Chapter 3: Pancakes?
The next morning Kagome was the first one up. Not surprising given that she was used to waking up at the crack of dawn every morning. Actually she had slept in, it was almost 8:30. Since Shizuru wasn’t up and her lug head of a cousin wasn’t home yet Kagome decided to start on making breakfast. Luckily Shizuru knew Kagome was coming and had stocked the fridge.
Kagome was in full production mode when Kuwabara came bursting through the front door. “Sis! I’m back!” he shouted goofily.
“Shhh! She’s still sleeping!” Kagome said trying not to add to the noise. She quickly noticed the other three men standing in the doorway behind him. ‘Hm…strange bunch, a hanyou, an avatar, and a demon…”
Kuwabara turned to look at Kagome as if she had two heads. It took him a moment to recognize her before confusion turned to excitement. “Kagome! I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“Shhh! Didn’t I just tell you she’s sleeping. And yeah it’s been a while.” She smiled and gave him a hug.
“Hey looks like your cooking breakfast for an army. Did sis tell you the guys were coming with me?” Kuwabara looked confused again.
Kagome looked back at the mass of food she had just been preparing, and quickly flipped the pancakes before turning back to him. “He he, well actually I just kind of went on autopilot while I was cooking. I didn’t really think about how much I was making. I’ll have to pay more attention next time. But since there’s plenty, why don’t you invite them to stay for breakfast?”
Kagome then turned to the three guys behind Kuwabara. The one with the slicked back hair was obviously the leader. He was giving her the weirdest look like he couldn’t figure out what was going on. The red headed avatar was a curiosity, she couldn’t wait to find out what kind of avatar he was, though she had a guess. The third member, the demon, was glaring at her. He was shorter that the others, though that didn’t mean much to her, she was still a few inches shorter than him. She couldn’t read what type of demon he was though. His aura seemed to clash with itself in a way she had never seen before.
“Oh, sure.” Kuwabara turned to the guys. “Well first I should probably introduce them, huh? Haha, well you might remember Yusuke, this is Kurama, and shorty over in the corner is Hiei. Guys this is my cousin Kagome.” As he said this he pointed to them one by one.
“Nice to meet you. So, who wants pancakes?” Kagome asked cheerfully.
After everyone got their share of food except for Hiei who had made an excuse about not being hungry. They all sat around the table eating when Kagome asked “So where have you been?” as she turned to Kuwabara.
He then turned quickly to Kagome. “Didn’t Sis tell you?” He asked, hoping that his sister had come up with an excuse for his absence.
“Oh yeah, she said you were staying at a friend’s.” Kagome quickly remembered. Though she had a distinct feeling that wasn’t the real story.
Kuwabara was super relived, it was even a bit obvious. Yusuke was eyeing Kagome. Something was off about her. She didn’t see out of the ordinary, but the energy he was reading from her seemed…off… Like some of it was missing? Kurama and Hiei were both looking at her with interest as well.
“So Sis says you’ve been sick allot lately. You ok now?” Kuwabara asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Mom and gramps like to make a bigger deal of stuff than it is.” Kagome hoped that would cover for now. He was giving her that I don’t believe it look. “ So how have you been? Still struggling at school?”
“Yeah well, it’s hard to keep up with missing so much school..” Kuwabara chuckled, leaning back and rubbing the back of his head.
“Missing school? Have you been skipping again?” Kagome was giving him that motherly disapproving look.
The guys (minus Hiei of coarse) were all looking back and forth between each other. Kuwabara was just mentally kicking himself. “Well…you know… Anyways what’s with the new clothes didn’t you use to always were pink?”
Kagome couldn’t help but think ‘not this again’ but instead she exasperatedly said “Yeah, when I was six and my mom was still picking out all of my clothes!”
After that the conversation died down a bit while the guys ate and Kagome nibbled on her food. Kagome was trying to figure out how she was going to figure out what was going on with her cousin and his demon friends without having to tell them about her time traveling adventures when she notices a chunk of something stuck to the back of Kuwabara’s jacket. “Eww, what’s that stuck to your jacket!” Kagome made sure to cringe as she pointed to what she was pretty sure was a chunk of flesh. “Is that flesh?!”
“What? Oh that’s just from the demon…” Kuwabara had taken off his jacket to examine the offending piece of flesh, before taking it to dump in the trash. However he caught himself mid sentence as he realized what he had just said.
Kuwabara immediately turned back to Kagome, in hope that she hadn’t noticed his slip. Kurama turned to Hiei assuming that the fire demon was using the jagan to try and cover up the slip. All Kurama noticed was confusion on Hiei’s face. ‘Hiei what’s wrong?’
‘Hn, she’s somehow blocking the jagan… I can’t get into her thoughts’
‘well maybe she’s psychic. It does seem to run in their family.’
‘To block the jagan would require training. There’s something she’s not telling us.’
Kagome was a little annoyed at the attempt at intruding on her thoughts and knew that after blocking it that she’d have to step carefully or the jig would be up. She had already decided that she would tell them…IF she decided she could trust them. But back to the matter at hand. “Did you just say demon?! Kuwabara what’s going on?”
“Ah ah ah ah ah…” He just kept looking around then focused on Yusuke and stared at him.
Yusuke to the hint. “Sorry, we spent the night playing video games until really late, he’s probably just sleep deprived.” Everyone stared at Yusuke now. No one expected such a smooth answer from him.
“Then where did that…chunk of…whatever it was…come from?” Kagome asked. Wow they were making this hard.
“Well, how am I supposed to know? For all we know it fell off of something and onto him on our way here?” Yusuke was starting to get red in the face.
There little battle of lies was interrupted however when everyone in the room tensed…
