A low, rumbling growl from behind them has them suddenly on guard, as this is a house owned by yōkai, and surely whatever is growling at them is of the yōkai variety. Hiei is the first to turn, his sword drawn, while Kurama follows suit, a rose in hand. They freeze, however, at the sight of a massive white dog, a very familiar Prussian blue crescent moon marking the beast's forehead.
Odoriferous saliva drips from the dog's jowls and starts eating away at the ground with a hiss as soon as it lands. A poisonous mist rises from the saliva, at which both Hiei and Kurama cover their noses and mouths to keep from breathing it in. The dog growls again but makes no move towards them at all. Is it guarding something? The house, perhaps?
"Sesshōmaru-sama is saying that you need to put your glamour up, Yōko-sama." The voice comes from their immediate right, but that is impossible. Nobody has come outside with them and they hadn't sensed anything, at all. Thinking on it now, they hadn't been able to sense the red-haired man that had escorted them to the front door, nor can they sense the dog. Just what is going on here?
"Sesshōmaru-sama?" The name is incredibly familiar and it strikes a chord somewhere deep in Kurama. He glances in the direction of the voice and sees yet another kitsune yōkai. This one has red hair, a softer shade than the swordsman from the 1800s, and blue-green eyes. He looks like a teenager in his humanoid form, and he has a mischievous grin on his face.
"Sesshōmaru-sama of the Western Lands." Kurama blinks and looked at the dog again, only it isn't a dog anymore, but a very tall and imposing daiyōkai. Hiei sheaths his sword, the silver kitsune notes, and he too puts away his rose and they both bow low to the Lord.
"Ne, Sesshōmaru-oji-sama, Kagome-okaa-sama brought them here," the red kitsune states, a grin on his lips while the daiyōkai frowns. "It's almost time, remember?"
"Escort them off of this Sesshōmaru's property, and make sure that the fox is sufficiently glamoured, kit." Sesshōmaru's tone is icy, matching his demeanor perfectly. The daiyōkai glides up the stairs and goes past them without so much as another glance. They don't even hear the door open or close as Sesshōmaru enters the house.
"Come on. I'll take you two back." The red kitsune is still grinning, which is no surprise to Kurama and leads them off of the stoop. As they walk along the cobblestone path, at a pace so they can take everything in as they pass it, the red kitsune falls in step next to Kurama. "When you get back to the Higurashi Shrine try not to interact with anyone there until after Kagome has come back through the well."
Kurama regards the red kitsune for a moment then nods in understanding. They don't know what they are supposed to be doing, except for going back with Kagome to the feudal era so they can help her. How are they even going to convince her or her family that-
"Don't worry about it, fox. We will know what to do when it is time for that," Hiei states in a rather cryptic tone. He knows something that Kurama doesn't, and as much as he wants to know what that something is, Hiei isn't going to breathe a word to him until he is good and ready. "You'll figure it out, eventually."
That is certainly promising. Kurama scowls slightly and almost gives in to his urge to glower at Hiei, though he knows it will do him no good. If he is going to figure it out, eventually, then there is no point in futilely pestering Hiei for information. His strange new behavior had only started after whatev-
"We're almost there, Yōko-sama. You should put up your glamour now." Kurama pauses at that and glances around. Have they walked to the edge of the property already? He looks to the red kitsune, and then to Hiei, to which Hiei just chuckles.
Kurama settles for a soft scowl and puts on glamour with surprising ease. Hiei suddenly starts laughing, as does the red kitsune. What is so damn funny? There isn't a reflective surface around for him to check on his appearance, but he has done something wrong.
"Your hair!" What is wrong with his hair? Kurama tugs some of the strands in front of his face and his eyes widen. Bright, bubblegum pink. His hair is pink, and a ghastly shade of it at that. Why is his hair pink!?
"You, aha haha, need to, haha, focus on the, ha ha ha, exact shade!" The red kitsune is doubled over as he attempts to contain his mirth, his amused blue-green gaze watching him.
Kurama glowers, his cheeks heating up in his embarrassment as he lets the glamour fall. This time, he focuses on the appearance he wants, the one he has known for the past eighteen years of his life as Minamino Shūichi. Once he is sure that he looks like his former human body again, he attempts the glamour a second time.
Hiei quickly stops laughing, though his expression is still very amused, and Kurama is sure that the image of him with bubblegum pink hair is something his friend has saved in his mind. At least a picture hadn't been taken. That would have been far more embarrassing.
"If we are quite done making fun of my unfortunate mishap, we had best be on our way." Kurama, quite miffed, walks towards where the edge of the property is. Hiei follows after him while the red kitsune is satisfied to simply watch them leave. He waits until he senses them pass through the special barrier his okaa-san has erected around their home to turn to a tall tree near the path.
"Did you get it?" Excitement colors his voice as he approaches the tree, where a short yōkai cloaked in shadows is perched on one of the limbs. A camera is tossed down, along with a camcorder, and the red kitsune grins wide. "Thanks, Hiei-sama. Kagome-okaa-san will love this."
"I would like copies, if you do not mind it, Shippō." Hiei leaps down soundlessly, his gaze staring after his much younger and weaker self, even though that Hiei and Kurama are long gone by now.
There is an unsettling feeling weighing on him, and though he can't pinpoint it or figure it out, the feeling vanishes once they have completely passed through a rather interesting barrier. He tucks the feeling away to the back of his mind, for later dissection, and observes the barrier as it shimmers slightly before disappearing completely. They have been let out, back at the shrine, but before they had passed through the barrier it had looked as if it had led into an ongoing forest. Now, looking back at the direction they had come from, it looks nothing like what they had walked through.
Kagome is becoming even more of a mystery with each new thing they learn, and it doesn't seem like many of the answers they want will be forthcoming any time soon. This newest mission seems to be much like some of their Reikai missions, in that they lack a lot of vital information, and this time it is at least for a very good reason.
"Fox, I hear voices."
Kurama stills his thoughts and lets his newly enhanced senses focus. He quickly, and effortlessly, hears the voices of two humans. From his estimate, they have to belong to the human family of Kagome's past self.
"But we've already checked the well many times!"
Checked the well...?
"But I saw nee-chan fall in!"
That...isn't possible. She hadn't fallen in yet, had she?
"Fox... We were likely at that place for far longer than we realized." Hiei's observation makes sense, and their sense of time must likely have become skewed while in that place. The barrier they had passed through is largely suspect in the time difference they are experiencing. If a day has already passed...
"Gr-grandfather! Sōta!" That is the younger Kagome's voice. He is sure of it. If she is now back in this time, then...
"We were there for three days."
The truth makes a cold and uneasy feeling settle into his stomach. He has been away for three days. His family must be worried sick.
"Fox. They're coming."
Kurama doesn't move, even as a rather dazed Kagome, garbed as a Miko, steps out of the well-house. An old man and a boy follow her out into the courtyard of the shrine, only to stop in confusion when Kagome does. She is looking right at them, and there is a look of shock on her face.
"I...InuYasha?" Fear clings to her question as she looks straight at Kurama, her blue eyes wide. Kagome starts to take a step back, but then a look of confusion flits across her features and she tilts her head to one side. "You have a tail..." There is relief in her scent, but it is brief as her gaze flicks back up to where his Kitsune ears are under the glamour.
"What'cha talking 'bout, nee-chan? He doesn't have a tail." The boy, Sōta, is glancing from his sister to Kurama, who is now staring at the girl with intrigue.
"She can see through the glamour, fox."
Well, he has figured that much out on his own. "Pardon us for coming at such a bad time, but we need to speak to Higurashi-sama. The matter is an urgent one." His gaze remains on Kagome, who blinks then glances at her grandfather.
"I'm sorry, but I need to take care of my granddaughter. She isn't feeling well, so if you could come back tomorrow I will be-"
"She is the one we need to speak to," Hiei cuts in rather abruptly, causing the old priest to mutter something about rude young people.
"Now see he-"
"It's okay, grandfather. Why don't we go inside? I'm sure kaa-san is worried sick about me, and it's better if I tell everything only once." Kagome is smiling wearily, and though she hasn't said anything to correct Sōta on Kurama having a tail, her gaze still flicks to his hidden yōkai features.
She sinks deeper into the hot water, a sigh escaping her lips as she closes her eyes and enjoys the soothing qualities. "Ah... Nothing like a hot bath..." She has sorely missed the luxury of an actual bath in the last three days, but as much as she misses it her thoughts drifted to the two yōkai that have come to see her. They are still downstairs with her family, no doubt talking about everything she has told them. The yōkai seem to believe her, while mama, however...
"Father... Kagome's story is..." Mrs. Higurashi sets down the teapot, now that everyone is served, and sits down beside the glamoured Kurama.
Kurama and Hiei haven't spoken much at all since Kagome had told them of what had transpired for her three days ago. They are hardly listening to her family's chatter and instead stuck on the bit of information about how long she had been in the past. Three days. Yet her future self had told them two days. Had she been mistaken?
"I'm sure it was a mistake on her part, fox." Not even a demon's memory is perfect all of the time, and she had originally been a human, which said human is upstairs enjoying a bath. They still have to talk to her and try to convince her that she needs to go back, regardless of what is in the present.
"Higurashi-kannushi-sama..." Kurama turns his attention to the spot where the old priest had been sitting, only to discover that he is no longer present. The silver kitsune puzzled as to how the old man has slipped away without him noticing, glances over to Mrs. Higurashi.
"He went to go seal the old well up." She smiles apologetically as she refreshes Kurama's tea. "You needn't worry though. He is nowhere near strong enough to seal the Bone-Eater's Well up." Mrs. Higurashi says it so bluntly, he has to wonder if she knows anything. She leaves the dining room with a small smile on her face, and he could have sworn that there is a knowing look in her eyes.
"I am not able to read her mind, fox. It is protected." No doubt by the much older and smarter Kagome. "It is the same for the rest of her Ningen family members," Hiei informs him, just as the stairs creak.
Kagome descends, a towel wrapped around her hair and her hands delicately rubbing the almost inky black locks dry. She comes into the dining room and pauses upon seeing Kurama. "Do I have to go back?" Her tone is somewhat petulant, but then again, nobody can blame her.
"We will be accompanying you back to Sengoku Jidai, Higurashi-sama. It is quite unavoidable that you must go back, but things should go faster with our help." Both Hiei and Kurama watch her facial expression, which is so very open, carefully. She goes through quite a range of emotions before resignation finally settles on her face.
"I need to talk t-"
"The well is sealed!" The old priest's entrance back into the dining is nowhere near as quiet as his sudden exit had been.
Kagome looks quite confused about the sudden declaration that the well is sealed, and she quickly directs her gaze to Kurama. "Sealed?"
Kurama gives a very slight shake of his head as the old priest starts explaining how he had sealed the well. None of them seem to be listening to the old man as Kagome once again displays that resigned look on her face. "Go and talk with her, Higurashi-sama."
Kagome nods and slips out of the room, her absence going unnoticed by her grandfather who is too engrossed in his explanation of ofuda. She finds her mother in the kitchen preparing dinner, her favorite. "Kaa-san..."
Her mother hums in acknowledgment and scrapes the masterfully chopped vegetables into a pot of boiling soup base. The no longer needed cutting board and knife are set down by the sink and she picks up a wooden spoon to stir the vegetables.
"I..." What is she supposed to tell her mother? That she is leaving and probably wouldn't be back for a while? The words catch in her throat, refuse to come out, and tears prick at her eyes.
"I always knew you were special, Kagome. So very special, from the moment you were born." The spoon is laid down and her mother is looking at her now. There are tears in her mother's eyes, but she looks happy. "I knew this day would come, too, and I... I never wanted to believe that it would happen. Now that it has..."
Kagome listens as her mother quietly explained how she had received a strange visit from a beautiful woman on the day she, Kagome, had been born. There had been explanations and gifts, for her, given to her mother for when she started her adventures. Gifts that will come in handy. She doesn't know what to make of this, except that this day has been destined to happen no matter what. With the understanding that she will be given the gifts after dinner, a dazed Kagome hugs her mother, accepting that she will be going back no matter what.
