly felt a pulse and without thinking, grabbed the handle of the sword Kaede held close to her chest, drew and turned to stop just before the dead miko's neck. "Go Kikyo, now; before I decide to take back what is rightfully mine." Kikyo stumbled back before turning and running from the village. Kagome stood for a few more moments before dropping the sword to the ground and falling to her knees beside it. Sango came running up but stopped a few feet away as Kagome buried her face in her hands. “Gomen,” she whispered between her fingers. “Gomen-asai.” Kaede laid her hand of the back of her head as a bright blue light surrounded them. A few moments later the light faded and Kagome was standing with Kaede, her head downcast. Miroku walked past Sango and bowed deeply to the women. “My Lady, I am honored. I had no idea.” Kagome raised her head and looked sadly at Miroku. Kagome’s eyes were filled with the deep colors of the ocean, blues swirling around each other and constantly changing. Upon her forehead was a bright blue tear drop. Miroku looked up and smiled gently at her. “I will treat you no different should that be your wish.” Kagome nodded slightly. Miroku’s smile widened as he straightened. Kagome swung her gaze to Sango and waited. “You have always had the power. I have felt it in my own way. Although the reaction of the monk leads me to believe that this is somehow more significant?” Kagome nodded slightly. Sango nodded in return and smiled. “You will always be Kagome to me.” Kagome rushed forward and enfolded her in a hug. Then she turned back to Kaede and Shippo and smiled her first real smile of the night. Shippo jumped from Kaede into Kagome’s arms and smiled up at her. Kaede smiled and picked up the sword from where it lay on the ground before turning and walking back into the hut. “How long have you known, little one?” Shippo shrugged. “How long has oka-san known?” Kagome giggled and hugged him close. Sango looked around at everyone and frowned slightly. “I’m a little confused Kagome. Why was this so important that you had to hide it from everyone?” Kagome’s smile faded as she stared into the distance. “My family comes from a very powerful line of priests and priestesses. Every few centuries there a priest, or priestess, that is born who is said to be able to surpass even the boundaries of Human and Demon.” Sango frowned again. “But what does that mean?” A deep voice came from the shadows, “It means that she is a tenshi.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
