Tokyo-1941
Inuyasha’s visit was set through till the end of his winter break, and during this time Sango and her elder brother became inseparable. He paid to go to the cinema, to lunches, and to act as chauffeur in his mother’s car. Because Kagome’s and Sango’s daily routines often intertwined, the girl who generally tended to avoid all masculine company was regularly forced to put up with a very cocky, very witty, very playful hanyou.
He never missed an opportunity to tease her or tug at her pony tail or correct her mistakes. There were intervals when she would hear not a word from him besides an occasional “keh”—he would be lost in a book or apparently so deep in thought he saw fit to ignore her completely, but there were plenty of times they would begin to debate while Sango watched on, unsure of how to intervene.
It was always over stupid things, like interpretations of a classic novel or philosophy or even the merits of different movies and radio programs. He always tried to impress her with his extensive knowledge of history, which was his major at the university he attended in America, and seemed to brighten at the possibility of arguing with her. Kagome found herself wondering who she would fight with after he departed back at the beginning of the New Year.
Despite his rude behavior and unsolicited opinions, nearly two weeks after their initial meeting, Kagome had to admit that she felt a little in awe of the boy who wound such tales and yarns and who made her laugh nearly as much as he made her stomp off in frustration. Physically, she still found herself as aroused by him as that first moment she saw him.
Kagome walked up the winding path that led to Sango's house, a stolid two-storied dwelling on a sprawling patch of hillside. She was constantly leaving her belongings everywhere and was on a mission to retrieve a pair of her mother's earrings- which she had borrowed- and subsequently left on Sango's bedside table.
The day was blustery and cold, bringing a stinging pink to her cheeks and whipping the hair around her face. Her lithe form took the wind in stride, and she gaily jumped the steps two at a time. She made it to the door, lifting her hand to knock, when the door opened and she hit the chest of a young man in a long sleeved white thermal shirt. The cuffs of his pants were rolled and his bare feet contrasted against the worn denim.
“Aye!” Kagome cried, while pulling her arm away from his chest. Her mouth pursed in a straight line and she clasped her hands against her pounding heart. “I'm sorry!”
“Nothin' to be sorry for. I heard ya coming and it's not the kind of weather you want to be standing in. It looks like snow,” he angled to the side to allow her entrance. Kagome stepped into the dark, chill house, and Inuyasha shut the door behind her. The space was unusually quiet. Kagome turned around to face the handsome hanyou.
“Sango in her room?”
“Nah, she left with mom to the store. They should be back soon, though, if you wanna hang around ‘till then.”
Kagome looked at Inuyasha with uncertainty. He walked past her, towards the direction of the kitchen.
“I'm making some food if you're hungry. Wait in there with me. It's gotta be an ice box upstairs, and I've got my old man's heater on full blast.” He didn't turn around, but delayed with his back turned towards her in the doorway that separated the front room from the kitchen. He held the swinging door open and Kagome entered through, first, into the warm and inviting room.
She felt the rush of air behind her as he followed her in, the door swinging after him. Adjusting to the warmth, she sat at one of the stools set around the large, wooden island block that Sango's mother used to prepare meals and where the girls often studied and ate. He was right. The kitchen was very warm and a welcomed change from the bitter weather outside. Kagome saw he was making ramen noodles and a quick whiff sent the salty scent of beef pricking at her nose.
“Want some?” he asked, working at the stove.
“Yes, thank you.”
He set a bowl, with two chopsticks visible through the steam, down in front of her. “Thanks,” she said, busy concentrating on the contents of her meal and unable to look at him. He sat across from her, his back nearly touching the wall.
Kagome expertly wound her noodles around the utensils and took a bite.
Sensing eyes upon her, she looked up. And to be sure, he sat perched upon his stool, head cocked, staring at her as she chewed. When he did not break away from her look, she opened her mouth in an attempt to ease her fluttering insides.
“So, where did Sango go?” That seemed to turn his attention towards his food.
“Shopping.” he inhaled the steaming ramen, his hair tied in a thick, loose braid behind his back. Kagome gawked at the white mass between bites. She wanted to touch it, to run her fingers through, to lose herself behind the veil she knew he could create, and…
Stop Kagome! She willed herself. No hentai thoughts about your best friend's brother. Kagome pursed her lips in defeat and finished the last of the noodles. She debated whether or not to drink the broth just to show him how much she enjoyed the meal, but decided to try to not look too much like a glutton.
“Inuyasha, thank you for the ramen,” Kagome sat up and walked to the sink. She was a little flushed from the warm kitchen, and so after rinsing off the dishes, she unwrapped her scarf and began to unbutton her coat.
“So, how do you like being back in Tokyo?” she placed her scarf on the little shelf above a row of hooks nailed into the wall. She smiled brightly, in an attempt to hide her nerves. She looked up from her task, and again found him staring at her. Her fingers struggled with the buttons- she couldn't take her eyes away from his.
“Keh, just fine,” he shrugged, holding her stare. “It's more crowded than I remembered, but everyone is nice enough. Well, mostly.” He snorted and looked down.
“That's not what Sango says....” Kagome teased in a sing-song voice, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
Inuyasha took the bait. “Yeah? Well, what does she say?” Definitely interested.
“Just that you’ve already gotten into a fight and it was ‘cuz you whistled at a human girl and her boyfriend got the better of you!” She laughed gaily at Inuyasha's indignant reaction as he stood up, and strode nearer, crossing his arms.
“First of all, I can easily take a weak, little human, but I have to be careful, because if I do fuck him up, they’ll try to Purify me or whatever they do to hanyous here now a days. Second, I didn't just whistle at her, SHE kissed ME!”
Trying not to show the immediate punch of jealousy that assaulted her, Kagome laughed. “So, do you like kissing human girls?”
She watched him grin from beneath her lashes. She felt so forward in asking him about human girls, did not know why she would say such a thing, and lamented the flirtatious way it came out. Oh well, too late. But she couldn't wrap her mind around the fact that he could possibly be interested in ordinary humans when he could obviously have his choice of women from any species.
Interested in kissing one. Kissing someone else. Someone who was not her.
He was so manly, and handsome and smart and intelligent, and fit and he smelled so good...she stopped herself there. Kagome! You don't even really know him, she scolded herself. Her face went red. He noticed her blush, she was certain.
Whether he noticed or not, he stepped closer to where she stood, still fumbling with her coat. Kagome went still as she grasped that this was the first time they had ever spoken alone-without Sango or Kagome’s mom or his mom anywhere nearby.
“What about you Kagome? Are you interested in human or hanyou?”
Kagome's cheeks turned a slightly deeper shade. “Well, I've never really had anything to with any kind of guy.” She swallowed.
When had he gotten so close to her?
“You've never had a boyfriend?” he asked. “I don't believe that.”
Kagome looked at him with wide eyes. “I’ve been asked out a few times, but never with a guy I’ve really liked. And besides, I’m only turning sixteen next month. I’ll have plenty of time when I go to University.”
Without thinking ahead of what she was about to say, words kept tumbling from her mouth. She blamed his presence and the smell of the soap he used to wash himself and the exotic hair and....
“I would like to be kissed before then, though. I mean, I have almost been kissed, I mean I think I have. He might have been just, well, never-mind, but I don't really like any of the guys here.” As soon as she said the words, she regretted the stupidity of them. And then…
It happened so fast, she could hardly comprehend. Inuyasha raised his hand, cupping her jawline with his palm, his claws caressing her behind the ear. Kagome, breathless, parted her mouth, knowing he was going to kiss her. She knew it, her heart knew it, her mind knew it, her body, and as he leaned in, she closed her eyes and reclined her neck in just the slightest possible way.
Her lips trembled as she sensed him softly press his own against her, a little dry from the cold, so foreign and-
And the instant was over. Before she had opened her eyes, he was sitting on the corner of the makeshift table. Her stomach knotted in embarrassment and hurt. What the hell? Why did he stop?
She stared at the back of his head, his braid falling straight down his back. His form remained rigid. Kagome mentally made a plan of escape and walked towards the kitchen door. Still, he did not turn around.
Did he regret it? She questioned. I am his sister's friend. Maybe he just got caught up in the moment. Maybe he felt sorry and thought I was asking for- he turned to her then, his face unreadable. He opened his mouth, but turned away from her as the kitchen door swung open and Sango strode in, her mother behind her, both women carrying bundles of shopping bags. Kagome jumped out of the way, hitting the sink hard with her elbow.
“Kagome!” His mother called out, “Sorry, I didn’t know you’d be right behind the door! We didn’t hit you did we?” Sango laughed as she placed her bags near the cupboards. The older woman continued. “I hear your grandfather is finally moving to California! You must tell me about it. And you, Inuyasha,” she wrinkled her nose as she turned her son, “I know you could hear me pull up, and you knew I would have bags, so why is it that your lazy behind is still sitting here?”
Kagome looked down, slightly mollified at the understanding that it wasn't her, but the threat of being caught by his mother and her friend.
“Keh, mom, you're always bitching about something,” he said with a wink.
“Inuyasha!” his mom and sister yelled together, as Kagome looked up and smiled into his waiting eyes.
